Jose Ramos grew up the son of a cop, served in the military, and joined the NYPD to follow in his father's footsteps. In this episode of Locked In with Ian Bick, Jose breaks down how it all fell apart — from getting shot multiple times by a fellow officer he trained, to becoming corrupt, to spending 3 years in solitary confinement on Rikers Island before being sentenced to over 14 years in prison. He opens up about operating barbershops in his precinct, renting space to a drug dealer who eventually flipped and set him up, getting jammed up in the NYPD ticketing scandal, and the quota system nobody in the department wants to talk about. He also shares what it was really like surviving prison as a former cop — and how he found redemption on the other side. _____________________________________________ #NYPD #RikersIsland #policecorruption _____________________________________________ Thank you to INCOGNI for sponsoring this episode: Take back your personal data with Incogni! ABC News chief global affairs correspondent and co-anchor of This Week, Martha Raddatz, joins Donny to discuss her powerful new book, The Hero Next Door: Stories of Patriotism and Purpose — and why America's post-9/11 generation of veterans deserves to be called the next "Greatest Generation." From flying 10-hour combat missions in Afghanistan to embedding with troops in Iraq, Martha has spent decades on the front lines building deep relationships with the men and women who serve. In this conversation, she shares unforgettable stories from the book — including Marine Derek Herrera, who was paralyzed in battle and went on to revolutionize medical care for other wounded veterans; Kevin Schaefer and Steve Workman, who survived the Pentagon on 9/11; and Medal of Honor recipient Sal Giunta, whose quiet heroism brought a Korean War veteran to tears at Arlington Cemetery. Martha and Donny talk about: Why service members volunteer — and what drives them when they come home The hidden battle with PTSD after the war ends The devastating exit from Afghanistan and its toll on veterans How these heroes can unite a divided country Why Martha says knowing these people has made her a better journalist — and a better human being Whether you're a military family, a history buff, or simply someone hungry for stories of real American courage, this episode will restore your faith in humanity.

Some stories stay with you long after the mission ends. After 21 years in the United States Air Force, Derrick Jackson knows what it means to serve, sacrifice, and carry the emotional weight that comes with military life. From working as a jet engine specialist to becoming a Special Agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, Derrick's career took him across the world and into situations most people never see. This conversation dives into the discipline, pressure, and emotional cost of service. Derrick opens up about the guilt he carried as a father while being deployed, the weight of sitting across from people on the worst days of their lives, and the challenge of transitioning out of active duty into civilian life. He also shares how writing became an unexpected form of healing. Through his debut novel Shadow One, Derrick turned pieces of his military experience into fiction, creating a story that reflects the pressure, doubt, and humanity behind service. Derrick's journey is a powerful reminder that healing doesn't always happen by forgetting what you've been through. Sometimes, it begins when you finally give it a voice. Guest Bio Derrick Jackson is a retired U.S. Air Force veteran, former Special Agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, and fiction author. During his 21 years of service, Derrick first worked as a jet engine specialist on aircraft including the F-15 Eagle, C-5 Galaxy, C-141 Stratofortress, and C-17 Globemaster. After 10 years, he was recruited into the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, where he worked in criminal investigations, counterintelligence, protective services, and economic crimes. His assignments took him across the U.S. and overseas, including work supporting Air Force Special Operations Command missions worldwide. In 2014, Derrick retired from the Air Force after more than two decades of service. He is now a fiction author and released his debut novel, Shadow One, as part of the Shadow One series in 2024. You'll hear About Why Derrick joined the Air Force after making a life-changing decision in seconds How military discipline shaped his growth and leadership The emotional cost of