Why does the Ascension of Jesus—one of the great feasts of the Church—end up celebrated on a Sunday in most dioceses, while others keep it on Thursday? And what does that tell us about our faith, traditions, and the challenges of Holy Days of Obligation? Father Dave and Deacon Bob unpack the significance of the Ascension within the Paschal Mystery, showing why it's more than just a “tag-on” after Easter, but a powerful reminder of Christ's victory and our shared destiny in Him. But as usual, sports, movies, and mild chaos before the theology kicks in. Join them as they recap the NBA and NHL playoffs, share stories from the Indy 500, Monaco Grand Prix, and Coca-Cola 600, and offer a review of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning (complete with seat mix-ups and a D-Box adventure). They also chat about Father Dave's solo Thai food outing, pay tribute to the late George Wendt—aka Norm from Cheers—and reflect on how these everyday moments can point us toward joy, gratitude, and community. The episode wraps with humor, brotherhood, and a reminder that no matter where you are—whether at a car race, a movie theater, or Mass on Sunday—our true hope is in Jesus Christ. And yes, the Topps Pope Leo XIV baseball card is still on their wish list. Highlighted Sections (00:00) Playoff Plot Twists, Fast Cars, and Father Dave's Almost-Trip to the Indy 500 Father Dave and Deacon Bob kick off the episode with a rundown of the latest sports headlines, including the Pacers and Knicks battling in the NBA playoffs, and the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers making waves in the NHL. They also discuss the excitement surrounding the Indy 500, the Monaco Grand Prix, and the Coca-Cola 600. (12:07) Movie Review: Mission Impossible + Solo Movie Etiquette Father Dave recounts his solo movie theater adventure to see Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning, complete with a funny seating mishap and his first-ever D-Box chair experience. They reflect on the perks (and occasional awkwardness) of going to the movies alone, and whether movie theaters are best for deep conversations or just a chance to unwind. (20:03) Thai Food, Pity Tips, and Remembering Norm The conversation shifts to Father Dave's recent solo Thai food experience—one of the best meals he's ever had, which he may or may not have posted about on Instagram—and a reflection on how dining alone can be a quiet joy. They also pay tribute to the late George Wendt (Norm from Cheers)and share laughs about a show that captured the essence of community in the most unexpected places. (26:13) Relics on Display and Catholic Curiosities The hosts dive into the story of St. Teresa of Avila's relics being publicly displayed, exploring the beauty, reverence, and quirkiness of Catholic traditions. They discuss how relics inspire faith, connect us to the saints, and remind us that the Church is both ancient and alive. (28:41) Thursday or Sunday? The Ascension's Place in the Paschal Mystery Father Dave and Deacon Bob unpack why the Ascension is a crucial part of the Paschal Mystery, how it's celebrated differently across dioceses, and why it's much more than just a calendar quirk. They encourage listeners to see these Holy Days as not just “rules to follow” but as moments to pause, celebrate, and remember the story of salvation. (37:45) Closing Blessings, Pentecost Prep, and Hope in the Everyday The episode wraps with reflections on Pentecost, Holy Days of Obligation, and staying grounded in faith—whether you're at a playoff game, a movie theater, or wrangling kids at home. Father Dave offers a prayer for graduates, families, and the entire They That Hope community, with a reminder that hope is our anchor—on Thursdays, Sundays, or any day in between. Five years ago this month, I died. I mean, not for long—but long enough. In this episode, I talk about it. The cardiac arrest. The four-year curse. The memory gaps. The part where Kristen saved my life on a mattress, then got told I was “end of life” and left in a hospital hallway with no cell service. I don't usually get into this on the podcast, but it's time. I also talk about what it's like to return to clinic too soon, what empathy fatigue feels like when it hits you mid-exam, and why Australia's healthcare system makes me want to scream and cry and hug a Medicare card. Oh, and yes, I checked—I did not get a single ophthalmology consult while hospitalized. Rude. Takeaways: I Gave the Saddest Talk in Australia—and They Thanked Me for It. Nothing like telling an entire country of surgeons: "Whatever the U.S. does, do the opposite." We've Got Trauma. We've Got Memory Loss. We've Got... Thai Food? My hippocampus was out to lunch, but at least I wasn't. Shoutout to solo dinners in Sydney. Cardiac Arrest Might've Been the Easy Part. Kristen had to do chest compressions. Then fight a hospital. Then explain