Things Discussed: Dusty May's recruiting: A+. Grady should be Wisconsin-level hateable. Oscar Goodman has the most beautiful line in a shooter's scouting report: good not great athlete. These guys will be around 3-4 years Craig: Grady has some Roddy Gayle, can shoot a midrange. Have pole position in the recruitment of impact Trey McKenney, fighting UNLV and BYU for a center who does everything they want. Oakland Exhibition takes: The ball does not stick on this team. Three guys are point guards, and then Danny Wolf also sees the court. It got a little sloppy as they got to know each other. Roddy Gayle's defense stood out. Sam Walters stood out, role this year is going to be a JAS. Question: do they wear out their centers? If you want to play fast you're going to wear out your bigs, which is fine if you're going to play Wolf at the five for 15 minutes, but now you need a four. Think that will be matchup-based whether they roll with Walters or Tschetter or Jones in those situations. If someone gets in foul trouble they can weather it. Weird to see a guard foul out (Cason) and not be worried. Means they can play more aggressively. Defense was impressive. They did play drop, but being able to flat hedge is important, and having huge guards is going to feel very different. So many arms! Another takeaway: Wolf's rebounding is very underrated. Toledo preview: they're a five-out team with a 6-7 center so we'll get to see a different configuration against a different challenge than Kempe's big guards. Babalola: Good to see Sherrone Moore's recruiting is what we hoped it would be. Way more athletic than most guys we've had, reminds me of when the early internet sent around a video clip of Jake Long dunking. Illinois review: Offensive line was better, Gentry had a couple of pressures given up (PFF missed one) but he moved people and it's hard to understand why he wasn't playing over Link. Crippen it's more clear why they were trying Giudice because Crip tends to get bulled back. Wasn't terrible. Tuttle was—some of his mistakes weren't on him but he fumbled, had two HORRIBLE interceptions, can tell he hasn't practiced much this year. They found a major: split zone. Then they went away from it. When they play-action they get the reaction they want, but can't complete the pass. Game over. Who's QB: doesn't matter. Illinois had a good gameplan, but defense was good. Game was lost on offense, which is 94% the quarterback, so it's hard for us to break this down. Everybody can see this. Special teams is the other issue: Doman's punts are giving up 30 yards on the exchange. Everybody knew Illinois was going to fake near the 50 except this team. Defense: Got a better Wink. Starting to build blitzes around his players, and they're more effective. Michigan State: Michigan has better players, MSU has better coaching. They got Chiles to not turn the ball over against Iowa and suddenly they look good. Fancystat numbers are based on horrible interceptions; down to down they're a decent offense. Marsh is a dangerous WR, wish we had a healthy Will Johnson. MSU's OL is not good, especially on the right side.

Oscar Goodman, in January's Oscar's Dinner Series, remember Las Vegas' most famous lawman, Clark County Sheriff Ralph Lamb. Oscar says it was a working, respectful relationship - at least as he was concerned. The Sheriff? Not so much. Oscar recalls a successful challenge of the Sheriff's power to confiscate someone's casino work card with no recourse. But he also told the tale of a client who was banned from Vegas, with one exception: to visit The Venetian restaurant on West Sahara to enjoy Angie's Ruvo's famous neck bones. And, as usual, Oscar takes a few questions and gives the questioners a hard time. Hosts: Jonathan Jossel, Gary Vickery

Mary Patel-Gallagher, a Philadelphia native, has transitioned from being a political journalist to an independent filmmaker based in Las Vegas. In a recent podcast interview with Floyd Marshall Junior, she discussed her journey and the challenges she faced in the film industry. Patel-Gallagher shared insights into her career change, her documentary "Electile Dysfunction," and her first feature film "Holistay," which is now streaming on various platforms. From Political Reporter to Filmmaker Patel-Gallagher started her career as a political journalist, working as a columnist for the Philadelphia City Paper for 13 years. Her column, "Political Notebook," covered local, statewide, and national political issues. She also served as a correspondent for the