We spent the past weekend in Atlanta at the annual Olympin Olympic collectors and pin traders show. We had a fun time catching up with other collectors, pin traders, TKFLASTANIs, and--best of all--meeting some listeners! This was also Alison's first trip to Atlanta, so we had to do a little Olympic sightseeing. Nicholas from Olympic Rings and Other Things was kind enough to show us around! We also have a ton of news from upcoming Games! Milan-Cortina 2026 has released the pictograms and look of the Games, which they call the Vibes. Mascots Milo and Tina are also unveiling their (adorable) sport poses on social media every day this month. Brisbane 2032 is in a bit of a bind, with several venue projects already over budget. The new Liberal National Party is reviewing the situation. Also, the Association of National Olympic Committees cut a deal to help small NOCs outfit their athletes for Games through 2032. Dame Lisa Carrington has won the Association of National Olympic Committee's Female Outstanding Sporting Career award at a ceremony in Cascais, Portugal. The event was attended by more than 600 people from the Olympic Movement including IOC President Dr. Thomas Bach, as well as representatives from the world's 206 National Olympic Committees.

While Americans are tuned in to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, many of the athletes competing are calling the Olympic village in Sant Denis home. This is where you will find Africa Station. Saint Denis is the site of the largest immigrant community in France. My guest for this segment of Perspectives is Oliver Nguesson, curator of Africa Station. More than just a fan zone, it is a dynamic living space where Parisians and tourists alike can immerse themselves in the richness of African Heritage. Africa station is a celebration where the Olympic spirit meets African flair. Supported by the city and the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa, the project brings together sports, culture, and community.

In just a few weeks' time, the torch will be lit in Paris to begin the 33rd Olympic summer games. Africa's biggest multisport event - the African Games - get underway in Ghana tonight, with 49 nations competing in 29 different sports. This is the 13th edition of the games – which are held every four years, usually one year before the Olympic Games.But this time they've been delayed by 8 months - since August 2023 - because of a disagreement over marketing rights which delayed the completion of facilities.It's part of an ongoing dispute between the Africa Union (AU) which owns the games, the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and the Association of African Sports Confederations – all of which are meant to work together to put on the event. In this episode of Africa Daily, Alan Kasujja re-lives his childhood memories from the fourth edition of the games held in Nairobi in 1987 as he talks to Africa's former queen of sprints Nigeria's Mary Onyali Omagbemi who lit up the games with phenomenal speed.But with the standards of the games appearing to have dropped, he also talks to Ghanaian Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif, asking if there is a future for the Africa Games.

