Lori Mihalich-Levin is the Founder and CEO of Mindful Return, a movement that helps new parents navigate the uncertain terrain of working parenthood. Currently, 92 employers offer the Mindful Return program to support employees in their transition to working parenthood. Additionally, Lori is the author of Back to Work After Baby: How to Plan and Navigate a Mindful Return from Maternity Leave and created the Mindful Return Maternity Leave E-Course. She also co-hosts the Parents At Work podcast and is a healthcare lawyer in private practice at her own firm, The GME Group, PLLC. Lori's thought leadership on issues related to working parenthood has been featured in publications including Forbes, The Washington Post, and New York Times Parenting. As a working parent of two boys, Lori understands the need for a supportive community of working parents — especially when you're first transitioning from parental leave. Her mission is to help parents feel empowered to make thoughtful choices and be present both with their babies and in their careers. In this episode… Working parents wear many hats and often struggle to find the support needed to thrive in both their personal life and professional career. After transitioning back to work after parental leave, numerous parents deal with the guilt of leaving their children, logistical challenges of finding childcare, and a lack of confidence that they can show up the way they used to at work. Can new parents find success in both areas of their life without sacrifice? When Lori Mihalich-Levin was a new mom transitioning back into her legal career, she found many resources focused on the baby but nothing about personal and professional identity transition. Desperate for help as a working parent, Lori created her own program, Mindful Return, which helps new parents gain support from other working parents and find the resources needed to grow in all areas of their life. But Mindful Return doesn't stop with the parents — Lori and her team are on a mission to help employers retain new parent talent and keep their employees' careers on an upward trajectory. In this episode of The Lawyer's Edge Podcast, Elise Holtzman sits down with Lori Mihalich-Levin, the Founder and CEO of Mindful Return, to talk about working parenthood and parental leave. Lori discusses the importance of destigmatizing parental leave for both men and women, how employers can help new parents navigate the transition, and how Mindful Return is helping both new and experienced parents succeed in their personal and professional life.

It's great that employers are starting to offer mental health care in their benefits packages for employees, but not enough are on board with supporting their families' mental health. One thing parents want more than anything is to know their kids are okay and are getting the help they need. Thankfully, the tide might be turning in this arena. This week on the podcast, Haleigh Tebben of U.S.-based Brightline is sharing about how her organization is supporting children and how that's making all the difference at work. The stigma around getting mental health support is going away, especially after COVID, but parents spend more time and money finding resources to help their children than they do for themselves. It feels like a no-brainer to take this off of parents' plates so they can focus on themselves, which ultimately benefits their organization too.About Haleigh Tebben:Haleigh Tebben is the Chief Commercial Officer of Brightline, the leader in technology-enabled pediatric behavioral health care. Rachael Waldinger and I have a conversation about how the needs of organizations and individuals working for them can be met. About how organizations can empower parents to take action and what leaders & managers can do to support working parents. Rachael shares with us her path from being a working mum to being a full-time mum and finding her way back to work. She describes how difficult the transition from home to work and vice versa can be. We speak about what it is that makes working parents “empowered”. And what empathy (versus sympathy) has to do with this all, i.e. listening and relating to what others have to say already makes a huge difference - not only among coworkers but also leaders. Another topic that came up is the differences between men and women when it comes to part-time work. The closing statement is that it is important to first connect on our similarities so that we can talk about what's different without having the need to defend the differences and taking sides - that gives us more choices to choose from. Rachael studied Human & Organizational Development in the US and led a variety of different teams in the Healthcare Technology industry. She has her Advanced Executive Coaching diploma from the Academy of Executive Coaching and works currently with leaders and companies around the globe. Today she is the COO/Head Coach at parents@work and also the mother of two wonderful boys. In her COO role, Rachael is dedicated to helping companies, mothers and fathers master the transition to working parent. ________________________________________ LINKS TO RACHAEL Website: https://www.parentsatwork.com; https://www.cambiumcoaching.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Parents-at-work-516210778763919 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/parents_at_work/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/parentsatwork/ ________________________________________ LINKS MENTIONED IN THE INTERVIEW Educated by Tara Westover: https://www.amazon.de/Educated-A-Memoir/dp/B078RVFGZY/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=educated&qid=1636104836&s=books&sprefix=educated%2Cstripbooks%2C110&sr=1-1 Ways to support this podcast: https://andrinatisi.com/episode-040/ ________________________________________ CONNECT WITH ME Website: www.andrinatisi.com Instagram: www.instagram.com/andrinatisi/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/andrinatisiLIFECURATION

