Bones was a headliner that put on a show that was spellbinding, funny, and captivating as Bones broke into breakdancing! So, I enjoyed his performance but I was knocked off my feet as he shared his story of growing up Black in UK; getting into Bboying, and then into magic.Magical Bones is one of the most exciting talents to emerge from the Magic scene in recent years; he has been entertaining audiences globally for over a decade. One of the National Theatre's most successful shows last year was the brand new play, The Motive and the Cue. Emilio Doorgasingh is another member of the Little Life family playing “Andy”, Jude's Doctor at the Richmond Theatre, Harold Pinter Theatre and Savoy Theatre this year. This episodes contains spoilers! His other credits include, for screen: Casualty Ted Lasso Series 2 Game of Thrones For stage: The Kite Runner, West End and UK Tour Present Laughter Much Ado About Nothing, The Globe Best of Enemies, Young Vic and Noel Coward Theatre alongside David Harewood and Zachary Quinton A Little Life Amongst many more… Emilio discusses his two huge theatre projects he's been a part of this year, Best of Enemies (dir. Jeremy Herrin) and A Little Life (dir. Ivo Van Hove). With Best of Enemies he played multiple characters in James Graham's play that explored the political landscape of the USA during the 1960s. From journalists to Gore Vidal's (Zachary Quinto) life partner and the demands of a high fuelled energetic show with multiple costume changes and characters to jump between every night. For A Little Life he played “Andy” a doctor who has a difficult relationship with Jude (James Norton). Emilio talks about how he found the parallels of Andy's character, how on one hand he's a medical professional frustrated that his patient won't take his advice, and on the other he's a compassionate soul who doesn't want to push his already deeply traumatised friend into something he doesn't want to do. Stop hurting himself and get better. Emilio gave a stellar performance as Andy and in his many roles in Best of Enemies and it was a pleasure to talk to you sir! Since arriving into the UK 20 years ago, Damian Humbley has become one of the most eminent figures on the musical theatre scene. After taking over the role of Walter in The Woman in White at the Palace Theatre, Damian has since taken on roles such as Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors, Charley in Merrily We Roll Along and is now appearing in the all-star cast of Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends. A lifelong Sondheim aficionado himself, he tells us about his love of Sondheim and how amazing it feels to be working alongside such established talents on Old Friends. In this exclusive interview, Damian Humbley looks back over his career, telling us about how the theatre scene has changed and is continuing to evolve. After recently starring in The Great British Bake Off musical, we hear him talk about how it's becoming increasingly challenging creating shows that are as commercially successful as they are critically. After the show premiered in Cheltenham, the show made its way to the Noel Coward Theatre where it had a modest run and gained new fans as well. Old Friends also marks the first time Damian has returned to the Gielgud theatre having previously starred in the acclaimed but short-lived production of Lend Me a Tenor. It's interesting to hear Damian provide his insight and analysis of what is currently happening across the theatre landscape as he looks ahead to the next 20 years of his career. He remains committed to creating high quality pieces of art and shares his hopes of working on more Sondheim pieces going forwards.Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends runs at the Gielgud Theatre until 6th January 2024
Few of us realise the dreams we have as 8-year-olds, but actor, screenwriter and director Mark Gatiss, obsessed with horror, Dr Who and Sherlock Holmes as a child, has managed to incorporate his early passions into his professional life. Now a grown-up with an astonishing catalogue of work, Gatiss no longer pursues the macabre with adolescent fervour, but a darkness continues to run through even the most camp and comedic additions to his oeuvre. From December 2023 he'll be starring in The Motive and the Cue at the Noel Coward Theatre whilst directing The Unfriend at Wyndham's Theatre next door. Tickets available now.

