Flowing East and West: The Perfectly Imperfect Journey to a Fulfilled Life
Which mountain are you climbing? That's the exact question Bonnie Wan asked herself when her life hit a crisis point, both at work and at home. Instead of staying stuck, Bonnie went all in—taking the same tools she mastered as an Advertising Agency Creative Director and turning them inward. The result? She created a Life Brief—a no-holds-barred roadmap to how she truly wanted to live. And she didn't just skim the surface. Bonnie dug deep into her core values, peeled back her beliefs, and got crystal clear on what she wanted to feel every day. Spoiler alert: It worked. Bonnie unlocked achievements beyond her wildest dreams, and now she's on a mission to help others do the same with her book, The Life Brief, plus workshops and talks worldwide. Don't miss this episode where Bonnie explores her perfectly imperfect journey. Bio Bonnie is creator and author of The Life Brief, a simple and profound action-driving practice that helps people navigate life's biggest and trickiest decisions with clarity, creativity and courage. The Life Brief applies the art and science of brand strategy to how we live our lives, helping people get clear, take meaningful action, and live with greater intention and imagination. As Partner and Head of Brand Strategy at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners (GS&P), Wan leads strategy for Fortune 500 companies including Blackstone, BMW, Comcast/Xfinity, Frito-Lay, and Kraft-Heinz. She also harnesses strategy to create powerful, provocative, award- winning campaigns fighting racial injustice, child sex trafficking, cyberbullying, college campus rape, and gender inequality. Wan has been named an Advertising Icon, an Ad Age Leading Woman, and Chief Strategy Officer of the Year. The Life Brief has evolved from an agency talk to keynotes, workshops and now a best-selling book. The Life Brief: A Playbook for No Regrets Living is the essential tool for aligning your daily actions with your ambition and values. As a Brand Strategist turned Life Strategist, Wan not only helps companies innovate from a place of purpose, but also guides everyday people who seek to realize their potential. Wan has taught The Life Brief at Accenture, AirBnB, Apple, Change.org, Chief, Google, SXSW, and World 50 Group as well as for Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop, and Jane Goodall's Activating Hope Summit. Wan appears in Jeff Goodby and Rich Silverstein's Masterclass on Advertising and Creativity and is featured in the documentary film, The Big Flip, chronicling the lives of four women breadwinners and their families. She has also been interviewed on Katie Couric's Katie show and HuffPost Live. Her articles have been featured by Fast Company, Campaign Magazine, AdAge, and Adweek. This episode of the Power of the Ask podcast features Bonnie Wan, AdAge 2022 Chief Strategy Officer of the Year, partner and Head of Brand Strategy at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners and the bestselling author of “The Life Brief.” An immigrant from Taiwan who lived in both Los Angeles and New York City, Bonnie has always been fascinated by human behavior, by what drives people, and by what fuels their purpose. That curiosity led to her transformative roles in branding and strategy and to develop the “Life Brief,” a creative brief that helps people find clarity about their life goals and navigate challenges with purpose. For many people, the idea of transformation brings images of giant leaps, but Bonnie suggests small changes that can be implemented every day to help create forward momentum. Bonnie has written briefs to fit all aspects of life, from marriage to leadership to finances. She notes that the practice of being very clear and connected to your innermost truth about what you want and what matters most at each stage of your life will help you navigate through that compass. In the financial realm, that means asking the right questions. As a strategist, Bonnie says questions are her best friends. Her first wealth brief question is, ‘What is enough?' The second is, ‘What do you want to be rich in?' Bonnie believes the power of the ask is important to women, especially financially. She declares, “If you don't ask, you don't get.” She concludes by saying women need to know what they're worth, what's sacred and what's worth fighting for. That kind of clarity allows them to pivot their careers and their asks in different ways when the time calls.------------About Bonnie Wan:Bonnie Wan is Partner and Head of Brand Strategy at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners and the bestselling author of “The Life Brief.” AdAge named her the 2022 Chief Strategy Officer of the Year and a 2023 Leading Woman for reaching new heights in an ever-changing marketing landscape. "How do you express what you want in a way that activates you, is unignorable, and automatically aligns your beliefs, your values, and how you show up in the world?” Bonnie Wan knows what it feels like to struggle with burnout and uncertainty about where to go next. As a celebrated advertising strategist she spent years helping brands like Pepsi and BMW get clarity on their values and purpose, but she one day found herself mired and directionless in her own life–a “recovering perfectionist” with a crumbling marriage, a big job, and three young children. So she put her “work brain” to work - and sketched out a creative brief (one of the key tools of the ad trade) for herself, granting clarity on what was missing and what she really wanted in her life. Not only did “the Life Brief” save Bonnie's marriage, recenter her parenting, and catapult her career (she was named Ad Age's Chief Strategy Officer last year)—it has since gone on to help thousands of others through her speaking at Apple, Bain & Co, Change.org, Google, Goop, Jane Goodall's “Activating Hope” Summit, SXSW and more. Her new book — “THE LIFE BRIEF: A Playbook for No-Regrets Living “ — creates a clear guide for anyone to break through life's clutter and create deeper meaning through three simple stages: Get Messy. Get Clear. Get Active. This is a perfect conversation to help so many of us who seem to “have it all” yet feel restless or rudderless. This past year, life's felt a little more cluttered and confusing to me than usual. As I was starting to do some of my end-of-year reflections and planning forward, I asked myself some of my usual questions: "What do I want in the coming year? What do I want to create? What do I want in my LIFE?" And a lot of my answers weren't really satisfying or deeply fulfilling. They were based largely on what I wanted to do and accomplish, and didn't really get into who I wanted to be. Looking for more depth and clarity in what was REALLY burning inside me to create, I