Why do we find SEO so difficult? Barb Davids tells us it really isn't!We misunderstand SEO but it's really not rocket science. It matches up closely with our content marketing and is not going anywhere anytime soon. -       Organic lead gen and SEODon't just publish a website and expect people to find it. Use a blogpost strategy and bake lead magnets into them. Build out an e-mail list in exchange for the free asset. -       Free and paid keyword research toolsThere are lots of free tools that have daily limits. Keywords planner exists inside Google ads and is an independent tool. It doesn't give you info on number of searches. Keywords everywhere is a chrome extension and you can buy up to 10 credits. You get info on the competition level and you see the top keywords for any page. Make sure you know WHO you are targeting and exactly WHAT phrases those prospects are using. You can then look at the ranking of those phrases to work out what to talk about in your blog content. -       Google indexingUse site:yourdomain.com to view your site map and the H1-H6 headings and meta descriptions for your website. My own google sitemap is site:entrepreneurialtranslator.com. I now have almost 200 pages indexed. Write blogposts at least 800 words long (better still 1000-1200 words). Don't forget to add keywords to your image alt text field. I use the Yoast plugin for my own website. Book recommendationSimple marketing for smart people by Billy Broas Want to kickstart your own SEO strategy? This week I was delighted to catch up with my business mentor Trudy Rankin from The Online Business Liftoff. Trudy is a quiz marketing expert and helps service providers and solopreneurs build out quizes to interact with their audience. Quiz marketing is a really great way for us as freelance service providers to attract clients and get client leads. Remember what I always say, everything comes downstream of lead generation (no leads means no sales). A big myth to bust is that quizzes are all fluff and all about questions like What kind of Disney princess are you?Wrong! Quizzes are excellent to build out a robust sales funnel, teach people something new and gets people thinking of their next step along their business journey. They can be used in varying shapes and forms but it really depends on the type of business and ideal target customer (avatar). e.g. an online presence agency working for busy tradespersons would be the intermediary quiz designers. A quiz benefits both the person taking the quiz and helps them take a step forward in their business journeys by breaking down barriers and crushing objections. For the quiz provider it helps us attract the right clients, repel the wrong clients and segment the client pool. The quiz can offer what people need right now in their business journey.Tools and links mentioned in this episode: Otter software for transcribing audioConvert box for website popupsFreelance writers online website (snoop the site's paid jobs page)If you haven't already done so take my own freelance translator quiz here (takes under 3 minutes) Want to design your own audience quiz? A lot of your leads fall through the cracks. The corporate lifestyle is not for all of us and can lead to loss of family connection. John recently moved sideways from his role as sales manager WordFast (CAT tool of choice for Mac users) to WordBee that makes an all in one cloud-based TMS and CAT tool combined. Some highlights from this very wide-ranging conversation: John advocates moving jobs as a positive career change after 10 years or so.  He says in your comfort zone you consume value. Outside your comfort zone you create value. Temperature is a LLM parameter used to gauge predictability of the next word (LLM is nothing but a clever magic trick that works on a word by word basis). Translators using and leveraging AI for productivity will replace those not doing thisAbe Lincoln quote“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” Book reference: Lean Marketing by Allan Buy our paperback: How to Find More Direct Clients Thrive as a Premium Freelance Translator in Your Niche and Futureproof Your Career

