Meet the Millimaci's, Joseph and Fiona, a married couple who are very well known within the Perth Italian community. We were lucky to have Joseph as one of our first guests in 2023 and for this chat his lovely wife Fiona joined us as well. We loved hearing the story of how they met and became friends bonding over mutual friends, a shared Italian heritage and a strong passion and love for languages. The friendship blossomed into a romance, they married, had a family and both have had long fulfilling careers as language teachers. This was definitely one of our chats that could have gone on for hours. It was so interesting to hear Fiona's story of time spent living in Canada as child before her family ultimately made the decision to return to Australia, she has a very unique experience of living as both an Italian Australian and an Italian Canadian, as our listeners know the Italian community is very strong in Canada. We look forward to our next catch up with this vibrant couple!!

As Antonio D'Alfonso and I, Bob Sorrentino, traverse the intricate landscapes of Italian-Canadian identity, we invite you to join our heartfelt conversation. We share our own family stories of immigration, illuminating the unique cultural experiences that shape Italian Canadians. We journey through Montreal and Toronto, exploring the representation of different Italian regions, and delve into the often complex relationship between language and identity. Embarking on a deeper exploration, we question the very nature of Italian identity, a complex tapestry woven with threads of history, war, and contemporary perceptions of beauty. We discuss the challenges of a nation without a common language or religion, and share personal stories of self-discovery and cultural understanding. Join us as we challenge the traditional views of identity, and embrace the fluidity of Italian-Canadian and Italian-American experiences. In the final leg of our journey, we delve into the fascinating concept of an "Italic" identity, a cross-border cultural phenomenon that challenges traditional concepts of nationality and heritage. Despite the harsh realities of racism and intolerance, we remain hopeful for a future where these will be mere echoes of the past. Highlighting Antonio D'Alfonso's autobiographical writing, we uncover a lesser-known aspect of Canadian history and emphasize the importance of preserving diverse cultural identities. Settle in for a thought-provoking exploration of identity and culture in the modern world.Poet, novelist, essayist, translator, Antonio D'Alfonso has published more than 40 titles and has made three feature films. He is the founder of Guernica Editions which he managed for thirty-three years before passing it on to new owners in 2010. For his writings, he won the Trillium Award, the Bressani Award, and the New York Independent Film Award for his film, Bruco. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. In this episode, Linda begins by speaking about the kinds of assumptions made about her because of her Italian-Canadian immigrant background - and then expands that consideration to show how making such assumptions can actually be harmful. Case in point? The Christie-Pitts riot on August 16, 1933. There have been two graphic novels written about this riot: one simply titled Christie Pitts and the other titled The Good Fight.A second case in point is the Japanese-Canadian internment camps during the Second World War. She considers four works of literature in Canada that address this subject:Joy Kogawa's ObasanFrances Itani's RequiemKerri Sakamoto's One Hundred Million HeartsMark Sakamoto's Forgiveness: A Gift from my GrandparentsThen, for the Takeaway, she invites scholar, Jennifer Andrews, who addresses narratives of exceptionality and demonstrates what function they serve (and whose) and why they persist. Using her book, Canada Through American Eyes (published by Palgrave in 2023), Jennifer chats with Linda about how narratives of exceptionality are rehearsed in both the United States and Canada - and why we need to challenge them. If a struggling Blues team can use this as a springboard to save their season, and decisions ahead for GM Doug Armstrong if they don't. Jake Muzzin's - perhaps permanent - absence causes concern for the player's well-being, and also for an already questionable Toronto Maple Leafs blue-line. Plus, could changes be coming as soon as this week for the Vancouver Canucks?? According to Dregs, Bruce Boudreau's position behind the Canucks bench could be vacant any day now. Betano's Kris Abbott was absent as he's galavanting in Greece; he'll be saying ‘Opa!' when he hears the guys praise his NHL bets. We discuss the prevalence of trauma discourse, the philosophy of Alain Badiou, why social dynamics are often ignored by modern psychiatry and psychology, and we examine the history of the "anti-psychiatry movement" with special focus on R.D. Laing, Jacques Lacan and Frantz Fanon. Vincenzo Di Nicola is an Italian-Canadian psychologist, psychiatrist and family therapist, and philosopher of mind. In reflecting about her father and her visit with him to