We said it last week, but this time it really does feel like the hottest day of the year… joining us for lunch is the gorgeous actress Suranne Jones! Star of Doctor Foster, Vigil, Gentleman Jack, and a Coronation Street icon, and this week we caught up to talk about her new TV project, ‘Hostage'. We heard about growing up in Chadderton (and how mum used to go horse riding there!), how she met her husband at a wedding, filming Vigil during Covid lockdowns, setting up her own production company, admitting she isn't the best cook and we even hear about her love of witches - and the Channel 4 documentary she made about them! This episode has been a very long time coming, Suranne, you were totally worth the wait as you are a total delight! Suranne's new series Hostage launches on Netflix on the 21st August. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

There is an experience some of us (but not all) are able to have called autonomous sensory meridian response or ASMR. It can be triggered by a soft monotonous voice explaining something as well as other triggers. Sounds weird, right? Just last week, PM Benjamin Netanyahu spent three very full days in Washington DC conferring with President Trump and overseeing his most senior advisers get down to brass tacks with their US counterparts. The expectation – fed by repeated statements made by the President – was that a deal to end the war with Hamas and free the remaining hostages was close. So close. The families of those in captivity dared to allow themselves to feel hopeful. Until the PM returned to Israel. And suddenly, there was yet another impassable breach. This time? Israel cannot agree to withdraw from the Gaza Strip on the terms acceptable to Hamas. Each side blames the other. And at this point, Israelis are so worn out they don't care. More than 75% of Israelis want this war to end now. More than 60% of voters who supported the government coalition want this war to end now. And they all want every last hostage returned to Israel. Now. Not tomorrow. Or the day after. Now. And PM Netanyahu seems impervious to this very grim and determined national mood. Morale has nosedived in recent days and State of Tel Aviv and Beyond's superb military and political analyst, Ya'akov Katz, joins me today to untangle this mess.State of Tel Aviv is a reader-supported publication. This week on Shoot the Hostage, Sarah's taking it all the way back to grim-town as we confront Gaspar Noé's Climax (2018). We've arrived at the fourth film in Sarah's season dedicated to movies about drugs. She explains why Climax took the fourth spot instead of the final one, which you would think, given the title, would be the natural placement. We also draw connections between Climax's disorienting visuals and unsettling atmosphere to other controversial films seen on the characters' interview tapes, such as Suspiria and Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom. The influence of Andre Żuławski's Possession on Sofia Boutella's intense performance is also discussed. Here's what you can anticipate from this episode: Why this incredibly grim movie takes the fourth spot in Sarah's season lineup instead of the final one. Contrasting viewing experiences: Sarah's multiple, cathartic watches versus Dan's two "draining" encounters. Exploration of how Noé creates a disturbing portrayal of hedonism gone horribly wrong. Discussions on how the use of actual dancers and on-set improvisation contributes to the film's unique realism A hypothetical and highly intellectual discission on who would win in a fight between 1 million monkeys and Nigel Farage Season 11 runs until August 11th with 8 episodes Would you like to see the full lineup for season 11? Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. US bureau chief Jacob Magid joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. According to a Channel 12 Israeli television report, later today, Israel will present new maps for the IDF’s redeployment in the event of a ceasefire-hostage release deal along the Morag Corridor and perimeter around Gaza after Hamas rejected its previous offer. Magid updates us on the status of the Doha talks and speaks about the blame game from both sides. We hear about how the Trump administration is playing the "Witkoff card" -- or when US envoy to the Mideast Steve Witkoff will finally join the talks and what it will signify when he does. We turn to the results of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's trip to Washington, DC, even as he comes home without any overt deals. What else was on the table for the trip and what was accomplished? Over the past day, security forces arrested six people in connection with an incident in the West Bank yesterday, where settlers allegedly killed two Palestinians on Friday. US citizen Saif al-Din Kamil Abdul Karim Musalat was allegedly beaten to death in Sinjil, a village north of Ramallah, the Palestinian Authority health ministry said. A second man, Mohammed Rizq Hussein al-Shalabi, 23, died after being shot during the attack, according to the Palestinian Authority health ministry. Magid describes what we know about this incident and weighs in on whether any rigorous investigation will be launched. Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing liveblog for more updates. Welcome to The Times of Israel's newest podcast series, Friday Focus. This Friday, join former hostage Keith Siegel and host Jessica Steinberg for a deep dive into what life is like for Siegel, five months after his release home from captivity in Gaza. Siegel discusses his need to do everything he can for the remaining hostages, including those with whom he was held hostage during periods of his 484 days of captivity, and who are still held captive. He speaks about the depraved terror he experienced and witnessed in captivity, the moments of grace, and his hope and optimism that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to the White House will possibly bring the war to an end. America maintains a promise to its citizens. A promise to never leave them behind and stop at nothing to return them to American soil. Over 200 Americans are wrongfully detained or taken hostage each year across the globe. The Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs is responsible for bringing them home. Ambassador Roger Carstens served as the SPEHA from 2020-2025. A West Point Graduate, Green Beret, Army Ranger, and seasoned security leader, Roger and his team brought home close to 70 Americans during his tenure; including high profile cases such as WNBA star Brittney Griner and Wall Street Journal Reporter Evan Gerskovich. Roger joined Fran Racioppi from the McCain Institute in Washington, DC for a conversation on the role of the SPEHA, why countries take Americans for leverage, and just how America negotiates with terrorists. We explore the effects of wrongful detention and hostage taking on America's national power, how families are turned completely upside down, and why only a Warrior Diplomat has the character required to make deals with America's adversaries.Roger and Fran also share the mission of Hostage US; a non-profit instrumental in supporting hostages and wrongful detainees - and their families - through captivity, return and reintegration. Surrender, resilience, purpose, the lessons I learned interviewing Eliya Cohen a 505 days hostage Survivor
