This week, JJ tests Tucker's inherited swap-meet instincts with a game of Facebook Marketplace Challenge, featuring a suspicious Big Bird cookie jar, an outdoor wedding bar, church pews, a Kool-Aid Man comic book, an Old Style beer sign, and a build-a-body Inspector Gadget Happy Meal toy. Then the conversation wanders through the agony of selling things online, a mysterious pair of valuable designer sunglasses, Trader Joe's sesame crackers, IKEA's retail trap, Swedish meatballs, and JJ's master plan for Tucker's future wedding.

Chris flies solo today, without Mitzi on this Monday, but still manages to keep it (mostly) on the sunny side! Today, on National Tartan Day, and the year’s 250th anniversary of our Declaration of Independence, we explore the fascinating history and linkage between our Declaration, and the Scottish Declaration of Arbroath, along with a special bonus surprise anniversary connection of the “Triumphal Entry” of Jesus Christ on Apr 6, 32 AD (10th of Nisan) spoken of in all four Gospels! If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. – John 8:36 KJV Triumphal Entry – in all four Gospels! Mat 21:1–11 Mar 11:1–10 Luk 19:28–40 Jhn 12:12–19 From the National Tartan Day Time and Date page: The Scottish Declaration of Independence was signed on April 6, 1320. The American Declaration of Independence was, in fact, modeled on this particular document. Almost half of the signers of the American Declaration of Independence were of Scottish descent. The US Senate Resolution on National Tartan Day was passed on March 20, 1998. From that point onward, National Tartan Day was designated as a day for all Americans, particularly those of Scottish descent, on April 6 each year. From the summary of John King Bellassai’s Two Declarations with a Common Purpose: The Link between 1320 and 1776: Tartan Day in the United States is April 6th, which is also the anniversary of the signing of the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath. The significance of this date is the striking similarities in phrasing and intent between the Declaration of Arbroath and the Declaration of Independence. A key to understanding this link is the fact that the American Revolution came right on the heels of the Scottish Enlightenment. While Scottish immigrants were a small part of the general colonial population, their influence on the worldview held by the educated segment of the colonial population, most notably Thomas Jefferson was very influential. Several other key events including the fact that Jefferson's mother's family were of Scottish decent of one of the signers of the Declaration of Arbroath and his Scottish William & Mary professor William Small, whom Jefferson described as his mentor, most notably also played a role in the creation of the Declaration of Independence. To suppose them to have surrendered these in any other way than by equal rules and general consent was to suppose them idiots or madmen, whose acts were never binding. To suppose them surprised by fraud, or compelled by force, into any other compact, such fraud and such force could confer no obligation. Every man had a right to trample it under foot whenever he pleased. In short, he asserted these rights to be derived only from nature and the author of nature; that they were inherent, inalienable, and indefeasible by any laws, pacts, contracts, covenants, or stipulations, which man could devise. [x] John Adams, A Dissertation on the Canon and Feudal Law – Teaching American History In a word, let every sluice of knowledge be opened and set a-flowing. The encroachments upon liberty in the reigns of the first James and the first Charles, by turning the general attention of learned men to government, are said to have produced the greatest number of consummate statesmen which has ever been seen in any age or nation. The Brookes, Hampdens, Vanes, Seldens, Miltons, Nedhams, Harringtons, Nevilles, Sidneys, Lockes, are all said to have owed their eminence in political knowledge to the tyrannies of those reigns. The prospect now before us in America, ought in the same manner to engage the attention of every man of learning, to matters of power and of right, that we may be neither led nor driven blindfolded to irretrievable destruction. Nothing less than this seems to have been meditated for us, by somebody or other in Great Britain. There seems to be a direct and formal design on foot, to enslave all America. This, however, must be done by degrees. The first step that is intended, seems to be an entire subversion of the whole system of our fathers, by the introduction of the canon and feudal law into America. The canon and feudal systems, though greatly mutilated in England, are not yet destroyed. Like the temples and palaces in which the great contrivers of them once worshipped and inhabited, they exist in ruins; and much of the domineering spirit of them still remains. The designs and labors of a certain society, to introduce the former of them into America, have been well exposed to the public by a writer of great abilities; and the further attempts to the same purpose, that may be made by that society, or by the ministry or parliament, I leave to the conjectures of the thoughtful. But it seems very manifest from the Stamp Act itself, that a design is formed to strip us in a great measure of the means of knowledge, by loading the press, the colleges, and even an almanac and a newspaper, with restraints and duties; and to introduce the inequalities and dependencies of the feudal system, by taking from the poorer sort of people all their little subsistence, and conferring it on a set of stamp officers, distributors, and