4 Essential Shifts for High 5 Figure Growth in your Freelance Translation Business

In freelance translation, scaling your business beyond a certain point, usually €36k a year, can seem like a very daunting task. However, by implementing strategic shifts in your approach, you can unlock new levels of growth and profitability. In this blog post, we'll explore four key shifts that can help you scale your freelance translation business to high 5-figure or yes even 6-figure income. From niching down in your industry to leveraging AI and investing in your growth, these tactics will empower you to thrive in your niche in a competitive market and futureproof your career.Niche Down in Your Industry:As a freelance translator, specializing in a specific niche can significantly enhance your marketability and command higher rates. Rather than trying to be a jack-of-all-trades talking to everyone, identify a niche where your language skills and subject matter expertise intersect. Whether it's legal, medical, technical or marketing translation, niching down allows you to become a trusted shoulder-tapped expert in your specific field.By lasering in on a niche, you can tailor your marketing efforts to target clients within that industry, demonstrating your understanding of their unique language needs and terminology. This specialization not only makes you stand out from the competition but also enables you to charge premium rates for your specialized services.By way of example consider a health coach. Perhaps he or she wants to serve men (far too broad a market). Let's say he wants to serve men over 50 (soon to be my case). Narrower but still too broad. What about men over 50 recovering from heart failure (also my specific case). Fewer and better. Now that's a well-defined niche he or she can quite easily target.Use AI to Leverage and Automate Processes:I´m a technophobe and I was reluctant to embrace AI at the start. I still think machine generated output is quite mediocre. However, in today's digital age, AI-powered tools can quite simply revolutionize the way freelance translators work, allowing them to streamline processes and increase productivity. From machine translation and CAT (Computer-Assisted Translation) tools to project management software such as Click-Up or Trello, AI can automate routine tasks, such as file formatting, terminology management and quality assurance.*Listen to the full episode for all 4 strategies#FreelanceTranslation #BusinessGrowth #ScalingBusiness#TranslationIndustry #NicheSpecialization #AIinTranslation#AutomationTools #DelegationStrategies #ProfessionalDevelopment#Mentorship #HighIncomeFreelancing #LanguageServicesBuy our paperback: How to Find More Direct Clients Thrive as a Premium Freelance Translator in Your Niche and Futureproof Your Career

Have you ever sat down to write a blog or social media post and you just froze? Not because of fear or imposter syndrome, because those are 100% real, too. But instead, you froze because you just didn't really know what it was that your ideal customer wanted or needed from you. This can really feel like you're just pulling any old idea out of a dark hole. Now, of course, we all suffer from writer's block at some point, but what is worse is not understanding WHO you're serving and WHY. This can be the death of a business before it's even started. In today's episode, I'm talking about how to identify your Ideal Customer Avatar (ICA). So why is this so important? Because your ICA is someone who is absolutely crucial to the success of your business and if you don't know WHO they are, your business won't have a solid foundation on which to build.Your ICA represents your ONE single PERFECT customer. This ONE single person is the potential customer who wants and needs YOUR content, or YOUR services. This is also a person that you LOVE to work with. Win-win!There are specific ways to really hone in on who this person is: what they like, what they don't like, what their aspirations are, and most importantly, what their fears and pain points are. And surprise, surprise…when you know all this, you won't be sitting there frozen at your computer not knowing what to create or to say in your next social media or blog post. You'll be happily creating solutions to their wants and needs — something they'll actually pay for! You're not just building your business as a hobby, right? I know you're not, and that's why I want you to get laser focused and know how to serve your ideal customers best!I've even created a super helpful worksheet for you to print out and use as you build out and define YOUR very own ICA.Please enjoy!https://www.buzzsprout.com/2025705/episodes/14010170*Action step: Download your FREE ideal customer avatar worksheet athttps://lnkd.in/dA_4y6en#ClientFocus #NicheExpertise #TranslationMastery #ContentCrafting #IdealClientJourney #LanguagePrecision #MarketInsights #TailoredTransportlations #CustomerPersona #ContentStrategyWins #NailYourNicheBuy our e-book: How to Find More Direct Clients Thrive as a Premium Freelance Translator in Your Niche and Futureproof Your Career

Not having an adequate SEO strategy is THE number one mistake I see translators make time and again with their online presence. If they have a website it's always very nice but they are not doing nearly enough to drive traffic and eyeballs to it. That's like wearing Harry Potter's invisible cloak. If prospects can't SEE us how on earth will they BUY from us? Essentially, onpage SEO helps us build a constant pipeline of warm leads for our translation business. As I´ve said before, everything comes downstream of lead generation so this is a fundamental topic to gear us up for success. Pay careful special attention to: Title Tags Unique to each page and contain relevant keywords. After earning their spurs with a few years under their belts, most translators graduate to marketing to direct clients. Direct clients pay higher fees and it's much better working directly with the end client with no intermediaries. This helps getting queries answered quickly and optimizing the quality of the work. However, translators must also be aware that direct clients can be more demanding and throw you extra requests (e.g. for DTP, other language combinations, etc). On balance I much prefer working with the client directly. Here are a few marketing ideas for your direct client prospecting:1. Use your agency end clients as inspiration (DO NOT POACH)2. European higher education institutions with academic programmes in English 3.