his small Italian village some years ago, Linda draws comparisons with Nino Ricci's Lives of the Saints (Penguin/Random House), in which the young male protagonist, Vittorio, must work out how he feels about his mother who flies in the face of the strict moral codes of the Italian town. With reference to other Italian-Canadian writers -- Terri Favro, Connie Guzzo-McParland, Pier Giorgio Di Cicco -- and also the audio book read by Marco Timpano (with great thanks to Penguin/Random House for permissions), the television version of Ricci's novel and Frances Mayes, Under the Tuscan Sun, and Madelena, the episode addresses the patriarchal conditions for women in Italy, but also what it means to see our parents as more than just parents, but as people with their own lives, dreams, and regrets. In the Takeaway section -- and perhaps a counterpoint to the episode's discussion -- Linda looks at and recommends Dior's Petit Dictionnaire de La Mode, which she picked up at the recent Dior Exhibit at the McCord Museum in Montreal, Quebec. We are joined today by Antonio Piretti. Antonio is an Italian/Canadian musician who has just completed a 6000km musical bike tour through 16 European countries. He describes the trip as somewhat of a miracle in these "locked down" pandemic times.Antonio began planning his tour over two years ago, but many of his concerts were canceled once the pandemic hit. He did not let this deter him and instead moved on to Plan B. Towing a trailer containing his music equipment and all his belongings, he relied on wonderful Warmshowers.org hosts for hospitality. His trip took him from Northern Germany down to Lisbon and then home to Italy just in time for his son's birth. Then he picked up his journey again and went from Helsinki to Athens. Since the planed large concerts were no longer an option because of Covid, he decided to do smaller backyard concerts instead. Generous Warmshowers.org hosts set up cookouts in their backyards, invited all their friends and the local community, and Antonio would literally sing for his supper! He performed in every environment; backyards, local pubs, small neighborhood parks, and sometimes even in host's living rooms. He played 31 shows in all during his tour, always following local pandemic guidelines.Antonio is so glad he didn't let pandemic restrictions stop his adventure. He believes that things could not have turned out any better than they did. Antonio is amazed by the kindness he received from all he met and is happy he could provide musical pandemic relief to so many wonderful people along the way. During this episode of Money Tales, Sandi and Cammie spoke with Vincent Valerie. Vincent thought his destiny was to take over the family enterprise that his father founded. Since his path was paved, Vincent had the flexibility to live a party lifestyle and enjoy the fruits of what his father created. That is until he learned in his 20s that his dad was selling the company. With that sale went Vincent's future as the successor CEO. Our discussion with Vincent inspired this week's financial insight at the end of the interview, where we discuss succession considerations for family businesses. Being born into a family business can feel like one's life path is already laid out. To some, that feeling is a great burden of responsibility and to others, it feels like a cushioned set-up and leads to a sense of entitlement. Vincent got to know both of these feelings throughout his life and career. As the son of a successful Italian Canadian tech entrepreneur in the 1980s and 90s, Vincent embraced everything about the “rich-kid” lifestyle. He had a sports car at 16, the most expensive clothes and traveled all over the world. He came to realize a few years later just how ill-prepared for life he was, outside that bubble of entitlement.  So when his father decided to sell the family business, Vincent was faced with redefining his life's dream. Vincent's new journey led him to work in wealth management for one of the largest Canadian banks. He focused on managing financial affairs of family enterprises and generational wealth transfer. Working in wealth management, Vincent witnessed a significant gap in how a family's wealth and business was being managed, in relation to the management of familial relationships and dynamics. Gatti was famously known for his trilogy fights with Micky Ward, specially the 1st and the 3rd fight which got put part of HBO's 10 best fights of the decade also I highly recommend you to go and watch them fights as they are really the definition of warriors going at it. Furthermore, Gatti Death came as shock to many as he was only 37 years old and it came with a lot of mystery and confusion with his wife first being arrested for homicide and then released after an autopsy done in Brazil ruled his death was suicide, however there was a lot of claims by friends, family that Gatti would never commit suicide and that the wife of Gatti was guilty of murder as her motive was Gatti's fortune, which Rodrigues inherited since she was able to coerce Gatti to void their prenup agreement three weeks prior to his death.

