Chad Ellis is the CEO of the Texas Agricultural Land Trust (TALT), which is one of the nation's leading ag-focused conservation organizations. TALT's mission is “to conserve the Texas heritage of agricultural lands, wildlife habitats, and natural resources,” but at its core, TALT's work is built on the foundation of long-term, trusting, mutually respectful relationships. - Given the small proportion of public lands in Texas compared to other western states, much of the responsibility for landscape-scale ecological health falls on the shoulders of private landowners. And since 2007, TALT has helped these landowners find ways to not only protect their family legacies, but to improve the overall quality of grasslands, water, air, and wildlife for all Texans. - Chad was raised in rural Texas, and from a very early age, he felt a deep connection to land, agriculture, and wildlife. While his entire career has been devoted to thoughtfully and effectively stewarding natural resources, you'll quickly realize that at his core, Chad is a relationship builder. During his tenures at the NRSC, the Noble Research Institute, and now as the leader of TALT, Chad has implemented many cutting-edge conservation solutions– but, as you'll hear him explain, none of these projects would be successful without solid, trusting relationships between all stakeholders. - Longtime listeners will recognize Chad from an earlier appearance on Mountain & Prairie– back in 2023, he was one of the panelists in an episode called “Landscape-Scale Management in a Private Land State,” which was recorded live at the Texas Chapter of the Wildlife Society's annual meeting. In this episode, we dig more into Chad's personal and professional journey in conservation– why he has devoted his career to such a challenging-yet-critical cause, and how he approaches his work from both practical and philosophical perspectives. We discuss his love of entrepreneurial approaches, his leadership style, mentors, the storied legacy of TALT's founder Blair Fitzsimons, supporting the next generation of conservationists, his favorite books, and much more. - If you haven't already, I'd encourage you to check out TALT's website and follow its work on social media– TALT is a constant source of inspiration for me and all of the Western conservation community. This is a special live episode that was recorded in Austin, Texas, in November of 2023 at the 50th Anniversary Endangered Species Act Symposium. As you may know, 2023 marked 50 years since the passing of the Endangered Species Act (ESA), which is one the most influential and impactful pieces of conservation legislation in United States history. This symposium gathered together an impressive and wide range of ESA experts from governmental, non-profit, and for-profit organizations, and we spent the day discussing the ESA's fascinating and complex past, present, and future. In this episode, we'll hear from four leaders who have worked in the trenches of conservation for decades, and each of them brings a unique perspective on both the challenges and opportunities that the ESA creates for on-the-ground conservation. The panelists are: Gary Frazer, Assistant Director for Ecological Services at the US Fish and Wildlife Service Peg Romanik, a recently retired high-ranking attorney from the Department of Interior Jimmy Bullock, Senior Vice President at Resource Management Service LLC Leo Miranda-Castro, Former USFWS Director and current Executive Director of Conservation without Conflict All four of these distinguished panelists have worked extensively within the frameworks of the Endangered Species Act, and they bring a wealth of practical and philosophical knowledge about the ESA's impact over the past 50 years… and its expected impacts in the future. But perhaps more importantly, these four panelists helped me to appreciate the humanity behind the historic, powerful legislation– the smart, dedicated, conservation-minded leaders whose work has allowed the act to effect change and evolve over the past five decades. We covered a lot during this hour-long discussion, and highlights include: How the ESA switched from a more punitive to a more collaborative approach; concrete examples of productive, collaborative conservation; working with the extreme opinions about climate change; hopes for the future of market-incentivized species conservation; examining potential political threats to the ESA; the evolution of using the ESA for single species conservation to using it for landscape-scale conservation, advice for young people in the conservation field, and much more. This episode was the last panel discussion of the day, so if you'd like to listen to the first three panels, you can do so on this episode's webpage: www.mountainandprairie.com/esa. Those earlier sessions include discussions with everyone from one of the ESA's authors to some of today's most renowned conservation thought leaders– I really can't imagine having a more impressive group of conservation practitioners in one room. You can check out the episode notes for a link to the Symposium's program, which includes all the details of the day's event and speaker bios. And one more thing: This symposium was organized by the fellows of the James G. Teer Conservation Leadership Institute, which is sponsored by The Texas Chapter of The Wildlife Society. The mission of the Teer Institute is to ensure a future legacy of well-trained conservation leaders by providing professional training in leadership skills and contemporary conservation. I was so impressed with all the fellows and left this event feeling very optimistic about the future of conservation in Texas and beyond. A huge thank you to the fellows and to Dr. Roel Lopez of Texas A&M University for inviting me down to Austin to moderate this panel. It was an honor to be in the same room with all these amazingly inspiring folks. Hope you enjoy! --- Episode notes and recordings of other panels: https://mountainandprairie.com/esa James G. She earned her BFA in Dance from SUNY Purchase College in Purchase, NY. Selena's dance/movement therapy training includes the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan, NY, and Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. As a registered dance/movement therapist, she believes in the importance of decolonizing dance as therapy, and culturally inclusive processing as the primary therapeutic principle. Selena has worked with adolescents in the residential treatment center setting and experienced the power of incorporating cultural healing elements in helping adolescents navigate social, emotional, physical, and relational developmental changes. Coburn has presented on Blackfeet cultural dances, Native American perspectives, and participated in panel discussions locally, regionally, and internationally. This is the second