Democratic and Republican presidential conventions and appeared on the ABC affiliate political talk show, "Inside Story." Her experience in politics led her to produce and direct the documentary "Electile Dysfunction," which examined the voting culture in the US. Transitioning to Filmmaking After the newspaper industry faced significant changes, Patel-Gallagher decided to pursue a career change and delve into feature filmmaking. She moved to Los Angeles in 2010 to immerse herself in the film industry. While in LA, she worked on various projects and developed a strong network of contacts. Patel-Gallagher gained experience in producing debates for Comcast and served on the board of the Philadelphia Film Festival. Creating "Electile Dysfunction" Patel-Gallagher's documentary, "Electile Dysfunction," focused on the American voter's apathy and lack of awareness about political candidates. The film used the backdrop of a major Senate race between Rick Santorum and Bob Casey as a template. Patel-Gallagher interviewed voters from different backgrounds, including a celebrity section that explored the impact of celebrities on political campaigns. The documentary premiered at the Philadelphia Film Festival in 2008 and later secured distribution with Cinema Libre. The Journey to "Holistay" After her success with "Electile Dysfunction," Patel-Gallagher shifted her focus to creating her own feature film. She spent several years working on her first feature, "Holistay," a thriller psychological horror film. The movie was shot in Las Vegas, where Patel-Gallagher currently resides. Overcoming the challenges of being an independent filmmaker, she managed to complete the film, which was eventually distributed by Breaking Glass Pictures. "Holistay" is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video, VOD, and Google Play. The Move to Las Vegas Patel-Gallagher's decision to move to Las Vegas was driven by lifestyle changes and a desire to escape the high costs associated with living in California. She found Las Vegas to be an affordable location for shooting her films. While the city may not be as established in the film industry as Los Angeles, Patel-Gallagher was able to assemble a crew and shoot her film, even utilizing her own house as a location. Las Vegas provided a new creative environment for Patel-Gallagher's filmmaking endeavors. The Future of Independent Filmmaking As an independent filmmaker, Patel-Gallagher acknowledged the challenges of navigating the industry dominated by corporate entities. While there are more platforms available for showcasing independent films, the competition remains fierce. Patel-Gallagher has plans for future projects, including sequels to "Holistay" and a film centered around the Jimmy Chagra Trial featuring former Las Vegas Mayor and Philadelphia Mob lawyer Oscar Goodman. You've heard from former reporters, members of law enforcement, mob family members, and experts. Some have referred to Oscar Goodman as a hero and others question some of his recollections. Now, Goodman gets the chance to respond as he hears from our guests for the first time.
The former mayor is back in the main dining room of his namesake steakhouse with more stories of his life. This talk was entitled "To Be or Not to Be." He's not talking about his time as king of Denmark, but rather the crossroads he's encountered and the choices he made. Among the first, and most important: asking Carolyn's father for permission to marry her. Other crossroads: being courted by a bookmaker in New York to move east, by a big law firm to return to Philadelphia and by the Teamsters to run a new Las Vegas casino.
After rising to prominence defending some of the biggest names in organized crime and trying more than 300 criminal cases over his career, Oscar Goodman makes a big change — from mob attorney to mayor of Las Vegas. His wife, current Las Vegas mayor Carolyn Goodman, also provides her take on being married to Goodman from the start of his career through the height of the mob era to today.
The public and private war between Oscar Goodman and the FBI heats up with the Phil Leonetti case. Goodman represented Leonetti in Philadelphia and received backlash for going back to his hometown to represent him. Former special attorney Stan Hunterton breaks down why witnesses in high-profile cases might change their tune in court in favor of the prosecution. Goodman discusses his courtroom strategy, which led to a high-profile public dispute between the mob defense attorney and the FBI.