their deputies. But I must proceed no further at present. The sequel, whenever I shall find health and leisure to pursue it, will be a “disquisition of the policy of the stamp act.” In the mean time, however, let me add, — These are not the vapors of a melancholy mind, nor the effusions of envy, disappointed ambition, nor of a spirit of opposition to government, but the emanations of a heart that burns for its country's welfare. No one of any feeling, born and educated in this once happy country, can consider the numerous distresses, the gross indignities, the barbarous ignorance, the haughty usurpations, that we have reason to fear are meditating for ourselves, our children, our neighbors, in short, for all our countrymen and all their posterity, without the utmost agonies of heart and many tears. Tartan Day has expanded into an entire Tartan Week in New York City and Angus, and into multi-day events in some other locations, including Washington, DC. The name Scotland Week has also been promoted in Scotland. The events typically have parades of pipe bands, Highland dancing, and other Scottish-themed activities. In 1998, the efforts of the coalition and the Caledonian Foundation (led then by JoAnne Phipps), with the legislative sponsorship of Senator Trent Lott, resulted in United States Senate Resolution No. 155 (introduced March 6, 1998) to adopt April 6 as National Tartan Day. The resolution passed March 20, 1998, “to recognize the outstanding achievements and contributions made by Scottish Americans to the United States”; it also referred to the predominance of Scots among the Founding Fathers of the United States and claimed that the American Declaration of Independence was “modelled on” the Scottish Declaration of Arbroath. The now quasi-official National Tartan Day was held annually thereafter; The Washington Times reported in 2000 on the event, by which time it was already growing into a three-day affair in Washington, DC. I've seen alternative & sustainable energy technology evolve tremendously in my lifetime, and yet I know there are applications, like hydroelectric energy, that continue to be valuable contributors to our world. One that, sadly, has diminished mightily in most of our eyes, is the water-pumping windmills. At one time they were spread widely across our country, but now they are mostly broken, non-functional, and rusty relics seen here-and-there.

Time for another episode of At The Parties w/ Hobert, where PMT host Hobert walks around a party and asks fellow partiers what movies they've seen recently, and what they thought of them. It's a movie review show where everyone's a little tipsy and full. At this year's annual hotdog-themed Memorial Day bash, Hobert took a break from grilling to chill, have an Old Style, hear about the latest current releases and old favorites, briefly develop a star system and then drop it, and do a lot of plugging for Gabewatch (next show June 28th!).FriendshipFantastic PlanetMission: Impossible - Final ReckoningMechanical Violator HakaiderAguirre, the Wrath of GodHolesSinnersSpeed RacerPersonaDidiThe Last RodeoHot Fuzz (aka Shaun of the Dead)JazzMoulin Rouge!Real (2017)The Final GirlsThe Shrouds
The bracket contest is BACK! Everyone's favorite segment returns at the end of this show. The well is stocked with magazines and toys and Tony is doing his “very best” to keep out of there as he has to guess which is better: Michelob Golden Ultra Light Gold Bock, or Natty Daddy ICE Baddie? Good luck binch! Anyways, Tony and I spent way too much time on Bulls crap and we had a highly disjointed AF1 update of the week - it seems like the league has been around for years and yet they've only played 6 games and one team has somehow been in 3 of them? Also, the show has a bad and dangerous text message leak and we are sent to the gulag. Tony revisited some of his favorite Maffcos and Mountain Cultures and I tried to figure out if Luka Modric's brewery is as good and cool as him. Next week! The bracket returns with the RETRO BEERS!! Here lately I've been more inclined to take a step back from world of modern technology when it comes to the time i get to spend in the woods by picking up things like a recurve bow instead of a compound, investing in wool instead of fleece, trading camo for mute colors and plaid patterns and so on. So when given the opportunity to sit down with dixie decoys and discuss their modern take on traditional duck hunting gear I naturally jumped right on it. It's interesting to look at the history of some of the original camo patterns like frog skin camouflage. Frog skin was the United States first attempt at disruptive coloration camouflage and was first issued to the marines in 1942, and by the 1980s was in widespread use in hunting garments. Dixie Decoys offers a version of that and a lot more traditional water fowling attire but we'll get more into all of that in the episode. Pabst Brewing Company has announced a new brewing contract agreement with Anheuser-Busch InBev. The contract comes after a two-decade long contract agreement with Molson Coors came to an end in December 2024.Beginning in the first quarter of 2025, Pabst will begin production using several AB InBev facilities.Since the closing of Pabst's Milwaukee brewery in 1996, the company has relied on third-party plants to brew legacy brands like Pabst Blue Ribbon, Old Style, and Old Milwaukee. Now, AB InBev will give Pabst the space for greater supply, as well as the potential to grow its portfolio as the consumer market shifts.Download and listen to the audio version below and click here to subscribe to the Today in Manufacturing podcast.