of two live episodes that were recorded at the Texas Chapter of The Wildlife Society's 2023 annual meeting in Houston, Texas. The topic of this panel discussion was Achieving Landscape-Scale Management in a Private Land State. As you learned in the previous episode, Texas has very little public land compared to other western states, so large-landscape conservation in Texas brings with it a number of extremely unique challenges and opportunities. In this conversation, we heard from four of Texas's most respected conservation leaders– individuals who are finding ways to achieve ambitious conservation goals using their own unique skillsets and approaches. - I was joined on stage in front of an audience of nearly 600 people by Roel Lopez, Director of the Texas A&M Natural Resources Institute; Chad Ellis, CEO of the Texas Agricultural Land Trust; Terry Anderson, co-founder of Conservation Equity Management and Conservation Equity Partners; and Billy Tarrant, Associate Director of Stewardship Services at Borderlands Research Institute. You can check out the episode notes for more information on each of the panelists and links to their respective bios and organizations. - As you'll hear in the conversation, there are a wide range of innovative approaches and tools– from academic to non-profit to market-based– that are allowing Texas to be a trailblazer in private lands conservation in the United States. So we had a lot to cover in this hour-long session, including: The evolution and use of conservation easements, the importance of building solid relationships with landowners, new conservation tools on the horizon, how Texas has exported is private lands conservation tools to other states, data around population growth in Texas, advice for you and aspiring conservationists, and a long list of books, podcasts, and resources that have influenced these conservation leaders. - And just before this conversation, each of the panelists did a brief presentation that summarized all of the important work they are doing in Texas. If you'd like to listen to those talks and access their Powerpoint presentations, there's a link in the episode notes. However, you don't need to listen to those presentations to get full value out of this episode– but they are there if you want to go a little deeper. - If you're interested in conservation and learning from impressive individuals who have devoted their lives to land, stewardship, and conservation, then I know you'll enjoy this episode. Once again, thanks to John Kinsey and the Texas Chapter of The Wildlife Society for inviting me down to Houston and for giving me the opportunity to have these meaningful conversations. This is the first of two live episodes that were recorded at the Texas Chapter of The Wildlife Society's 2023 annual meeting in Houston, Texas. The topic of this panel discussion was Equitable Access to the Outdoors, a subject that is timely and important in all areas of the West, but especially important in Texas, where 93% of the state's land is privately owned. Whether your interest is outdoor recreation, public health, climate change, or public-private conservation partnerships, the ability for people to have access to parks, trails, open spaces, and wild places is becoming more and more important with each passing year. - For this conversation, I was joined on stage by five Texas conservation innovators– folks who are working hard to ensure that Texans of all stripes have ample opportunities to spend time outside– whether in the cities or in the state's more rural areas. In order of their appearance in this conversation, we had Jaime González, Healthy Communities Director for the Nature Conservancy; Sarah Coles, Executive Director of the Texas Children in Nature Network; Immanuel Salas, Texas Parks and Wildlife's R3 Coordinator for Hunting and Shooting Sports; Neal Wilkins, President and CEO of the East Foundation; and Joseph Fitzsimons, conservationist and owner of the San Pedro Ranch. You can check out the episode notes for more information on each of the panelists and links to their respective bios and organizations. - I could've spent hours talking to each of the panelists individually, but as a group, we had a very informative and educational conversation– one that provided a different perspective from some of my past episodes that focused on equitable access. we covered a lot in this hour-long discussion, including: the importance of building thriving cities with ample parks, trails, and outdoor space; how these organizations are working to reverse some of the disheartening trends around children's health and their access to the outdoors; the importance of collaborative partnerships, the R3 program in Texas– what it is, why it's important, and how it is evolving; the role of private landowners in providing access opportunities; the importance of youth education; the role of government; public land in Texas; the need to engage with elected officials; favorite books; and much more. - I learned a lot from this conversation and was honored to share a stage with such an impressive group of people who are working so hard on this all-important issue. Introducing Wonder Media Network's latest audio documentary, Teaching Texas. In 1961, Norma and Mel Gabler were a quiet couple living in Longview, Texas. One day, they noticed some factual errors in one of their sons' textbooks. What began as a small complaint morphed into a multi-decade crusade to shape what children of Texas — and therefore the country — read in their textbooks. In an election year with raging debates around education, this audio documentary charts how Texas dictated American education over the last sixty years and examines how the fight over our childrens' classroom has only intensified today.WMN on Twitter: @wmnmedia Grace Lynch on Twitter: @gracelynch08

Today's episode is a panel discussion with several impressive ladies - including Kelli Roach (General Counsel of Black Mountain Sand), Christina Sanders (General Counsel of NGP ETP, and Casey Moore (Senior Counsel for Litigation at Vistra Corp). Each of them is a member of the Women's Energy Network - North Texas Division. The vision of the Women's Energy Network is to provide networking and community outreach opportunities and foster career and leadership development. Although I spoke with lawyers today, the organization invites women from all different backgrounds. I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with Kelli, Christina, and Casey. They shared valuable advice, interesting experiences, and lots of laughs too. But I think my favorite moments in our conversation were the really specific, tangible examples of how they've all managed to overcome challenges and insecurities. They're all talented lawyers and I so appreciated learning more about how they got to where they are.