Oscar Goodman's long list of clients includes names like Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal and Meyer Lansky. The third episode focuses on Oscar Goodman's relationships in and out of the courtroom with the crime associates. Goodman talks about the depiction of these men in the movie Casino and addresses some of the things the movie got wrong, including the portrayal of Rosenthal's wife and his infamous silk pajamas.

In the premiere episode, Oscar Goodman sets the stage for what has been described as the crime of the century. Oscar talks about how he landed in the middle of the Jimmy Chagra case in which Chagra allegedly paid Charles Harrelson $250K to murder Judge John Wood outside his home. This case put Oscar under the microscope and in turn, the spotlight on Las Vegas. The feds indicted Jimmy Chagra, Charles Harrelson, Joe Chagra, Liz Chagra, and Jo Ann Harrelson in the judge's murder. In a plea agreement, Joe Chagra got a 10-year sentence. Charles and Jo Ann Harrelson and Liz Chagra were convicted at trial. Liz got a 30-year sentence. Jo Ann got a 25-year sentence. Charles got double life sentences but due to an error in the renderings of the murder scene, Oscar was able to render witness testimony as not credible. Chagra was the only one who received a not guilty verdict to the murder charge and walked on that case but received an additional 10 year sentence in a drug case - a much lesser crime. With audio from The Mob Museum's Courtroom Conversations: The Life and Crimes of Jimmy Chagra, we will help tell this story as the made-for-movie moment it was in the courtroom. We will highlight the tie that actor Woody Harrelson has to the case through audio clips in the process of being cleared. We also hear from Jimmy Chagra's daughter, Catherine who reveals a never before heard excerpt from her mother's diary during the trial. Author, Jack Sheehan speaks on the prominence of the case and how Jimmy Chagra felt about Oscar Goodman and the time the two men reunited. We will explore how this case and the national attention primed Oscar to be known as the ultimate Mob lawyer and set up his successes in Las Vegas with another well-known name: Tony Spilotro. Tie in bits and pieces of his backstory - LV lawyer shaped by his father-in-law
Undoubtedly, one of the most colorful characters in the history of Las Vegas is Oscar Goodman. Oscar has been a part of the Vegas scene since the mid-60's when he moved to town to practice law and ended up with some of the most notorious organized crime figures on his client list including Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal & Tony "The Ant" Spilotro. Following his time as a defense attorney, he successfully ran for mayor, going on to serve three terms. He had a cameo - as himself - in the film, "Casino" starring Robert DeNiro & Joe Pesci. And, he even contemplated a run for Governor of Nevada. Now, in his mid-80's, he's the subject of a new podcast series. Season 3 of Mobbed Up - The Fight For Las Vegas focuses on the life & times of Oscar Goodman. Joining for for this episode, and making his second appearance on the podcast is John Katsilometes, columnist for the Las Vegas Review-Journal who's also serving as host for this season of Mobbed Up. John & I discussed what went into creating this season of Mobbed Up, how he convinced Oscar to be a part of the podcast, and how many hours he spent sitting with Oscar collecting his stories. Season 3 of Mobbed Up - The Fight For Las Vegas is available September 14th, 2023 on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and everywhere else you listen to podcasts. Be sure to follow John Katsilometes on X & Instagram and check out his column, Kats, at the Las Vegas Review-Journal. __________________________________________________________________________ Become a Jeff Does Vegas Insider today for only $5 USD/month & enjoy all kinds of cool perks like early access to new episodes, commercial-free versions of EVERY episode, invites to exclusive live streams & videos, insider-only virtual hangouts and even real-life in-person hangouts IN Las Vegas! Hizzoner is back! This time we've taken the greatest hits from Oscar's November Dinner Series talk and asked him to expand on the stories. The common theme of the random stories: how Oscar never dined with his clients (although his mother did). Also: defending the mayor of San Diego, and securing the release from jail of newspaper vending machines.
Forty years ago, Oscar Goodman went to court in what easily qualifies as one of the cases of the 20th Century, as Goodman defended a man accused in the second murder of a federal judge in U.S. history.