serving as a special agent How guilt affected him as a father during deployments Why talking, faith, family, and support helped him release pressure How writing became an unexpected form of therapy after military service Chapters 00:00 Welcome and Episode Introduction 01:15 Meet Derrick Jackson 02:15 Why He Joined the Air Force 04:15 Starting at the Bottom and Learning Discipline 08:00 Climbing the Military Ladder 10:00 Why Your Environment Matters 14:15 The Emotional Cost of Military Service 15:00 Carrying Guilt as a Father 19:00 The Weight of Being a Special Agent 22:30 Finding Support Through Coworkers, Faith, and Family 26:00 How Writing Became Therapy 29:00 Transitioning Out of Active Duty 34:45 The Story Behind the Shadow One Series 40:45 Derrick's Message for Anyone Carrying Heavy Weight 43:15 Final Reflections and Key Takeaways Chuck's Challenge This week, take one honest step toward releasing something you have been carrying. Maybe it is guilt. Maybe it is stress from your work. Maybe it is a memory you have tried to push down. Maybe it is a weight you convinced yourself you had to carry alone. Find one safe way to let some of it out. Talk to someone you trust. Write it down. Pray about it. Sit with yourself and admit what is really going on. Because as Derrick shared, healing does not happen by burying the weight. It begins when you are willing to recognize it, give it language, and take one step toward support. Email: bidemiologunde@gmail.comIn this episode, host Bidemi Ologunde speaks with Chanda Coston, founder of Chanda Co., a U.S. Navy veteran, business strategist, coach, and Personal PMP/Success Strategist who helps women entrepreneurs in the "third quarter of life" turn their experience into income, build businesses that fit their current season, and move from scattered effort to structured execution without burnout. The conversation follows Chanda's timeline from military service to corporate strategy, consulting, entrepreneurship, and coaching: What does reinvention really require after 40? How can women choose the right business model for the life they are actually living now? Where can technology, automation, and project-management systems create clarity, and where do they quietly fuel overwhelm? Chanda shares practical lessons on confidence, focus, execution, and building a business that supports life instead of consuming it.

Leadership is often viewed through the lens of decisiveness. Direct orders and quick thinking. But the most impactful modern leaders are those who prioritize collaboration, and remain present in their leadership roles.I've been thinking about the future, and today's junior Marines are different: researchers, thinkers, and seekers of authenticity. They aren't afraid to ask the hard questions. In this candid conversation, Sergeant Major Carlos Ruiz and I explore why leaders must shift from issuing orders to showing genuine interest and investing in an individual Marine's life through the "one Marine" theory: how a single individual can turn an entire battalion around.Whether discussing the evolution of "field day" or the weight of addressing mental health and fitness, Carlos emphasizes that the Marine Corps is a tribe that must constantly be taught its ethics, its culture, and its worth. We talked about executive presence, senior enlisted slating, and the "Message to Garcia" mindset. Today's leadership has a mandate to ensure every Marine whether staying in or transitioning out is prepared for the life that follows their service. Women have worn the uniform in every branch, every conflict, every role from support to combat. So why do so many of us become invisible the moment we separate? In this episode of Sisters-in-Service, host [your name] digs into what happens when women veterans don't fit the stereotype of what a “real” veteran looks like. From being mistaken for a spouse in the VA waiting room to being skipped over on Veterans Day, women who served are still fighting to be seen and believed. In this conversation, we explore: * The sting of hearing, “You don't look like a veteran” * How women are erased from the public story of military service * The impact that invisibility has on identity, mental health, and accessing care * Why systems and services still treat male veterans as the default * Practical ways women veterans can claim space without doing all the emotional labor * What allies and organizations must do differently to truly include women who served If you've ever had your service questioned, minimized, or ignored, this episode is for you.