Dr. Laura Demoya shares how she used her experience with burnout to rediscover her self-worth and how she chooses happiness daily. How to Develop Your Own Sense of Self Worth Be Happy with Who You Are Ask for Help When You Need It About Dr. Laura Demoya Dr. Laura Catalina Demoya, F.A.C.P., was born and raised in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She finished high school and college in Florida and went on to pursue her medical degree at UNPHU (Universidad Nacional Pedro Henriquez Ureña) in Santo Domingo in 2001. She is also a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Demoya has 2 daughters and enjoys traveling the world, hiking, and loves the culinary arts. Rising After Burnout Burnout rarely comes out of nowhere, as Dr. Laura Demoya explains. Burnout usually has a slow and gradual approach - but an approach that, if you’re not paying close attention, can still take you completely unawares. When Laura experienced her burnout, she quickly realized she couldn’t keep on the way she was going. Leaving clinical medicine, she started working at a concierge practice for patients in retirement. Laura describes her first experiences with life coaching as realizing that all her dreams are within reach if they’re actually what she wants to achieve. And that’s the best advice she can give you, too: if you want it, you can absolutely make it happen. Cultivating Inner Peace and Self-Worth One of the biggest revelations Laura had was discovering her own sense of self-worth. She stopped punishing herself and started praising her accomplishments - even if those looked different than they used to. Laura cultivated a sense of peace and inner happiness that helped her figure out what truly mattered to her. Another big piece for her was learning when she needed to ask for help - and actually doing it. There is no shame in asking someone to help you when you feel you need it, but so often, women are hesitant and nervous about actually taking that step. Laura’s best advice for discovering her self-worth is to be happy with who you are and where you are now and to ask for help when you need it. Give yourself grace, create space, and find in yourself that peace and self-worth. Homework for Women Physicians How do you find your own sense of peace? How confident are you to ask for help when you need it? Let me know in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode How burnout happens slowly and gradually [3:45] How coaching can help you realize and live out other dreams you might have [6:30] What can happen when you allow yourself a sense of peace and happiness [10:00] Why you should ask for help when you feel you need it [16:30] How creating space and finding self-worth creates peace [21:00] Quotes “Through coaching, I found courage, and I came to a place a self-realization that I deserve what I was looking for and what I wanted.” [7:53] “The other thing that works for me, and I believe a lot of women have trouble with, is not punishing yourself when you have a night out, or you’re on vacation, or you’re traveling. The same goes for your exercise routine.” [18:10] “You have to ask for help. Sometimes you think that you’re doing everything that you can, but you’re not.” [19:37] “There’s always room for improvement and you have to love yourself.” [20:51] “It takes a lot of work. I think it takes much forgiveness and grace that you have to give yourself. You can cry it out, come to peace with who you are and what you want, and know that you don’t owe anybody anything but your happiness and best example, and go on from there.” [23:00] Resources Mentioned Check out the full episode page here What Body Type are You? Hey Y'all It has been a while since we last published an episode in early fall of 2020. Since that time, we, Share The Will Foundation, have been carefully working within our community. In this episode, First Sergeant Will Williams and myself get the opportunity to chat with Monica Velez from the Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) about survivor families and Veterans carrying the torch of Service onwards. We are thankful to Monica in opening up her story of losing both of her brothers; yet, their character and spirit lives on with the work Monica represents with TMF. This week my guest is super timely with the looming election and racial unrest in our country. Juany Torres is the proud oldest daughter of Mexican immigrants and a first generation American. She was born and raised in the south side of San Antonio, Texas and attended Stanford University on a full scholarship by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Juany worked at the White House as part of the Domestic Policy Council under President Obama before joining Google Inc. After her time in the bay area, Juany served as the Nevada Deputy Digital Director for Hillary Clinton's Presidential Campaign before returning back to San Antonio and focusing on increasing civic engagement in her home state of Texas. Juany served as the Deputy Campaign Manager for Ron Nirenberg for Mayor and served in his office before helping her Stanford peer Lina Hidalgo run for Harris County Judge in Houston, Texas. In 2019 Juany began pursuing her Masters in Public Affairs at the University of Texas' LBJ School. Most recently, Juany was selected as the inaugural public policy fellow for WTS Heart of Texas Chapter and Mayor Adler's office. In her role, she is focused on increasing equity and opportunity through transportation policy. But Jauny is so much more than her impressive resume, she is a community leader not only in San Antonio but nationally and is a true inspiration who seek to lend their voice to their community. I know you are wondering what an amazing activist like Juany is doing on a podcast about imposter syndrome. Well, as I said before, no one can escape imposter syndrome – it's something that everyone faces.