One of the things I love about watching virtuoso artists perform is how easy they make it look. For instance, just this past summer I attended a reunion of many of us who attended the Salzedo Summer Harp Colony in Camden, Maine. One of the highlights of that weekend was a concert of music written by Carlos Salzedo, and the star performer on that concert was Judy Loman. She is in her eighties, and she walked onto the stage with as much comfort and ease as if she were in her own harp studio at home. One of the pieces she played was Salzedo's Variations on a Theme in the Old Style. This is a monster piece, very long and very difficult. She told the audience how she first heard and fell in love with the piece when she was taking lessons with Salzedo in Maine in the summer as a young child - I think she was ten. As she was walking to her lessons, she heard this piece wafting from the windows of houses where other older harpists were practicing it. She asked Mr. Salzedo if she could learn it, and he told her she could learn it when she was fourteen years old. I believe he actually let her learn it when she was twelve. She said she still loves it and has been playing it ever since. So here she was on stage, over seventy years later, playing the Variations for us. This wasn't just brilliant playing for an eighty-something year old. Hers was just incredible playing. And here's my point - she made it look so easy. Most of us harpists break a sweat when we play this piece. When we finish, we are mopping our brows and feel like we've run a marathon. But not Judy. It looked - and sounded- as easy for her as playing a simple little ditty. Every motion was just what it needed to be and nothing more. I'm not talking just about arm motions or raising. Her arms and hands were calm when she played. Hers is an efficient technique, one that allows her to play with security and strength and without extra energy. That kind of efficiency, that kind of stillness, is what we should all strive for in our technique, and it's never more important to think about than now when the holiday frenzy is in full swing. Today, we'll talk about how you can add stillness to your harp playing right now in your technique, in your playing and in yourself. I have some simple tips that will help you feel more relaxed not just in the holidays but after the holidays too. Can anyone make Malört, the controversial Chicago wormwood liqueur, taste good? Classically a shot you have unsuspecting Chicago visitors try, maybe paired with an Old Style for a Chicago handshake, Malört has been described as tasting like bug spray or gasoline. Lando walks us through some of the history of the company, before Andy and Mucci make some cocktails to try to see if they can make Malört taste good (or hide its bite a little bit). Andy has the guys try his own concoction, Andy's Delight (you heard it here first!) and Mucci cribs from Wicker Park speakeasy The Violet Hour. Who made the best cocktail? As Marla Gibbs (look her up, Boomer. Did I get that right?) once said, “there's no place like home!” And she was obviously singing about Skokie, Illinois - home of a cookie cutter AMC Movie Palace so glorious, it rivals only Chicago's famous Esquire Theater, now home to a shuttered Dallas-based steak chain. (#Progress) Usually, Tony and T.J. only go on post-Bears game movie dates when it involves seeing the latest Marvel sequel to a Marvel sequel. (Turn up the volume on those explosions, projector man!) But a special field trip was made after a SEASON-TURNING BEARS WIN, to go see the limited, first ever theatrical release of Paul McCartney's “One Hand Clapping”. Is the film better on the big screen than tucked away on the “Band On The Run” Archive Collection DVD? Does the music rock even harder in the theater? What's the deal with popcorn prices these days, Obama? Tony and T.J. ask these salient and Soily questions, and also ponder from the backyard (of the theater):

They say that only two things in life are certain, death and taxes. But if you're a harpist you know there is a third certainty; at some point, often at the wrong point, you're going to break a string. I remember one performance with my flutist friend Joan when one of my high strings broke as I played it at the end of a glissando near the end of the piece we were playing. When we had finished the piece, I began to change the string while she joked with the audience that the string had broken on time and in tune. We had been playing concerts together for years at that point so she also gave the harp talk to the audience while I finished changing and tuning the string. Not all string breakage is so convenient, of course. A few years ago, I was playing a big flashy solo piece as part of a program with various performers. The piece was Salzedo's “Variations on a Theme in the Old Style,” The piece is in G Major and it's about 12 minutes long. I