If you haven't listened to our episode with Dr. Michele K. Donnelly, that'll help explain why this is a tough ask. What's the status of venue construction? A little behind? Or right on time? We discuss the women's short programs with the most impact on their countries placements in the event, a heartbreaking tie-breaker scenario for the final team to make the free skate, and the really rough turn around time for the men competing this Olympics, and why the team event should really be last rather than first.
We can't believe it is already here, but we are already diving into the 2022 Olympic Winter Games, starting off with day one of the team event. We discuss COVID complicating qualification for the free, why getting a first outing before the individual event could be a good thing or a bad thing for these skaters, and the likelihood of an intense battle for the top spot in the team event.

Mental Health In Sports: How To Be Mentally Healthy and Happy - Episode 12 - 1st Solo Ep We have 11 episodes released and I thought it time that we have a little chat about something important. I had been wanting to do a solo episode eventually but with everything going on in the world of sports around Mental Health it felt like this was the perfect timing to do it. As a mental performance coach I work with athletes regularly and they share their struggles with confidence and feeling like they aren't measuring up. But there are also moments where they share about their anxiety and more serious challenges as it pertains to their mental health. Then you see athletes like Naomi Osaka being so transparent as well as the big news about Simone Biles and you realize how much this isn't talked about enough. In this episode we use the recent events of Simone Biles pulling out of the 2020(1) Olympics Team competition in gymnastics and Osaka's recent admissions around mental health to talk about how we can be more sensitive and what are some tools to be a support in these situations. There is also advice to parents, families, and coaches of athletes. I also mention other resources and initiatives that are being formed and available as a result of the greater focus and acceptance of being able to talk about mental health. As a society we can do more to support those in need and learn not to make light of someone's challenges just because it doesn't look like we think it should. Mental health is called the invisible Injury because it looks different on everyone. Please reach out to someone if you are struggling and let me know what you found valuable about this conversation. Two resorces mentioned in the episode: https://thelovelandfoundation.org this is for women of color needing mental health support that looks like them. https://www.theconfessproject.com/ This is the initiative to train barbers to be the first line of defense for mental health so check this out to find out more info and to support. A bit about Jeff: Dr Jeff Spencer has had a full life. At the age of 11, he made a commitment to join the 1972 Olympics Team as a cyclist. Against all odds, that dream became a reality. Later, after earning a master’s degree in sports science, Dr Spencer became a chiropractor. At the age of 43 after discovering that his genius father, who was last seen 30 years earlier, died homeless on the streets of NYC, Jeff resolved to spend the rest of his life showing others where they were on their path, what was coming next and the smoothest path forward to reach their bigger future & best legacy. Today Dr Jeff Spencer is a Champion Maker with clients from Tiger Woods to U2, Bulletproof to Nike. He teaches clients his road map experience – how to achieve your goals. SHOW IN BRIEF Dr Jeff Spencer talks about his childhood - the Olympics, becoming a glass blower and world renowned chiropractor until today, where he is a ‘champion maker’ with high powered clients, helping them achieve their goals and stay on track. He talks about having a genius father who died homeless because he didn’t have a person to show him how to get to his goals. Jeff discusses the benefits of having a “Cornerman” in your life – the person who has a rounded view of life, experiences and ambition. Jeff opens up about the life-changing experience of raising his adopted daughter from Columbia. How everything you say matters to children. Just positive thinking isn’t enough without the skill set to get you to where you want to be. Champions Blueprint – the path and steps that need to be taken to achieve your goal in life. TIME CODE 01:40 Nick welcomes Jeff to the show. 02:10 Nick asks Jeff about his background – growing up in Southern California. Becoming an Olympian, learning art of glassblowing to achieving a chiropractic degree and becoming international sports chiropractor. He is motivated by asking himself “How far can I go in this area”. 06:24 Nick asks Jeff “what do you today” – what is it that he is known for. 07:28 Dr Jeff Spencer discusses a typical day in an athletes life – mentally as well as physically. 12:08 Nick asks why high performers and over achievers like Tiger Woods get off track and what they need to do to get back on the right path. 13:44 People don’t change as much physically as they do mentally and emotionally. 14:45 Dr Spencer talks about his father dying on the streets – lack of road map, path in life. People don’t know how to get to where they want to go. 16:05 How do we achieve our goals consistently, repeatedly and achievably? 16:25 What is a “Cornerman”? Three types of advisers – coach, mentor and Cornerman And how a cornerman is a more rounded person in life 20:14 Nick asks Jeff about the experience of raising his adopted daughter from Columbia. You have to make your life worth something. 26:22 Jeff discusses when you’re called up for something – you need to show up. 26:50 Nick and Jeff discuss why positive thinking alone doesn’t help you succeed. You can’t think yourself to a place where you don’t have the skills to do it. 27:50 When your confidence increases your anxiety drops. 28:15 Life can only be as good as the skills you have. 29:45 The reason Jeff’s father died homeless – he was missing two things: Cornerman define where he was and the challenges Road Map that showed him how to take his ambition to achievement. Goal setting is not achievement. 31:15 Nick asks Jeff about his ‘champions blueprint’. Most people follow the ‘gap model’. But the gap is really a system – preparation then performance. 35:30 Nick’s rapid fire questions. Top two or three books influenced your life? What would it say on your tombstone? Achievement that haven’t done yet? Which animal would you be and why? Team Canada took Gold in a dramatic Day 3 of figure skating's team event at the Olympics, and we debate whether the Canadian men's gold medal curse is gone, how much impact a big jump like a triple axel can have on a program, and whether Virtue and Moir's new lift variation is any less scandalous than the previous one.