In Episode 023 of the podcast, Casey unpacked the pending lawsuit and contract dispute between Megan Thee Stallion and her record label 1501 Entertainment. Has Meg been overreacting, or is the contract as terrible as the social media wars would have you think? Well today, we’re back with an update! The two discuss where both parties of this lawsuit went wrong when they initially signed this contract, the standard terms that should be included in every contract to help steer disputes, and so much more! The Texas Chapter of Stolendroids is once again in session, but this time things get weird really fast. But honestly, how is that any different from our other shows? This episode though is a perfect example of why Collin should never go more than 47 hours without sleep. Once hour 48 hits, there's no telling what will happen. Some things are predictable though. For example, fans are upset about stuff. Also, Microsoft is taking shots at Apple and #hackzohner is sadly still very much a thing. Listen to the tales of woe from the pillow fort we made in Collin's hotel room and be amazed that I haven't had to nuke my identity and start over.HeadlinesGeek News:Kevin Conroy Set To Play Bruce Wayne in The CW's "Crisis on Infinite Earths" Crossover EventDespite awful lore, some Pokémon Go fans want to keep their shadow monstersCaptain Marvel sales are bombing, here is whyTech News:Regret your request for $125 from Equifax? Decade-old spoilers abound as the Texas Chapter of Stolendroids is called to order. Collin takes a trip to The Lone Star State only to learn that he needs to avoid anything with multiple legs that crawls on the ground. This includes chiggers, rabbits, and whatever it was that attempted to rush him as he walked outside. (A chupacabra perhaps?) Thankfully he survived his near-fatal attack so that we could discuss some of what came out of San Diego Comic-Con, specifically Marvel's Phase 4 news from outside my daughter's princess tent. (Spoiler warning: We couldn't fit inside.)That's not all we talk about though. Prepare to not be surprised as you learn that Alan Moore doesn't like yet another Hollywood adaptation of one of his works. He has a history of placing curses on projects that he disapproves of but I have a suggestion for him. I think in this case it would be more effective to buy everyone involved in HBO's Watchmen a chili cheese Blizzard from Dairy Queen. Doing that would shut down production for at least a week and there are no messy curses to deal with. David Messier is a multi-talented artist and music industry powerhouse based in Austin, Texas. A Trustee of the Recording Academy, Messier is an accomplished producer, entrepreneur, singer and songwriter hailed as “ a hurricane force of music.” He has served as President of the Texas Chapter of the Recording Academy and as a Governor of the Academy. Messier was the front man of the Boston-based band Papermoon, and after moving his studio and himself to Austin and working both in music and in philanthropy, received the “Austin Under 40 Award” in the category of Arts and Entertainment. He recently released his new album, the self- reflective Time Bomb, which took only 22 days to write and record at his recording studio in East Austin, Same Sky Productions. Always alert to music and the workings of his lyrical mind, the album’s guitar heavy title track is based on a Wurlitzer lick from one of Messier’s many phone recordings. The Living Roomers , a new punk band comprised of Tru, Lucky and Rico, started in the living room of the band’s home in LA in late 2017 and just self-released their first single, “Screw You” along with a video for the track. Influenced by the Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Ramones, Velvet Underground, X, The White Stripes, Joy Division and Courtney Barnett among many others. The trio calls their title song, “Screw You” a call to action. It pushes back against those who try to put people, women in particular, in boxes, something totally foreign to the fresh sound and deep energy of this trio making a name for itself in LA.