What if the worst diagnosis of your life became the greatest gift you've ever received? When Glenn Sturm got the call at an airport in 2009 telling him he had an aggressive, incurable form of T-cell lymphoma, everything should have stopped. Instead, something unexpected happened — his perspective shifted. Rather than letting cancer define him, Glenn made a decision: he would celebrate life every single day and make someone else's life better whenever he could. Seventeen years later, still undergoing treatment, Glenn isn't just surviving — he's living with purpose, gratitude, and a commitment to serving others. This conversation explores what it looks like to choose growth over fear, purpose over pain, and why sometimes the hardest moments in life can open the door to everything you were too busy to see before. Guest Bio Glenn Sturm is a 17-year cancer survivor, four-time bestselling author, and former attorney with over 30 years of military service. A University of Florida law graduate (honors, Order of the Coif), Glenn built a highly successful legal and business career before being diagnosed in 2009 with advanced T-cell lymphoma. Since then, he has undergone continuous treatment while reinventing his life around purpose, service, and creativity. He is the author of Cancer Set Me Free, an advocate for multidisciplinary cancer care, and an accomplished photographer whose work supports charitable causes. Glenn is known for his powerful message on resilience, perspective, and living life fully — no matter the circumstances. This podcast summary features the experiences of Graham Roberts, a former member of the Welsh Guards, whose service record and subsequent transition to civilian life offer a raw look at the realities of modern military duty.Military Service and TransitionGraham Paul Roberts served as a soldier in the Welsh Guards. His transition to civilian life was marked by extreme psychological distress, leading him to the brink of suicide. He recounts a harrowing moment where he planned to take his own life in the woods, only to be stopped by a sudden, overwhelming emotional breakdown that resulted in him seeking help instead. He eventually found support through North Wales Veterans and a dedicated medical team, which he credits with saving his life.Candor Regarding Service in KenyaRoberts speaks with significant candor about the trauma he carried from his deployments, specifically highlighting the moral and emotional toll of his time in Kenya.Environmental Trauma: He describes vivid, recurring nightmares involving the faces and bodies and events he witnessed or dealt with during his service. The Weight of Silence: He explains that for years, he "bottled up" the things he had seen, including the smuggling of goods and other "stuff" that he felt unable to discuss with his family or peers.Emotional Detachment: He admits to purposely detaching himself emotionally from his experiences to survive the scenarios he was placed in, a tactic that later contributed to his mental health struggles. The "Bravado" Myth: Roberts is critical of the military "bravado" that prevents soldiers from seeking help, noting that he initially refused medication and support because he wanted to handle it alone.Recovery and ReflectionTo process his trauma, Roberts turned to writing as a form of therapy. His book, "Echoes in the Silence," was written over several months as a way to "explore" the elements of his past that he had previously blocked out. He emphasizes that while medication (such as quetiapine and anti-depressants) helped stabilize him, the act of documenting his experiences was vital to his recovery.#WelshGuards #VeteranMentalHealth #PTSDAwareness #EchoesInTheSilence #MilitaryTransition #KenyaService #VeteransSupport Hosted on Acast. In this episode, Mining Minds had the opportunity to get back to our roots in a small mining town that's seeing new life through projects like North Bullfrog and Arthur with AngloGold Ashanti. While on site, we sat down with Nick Fouché, Senior Vice President of Nevada Projects for AngloGold Ashanti—an individual who cares just as much about production and the success of the town as he does about the people and the environmental impact. From growing up on the coast of South Africa to leading world-class mining projects across the globe, Nick shares a journey shaped by hard work, curiosity, and a willingness to step into the unknown. This episode goes far beyond a traditional career story. It dives into the evolution of mining through the lens of environmental responsibility, community engagement, and leadership. Nick walks us through his unconventional path—from environmental science and military service to building world class operations—and how those experiences shaped his approach to modern mining. We explore the importance of onboarding, culture, and collaboration, why understanding people is just as critical as understanding geology, and how global experience creates better leaders. Nick also gives us insight into AngloGold Ashanti's Nevada projects, a true tier-one opportunity, and how balancing production, environmental stewardship, and community trust is at the core of their vision. We'd like to thank AngloGold Ashanti for opening the door and giving us the opportunity to showcase their people and the work happening on this project. A civilian job can pay well and still leave a veteran feeling irritated and restless by the end of the day. Alan Brown breaks down the parts of military life that disappear first after retirement: the uniform, the PT, the daily contact with soldiers, and the built in group that understands the standard without a long explanation. He retired in January 2020 after 23 years in the Army, and he describes the mix of frustration and trial and error that followed while he searched for work that felt like it mattered. The