Overview: Interpreters and translators work in demanding and specialised settings that require solid linguistic skills.  As part of their research project RMIT University has designed a course that will assist interpreters and translators enhance the pronunciation of difficult English sounds and foster a correct grammatical and idiomatic use of English. The course is supported by the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing of the Victorian Government. In this episode, Fatih chats with Dr Erika Gonzalez about the project and the course. Guest Bio: Erika Gonzalez completed a BA in Translation and Interpreting and an MA in Specialised Translation at Universidad de Valladolid (Spain). She also holds a certificate in Medical Interpreting from the University of Massachusetts. She started her career as a conference interpreter in Europe, and then combined it with legal interpreting at community level. To deepen her knowledge and understanding of this field, she completed an MA by research on community interpreting at Universidad del País Vasco. In 2006, she was awarded an Endeavour Europe Award by the Department of Education, Science and Training, and came to Australia to do her PhD under Professor Sandra Hale's supervision. She graduated with a PhD in professionalism and community interpreting in 2013.

On today's episode of the Brand the Interpreter Podcast, we welcome Matteo Talotta.  Matteo Talotta is an Italian-Canadian who grew up just north of Toronto, Canada and from a young age had an interest in different cultures, countries and people. He received a BA in Political Science and Italian studies from the University of Toronto in 2017. He studied abroad in Florence, Italy in the fall of 2015, an experience that changed the course of his academic career and post-academic career aspirations. Throughout his undergraduate studies, Matteo worked for various cultural and language-related organizations, honing his intercultural competencies and client service skills. He moved to the United States immediately after to pursue an MA in Italian Language and Literature at the University of Pittsburgh, where he also worked as a course instructor and graduated in 2019. He shifted into the international education sphere and moved to Barcelona, Spain where he first worked for an international internship provider, before stepping into University Recruitment with Gartner, where he currently works. In addition to his professional pursuits, Matteo enjoys learning new languages, making new connections, being outside as much as possible, and writing.  He's the author of the article entitled, Learning to speak a new language? It was called “The Language of Emoji,” and I got to interview Holly Silvestri, an experienced translator, interpreter, and founding member of the American Association of Interpreters and Translators in Education. Holly talked about her research paper on the subject, which was titled “Recommendations Concerning Digital Communication Using Emoji in Legal and Medical Interpreting.” Well, the research paper has been published by NAJIT, the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators. She began Bromberg from her basement in 1999 and developed the business as a single mom – holding her baby daughter with one arm while talking on the phone with the other. Born of Mexican immigrant parents, Janet Valdez grew up in the Los Angeles County area. She earned her certificate in recording engineering, as well as degrees in music business and business administration. While in school, she attended various service trips to Mexico, where she acted as an interpreter while providing humanitarian aid to her team. Loving international service, she later became an assistant country director with Global Expeditions on various humanitarian trips to Panama and Mexico, where she unknowingly developed her consecutive and relay interpretation skills. After a decade of working at the Disneyland Resort as a multi-language sales specialist, trainer, and bilingual Traditions facilitator, she studied Spanish legal interpreting at the Southern California School of Interpretation with Nestor Wagner.   As part of her interpretation studies,  she completed internships with Teen Court, LACBA Domestic Violence Project, and Harriet Buhai Center for Family Law. She later completed the University of Arizona's National Center for Interpretation Court Interpreters Training Institute. She is currently a traveling senior interpreter, serving different courthouses across the United States to interpret for the Department of Justice Executive Office for Immigration Review (DOJ EOIR) and facilitating first-time interpreter orientations. She is a nine-time President of the United States Service Award recipient for her countless volunteer hours and the Harriet Buhai's 2020 Community Volunteer award recipient. She currently volunteers for the Los Angeles Dream Center as well as for Catchafire.When not interpreting or volunteering, Janet is the camera director at Angelus Temple and a video producer for the Spanglish Television Sports Network. She is also part of the “Ficción en Español” book club at the Last Bookstore in Los Angeles. The forum will also be made available live online, making it the first hybrid AUSIT National Conference.The AUSIT National Conference is an annual forum for translators, interpreters, and those involved in the language services sector to explore innovations in practice, technology, and language itself.Guest Bio:Erika Gonzalez completed a BA in Translation and Interpreting and an MA in Specialised Translation at Universidad de Valladolid (Spain). She also holds a certificate in Medical Interpreting from the University of Massachusetts. She started her career as a conference interpreter in Europe, and then combined it with legal interpreting at community level. To deepen her knowledge and understanding of this field, she completed an MA by research on community interpreting at Universidad del País Vasco. In 2006, she was awarded an Endeavour Europe Award by the Department of Education, Science and Training, and came to Australia to do her PhD under Professor Sandra Hale's supervision. She graduated with a PhD in professionalism and community interpreting in 2013. She was the AUSIT National PD co-ordinator for two years, and is now a senior lecturer in Translation and Interpreting at RMIT. She continues to work as a freelance translator and conference interpreter. Mary Soots, Oregon Health Care Interpreters Association Director of Education Programs, takes a deep dive into what it takes to make medical interpreting a lasting and rewarding career. Mary Soots is an Anthropologist, a social researcher and policy analyst, and an Oregon Certified Health Care Interpreter (Spanish). She is an Adjunct Professor of Anthropology at Portland State University, specializing in the culture of Latin America. She has worked with the Hispanic community in Oregon for over 40 years which helps to inform her interpreting work. Until COVID, she also worked in Research and Evaluation at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI). Mary is the Director of Education Programs for the Oregon Health Care Interpreters Association (OHCIA), developing the curriculum for the 60-hour Health Care Interpreter training program required for Qualification or Certification credentials for spoken and sign languages. She oversees the continuing education program expanding HCI skills and knowledge. Mary also provides the instruction along with various continuing education classes including Cultural Awareness for interpreters and other health care professions. Born in Mexico and raised in the Midwest, Mary's bicultural background provides depth to her work by interpreting both the meaning of the message and the cultural context in which it exists. Her goal is to create bridges of understanding across cultures. Mary holds a Master of Arts degree in Anthropology from Portland State University, Bachelor of Arts degrees in International Studies and Anthropology, as well as Minor Degrees in Spanish and in Geography.