The song title from the legendary musical "South Pacific" was the theme of Oscar Goodman's last dinner series talk. He shared stories of the important women in his life, starting with his grandmother, wife and daughter. Then it's off to the races, as Oscar tells the tales of a sleepy judge, a con woman client and a brilliant prosecutor. And, Oscar being Oscar, he veers into a couple of other stories about "challenging" clients.
When the body-filled barrels showed up in the rapidly receding Lake Mead, the world's media immediately called Oscar Goodman for comment. And yes, he has a few comments - mostly about how there's no way that he would know who's in those barrels. Oscar, with a little prodding from Jonathan, spoke about it at his latest Oscar Dinner Series event. So come with us now to the dining room at Oscar's for everything but the rib eye!
Jeff Silver has experienced the Las Vegas casino business from both sides: as a member of the Nevada Gaming Control Board and as an executive at the Riviera, Landmark and Caesars Palace. Silver's time as a regulator happened during the Frank Rosenthal era, and Silver was the man who eventually put Lefty in the 'Black Book.' At the Riviera, Silver spearheaded several innovations, including one that's ubiquitous today: putting a fast food franchise on the property! Silver is also on the board of The Mob Museum. And, of course, he has stories about Oscar Goodman! Hosts: Jonathan Jossel, Lisa Melmed

Oscar Goodman was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. After completing high school, Goodman went on to receive his J.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. This eventually prompted a move to the Land of Milk & Honey - Las Vegas, Nevada. During his career as a defense attorney, he represented some of the top members accused of leading organized crime such as: Meyer Lansky, Nicky Scarfo, Herbert "Fat Herbie" Blitzstein, Phil Leonetti, former Stardust Casino boss Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal, and Jamiel "Jimmy" Chagra, a 1970s drug trafficker who was acquitted of ordering the murder of Federal Judge John H. Wood, Jr. One of his notorious clients was reputed Chicago mobster Anthony "Tony the Ant" Spilotro, who was known to have a short and violent temper. In the semi-factual 1995 movie Casino, the character of Nicky Santoro was based on Spilotro, and was portrayed by actor Joe Pesci. Goodman had a cameo appearance in the film as himself, where he was depicted defending “Ace Rothstein,” a character closely based on Lefty Rosenthal, and played by Robert De Niro. Eventually on June 8, 1999, Goodman was elected mayor of Las Vegas after he received 63.76% of the votes, while his opponent, then-Las Vegas City Councilman Arnie Adamsen, received 36.24% of the votes. In 2003, Goodman was re-elected for a second term, and defeated five opponents after he received 85.72% of the votes. On April 3, 2007, he was re-elected to a third and final term, with 83.69% of the votes when he once again defeated five opponents. Despite having been called Las Vegas' “most popular mayor,” the city has term limit laws that restrict mayors to a maximum of three terms. In 2011, Carolyn Goodman, wife of Oscar, was elected to succeed her husband as mayor after she earned 60% of the votes. We could just as easily call this "Governor Richard Bryan." Or "Attorney General Richard Bryan." He held all three jobs in his long, distinguished career. He was also Clark County's first Public Defender, working with a staff that for a while included another young attorney named Oscar Goodman. Bryan talks about growing up in downtown Las Vegas, being the son of a well-connected attorney, developing his own connections, and how the valley has grown over his 80+ years. Hosts: Jonathan Jossel, Lisa Melmed
Former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman joins us to talk about another body being found as Lake Mead's water levels are decreasing. We bring you the latest on the Senate report that showed LA Mayor Eric Garcetti “likely knew or should have known” that a former top adviser was allegedly sexually harassing city employees.
We're back with highlights from another talk by former Las Vegas Mayor, famous attorney and steakhouse namesake Oscar Goodman. Oscar reads from a logbook of Metro Police officers who were following him in the 1970s, and has some 'kind' words for a local politician seated at his table. But the centerpiece of this story involves Tony 'The Ant' Spilotro and a 'friend' he brought into Oscar's law office one day. You will be fascinated!