Israel, it seems, is once again on the brink of a cease-fire deal with Hamas – one that would see hostilities halted for at least two months, and an exchange of Palestinian prisoners for Israeli hostages. But as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump talk particulars in Washington, the families of the 50 remaining hostages are far from relieved. The deal on the table would only bring home 10 of the living hostages, and the remains of 18 of the deceased – leaving the fate of the 22 others in question. Aviva Siegel was kidnapped on October 7 from Kibbutz Kfar Azza along with her husband, Keith. She was released after 51 days, and campaigned tirelessly for Keith's release. After he came home in February, the reunited couple have fought for the return of the remaining hostages in Gaza. Siegel joins Haaretz reporter Linda Dayan to talk about this deal, captivity, adjusting to freedom and the urgency of bringing every hostage home. "Nobody's really talking about what's going to happen after the 10 [living hostages] come home, and half the hostages that aren't alive," Siegel says. "I've asked important people if they can answer that, because it's a question that I think about all the time, and I'm very, very worried." On what may be the eve of a historic decision, she says that she would tell decision-makers – at home and abroad – her own story, and ask them how they can abandon the hostages who remain there, like 27-year-old twin brothers Gali and Ziv Berman. "I was there for the 51 days. I felt that I was left behind," she recounted. "And there were so many moments that I lost hope and I just wanted to die. What I saw in Gaza and what I felt was so much for a human being to go through. I just wanted to die. So I want the leaders to understand that they have to take responsibility – I'm just an ordinary person, and I just want my life back." On June 13, 2025, Israel initiated “Operation Rising Lion,” attacking Iran's ballistic missiles installations, eliminating a significant number of Iran's elite military leadership and nuclear scientists. Then on June 21, 2025, the United States unleashed “Operation Midnight Hammer” and attacked Iran's nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. Now that the dust has settled, what are the key takeaways from these military operations? In a conversation with SBS Hebrew, Professor David Menashri emphasises the urgent need for an immediate end to the Gaza conflict, highlighting the suffering on both sides and the critical importance of compromise over entrenched positions. He also reflects on Iran's complex internal dynamics and its influence in the region, expressing hope that an eventual normalisation with Israel could unlock significant mutual benefits.

Prime Minister Netanyahu told the press that Israel and the U.S. were communicating with several countries willing to take in Palestinians who want to leave the Gaza strip, suggesting that Gazans would not be forcibly removed from the strip, but rather given the option to relocate if they so choose.President Trump disclosed that the U.S. was engaging in direct talks with Iran, with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff saying a meeting with the Iranians would take place within a week. Notably, there was no big announcement on the hostage-ceasefire front, which many people were anxiously awaiting after more than a week of Trump expressing optimism regarding a deal.To unpack what we learned from Monday's White House meeting – what might develop over the days and weeks ahead – are Call me Back regulars, Senior Analyst at Yedioth Achronot Nadav Eyal and Chief Analyst at Channel 12 Amit Segal. I pray for peace. Nick Beake speaks to released Israeli hostage Keith Siegel about his experience of captivity in Gaza, of the suffering he says he witnessed at the hands of Hamas and the moment he was released. Mr. Siegel, an American-Israeli, was captured by Hamas fighters in the October 2023 attack that marked the start of the conflict in Gaza. He was one of 251 hostages taken that day, in an assault that killed around 1,200 other people who were mainly civilians. Mr Siegel was released in February after nearly 500 days. His mother passed away while he was still in captivity. You're going to hear his accounts about his time as a hostage. Some listeners may find his descriptions disturbing. He talks about desperate living conditions in Gaza, as well as extreme levels of violence to which he says he and other hostages were subjected. Hamas has said it doesn't abuse anyone in captivity. Mr. Siegel is calling for all 50 remaining hostages to be freed - up to 20 of them are still believed to be alive. Talks on a ceasefire proposal that would include a hostage release deal are ongoing between Israel and Hamas. The Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza in response to Hamas's 7 October 2023 attacks. More than 57,000 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Most were released in the November 2023 hostage deal, though her cousin's husband David Cunio and his brother, Ariel Cunio, remain held hostage in Gaza. Alana reflects on the personal toll of the past 21 months, the complex advocacy efforts she's undertaken across two U.S. administrations, the disconnect between hostage families and much of the American Jewish community, the urgent need to center the hostages' plight in policy debates, and more.Follow: @alanalindsay @bring.david.cunio.home @bring.ariel.homeSupport the efforts of The Hostages and Missing Families Forum here.Support the showFollow us on Instagram, Twitter/X, and Bluesky, and subscribe to our email list here.