Day 2 of figure skating's team event at the Olympics determined which countries will be fighting for the medals, and we break down all of the skates in dance, ladies, and pairs, including the relative PCS of the top ladies, strict technical calls in the dance, and how you can prepare to deal with a costume malfunction on Olympic ice.
The Olympics are finally here! We break down all of the skates from day 1 of the team event (including all of the men and pairs) and discuss the extreme pressures of the Olympics, the strategies countries might use for day 2 of the team event, and a reminder from the Olympic audience that pairs figure skating is a pretty amazing thing to watch.
When reigning U.S. Women's Figure Skating Champion Nancy Kerrigan was attacked before the 1994 U.S. Championships, the whole event became front page news. Then it was discovered that the men who planned and carried out the attack were associated with Tonya Harding, Kerrigan's chief rival and the winner of the 1994 Championship. Both Harding and Kerrigan would wind up on the 1994 Olympics Team, which took place a month later. Harding's husband and bodyguard were easily arrested and convicted for the assault. Then Tonya Harding had to plead guilty to hindering prosecution, which meant she was banned for life from the United States Figure Skating Association. After that, Harding became a byword for trash, celebrity culture, and bad life decisions, while Nancy Kerrigan became the leading female figure skater and an icon of the sport.

For our fourth podcast, we talk to former elite runner Ben Rosario, who now spends his time coaching the Northern Arizona Elite Hoka Team. We talk to Ben about how he got his strat in running and talked to Ben about what his high school running career was like. With Ben having run at a D-II school we talked about how high school kids who may not be good enough to run at a D-I school should not give up their running dreams. Ben goes into depth about the possibilities that D-II and D-III schools offer for runners. His advice about finding the right fit for you after high school is pure gold for any high school distance runner. We then talked about how Ben made the transition into coaching after being a runner for the Hanson Brook's distance project. We discussed how his Northern Arizona Elite team ended up in a deal with the Hoka running company. Ben spends a lot of time explaining exactly how his current squad got together to form one of the top teams in the world. We spend a few minutes talking about the unique uniforms for Hoka NAZ-Elite. We talk about the marathon Olympic Trials where NAZ-Elite had a top 6 finisher on both the men and women's side. We also discuss the deep NAZ-Elite 5k and 10k teams in the upcoming U.S. Olympic Trials where 3 of the 24 runners on both sexes are NAZ-Elite members. Ben discusses why he believes there is an advantage to running as a group when training as an elite athlete. We also discuss the overall healthy of the potential U.S. Olympics Team where Ben believes we have medal opportunities from the 800m through the 10k. Final Surge announced Northern Arizona Elite as a partner just recently. We discuss how NAZ started using Final Surge. We talked about how he has been using Final Surge with his team and how his favorite part is you can tell it is made by runners, for runners. NAZ-Elite is making all their running logs available online at FinalSurge.com/NAZElite. Any coach, using Final Surge or any other log should have their athletes look at the NAZ logs to see the types of information that are being included in logs. NAZ-Elite's mission statement is "Train hard, race fearlessly and share every part of our journey with our fans." That is why they completely open up their training logs. We then discussed a recent Scott Smith log entry which ended included: Run - Easy Run + drills/strides/plyos Normal drills. 8 x 150 meter hard but smooth strides. Plyos= 2 x all single leg exercises. 1x all squat jumps/bounds. Ben has a theory that he doesn't want to be just runners, he wants to be athletic. The biggest thing he works on is getting off the ground as quick as possible as many times as possible which is why they do explosive plyo work. This question came in from Twitter… Coach, you have a lot going on in your life right now with the team, writing, family, any time management tips you have for busy athletes? @FinalSurge @BenRosario1 @LucusHumphrey how does Ben manage his time with all he does/ coach, write book, podcast, family etc — Doug Petrick (@DougPetrick1) June 18, 2016 Ben has agreed to give one listener a signed copy of his HS XC book Tradition, Class Pride; you can find out details on that give-a-way at Finalsurge.com/promo. You can get a copy of that book at traditionclasspride.com. Ben can be found in the following places: Ben On Twitter NAZ Elite on Twitter NAZ Elite Training Programs