Vital Vegas blogger Scott Roeben is back as the podcast's first-ever THREE-TIME guest! And there is plenty to discuss. For one, Scott is not a fan of the statue of Oscar Goodman with Tony "The Ant" Spilotro, and he lets Jonathan know why. Jonathan smooths it over by taking Scott's advice on a new combo item for the bar (you'll have to listen to find out what it is). Jonathan also teases Scott about a new expansion project that's not been announced. And it all starts with Scott talking about a sudden video poker jackpot - two of them - just before we recorded. I first got interested in gambling as a kid growing up in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in the 1970s. Some of my earliest memories are of the classic hotels of the city being imploded to make way for modern casinos with hotel towers that had none of the charm of the original. Despite this early evidence of that, perhaps, history might not have the strongest hold over people, I decided to major in it as an undergrad, along with anthropology. When it came time to go to grad school, I chose history over anthropology, though I can't recall as I'm writing this exactly why I made that decision. In grad school I was preparing myself for a career as a college history professor when a small exercise called the dissertation stepped in my way. I would have to choose something to write a book-length historical study on, and it had to be something that would contribute in some way to the literature. That's when I remembered the questions I'd had about casinos as a kid: Why did they need to blow up those beautiful old buildings to build new ones that didn't look nearly as nice? If they just wanted to gamble, why didn't they just let people gamble wherever they wanted? With a few questions like that, I was on my way to writing a dissertation that got me researching casinos. From there, I haven't looked back, except for the year that I spent after I got my degree working in casino surveillance in Atlantic City's Trump Taj Mahal casino. I'd worked at the Taj earlier in security, and spending some time in surveillance gave me an appreciation for just how complex casinos are, and it kindled an interest in a whole other set of questions. Since arriving at UNLV back in 2001, I've been running the Center for Gaming Research, which has let me look at some very interesting areas of gambling and Las Vegas history. My website has a ton of info about my writing, professional, and creative work. So feel free to check it out at www.dgschwartz.com.Jay Sarno built two path-breaking Las Vegas casinos, Caesars Palace (1966) and Circus Circus (1968), and planned but did not build a third, the Grandissimo, which would have started the mega-resort era a decade before Steve Wynn built The Mirage. As mobsters and accountants battled for the soul of the last American frontier town, Las Vegas had endless possibilities--if you didn't mind high stakes and stiff odds. Sarno invented the modern Las Vegas casino, but he was part of a dying breed--a back-pocket entrepreneur who'd parlayed a jones for action and a few Teamster loans into a life as a Vegas casino owner. For all of his accomplishments, his empire didn't last. Sarno sold out of Caesars Palace shortly after it opened--partially to get away from the bookies and gangsters who'd taken over the casino--and he was forced to relinquish control of Circus Circus when the federal government indicted him on charges of offering the largest bribe in IRS history--a bribe he freely admitted paying, on the advice of his attorney, Oscar Goodman. Though he ultimately walked out of court a free man, he never got Circus back. And though he guessed the formula that would open up Las Vegas to millions in the 1990s with the design of the Grandissimo, but he wasn't able to secure the financing for the casino, and when he died in 1984, it remained only a frustrating dream. Sarno's casinos--and his ideas about how to build casinos--created the template for Las Vegas today. Before him, Las Vegas meant dealers in string ties and bland, functional architecture. He taught the city how to dress up its hotels in fantasy, putting toga dresses on cocktail waitresses and making sure that even the stationery carried through with the theme. He saw Las Vegas as a place where ordinary people could leave their ordinary lives and have extraordinary adventures. And that remains the template for Las Vegas today. Grandissimo is the story of how Jay Sarno won and lost his casino empire, inventing modern Las Vegas along the way.In Grandissimo, you'll learn Jay's fascinating story, and also plenty of things you never knew about Las Vegas, including:the true story about how Jimmy Hoffa's Teamsters Union first started funding Sarno projectshow Steve Wynn ended up answering the telephone in Hoffa's suite on the second day Caesars Palace was openhow Sarno, represented by Oscar Goodman, beat a seemingly-airtight case against him when he was accused of offering the largest bribe in IRS history to an undercover agent how Sarno's unbuilt Grandissimo became the template for the 1990s "mega-resort" era in Las VegasFrom start to finish, it's the story of the man who inspired modern Las Vegas.
