That's a really convoluted way to say a whole bunch of nothing, which is fitting for a movie of this caliber. Yelling: Linemen labor on the line living lives within a lethal landscape, and lap up lots of liquor living with a looming liver loss liability! Dr. Julia Kelto Lillis asks, "To whom does a woman's virginity belong?" Join her and your hosts as we dive into the world of early Christian purity culture, what wine has to do with the V-Card, and why the gods like to make babies with virgins. Like today, the concept of virginity was culturally significant in the ancient world. But unlike today, virginity as an act of devotion to God could propel a woman to the top of the social ladder.  This episode we explore shifting ideas about what makes someone a virgin and the importance of virginity to the early Christian movement.  Access transcript and episode show notes: https://www.womenwhowentbefore.com/episodes/virginity-and-the-hype-about-hymensWomen Who Went Before is written, produced, and edited by Emily Chesley and Rebekah Haigh.Podcast theme music is composed and produced by Moses Sun. “The Puritans feared that which was undomesticated.” — Jeff Hendricks“Our earliest American heroes were Morton's oppressors, Endicott, Bradford, Miles Standish. Merry Mount's been expunged from the official version because it's the story not of a virtuous utopia but of a utopia of candor. Yet it's Morton whose face should be carved in Mount Rushmore.” — Philip Roth “He held out the promise of America as an earthly paradise, a pagan, not a protestant prospect, a zone of pleasure, not salvation through suffering.” — John Seelye “Drink and be merry, merry, merry boys;Let all your delight be in the Hymens joys…Or make green garlands, bring bottles outAnd fill sweet nectar freely about.Uncover thy head and fear no harm; For here's good liquor to keep it warm. Then drink and be merry, Or yet, lasses in beaver coats come away, Yee hall be welcome to us night and day.To drink and be merry.” — Thomas Morton Today we are going to play with one of the greatest stories you probably have never heard of. Even in U.S. very little known about this story and it's a crime. If you have even a superficial knowledge of American history, you have almost certainly heard about the settlers who came to Plymouth in 1620. What you may not have heard about is that shortly thereafter a gentleman named Thomas Morton set up a different colony just down the road from Plymouth. At a time when most people arrived to Plymouth in chains, as indentured servants, Morton abolished servitude in his settlement he called Merrymount. At a time when his neighbors in Plymouth were brutally squashing religious dissent, Morton encouraged religious freedom. And on top of it all, he and his friends entertained extremely friendly relations with Native tribes even openly intermarrying. What makes the story even crazier is that Merrymount was well on its way to be more successful than Plymouth. When new settlers arrived on American shores, many took one look at ultra-strict Plymouth, another look at the freedom to be enjoyed at Merrymount and didn't need to be told twice which way to go. The only reason why Merrymount didn't make it in the history books you may have read is because the pilgrims turned to violence to destroy a community whose existence was a challenge to all of their beliefs. From that day forward, the name of Thomas Morton has largely been erased from history. Some people could refer to Morton as a victim of the Puritan brand of cancel culture. The Puritan story became mainstream, and Morton's name disappeared. This episode fixes this mistake. Mona was born on Aug. 1, 1967 in Port Said, Egypt and has lived in the U.K, Saudi Arabia and Israel. In November 2011, Egyptian riot police beat her, breaking her left arm and right hand, and sexually assaulted her and she was detained for 12 hours by the Interior Ministry and Military Intelligence. It was during that time that the Eqyptian Goddess Sekhmet revealed herself to Mona and became a part of her healing journey and further commitment to the destruction of patriarchy. Sekhmet is sun Goddess of war, destruction, plagues and healing. She has the head of a lion which is so appropriate given that Mona was born under the sign of Leo.

Her first book Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution (2015) targeted patriarchy in the Middle East and North Africa and her second The Seven Necessary Sins For Women and Girls (2019) took her disruption worldwide. Her commentary has appeared in media around the world and she makes video essays as FEMINIST GIANT.

I have spent a lot of time planning and preparing this podcast. It's not something I have taken lightly. For the following reasons. Firstly, Why did I want to read this book? The title is hardly Islamic. What could I possibly learn from a book whose title has such promiscuous connotations? The reason why I read this book was for the purpose of research for a new book that I am writing with fellow Muslim writers on the topic of the Islamic alternative to feminism. Since I became interested in the topic of whether Islam is compatible with feminism, I have genuinely made an effort to understand feminist ideas by reading books by non-muslim and Muslim feminists. I don't want to have a shallow understanding. “The rage shifts from the oppressors in our presidential palaces to the oppressors on our streets and in our homes —unless we topple the Mubaraks in our mind, in our bedrooms, and on our street corners — our revolution has not yet begun.” This quote ends the first chapter of Mona Eltahawy's Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution. Mona Eltahawy is an award-winning Egyptian American feminist. She has written for establishments like The New York Times and the Washington Post. She spends her time between Cairo and New York. Mona is a strong proponent of “FUCK THE PATRIARCHY”. In this episode, Letlhogonolo Mokgoroane sat down with Mona to discuss her much acclaimed book. Mona shares stories about how the book came about. It initially started as an essay titled “Why They Hate Us”, then the essay blossomed into a necessary book. The book tells the story of Muslim womxn and how they are subjugated under the gaze of faith and culture. Mona describes the thesis of the book as the trifecta of misogyny, which is the State, Street and home together oppressing girls and womxn. The conversation also touches on our how institutions like religion are used as conduits of patriarchy. Letlhogonolo and Mona spoke on a range of interesting topics, such as identity, (Black) feminism, consent, queerness and some of her favorite writers. At the time of recording Black Panther was a huge point of discussion, so they spoke about North Africa and the anti-blackness that exists in that part of the region. Mona believes in the autonomy of womxn and upholds the proclamation: “I own my body”. This conversation is both illuminating as it is incendiary. At the end of the podcast, she also reveals that she is working on a new book.