On Friday May 17 2024 the Surprise Arizona Police department received a call that a suspect had broken into his ex-girlfriend's home and taken her and their 7-month-old child hostage. The suspect told her that he planned to kill her and the baby and eventually killed her dog. She eventually convinced the suspect to let her go outside and fled to local construction workers who called the Surprise police. When police arrived on scene, they found the suspect shooting out the front of the house into neighboring homes. The decision was made to conduct a high-risk entry to rescue the child. What ensued was a textbook hostage rescue by members of the Surprise SWAT team augmented by patrol officers who entered the home and rescued the child getting him to medical attention and saving his life. The team, having rescued the baby, then pulled out of the home leaving the suspect barricaded in a back bedroom. The suspect eventually lit the house on fire before committing suicide. My guests today are Officer Ryan Scott and Officer Travis Karpuleon from Surprise PD who were both part of the team that rescued the baby Resources: Critical Incident Debrief 5.17.2024 - YouTube

President Donald Trump has been advocating for an end to the war, saying that he believes a hostage-ceasefire deal might come within a week. This comes amid increasing doubts about IDF achievements in Gaza going forward, especially with IDF casualties on a near daily basis. This past Wednesday, seven Israeli soldiers were tragically killed when an IED hit the armored vehicle they were in. Joining us to discuss the ongoing IDF campaign in Gaza and the possibility for a new ceasefire deal — and the events taking place in the West Bank — is Call me Back regular and political analyst at Yedioth Achronot, Nadav Eyal.–CREDITS:ILAN BENATAR - Producer & EditorMARTIN HUERGO - Sound EditorMARIANGELES BURGOS - Additional EditingMAYA RACKOFF - Operations DirectorGABE SILVERSTEIN - ResearchYUVAL SEMO - Music Composer
In this episode of The Adam Carolla Show, comedian Jeff Leach joins Adam in studio to talk about his recent film Predator: Killer of Killers. They kick things off with a conversation about the film's success and some laughs over raunchy In-N-Out bumper stickers. Adam also shares his take on why people with more refined tastes steer clear of gas station food, and recalls a major ad offer from Mountain Dew that he accepted after a long stint of publicly hating the drink. They then react to an insane video of Whoopi Goldberg stating that it is just as bad living in America as it is in Iran. In the news, Jason “Mayhem” Miller unpacks some shocking headlines, including the reported $10 billion sale of the Los Angeles Lakers, a $1 million court payout to a California teen who endured a brutal bullying campaign, and a chilling update from Ireland where nearly 800 babies are believed to be buried in a former home for unwed mothers. They close the segment with a laugh over a Texas judge scolding a man for wearing a “World's Best Farter” T-shirt to court.Later, Ilay David calls in to share the heartbreaking story of his brother, who was taken hostage during the October 7th Nova Music Festival Massacre. He details the ongoing efforts to bring his brother home, the challenges involved, and how the Israel-Iran conflict—and shifting U.S. leadership—have impacted his family's situation.Get it on.FOR MORE WITH JEFF LEACH:INSTAGRAM & TWITTER: @jeffleachFACEBOOK: @jeffleachcomedianWEBSITE: jeffreyleach.com/FOR MORE WITH JASON “MAYHEM” MILLER: INSTAGRAM & TWITTER: @mayhemmillerWEBSITE: www.mayhemnow.com ILAY DAVID:VISIT: https://bringevyatarhome.com/Thank you for supporting our sponsors:BetOnlineHomes.comoreillyauto.com/ADAMPluto.tvSIMPLISAFE.COM/ADAMLIVE SHOWS: July 10 - Irvine, CA (Live Podcast)July 11-12 - Covina, CA (4 shows)See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
