This is the courtroom showdown years in the making: the 2012 trial of former Bolingbrook police sergeant Drew Peterson for the murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio against the backdrop of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, still missing.Prosecutors build a case without a single “smoking gun,” leaning on forensic testimony, a re-examined autopsy, and the statements Kathleen and Stacy allegedly made about fear, threats, and what Drew was capable of, evidence allowed under the statute that became publicly known as “Drew's Law.” After days of deliberation, the jury finds Peterson guilty of first-degree murder in September 2012, and he's later sentenced to 38 years. Appeals follow, but the conviction stands—including after the Illinois Supreme Court upholds it in 2017. Then comes another twist: a 2016 conviction for soliciting a murder-for-hire from prison—an alleged plot targeting prosecutor James Glasgow, adding 40 more years. And still, Stacy's case remains open.We appreciate our sponsors that made this episode possible!NMLS 182334, https://nmlsconsumeraccess.org APR for rates in the 5s start at 6.196% for well qualified borrowers. Tonight on Police Off The Cuff – Real Crime Stories, retired NYPD Sergeant Bill Cannon brings you the latest breaking updates in the Nancy Guthrie kidnapping investigation. New details continue to emerge surrounding the forced entry into her home, the blood evidence near the doorway, and the disturbing ransom note that points to a planned, targeted abduction of the 84-year-old mother of NBC's Savannah Guthrie. We'll separate verified facts from online rumors, including growing questions about individuals close to the family and unconfirmed reports involving son-in-law Tomasso Cioni and his wife. What is real evidence—and what is dangerous internet speculation? Bill explains how detectives evaluate motive, opportunity, and behavior while protecting the integrity of an active investigation. From a law-enforcement perspective, we'll break down:• What the crime scene tells investigators• How ransom cases are worked in real time• The role of DNA, phone forensics & surveillance• Behavioral profiling of offenders targeting the elderly• Why the first 48–72 hours are critical This livestream is about real police procedure, not sensational headlines—how cases like this are truly investigated and what the public should be paying attention to right now. February 7, 1999. Westminster, Colorado. 38-year old Paul Skiba, his nine-year old daughter Sarah Skiba, and 36-year old Lorenzo Chivers spend the day performing moving jobs for a company Paul owns before they all vanish without a trace. When the company's parking lot is searched, Paul's moving truck is found, but there is ample physical evidence, including blood and bullet holes, to indicate that foul play took place. The disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie has now become a full-scale criminal investigation—and the evidence left inside her home is chilling. Investigators report signs of forced entry, blood near the doorway, and a suspected ransom note, all pointing toward a violent abduction rather than a voluntary disappearance. Tonight on Police Off The Cuff, retired NYPD Sergeant Bill Cannon breaks down the latest developments from the Pima County Sheriff's Department—what the crime scene tells us, how ransom notes are analyzed, and why this case fits the profile of a targeted kidnapping. Why was Nancy's phone left behind? Who knew her routine? And was this crime planned by someone close to her? We examine the timeline, forensic evidence, neighborhood canvass, and the investigative tools being used right now—DNA testing, handwriting analysis, cell tower data, and surveillance footage. This episode focuses on facts, not rumors, and looks at the case through the lens of real police procedure. In March 1928, 9-year-old Walter Collins disappeared from Los Angeles after going to the movies. His single mother, Christine Collins, reported him missing, triggering a massive LAPD search amid the department's corruption scandal and recent criticism over the brutal Marion Parker murder. Five months later, the LAPD reunited Christine with an impostor boy from Illinois claiming to be Walter to salvage their reputation. Despite obvious physical differences and confirmation from others that he wasn't her son, Captain J.J. Jones coerced her into taking him home and, when she persisted with evidence, had her involuntarily committed to a psychiatric ward for about a week under "Code 12" to silence her. The boy soon confessed to being 12-year-old runaway Arthur Hutchins Jr., securing Christine's release and sparking public outrage. Meanwhile, the case linked to the Wineville Chicken Coop Murders: serial killer Gordon Stewart Northcott, aided by his mother and nephew Sanford Clark, abducted, abused, tortured, and murdered young boys on his farm. Evidence and confessions tied Walter to the victims—he was reportedly killed with an axe—though his body was never definitively found. Northcott was hanged in 1930; his mother received life. Christine sued successfully for false imprisonment (though payment was evaded) and helped inspire a 1931 law requiring due process for psychiatric commitments. She never accepted Walter's death, searching until her own in 1964. The story, dramatized in the 2008 film Changeling, exposes police corruption, institutional misogyny, and profound maternal grief. This month's Branch of Hope sponsored charity is: The Parents of Murdered Children. POMC provides ongoing emotional support, education, prevention, advocacy, and awareness for survivors of homicide victims, while working toward a world free of murder. It is the only national self-help organization specifically focused on the aftermath of murder. It emphasizes helping survivors reconstruct a "new life" after acute grief and dealing with the criminal justice system. Stacy Peterson's disappearance doesn't stand alone—because three years earlier, Drew Peterson's third wife, Kathleen Savio, was already sounding the alarm. In Part 2, Dr. Phil traces the relationship timeline: Stacy meets Drew at 17 while he's still married to Kathleen, and Kathleen's divorce filing alleges he was “having an affair with a minor,” followed by a temporary order of protection as she fears for her life. Then the calls start stacking up—eighteen domestic disturbance responses between 2002 and 2004—each one a missed opportunity