My second favorite Italian-Canadian, comedic actor Will Sasso tackles the roles of villain Gluttonator and Union Boss in the new animated film, Henchmen, that also stars Thomas Middleditch, James Marsden, Rosario Dawson, Alfred Molina,Nathan Fillion, Rob Riggle, Jane Krakowski, Craig Robinson and Bobcat Goldthwait. I likened Henchmen to a blend of Big Hero 6 meets Megamind and Sasso's unique character voices, especially with the Gluttonator enhance the film watching experience. I mean, what's a greater villain someone weaponizing cheese? Talk about a nightmare for those of us that are lactose intolerant! Official Film Synopsis: In a world of super-villains, evil schemes and global domination, someone has to take out the trash. Welcome to the world of Henchmen, third class. When Lester (Middleditch), a fresh-faced recruit, joins the Union of Evil, he is assigned to a motley crew of blue-collar workers led by fallen henchmen Hank. But when Lester accidentally steals a super villain's ultimate weapon, Hank must break his risk-nothing code to save the boy he's befriended, even if it means becoming the one thing he has always avoided: a hero. Sasso talks to us about the differences between live action acting and voice acting, what it's like being the son of immigrant parents, gives me a pass on being my second favorite Italian-Canadian once he finds out who edged him out, how he and I, who are both 6'3", bald, May born, Mediterranean men discuss the issues facing Kalani and Asuelu of 90 Day Fiancé fame and how he would like to one day dub one of his animated characters into Italian. It would be utterly miraculous for most people, to not be psychologically or spiritually destroyed as a result of their own father having murdered their own mother in cold blood during their childhood years. BRAVE-HEART WARRIOR, Laura Avolese, will be joining us live on the radio airwaves to talk candidly and Power of Forgiveness  A Not-To-Be-Missed Show on C-Suite Radio / C-Suite Network!! Laura’s childhood was steeped in mafia culture and domestic abuse. At just 10 years old she and her sister lived with her grandparents after the brutal murder of her mother at the hands of her father. Laura’s grandparents were close, but strict. They raised her with respect and discipline, but she struggled to overcome the demons of her past, turning to drinking and drugs to cope. After escaping a physically abusive boyfriend Laura fell into a psychologically abusive relationship and after three years, became pregnant. Forced by strict Italian tradition and facing the prospect of being disowned by her grandparents, Laura married. At 21 she gave birth to her son, and a daughter soon followed. At 29 a motivational course sparked a journey of forgiveness, acceptance, empowerment, and inner strength that changed Laura’s life forever. A few months later, following the tragic loss of her grandfather to suicide, Laura decided to seize control of her life. Laura left her abusive marriage refusing to accept alimony or child support payments, determined to remain independent and to support her two young children herself. She became a successful real estate agent in her 30s and seemed unstoppable – but it was not to last. Bankruptcy and depression hit Laura in her early 40’s. With just $24 in her bank account she decided to rediscover the inner strength, spirituality, and power of forgiveness that changed her life at 29. In a matter of months, she turned her life around once again, reaching new levels of success and happiness. Her $24 bank account grew to more than six figures in under six months. Laura now devotes her life to empowering and inspiring others to pursue their dreams and overcome their past. Laura uses her inner strength to share the lessons she’s learned about abuse, addiction, pain and forgiveness to help others find their inner strength, pursue their dreams and overcome the past.  Laura Avolese is an Italian-Canadian author, mother and real estate agent who has devoted her life to personal growth through positive transformation. Laura has shouldered heavy burdens and unimaginable hardships throughout her life and in memory of her mother, has dedicated herself to sharing her story to support and uplift other victims of domestic violence. As the author of 4 books, including Breaking Barriers, 365 Empowering Stories, and Dreaming Big and Being Bold , Laura uses her inner strength to share the lessons she’s learned about abuse, addiction, pain and forgiveness to empower others to pursue their dreams and overcome the past. Laura has been featured on several television programs including CHCH TV Morning Live, various podcasts. Laura is proud to be involved in a documentary which was released in May 2019. With this and future writing projects Laura continues to shed light on issues of abuse, addiction and reminds us of the power of forgiveness. The Italian-Canadian artist is also known for his involvement with techno titan Richie Hawtin and the forming of the highly influential labels Plus 8 Recordings and Definitive records and his fruitful involvement with Final Scratch and especially Beatport, being a vital founder of both companies.   He is a pioneer of electronic music’s technological evolution and helped sculpt the genre’s game-changing transition from analog to digital and from vinyl to turntables and laptops. In sharing this vision with Richie Hawtin, they spearheaded a project that would act as the iTunes of dance, which paved the path for a new and zestful era.   I had so much fun recording this episode with John! Another time, when Teresa’s Australian (feminist) friend came to visit, she was aghast at the fact that her mother was fetching her brother olives. However, her mother explained that she did it out of love and not subservience. That conversation changed the way both women looked at the situation and gave them a fresh perspective. Teresa remarks, “Culture is interesting because everybody is different. As it is a global world now, you have to learn more about cultures.” Learning the aspects of different cultures, asking for permission before acting, and not taking offense or misunderstanding another’s actions are all ways in which we can appreciate and accept each other more.