conversation also gets practical. Alan explains how he uses writing as a focused way to slow down and sort out memories from active duty and the pressure of family life. He spent the summer of 2025 revising poems he wrote years earlier, then published a collection in September 2025 on Amazon titled When the Uniform No Longer Fits: Reflections on Military Service, Family, and Being a Veteran. Many of the poems are autobiographical and written for veterans, active duty service members, and family members who want a clearer view of what service leaves behind. Key moments are below. Some stories start as a plan. Others start as a punch to the chest. My guest's journey is both: she went from joining the military to earn the GI Bill, to teaching, to becoming a principal, and eventually building an alternate school in rural Texas for students who are behind on credits but still deserve a real path to a diploma. We talk about what's changed for kids over the last decade, why anxiety feels so much more common after COVID, and how flexible education can still hold high standards when it's built around real life circumstances. Then we go somewhere more personal. She explains the emotional origin of her first book, sparked by multiple losses to suicide and the insights found inside a young girl's diary. We sit with the hard question many parents and mentors carry: how can someone who seems “okay” be fighting a constant internal war? Her answer isn't a slogan, it's a story-driven attempt at understanding, written to help families feel less confused and more connected. We also shift into pure craft and curiosity: how a trip to Salem lit the match for her historical fiction witch series, why accurate history can act like an outline, and how research into herbal remedies and early medicine adds texture without turning the books into lectures. If you love creativity, discipline, storytelling, and the strange ways grief can become purpose, you'll take a lot from this conversation. Hello to you listening in Barking, East London, England! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. Sometimes in passing he would whisper: dit, dit, dit, dah dah dah, dit dit dit. Morse Code for SOS, Save Our Ship. I'm thinking of a skinny, 18 year old inner city kid hunched over a Morse Code machine in a radio room on a warship tapping out messages somewhere in the Pacific. During World War II US Navy warships used Morse code to speak to each other while they were out at sea. My dad was a radioman. As I watched a WWII era training film to learn more I could imagine dad's finger on that code sending device. Click HERE to watch a 1943 US Navy training film demonstrating sending Morse Code. Dad didn't talk much about serving as a US Navy radioman on a warship in the Pacific. Like so many stories our loved ones thought were inconsequential we end up cobbling them together from memory and archives. But I do know this: I chose to become a US Navy Nurse motivated by my dad who chose to go war with his brothers and their friends to defend our democracy because that's what you did then. You served your country. Story Prompt: Who or what motivated your career choices? Write that story and share it out loud! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, bring your friends and rellies, and join us! In the midst of ongoing global military conflicts, Ellsworth “Tony” Williams and General Jack Hammond join for a timely conversation about their military journeys and their life-giving efforts addressing the invisible wounds of military service. They share openly about their expected and unexpected paths into the military and into advocacy work. In this revealing discussion, we walk through the challenges of transitioning from military service to civilian life, and we acknowledge the ways these difficulties can unknowingly persist for years. Text a Message to the ShowThis is Part 2 of our interview with Dennis Kleyh, Jr. Part 1 was about defensive tactics and the differences in mindsets between veterans and the police recruits who have never been punched in the face. But in putting that episode together, I was left with an equal portion of the interview where Dennis talked about his careers in the Marine Corps and law enforcement. Military careers and law enforcement careers can seem pretty random. It's only the recruiters who have a clear idea of what your future will be like, your actual mileage may vary. But right here is some interesting wisdom, for good or ill, you don't know exactly where your military or police service may take you. So let's use Dennis' story to look at that.CORRECTION: After I finished the first episode I discovered that I made a mistake, Dennis said Fourth Recon and I said Force Recon, and over the internet, neither of us heard the difference. But I should have double checked, especially since it's clear as a bell now that I listen back to it. Sorry about that! Text a Message to the ShowHow would a defensive tactics class in the police academy be different for a combat veteran than for someone without that experience? Today's guest Dennis Kleyh. Sgt Major Kleyh spent 30 years with the Marine Corps and is now a police captain, with over twenty years of teaching defensive tactics in both settings. Today we talk about how the combat mindset is different than policing and why some people have trouble regaining control when the things get real. We talk about how to train people who have never been in a fight before and why we all might benefit if some people were just punched in the face.Music is by National Sweetheart and by Chris HaugenHey Chaplain Podcast Episode 135Tags:Police, Calm, Defensive Tactics, Discipline, EID, Instructors, Leadership, Marines, Military Service, Self-Control, Training, USMC, Use of Force, Veterans, Missouri, Afghanistan, IraqSupport the showThanks for Listening!