to our kids why Dad was suddenly gone. Empathy Fatigue is Real. And It's Ugly. I went back to work too soon. And I knew it the moment I got irrationally annoyed by dry eye complaints. This week we are excited to welcome not just one, but two amazing guests to our table Yu Nakamura and Nattinee Sirirattanapol, aka Pam, who are changing the face of sake in Thailand with an array of amazing projects and collaborations! So join us as one of our regular hosts Chris Hughes sat down with them at our base the Japan Sake and Shochu Information Center in the heart of Tokyo for a chat with them. Find out what brought them together and how they got into sake. Their company TASTE HUNTERS and especially their brand Sake Seeker had caught our attention before, so we were eager to learn more about it as well as their amazing sake concepts and the unique strategies that helped them import sake. We are also exploring how they are connecting sake breweries with outlets to change the image of sake in Thailand. For this interview, we were incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to join one of their events in Tokyo. Sake Seeker was in town to showcase a fusion of modern Thai food and sake. Needless to say we were excited to experience just how amazing these combinations of food and sake are firsthand. As Chris pointed out, it is not an entirely new concept and certainly a Thai Green Curry (if not too spicy) can pair wonderfully with some sake, however it was really brilliant to see all the aromatics, so famous for Thai food, coming together and perfectly match with the pairings Yu and Pam suggested. So prepare yourself as in this episode, we not just learn more about the Thai sake market, but also venture a little bit in the the world of gourmet, as our guests share why you may do well to get a bottle of sake to pair with your Thai cuisine. For anyone curious about Sake Seeker and upcoming events, make sure to check out their Sake Seeker Instagram, as these ladies really do not seem to stop, with many great events constantly on their schedule (and spread all around the world). And of course, you can (or should) also check out Yu's Instagram to learn more about her creative endevours and last byt but not least her amazing Grandma's Recipes on Youtube. As always, if you have questions or comments please do share them with us at questions@sakeonair.com or head over to our Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook we would love to hear from you! We'll be back very soon with plenty more Sake On Air. Until then, kampai! Sake On Air is made possible with the generous support of the Japan Sake & Shochu Makers Association and is broadcast from the Japan Sake & Shochu Information Center in Tokyo. Sake on Air was created by Potts K Productions and is produced by Export Japan. Our theme, “Younger Today Than Tomorrow” was composed by forSomethingNew for Sake On Air.
Katie Chin escaped what she jokingly describes as "dumpling prison" only to be so influenced by her heritage and Asian cuisines that she left her SVP role at FOX to start her career as a chef and author. It was her mom's inspiring success story that eventually led Katie to a life of cooking, writing cookbooks, appearing on TV shows like Iron Chef and The Today Show, and creating a one-woman show called Holy Shitake: A Wok Star is Born. Prepare to be entertained and inspired by the story of how an immigrant woman making 50 cents an hour as a seamstress with no high school diploma went on to ... well, we won't spoil the ending. In this interview, Katies tells us her "must try" Cantonese dish recommendations and where she goes in San Francisco to get them. She also explains what food is like in Guangzhou, China, and what kind of food you'll find at the food market there, before she reveals what other areas of China and Asia at large that she loves for cuisine. Learn fun facts like "Korean chefs use Coca Cola to break down proteins," and what bulgogi pizza is. Plus, get tips for cities in the U.S. and Canada where you can find great Asian cuisine. This episode also features a bonus segment with Gregory Gourdet, the newly crowned James Beard award winner for Best Chef: Northwest and the Pacific. A past guest on Travel That Matters' Master Chef series, Gregory talks about his many adventures in Thailand and how the country's cuisine helped shape the chef that he is today. --- You can listen to the full episode of Gregory Gourdet on Travel That Matters here: https://link.chtbl.com/GregoryGourdet --- To learn more about Katie Chin, visit www.chefkatiechin.com Watch Katie Chin on the Kelly Clarkson Show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TjgLEz1KVU&t=1s Follow Katie Chin on Twitter & Instagram: @chefkatiechin --- This season of Travel That Matters is presented by Silversea, the world's most luxurious ocean and expedition voyages for the curious.