Prime Minister Brian Mulroney apologizes to Italian Canadians for World War II internment. While Canada’s mistreatment of Japanese Canadians before, during and after World War II became well known, its mistreatment of Italian Canadians was less publicized. Of course, being at war with fascist Italy prompted suspicions about some Canadians of Italian descent as well. Although Canada detained hundreds of Italian Canadians in internment camps, few had their property seized as did Japanese Canadians. Even so, years of discussions ensued before Canada agreed to acknowledge its injustices to this community. On November 4, 1990 in Concord, Ontario, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney apologized to the Italian community in a speech addressed to the National Congress of Italian Canadians and the Canadian Italian Business Professionals Association. The speech was not accompanied by monetary compensation, because Italian Canadians had agreed that, given the lack of property seizures, it was not necessary. However, 15 years later, in November 2005 the federal government agreed to a redress package of $2.5 million initially, to be paid to Italian Canadian organizations to support educational and commemorative exhibits. The amount was expected to rise to $12 million in total, however, none to be given to individuals who were detained during the war. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Andrew Rotilio knows what it feels like to not fit in. Born to first-generation Italian-Canadian parents, the Expanse actor's first language wasn't what his teachers spoke in school. He grew up speaking Italian, then learned French and English as a way of surviving, of blending in. By the time he mastered his fourth language, he wasn't trying to navigate the social complexities of the real world—he was trying to leave it behind completely.

Don't Piss In My Pocket And Tell Me It's Raining

The DJ on my car radio was incensed. The Lockerbie bomber had been released. My first thoughts echoed his: it was indecent that this killer was not only released, but received a hero’s welcome back home in Libya. Yes, I admit it; I’m just not that forgiving a guy. I don’t think a terminally-ill mass murderer should be released on compassionate grounds so that he might spend his last days with friends and family. If he truly is guilty, he deserves to spend his last days, his last breath, rotting in jail. But other thoughts arose as well. One was that many of the Lockerbie victim’s families doubted his guilt. Jim Swire, whose daughter Flora was killed, said: "I went into that court in Holland thinking I was going to see the trial of those who were responsible for the murder of my daughter. I came out of it thinking he had been framed." A bereaved father’s statement of support for the alleged killer of his child carries a lot of weight with me, as do those of the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission, which termed the conviction a possible miscarriage of justice. Where was the media coverage of these nuances? Surely they may even have played a part in his release, yet I heard nothing about them on CNN, ABC, NPR. My next thought was even more troubling, and it brought me back to the outrage of the DJ, and to my own reflexive anger. How, I thought, can we all feel such outrage when the United States has been harboring a serial terrorist bomber for years?Louis Posada Carilles is largely thought to be responsible for the bombing of a Cuban airliner that killed all aboard, including the mostly teenage members of the Cuban National Fencing Team. He has been convicted in abstentia in several countries for bombings and bombing plots, and was thought by our own FBI to have been involved in literally hundreds of bombings of Cuban targets in Cuba, Honduras, Panama and Venezuela. Washington even denied an extradition request from the Venezuelan Supreme Court, and Carilles continues to live in the United States though he has actually admitted to several bombings. He said of one bombing in Cuba, that killed an Italian-Canadian national: “It is sad someone is dead, but we cannot stop.”He also worked for Colonel Oliver North and General Richard Secord as they secretly and illegally armed Contra death squads in Nicaragua. Of course, North, a man who did everything he could to subvert our constitution by doing an end run around our laws and our congress, is now a well paid radio and TV personality and a darling ‘patriot’ of the right. It seems that no bad deed goes unrewarded for these murderous thugs, and the airwaves are strangely mute about their crimes and our government’s continuing complicity.George Bush senior once said these telling words: “One man’s freedom fighter is another man’s terrorist” – and there, in one sentence, is all you need to know about the moral expediency of the United States. We will protect a bloodthirsty killer involved in literally scores of bombings of civilian targets because he is the enemy of our enemy. And while protecting him, we will respond with self-righteous outrage when another bomber, whose guilt is far less established, is set free. How sad that the frothing right, and even the average American citizen has forgotten the wisdom of Thomas Paine, one of the pivotal figures of the American revolution, who said “He that would make his own liberty secure, must guard even his enemy from oppression.”. The American policy of covert wars against countries we do not like, wars that often kill innocent civilians, is immoral and reprehensible. America has no solid moral footing, and seems unlikely to develop one when the Obama administration is enthusiastically continuing Bush polices of rendition and holding people without trial at a sort of Guantanimo lite – the Bagram air force base. Our government, our media, and most of our political commentators, appear to be rank hypocrites as they protest torture, terrorism and oppression in places like Libya and Iran while they refuse to acknowledge, or sometimes even actively cover up, their own country’s equivalent crimes.