In this Father's Day episode special I am speaking to theatre legend, Thelma Holt. At 89 years old, Thelma is an encyclopaedia of stories and anecdotes, and, coupled with a fascinating life and career, she really is the dream guest for any podcast - so, I was delighted to hear we both lost our father's at the same ripe old age of 7, and I could get her onto mine. Thelma, a graduate of RADA and co-founder of the Open Space Theatre, became director of the Roundhouse in 1976 before joining Peter Hall at the National Theatre as commercial producer. In 1987 she received the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement for her international work at the National. She received a second Olivier Special Recognition Award in 2020. After leaving the NT, for Peter Hall she produced Orpheus Descending with Vanessa Redgrave and The Merchant of Venice with Dustin Hoffman in London and New York. Her inaugural production as an independent producer was Three Sisters with Vanessa Redgrave, Lynn Redgrave and Jemma Redgrave. Subsequent productions include Tango at the End of Winter (directed by Yukio Ninagawa) and Hamlet both with Alan Rickman in the leading role, A Doll's House with Janet McTeer, which won four Tony Awards, The Clandestine Marriage with Nigel Hawthorne and Kean with Antony Sher. She represented the Cameron Mackintosh Drama Fund at Oxford University for 20 years, is an Emeritus Fellow of St Catherine's College and became a Distinguished Friend of Oxford in 2006. She was delighted that Cameron Mackintosh named a bar at the Noel Coward Theatre as a tribute to her in 2019. As Associate Producer for the RSC she has, with HoriPro Inc, toured Japan with the RSC's productions of Othello and A Midsummer Night's Dream. She co-produced in the West End the RSC's five Jacobean plays, The Taming of the Shrew and Tamer Tamed, All's Well That Ends Well, The Crucible, The Canterbury Tales, Imperium, Don Quixote and most recently Kunene and the King. In Japan she co-produced with Horipro Inc. The Merchant of Venice and Anjin – The English Samurai, both directed by Gregory Doran. Thelma was producer for all of Yukio Ninagawa's productions that were performed in the UK for a period of 30 years, including his final memorial production of Macbeth at the Barbican in 2017. In recognition of her promotion of Japanese theatre, she was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by the Emperor of Japan. This bio merely scrapes the surface of Thelma's life and achievements - as does this episode - due to the fact that, as Thelma puts so brilliantly towards the end of the episode, ‘life is a hell of a lot of fun'. And fun she has had. I feel very lucky to have Thelma Holt on Daddy Issues Podcast. This week Libby Purves is joined by Ben Goddard, Dame Catherine, Jeff Pearce and David Wood. Ben Goddard is playing the role of Jerry Lee Lewis in the musical 'Million Dollar Quartet' inspired by the actual event that took place on 4th December 1956 at Sun Records in Memphis, when Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis came together to make music for the first and only time. 'Million Dollar Quartet' is at the Noel Coward Theatre, London WC2. Dame Catherine was a banker before becoming a Benedictine Nun. She co-founded The Benedictine Nuns of Holy Trinity Monastery, East Hendred, the first community of contemplative Benedictine nuns to be established in England for more than fifty years. They are using the internet and other innovations in order to make their message work in the 21st Century and are launching online retreats this month. Jeff Pearce was born in the slums of Liverpool in 1953, and from an early age he worked with his mother selling second hand clothes on a market stall. Leaving school at fourteen, unable to read or write, he embarked on an amazing journey, becoming a millionaire by the time he was thirty, losing everything in the nineties recession. Within ten years, however, he won the highest accolade in the fashion business, 'Independent Retailer of the Year 2002' at the Drapers Annual Awards. His memoir A Pocketful of Holes and Dreams is published by Penguin. David Wood is a children's dramatist, author, actor, director, composer and magician. He wrote his first play for children in 1967 and has since written over seventy more. His adaptation of 'Goodnight Mister Tom' together with three of his other adaptations, 'George's Marvellous Medicine', 'The Tiger Who Came to Tea' and 'Shaun the Sheep' - the latter two, David directed - are simultaneously touring the UK. Also 'David Wood's Storytime' is at the Arts Theatre, London during Easter.
