The Soldiers Monument, a 150-year-old anchor of the Santa Fe Plaza, is mostly gone. On Oct. 12, Indigenous Peoples Day, dozens of people pulled on a tow strap and a chain tied around the monument and pulled it down in two pieces. All that’s left is the base, which is now boarded up and awaiting whatever comes next. The monument, known more commonly here in Santa Fe, New Mexico, as “the obelisk,” has ignited fights over what it truly means for decades, and multiple mayors in recent years have promised to consider removing the statue from the plaza. Basically, it’s dedicated to Union soldiers who fought in the southwest—defending it from Confederate armies. But it is also dedicated to these same Union soldiers who slaughtered the regional Indigenous peoples in the so called “indian wars”. So, yeah, it’s complicated. Finally, what maybe was a long time coming, came. Protesters pulled the obelisk down and so much has happened between Oct. 12 and now, Nov. 18, . The city seems divided into factions—some people believe pulling it down was the right thing to do. Others really don’t. This week’s Santa Fe Reporter cover story looks in-depth at what’s happening now to move on; the police response then, versus now; what another city did with a similar problem and more.This is Episode 1 of Season 4 of Reported, the Santa Fe Reporter’s podcast. We’re glad to be back after a lengthy break, bringing you all sorts of news you can use and compelling New Mexico stories for your ears. Music: Lone Pinon All of our coverage about the toppling of the obelisk: https://www.sfreporter.com/tag/plaza/

It seems like Almost Yesterday that Richard G. Wilson became the only resident of Cape Girardeau to ever receive the Congressional Medal of Honor, our nation’s highest military honor. Wilson was born August 19, 1931, in Marion, Ill., but grew up in Cape Girardeau in a family of seven children. On August 19, 1948 – his 17th birthday – he enlisted in the army and reported to Fort Sam Houston, Texas, where he was trained as a medic. He volunteered for Airborne School and was assigned to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, as a medic in the 11th Airborne Division. When the Korean War began in June of 1950, Wilson’s unit was informed they would soon be moving in that direction. He received a final weekend home – over the Fourth of July – returned to Fort Campbell and was soon in Korea. On Oct. 20, 1950, Private Wilson participated in one of the largest airdrops in American military history. He was part of the 187th Regimental Combat Team which was dropped behind enemy lines, north of Pyongyang, to cut

On Oct. 15, 2020, Fr. John MacQuarrie gave this homily at the Feast Day Mass of St. Teresa of Avila. What is piercing your heart? Is it the anger and confusion of our times in this world, in the church, in politics? Or is it the flaming arrow of God’s love? Fr. John MacQuarrie leads us in a reflection on this feast day of St. Teresa of Avila by recalling the great statue by Bernini of St. Teresa in ecstasy. The description of this supernatural event involving St. Teresa can be found in “The Book of Her Life” Ch. 29 verse 13. Regarding the times we are living in, she has great advice: “Whoever lives in the presence of so good a friend and excellent a leader, who went ahead of us to be the first to suffer, can endure all things. The Lord helps us, strengthens us, and never fails; He is a true friend.” [Life, Ch. 22:7].
On Oct 22nd 2019 2 brothers and a sister recorded a podcast about Boy Meets World. From that old friendships were rekindled, new friendship started, celebrities interviewed, new shows discovered and maybe we even got a few Stans (we didn't... but we can dream). Thank you for joining us for the adventure that was Year One and we have no signs of slowing down. Here's some of our fondest memories of our first year. On Oct. 13, 2016, weeks before scoring one of the biggest political upsets in U.S. history, Donald J. Trump delivered a "closing argument" speech before an enthusiastic crowd in West Palm Beach, Fla. The Republican nominee pledged that, if elected, he would work to "remove from our politics the special interests who have betrayed our workers, our borders, our freedoms, and our sovereign rights as a nation." He also decried what he called a "campaign of destruction" being waged by his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton, and he took aim The New York Times and other "media enablers" who "[do] not even attempt to confirm the most basic facts." "Join me in taking back our country," he urged voters. "We will make America great again." On Election Day, Donald Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States, winning 30 states and earning 306 electoral votes. This speech has been abridged slightly for this podcast. On Oct. 8, 2020, after 4½ months on hiatus, Glenn Campbell returns with a new podcast, recapping what has happened both in the world and in his personal life. While there has been plenty of "news" over the past four months, not a lot has changed in the big picture. The pandemic is almost certain to accelerate the birth collapse in developed countries, which will be confirmed by birth statistics in December. While the long-term prospects haven't changed, Glenn is surprised by three "insanities" he wasn't anticipating: (1) The dramatic rise in stock markets despite a crumbling economy. (2) A labor shortage despite massive unemployment, and (3) Reversing of the long-term trend toward unbanization, at least in the biggest cities. Glenn says the true crash has hardly begun. He predicts another Black Swan will be needed to make people take the first Black Swan seriously. — Website: DemographicDoom.com — Twitter: @DemographicDoom — See the video version of this episode for notes, comments, corrections & links to other resources: j.mp/dd_winkle [ep 45, 8 Oct 2020]

On Oct. 4, 1957, Russia shocked the U.S. by launching the world’s first artificial satellite into orbit. Now, as COVID-19 shocks the world again, Regina Dugan says we could be entering a new era marked by big breakthroughs in medical science. Dugan, former director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and CEO of Wellcome Leap, says this Health Age could lower research costs, speed up clinical trials and improve mental health treatments — and bring us a coronavirus vaccine along the way. The first step in all of this? Capturing the nation’s imagination to go beyond what we think possible.