was less than a minute into the piece when I broke the last string I would have expected to break, the lowest wire G string on the harp. In many pieces, that wouldn't have been an issue, but this string was part of every variation from beginning to end, and in fact, was in the last chord of the piece. It was critical. Two thoughts flashed simultaneously through my mind. First, I'm going to have to stop and fix this string. Second, I had not only broken a string, but I had broken the most important rule for any harpist playing anywhere. Instead of having all my strings with me backstage, I had left my wire string set in my car which was in the parking garage a couple of blocks away. Not good. While a broken string is a fact of every harpist's life, it doesn't have to be a disaster, even in a performance, as long as you have the right replacement string and you know how to tie the all-important knot. On today's show, we'll review string care, string storage, the different kinds of strings and which to choose for your harp, and I'll even give you some knot-tying tips. All of these are really important as we here in the northern hemisphere come into high summer, which is a season of high string breakage. But how did I resolve my broken string dilemma? Here's a hint: it was solved in a most surprising and simple way and without running to the parking garage. I'll tell you the whole story later in the show. As they say, stay tuned! “My ultimate recommendation [for Górecki's Symphony No. 3] goes not to Nonesuch's success, but to the moving recording on Koch Schwann [reissued here on Alto] – this is heartfelt music-making, pure and simple, that succeeds admirably in conveying the sorrow of these aptly named songs. Koch also provides better value for money with their inclusion of the very approachable Three Pieces in Old Style. … [‘Totus Tuus' is] a simple, fetching, unaccompanied motet, written for Pope John Paul's visit to Poland.” -GramophoneTracksSymphony No. 3, Op. 36 “Symphony of Sorrowful Songs” I. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 9, 2023 is: thwart THWORT verb Thwart means “to effectively oppose or prevent.” To thwart a person is to prevent them from doing something, and to thwart a thing is to stop it from happening. // The campaign has successfully thwarted the effort to develop the land, which is now preserved in perpetuity. // The hometown crowd erupted in cheers as their beloved team thwarted the postseason hopes of their archrivals. See the entry > Examples: “In the 1990s, the beer company Old Style aired a series of ads starring Dennis Farina, the Chicago-born actor who's been typecast for most of his career as a cop. In them, Farina plays the role of a detective tasked with thwarting out-of-towners, specifically from New York and Los Angeles, from loading cans of Old Style into vans to take back to home. ‘The Old Style Light you drink is one they'll never get,' he says in the ad. ‘It's our great beer, and they can't have it.'” — Luke Fortney, Eater.com, 17 Feb. 2023 Did you know? Try to compile a long list of words in English that begin with “thw,” and prepare to be thwarted in your attempt: there aren't many, and a goodly portion of those that do exist, such as thwartwise and the now-obsolete thwartsaw, start with thwart itself. Today we mostly use thwart as a verb to mean “to defeat or oppose successfully” but a lesser-known meaning of the word is “to pass through or across.” And it's that sense that points to the origin of this odd-sounding word. In early Middle English, thwert was an adverb meaning “across” or “transversely,” used to describe how something lies across the length of something else. The verb thwerten came from this adverb and eventually became thwart. The link between the meanings becomes clear if you think of thwarting a plan, effort, etc., as blocking a road or path, thereby impeding another's progress. And if you're at cross-purposes with someone, you two are mutually—even if unintentionally—thwarting each other's plans.
In 2010, a photographer named Reuben Cox moved to Los Angeles to start Old Style Guitar Shop. In the years since, the instruments that he continues to repair and sell have come to define the sound of the LA indie folk scene among artists like Blake Mills, Andrew Bird, Madison Cunningham, Ethan Gruska and Phoebe Bridgers. Reuben's guitars are Frankenstein-esque creations, cobbled together from spare parts and neglected guitar bodies found in flea markets and estate sales. The sounds that these make, though, are as eccentric as their source: the strings are laid on top of Reuben's signature, a rubber bridge. This sound, and the mythos of the rubber bridge guitar, has turned Reuben into a local celebrity and put Old Style at the center of Los Angeles's indie music scene. In this episode of Switched on Pop, host Charlie Harding explores that sound and the man behind it all.