The widow of Matt Gee, who was on the 1990 Rose Bowl winning squad, is suing the NCAA for wrongful death. The NCAA says it had nothing to do with Gee’s death and his mental decline was from years of hard drinking. Hundreds of similar cases are pending against the NCAA. NCAAVB – Wisconsin female athletes notify police over private photos University of Wisconsin police are investigating how private photos and video of members of the school’s national champion women’s volleyball team got circulated publicly without their consent. Wisconsin’s athletic department says players contacted campus police after they became aware the photos had been made public. The volleyball players aren’t being investigated for wrongdoing. University of Wisconsin police spokesman Marc Lovicott confirmed the investigation, but details are not being disclosed. Olympics – Olympic officials talk with 10 bidders for 2036 Summer Games The International Olympic Committee says it’s in talks with 10 potential candidates to host a future Summer Games. Interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics has been expressed by officials in countries including Egypt, England, India, Indonesia and Qatar. IOC director general Christophe de Kepper did not identify any of the 10 projects addressing the Association of National Olympic Committees meeting in Seoul, South Korea. The 2036 Olympics is the next Summer Games available to be awarded in a mostly secretive process led by the IOC. It seeks to avoid both expensive public campaigning and a vote contested by multiple candidates. NFL – National Football League – Week 7 Last Night Arizona Cardinals 42, New Orleans Saints 34 Cardinals 42, Saints 34 – Cardinals use two pick-6s in first half to down Saints 42-34 Marco Wilson and Isaiah Simmons scored touchdowns on two pick-6s late in the first half and used that stunning change in momentum to lift the Arizona Cardinals over the New Orleans Saints 42-34. The Cardinals snapped an eight-game home losing streak that was the franchise’s longest since 1958. A jury was seated Thursday in a Los Angeles courtroom in the case of a former University of Southern California linebacker who had significant brain damage when he died at age 49. The widow of Matt Gee, who was on the 1990 Rose Bowl winning squad, is suing the NCAA for wrongful death. The NCAA says it had nothing to do with Gee’s death and his mental decline was from years of hard drinking. Hundreds of similar cases are pending against the NCAA. NCAAVB – Wisconsin female athletes notify police over private photos University of Wisconsin police are investigating how private photos and video of members of the school’s national champion women’s volleyball team got circulated publicly without their consent. Wisconsin’s athletic department says players contacted campus police after they became aware the photos had been made public. The volleyball players aren’t being investigated for wrongdoing. University of Wisconsin police spokesman Marc Lovicott confirmed the investigation, but details are not being disclosed. Olympics – Olympic officials talk with 10 bidders for 2036 Summer Games The International Olympic Committee says it’s in talks with 10 potential candidates to host a future Summer Games. Interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics has been expressed by officials in countries including Egypt, England, India, Indonesia and Qatar. IOC director general Christophe de Kepper did not identify any of the 10 projects addressing the Association of National Olympic Committees meeting in Seoul, South Korea. The 2036 Olympics is the next Summer Games available to be awarded in a mostly secretive process led by the IOC. It seeks to avoid both expensive public campaigning and a vote contested by multiple candidates. Wayne is the is a Clinical Professor and the Director, Athletic Training Program at the University of New England. He is a Board Certified Athletic Trainer and has served on the medical staff for the U.S. Women's National Ice Hockey Team since 2015. This EP features Peter Davis who's been working in elite sport management for over 30 years. Originally from Australia, Peter received his MSc from the University of Oregon and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.  Since that time he has had a diverse and unique career in several countries and different sport systems. He has been involved as a high-level sports physiologist, a coach in the US collegiate system, and a high-performance sports administrator. He has worked with professional sports teams, Olympic Teams, and amateur non- Olympic teams at all levels, all ages, and all sports.  Peter started his career in elite sport in 1981 as an Exercise Physiologist for Nike. He eventually found himself at the Australian Institute of Sport, first as a high-performance Exercise Physiologist, then with the “Olympic Athlete Program” to help prepare Australian athletes for the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics. After the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he was recruited by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) to direct their Coaching and Sport Sciences Division. In the lead-up to the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games Peter was named the Director of Sport Sciences, Sports Medicine and Technology for 'Own the Podium'. Peter is now the Founder and Managing partner of APEX Global Sport Group, an international consultancy whose clients include Olympic teams, National Olympic Committees, National Sport Governing Bodies, National Sports Ministries, and individuals in countries across the globe in all areas of high-performance sports planning and development.  In addition to his work with various teams and countries, Peter is also a well-respected speaker in all areas of performance and organizational planning, and management and has delivered dozens of presentations around the world. Last but not least he is a father of four and a grandfather of four.