discovered Bonnie Wan (today's guest), author of The Life Brief: A Playbook for No-Regrets Living. Today's episode is my conversation with Bonnie as she shares her own story and gets into what a life brief is and what it can do in your life. It's surprisingly simple and yet, lends itself to endless possibilities. In our interview, Bonnie Wan shares: Her personal story and breaking point: what inspired her in this work of helping people with their Life Briefs and writing her book. What is a life brief and who should try writing one? Resilience Without Regrets: Acclaimed Physician on Finding Miracles and Facing Adversity with Dr. Harley Rotbart Many people reach the end of their lives wishing they could change the past. Turning back the clock is impossible, but Dr. Harley Rotbart's new book, No Regrets Living, offers sage guidance to help us better appreciate what we have in our lives, and take greater pride in what we've done with our lives — without spending precious time and energy wishing things had turned out differently. In No Regrets Living, Dr. Rotbart describes the seven keys to a life of wonder and contentment: Belief, Discovery, Healing, Appreciation, Acceptance, Seeking and Growth, and how to cultivate each in your life. Woven into the timeless message of the book are especially timely observations on the COVID-19 pandemic from Dr. Rotbart's expert perspective as an infectious diseases physician, including coping mechanisms and paths for going forward as individuals and as a society. Dr. Rotbart is a man of science who also believes in, and “collects,” miracles. No Regrets Living is the much-awaited follow-up to his previous book, Miracles We Have Seen – America's Leading Physicians Share Stories They Can't Forget. In this new work, Dr. Rotbart reconciles science and faith from his unique perspective as physician, scientist, heart surgery patient and child of a Holocaust survivor. “I have a simple definition of a miracle,” Dr. Rotbart says. “Miracles are objects and events in nature and in our lives that cannot be fully explained or re-created. Yes, like the unimaginable true stories written by physicians in the Miracles We Have Seen book, but I believe the inside of the living human beings I have seen in the operating room and the tiniest of human cells I have seen under a microscope in my laboratory are equally miraculous and unexplainable. And you needn't go to medical school or use a microscope to appreciate the ubiquity of miracles. They are all around us — we only need to open our eyes and hearts to recognize them.” A nationally renowned infectious disease specialist, Dr. Rotbart is also a pediatrician, parenting expert, speaker and educator. He is Professor and Vice Chair Emeritus of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and author of more than 175 medical and scientific publications, and five previous books for general audiences: Miracles We Have Seen; 940 Saturdays; No Regrets Parenting; Germ Proof Your Kids; and The On Deck Circle of Life. A renown Pediatrician offers coincidence awareness as a key to No Regrets Living. Some astounding medical coincidences illustrate this idea. In this episode, Harley Rotbart discusses phenomenal medical coincidences and relates them to the question of fate. He also addresses the problems with the Law of Very Large Numbers: the favorite explanation for coincidences by statisticians. This “law,” which cannot be proven, asserts that the strange events will inevitably occur in our busy world with its infinite opportunities for overlapping events. With a title like "No Regrets Living", how could we resist the opportunity to speak with Dr Harley Rotbart? In this interview, we explore how to live without regrets if you already have regrets and facing down the two regrets we have - the things we've done and the things we haven't done.
'A man is not old until regrets take the place of dreams.' (John Barrymore) 'Miracles are objects and events in nature and in our lives, that cannot be fully explained or recreated' (Dr. Harley Rotbart) Dr. Harley Rotbart is the author of ”No Regrets Living: 7 keys to a life of Wonder and Contentment”, is an infectious disease specialist, Professor and Vice-Chair Emeritus of Paediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Having over 175 medical and scientific publications, his career is deeply rooted in science. Yet his experiences as a physician at Children's Hospital Colorado, taught him to believe in miracles, and that there are things beyond our ability to know. His 7 Keys to a life of content encompass belief in a power greater than ourselves, discovering the messiah within each of us, healing evil whether within ourselves or in the world around us, appreciating and giving thanks, accepting things we regret by putting them into the context in which they occurred, seeking purpose and also self-forgiveness and finally growing, by looking back and seeing how far we have come and knowing there is growth still to come. Dr. Rotbart suggests that we have to discover miracles around us in order to appreciate the non-miraculous moments in our lives, that is, discover the magnificence around us. Live like you are dying and don't put off important things to the future. Accept that there is something greater than us, whatever your unique belief may be, and be humbled by knowing there are some things that are out of our control. Today on Feminine Roadmap we are talking about no regrets living with Dr. Harley Rotbart. Dr. Harley share his roadmap for putting aside past regrets and moving ahead with less regrets. Often when we get to the second half of life we begin looking at the end, the time we have left. We ask questions of our past, our decisions, how or if we can do it differently moving forward. Dr. Harley suggests that no regrets living begins with looking at the past as a pattern of faithful occurrences that had to happen to make us who we are today then practicing self-forgiveness and intention as we move forward. Next we add the belief in something greater than ourselves so we can appreciate that there are things that we cannot always control or understand. Once we've accepted that we can then seek to create a sense of appreciation for what was, and is, and is to come from a better perspective. Our past successes and failures are our tutors to practice no regrets living. While no life is without regrets, Dr. Harley wants listeners to accept what has transpired in our lives, release our sense of guilt and live in this moment with our full presence, with complete intention. No regrets living is about embracing what can be controlled, letting go of what cannot and living forward with purpose. We invite you to grab a cuppa something wonderful, a good friend and start no regrets living today! Just tune in to this life changing conversation.