to recognize escalation inside a home where the husband also knows the system. On March 1, 2004, Kathleen is found nude, face-down in an empty bathtub with visible injuries—yet her death is ruled an accidental drowning. When Stacy vanishes, investigators exhume Kathleen's body and a second autopsy changes everything: blunt-force trauma, signs consistent with drowning after injury, and a case that now looks like murder.Dr. Phil breaks down what this pattern suggests about control, narrative manipulation, and why some cases don't break until a second victim forces the system to look back.Thank you to our sponsors:Diabetes doesn't wait. On August 6, 1930, Supreme Court Justice Joseph Force Crater stepped into a taxi on West 45th Street and vanished without a trace. For 27 days, nobody reported him missing—not his wife waiting in Maine, not his Tammany Hall cronies, not the courts. When the story finally broke, it became the most famous missing persons case in New York history.Judge Crater was a rising star in the city's legal world—a Tammany Hall insider who'd just landed a prestigious judgeship paying $23,000 a year (about $450,000 today). But he was also tangled up in corruption, office-buying schemes, and shady real estate deals. He had a taste for Broadway chorus girls, speakeasies run by gangsters, and envelopes stuffed with cash. His disappearance rocked the city and captivated the nation for decades. The phrase “to pull a Crater” entered the popular lexicon. Psychics came forward with tips. Grand juries investigated. Deathbed confessions emerged decades later. This week, Tom takes you through one of the city's greatest unsolved mysteries—a story of Tammany corruption, Broadway nightlife, and Depression-era New York. What happened on that hot August night? Was it murder? Blackmail? A carefully planned escape?96 years later, the mystery endures. This episode was produced and edited by Kieran Gannon. In July 2001, the disappearance of British backpacker Peter Falconio on a remote stretch of Australia's Stuart Highway became one of the most high-profile missing person cases in modern criminal history. The case drew international attention, sparked an enormous police investigation across the Australian Outback, and would later result in a murder conviction - despite the fact that Peter's body has never been recovered. At the heart of the case is the survival of Peter's girlfriend, Joanne Lees, whose account of what happened that night has been scrutinised, challenged, and debated for more than two decades. From questions around forensic evidence and memory, to the treatment of victims and the role of public opinion, the Falconio case continues to divide opinion and raise uncomfortable questions about justice, truth, and how certainty is reached when key answers remain missing.Exclusive content:Patreon - Ad Free, Early Access, Exclusive EpisodesFollow the show:British Murders with Stuart BluesDisclaimer:The case discussed in this podcast episode is real and represents the worst day in many people's lives. There were no signs of violence, no clear reason for him to stop, and no trace of where he went next. What followed was not clarity, but silence. And with it, a question that still has no answer: how does someone simply vanish in plain sight? Crime Bit with Danelle Hallan returns for Part 2, we pick up after the initial search for Lily and Jack Sullivan and follow the case as investigators shift from ground sweeps to interviews, timelines, and evidence checks. We break down reported sightings, the questions around when the children were last seen, and why police asked the public for dashcam and doorbell footage. As tips pour in, the focus turns to the family's movements, the last confirmed locations, and what the search effort did and did not find in the surrounding woods. We also look at how online theories collide with a slow moving investigation that still has a community waiting for closure.
My guest for this episode is author and researcher Tony Wright, who joined me to talk about his recent book Things Aren't Right: The Disappearance of the Yuba County Five. The book explores the strange and tragic 1978 disappearance of five friends in the Plumas National Forest in Northern California; Ted Weiher, Jack Madruga, Bill Sterling, Jackie Huett, and Gary Mathias. Four of these men had intellectual disabilities while one was diagnosed with schizophrenia. On Friday, February 24, 1978, they left the Yuba County, California area in Madruga's 1969 Mercury Montego to attend a basketball game in Chico, California. Four days later the car they were traveling in was found abandoned on a snow-covered road in the mountains of the Plumas National Forest, some seventy-five miles in the wrong direction from home. Four jurisdictions of law enforcement would investigate and search for the missing men. Psychics were brought in, and there were strange reports of sightings of the five from numerous people. One witness came forward with an incredible story of seeing the men disappear into the forest that night. Yet every lead came to a dead end. About four months after they vanished, four of the five men's remains were found some twelve miles from the car, with one discovered in a US Forest Service trailer with plenty of food and fuel to keep them alive for months. Once described as ‘Bizarre as hell', the case of the Yuba County Five has baffled law enforcement and the families of the missing men for over forty-five years. Tony's meticulous research has rightly earned him the reputation of being one of the foremost authorities on the subject, and his conclusions are likely as close as anyone will come to making sense of what happened to Ted, Jack, Bill, Jackie and Gary. FAM...I KNOW WE SAY THIS A LOT, BUT THIS ONE IS WILLLLLLLD. In the early 1960, we don't know exactly when, George Carol went out for a pack of cigarettes and never came home. His four kids spent decades wondering what happened to him. Their mother, Dorothy, didn't like to talk about George and she didn't want to answer any of her children's questions about him. As adults, the kids decided to search. They were given a clue from an unlikely source. And so they started to dig--figuratively and literally. What they discovered leads to one of the most shocking conclusions we ever seen. Gird your loins, grab your dog or your cocktail, or nearest loved one (WITH CONSENT, PEOPLE!), because you are not going to believe what you are about to hear.