For this episode, I spoke to Christina Kramer, about her daughter Angela “Angie” Barlow. Angie was Christina’s oldest daughter. To make ends meet, Angie was a dancer. Before her disappearance, she had received a request to do a private party. Originally, Angie was hesitant and felt uncomfortable about it. But after returning home from a trip, she needed the money and decided to do the party. However, she left a final text to her best friend that simply said, “Doing a private party at this address just in case I go missing lol.”On Oct. 27, 2016, after working the private party, Angie never made it home. Eventually, the Indianapolis Police Department received a tip that led them to Angie’s body. On June 20, 2017 the Indianapolis police department recovered Angie’s buried body at the 5300 block of East 43rd. Someone had murdered and attempted to hide Angie’s body. On Oct. 16, 2019, the U.S. Supreme Court heard argument in Kansas v. Garcia, a case involving a dispute over whether the federal Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) precludes states from using any information contained in a federal Form I-9, (which includes common information such as name, date of birth, and social security number) to prosecute the person with a state crime.Respondents Ramiro Garcia, Donaldo Morales, and Guadalupe Ochoa-Lara were convicted of identity theft (and/or making a false information) by the state of Kansas, for using social security numbers that were not theirs on federally required employment or housing-related paperwork. Respondents argued that their convictions were invalid on the grounds that IRCA preempts the use of such information in a state prosecution. The Kansas Supreme Court agreed and reversed the convictions, holding that IRCA expressly preempted state prosecutions that use information contained in a federal I-9 form. That decision conflicted with those of various other state supreme courts and federal circuit courts of appeals, however, and the U.S. Supreme Court subsequently granted Kansas’s certiorari petition to address whether IRCA impliedly preempts Kansas’ prosecution of respondents.To discuss the cases, we have Jonathan Urick senior counsel for litigation at the U.S. Chamber Litigation Center.As always, the Federalist Society takes no particular legal or public policy positions. On Oct. 29, artist Paul Chan delivered the 2019-20 Una's Lecture, a series sponsored by the Townsend Center for the Humanities since 1987. In his talk, called the "Bather's Dilemma," Chan explores the figure of the bather — a visual trope with a rich history, and a prominent theme in his own work — as an embodiment of pleasure that is linked to the act of renewal."The bather in art history has a long and storied pedigree," says Chan. "What I was interested in was how this motif inspired a few artists to experiment with new ways to depict a human form that took into account movement in different ways."Thinking about bathers touched a nerve that was sensitive to a need I didn't realize was in me," he continues. "I needed some way to think about whether pleasure has a place in these punishing times and whether our capacity for pleasing and being pleased has any bearing on how we renew ourselves to better meet what genuine appeals of progress asks of us."Chan is the winner of the 2014 Hugo Boss Prize, awarded by the Guggenheim Foundation to an artist who has made a visionary contribution to contemporary art. His art is held in numerous permanent collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago.Listen and read the transcript on Berkeley News. Op9 is excited to introduce you to Dr. Haghighat and let her share her incredible story.
For more than thirty years, retired U.S. Army officer Ed Wilson and his wife Dolly have been active in the American military Catholic community at Stuttgart, Germany. Among other volunteer activities, they have organized travel for military Catholics to the annual Pèlerinage Militaire International, or International Military Pilgrimage, in Lourdes, France, where the Americans join military members from other nations in prayer and fellowship. On Oct. 26, the Wilsons were invested in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, the successor of a Crusades-era military force now engaged primarily in charitable activities in the Holy Land. In this edition of Catholic Military Life, the only official podcast of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, the Wilsons reflect on their service to the Chruch and how their life in Germany has given them a front-row seat on the eventful history of the past three decades in Europe.

On Oct 30th, 1938, radio listeners got a special Halloween gift from a man who would become one of the greatest film-makers ever, Orson Welles. An adaptation H.G. Wells' 'War of the Worlds' aired -- and people were panicked! Just what you want on Halloween, right? I guess it depends on who you ask. It's a must-listen radio program. Grown Ass Men decided to revisit that historic radio program with Welles expert and friend of the show Jeff Ward. Jeff is a playwright, composer and actor and let's just say he's very knowledgable on this topic. We also revisit the Marvel Comics War of the Worlds starring the rather mundane Killraven. Check it out! Original Music by Adam Bernstein.
In this special edition of Clear And Present Danger we leave the past and jump into the present for a discussion on how international human rights standards are relevant to the burning question of where to draw the limits of free speech online". With me to discuss this issue is Professor David Kaye, who is the UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, as well as a professor of law at the University of California, Irvine. Professor Kaye is also the author of the recent book “Speech Police”. On Oct. 21, David Kaye presented a report to the UN General Assembly that attempts to provide guidance to both states and tech companies on how to safeguard online free expression while minimizing harms. The conversation delves into questions such as: What is the state of free speech today; Why a historical perspective is crucial to understanding current challenges to free expression; How to reconcile the “schizophrenic” standards on free expression and hate speech under human rights law; How the UN human rights system has developed standards that are more speech protective than the European human rights system; Why the so-called digital era has resulted in more rather than fewer restrictions on free speech globally; Whether tech companies should base their community standards on human rights principles; Whether attempts by European democracies like Germany and France to limit online hate speech creates a risk of “moderation without representation” for users of social media platforms in the US and elsewhere; How to assess Mark Zuckerberg´s recent speech on free expression at Georgetown University;