Oscar Goodman, the former mayor of Las Vegas, is now the official spokesperson for the city, a director emeritus of The Mob Museum, and the namesake for the restaurant “Oscar’s Beef, Booze & Broads.” His wife is the current mayor of Las Vegas, serving until 2016. In Being Oscar, one of America’s most celebrated criminal defense attorneys recounts the stories and cases of his epic life. The Mafia’s go-to defender, he has tried an estimated 300 criminal cases, and won most of them,.His roster of clients reads like a history of organized crime:Meyer Lansky, Nicky Scarfo, and “Lefty” Rosenthal, as well as Mike Tyson and boxing promoter Don King, along with a midget, a dentist, and a federal judge. After thirty-five years as a defender, he ran for mayor of Las Vegas, and America’s greatest Mob lawyer became the mayor of its sexiest city.,He was so popular his image appeared on the $5, $25, and $100 chips.,While mayor of Vegas, he starred on the screen in,Rush Hour 2 and CSI. He is as large a character in the history of organized crime as any of his clients and as legendary a figure in the history of Las Vegas as the entrepreneurs (his friends and clients) who built the city. This is his astonishing story—the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
The following episode was recorded on May 11 at the mayoral forum that took place before a luncheon of Las Vegas' GLBT chamber of commerce and was moderated by me. First you will hear Carolyn Goodman, wife of current mayor Oscar Goodman, give opening remarks, followed by about a 25 minute discussion with me that included some questions of my own as well as those submitted from the audience. After Carolyn's turn, her opponent, County Commissioner, Chris Giunchigliani gave her opening remarks and sat for a 25-minute q-and-a with me as well. This audio was edited only to remove either dead air or several instances when the microphones squealed. As that resort turns 15 years old this month, it finds itself increasingly isolated north of the Strip right when new management has been spending millions to clean it up and modernize it. We'll hear in this episode from Frank Riolo, the CEO of the Stratosphere's parent company, American Casino and Entertainment Properties, about what's in store for the fifth tallest structure in America. Will there ever a casino at the top of the tower? Why did Steve Wynn scream Riolo? And what does Riolo wish he could ask the ghost of Bob Stupak? In Banter: Getting to the bottom of Oscar Goodman's drinking, looking at legalizing sports and mobile gambling, Expedia's new loyalty program and Steve & Amy's Liberace adventure.
Betty White may be getting all the headlines these days as America's elder stateswoman of comedy, but has she ever played Vegas? Another randy grandma, Cloris Leachman, hasn't either, but at 84 she makes her debut on Sept. 18 and 19 at the Suncoast. The Academy Award winner, who has also won more Emmys than any actor ever, spoke to Steve at length in advance of that one-woman show and brace yourself because some of this is almost as sexually explicit as that Tony Curtis chat we gave you a while back. There are many highlights, including Cloris sharing her experiences with Marlon Brando, Jackie Kennedy, Judy Garland, the Reagans and Kathryn Hepburn, although an instant classic is Cloris' hilarious re-enactment of a call from Joan Collins, who was having an affair with Cloris' husband George Englund in the 1970s. Leachman also discusses her new Fox sitcom, "Raising Hope."In Banter: Liberace's closure raises tough questions, Oscar Goodman faces wacky questions, the NY-NY's 9/11 Memorial is in questionable shape and more.Web: TheStripPodcast.ComEmail: TheStripPodcast@aol.comVoicemail: 702-997-3300Blog: VegasHappensHere.ComTwitter: @TheStripPodcast