Twenty-nine athletes competing across 12 sports and from 13 host National Olympic Committees (NOCs) will be part of the IOC Refugee Olympic Team (EOR) Tokyo 2020. The Executive Board (EB) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) today approved the composition of the team.The athletes were selected from among the refugee athletes currently supported by the IOC through the Olympic Scholarships for Refugee Athletes programme. If 2020 was a normal year, we would've just said good-bye to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics--and many athletes would be making big decisions about their futures. Since many athletes retire after an Olympics, we wanted to look at how elite athletes transition out of competitive life. To help us understand this topic, we talked with Leslie Klein, an Olympian who most recently was the Director of Athlete Career and Education (ACE) at the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee until the COVID-19 pandemic eliminated her position. She told us about the efforts of Team USA and other National Olympic Committees to help their athletes plan for life beyond sport. In our visit to TKFLASTAN, we read Phil Andrews thoughts on leadership during COVID-19 and heard how Kikkan Randall plans comebacks. IT IS ONE YEAR UNTIL THE TOKYO 2020 OLYMPICS!!! With all of the celebrations and ceremonies happening in Tokyo and with National Olympic Committees around the world, we couldn't be more excited. We wanted to get some perspective on what it's like on the ground in Tokyo, so we asked Roy Tomizawa to come on our show and give us some insight. Roy's the author of the blog The Olympians: From 1964 to 2020 and the new book 1964: The Greatest Year in the History of Japan – How the Tokyo Olympics Symbolized Japan’s Miraculous Rise from the Ashes (spoiler alert: This will be our book club selection in the run-up to the Tokyo Games, but Roy probably wouldn't mind it if you got your copy now. Neither would we). Naturally, we have a lot of Tokyo 2020 news, including releases of the volunteer uniforms and the medals. We also learned something about Summer Olympics medals design guidelines that we hadn't realized. A number of Tokyo test events are underway, so we decided that we should also run our own fan test event -- test out your viewing situation and send us pictures on Twitter, Insta or our Facebook group with #OFtestevent. (ATR) Gunilla Lindberg talks about the preparations in San Diego for the games in 2019. (ATR) Plans for the inaugural ANOC World Beach Games move ahead following meetings in San Diego over the weekend. The Beach Games will take place in October 2019 with just under 2000 athletes competing in 15 disciplines. Athletes from as many as 206 National Olympic Committees could attend. For the seventh time since San Diego was selected in 2013 as the host for the debut Beach Games, a coordination commission from the Association of National Olympic Committees has visited San Diego to check on preparations. Those meetings were followed by visits from officials of the sports federations which will be staging events in San Diego. ANOC Secretary-General Gunilla Lindberg, IOC member in Sweden, led the team in its inspection over the past few days. She speaks with Around the Rings Editor Ed Hula from San Diego about her visit.

Award winning sports journalist Evelyn Watta began her career as a television intern in her home country of Kenya. She climbed the ladder in a world of male editors proving herself time and again while setting an example for other women where few opportunities existed. Evelyn overcame sexism and broke the glass ceiling more than once. From intern to editor she gained recognition in TV and print and taught herself to be an all-in-one photo-journalist producing, presenting and filming coverage of major sports events. In 2008 Evelyn was recognized as the first broadcast journalist to offer real-time video coverage to and in Kenya while reporting from the Beijing Olympic Games. Four years later she was to be awarded a media honor for exemplary coverage of the London Olympic Games. And in 2014 Evelyn was named the CNN Africa Sports Journalist of the Year. Beyond the sports desk, Evelyn has led and contributed to numerous mentorship programs for journalists around the world as a way to encourage and support young women into the profession and show what is possible. She has served on media committees for National Olympic Committees and National Sports Federations. In 2007 Evelyn became the first African woman, and youngest ever executive committee member of the International Sports Press Association. Having served as Secretary General of AIPS from 2014-2016, she is currently serving as the Vice President and Coordinator of the Women Commission. Why? You can make it fun, it doesn't have to be a chore. Once it becomes a chore, you gotta switch it up.  If you can make it the fun part of your day and something you look forward to, that's a huge win!   Here are 3 of my favorite that I try to incorporate every week 3. Yoga --- abosoultey love it. And no I'm not a long bearded yogi..  I hit it or about 10-15 minutes a day, that's all you need. I like to mix in deep breathing through my nose with it too - just gets me super relaxed, better mobility, gives me more energy for the day, great way to start to attack your day.    2. High intensity interval training - but with a purpose, and things you like to do.  It's quick, its efficient - run 5-10 sprints, throw some tires around, lift a few heavy objects, creating your own workout. You don't have to go to a crossfit gym or something way over the top like that. Have fun creating your own workout - keep it short and intense. Couple times a week and you're golden   3. Play your sport -- As kids we all loved to get out there an play something. Whys that gotta stop? Just because we're not kids we can't play anymore. Bogus!!  I LOVE getting up and down playing basketball, the tennis court, basically anything with competition (not named golf) and I'm all in. Get your kid spirit back.   There it is, the 3pters of the week - Yoga, High intensity interval training, and play.  Overall make it FUN! make exercise enjoyable, definitely doesn't have to be a chore.      FEEDBACK:  I'd love to hear from all of you out there.