Menopause is a normal life event for women (trans gender and non-binary people too), and yet we very rarely talk about it, even amongst our friends and particularly not in the workplace – but why? Given that women aged over 45 comprise 17% of the Australian workforce and menopause typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 – you would think that conversations about such a natural event would be common place. In this podcast, Parents At Work’s Customer Experience Director, Fiona Hitchiner, interviews Thea O’Connor to learn more about menopause, some of the signs and symptoms, what we can do to prepare for this phase of life, and even find joy in it. With all the events that have transpired this year, carers deserve recognition now more than ever. In this podcast, Emma Walsh, CEO of Parents At Work, interviews CEO of Carers Australia, Liz Callaghan, to discuss both the work of Carers Australia and National Carers Week. National Carers Week aims to recognise the 2.65 million unpaid carers in Australia and the work they provide for their loved ones. It aims to raise awareness of this crucial role and the incredibly impactful service they are providing for not only those they are caring for, but the community as a whole. Ultimately, Carers Australia wants to see unpaid care recognised as a shared responsibility between family, community businesses, and government especially as the role of unpaid carers seems to be invisible to many. The lack of recognition leads to insufficient support of carers, especially during this pandemic where this already isolating role has become even more distant from society and existing support networks shutting down. To put things into perspective, the replacement value of all unpaid care this year (prior to COVID-19) is nearly 78 billion dollars - that's nearly 1.5 billion dollars per week! This Carers Week we aim to raise awareness to create more carer friendly options within employment and the general community.

This is a critical issue as it’s having a first child when the gender pay gap starts to widen. Until recently it’s been approached as a ‘woman’ thing and they’ve been providing coaching support (practical, professional and psychological) for expectant and returning mums. Forward thinking organisations are now introducing more gender neutral parental polices and recognising this needs to looked at from the perspective of mums’, dads’ and managers’ and recognising to retain and engage parents requires aligning HR policies, D&I, L&D and communication. In Episode 2, Emma Walsh, CEO of Parents At Work and Catherine Brooks, Associate Director, Law Squared and Author of “Let’s Make it Work, Baby” will look at the emotional adjustment required when transitioning back and why it’s such a wonderful opportunity to reset what you want and go back with a new approach that’s going to work for you. We love including you in the conversation! As always, we invite you to send in your questions on this topic and we will do our best to answer them during the podcast.

Breaking the glass ceiling for dads – Jon Tindale’s Daddy Day Care experience on taking Extended Parental Leave What is it really like being a modern dad? Jon Tindale stayed at home with his newborn daughter and decided to write a book about it – Daddy Day Care – in the hope he could inspire other dads to take up the challenge (and joy) of the experience. But is it really more interesting than being air dropped into Kabul or climbing Kathmandu, as Jon intimated? “The bond that I nurtured and created spending that amount of time with my daughter – my sidekick – she just kind of became a part of me. . . it sounds a bit mushy but it sometimes feels like you’re falling in love everyday with this little person.” “It is absolutely relentless from dawn until dusk …. then through the night you’re constantly on . .. the cycle of it is extraordinary. How little time you have is a staggering surprise. The sleep deprivation – that’s the hardest thing.” “I was surprised. I really did expect to get my leg pulled mercilessly. But there were very, very few comments. Everyone knew this wasn’t going to be a walk in the park. None of the dads I knew had done [extended] parental leave but they’d done enough of parenting that they knew what was involved.” In his book Jon lays out an hour by hour basis what he experienced. He shares in this interview with Emma Walsh (CEO, Parents At Work) the highs and lows of his experience including singing his lullaby version of Purple Rain plus his revelation about slip-on shoes. He also shares how parental leave impacted his return to work and what it feels like to be an involved father.

A case study interview with Deloitte and PeopleCare for People Leaders, Diversity & HR Professionals In 2016, a landmark study found that the conflict of managing work and family life experienced by parents and carers is costing the Australian economy $23 billion a year. So how is business responding to this? According to WGEA an average of 15.7% of Australian employers have a strategy for supporting caring responsibilities1 with only 15% having a strategy for flexible working arrangements so the likelihood is that very few organisations are making a positive dent to improve the work life stress many employees experience when balancing a busy job with family. However, there are some progressive organisations determined to buck the trend – particularly when it comes to designing parental transition solutions to ensure both women and men can sustain their career and family life. In this special event we interview PeopleCare and Deloitte to hear more about their effective parental leave programs and how they’re making a difference. “The ‘new reality’ of family structures means that working parenthood is an 18-year job shared by both men and women, gay and straight, biological and adoptive. Aligning your organisation’s programmes to this reality … better targets the issue in its broad-spectrum reality, and it sends a more inclusive message.” Daisy Wademan Dowling, Harvard Business Review As more and more studies (and companies, by way of example) are revealing, it’s clear the benefits of working parent programs far outweigh the costs. It has been found that parental leave programs: improve the productivity and health of employees, reduce the cost of staff turnover, enhance the company’s reputation as an employer of choice, reduce legal risks and incidence of pregnancy discrimination, and increase the likelihood of women reaching leadership positions. These are just a few reasons why an increasing number of companies are choosing to support their working parents through the preparing for parental leave and returning to work transition. Join Emma Walsh, CEO, Parents At Work, as she interviews Maree Morgan-Monk, Head of People and Culture at People Care and Catherine McNair, National Diversity and Inclusion Manager at Deloitte about the parental leave programs they have put in place to support their working parents. The 1-hour podcast will cover: - What is a Parental Leave Program and why should your company have one? - What role do CEO’s, diversity professionals, people leaders and HR teams have in this process? - Where do you start in implementing a Parental Leave Program and what steps are involved in a full roll out? - What resources are required? - What are the challenges involved when introducing a Parental Leave Program? - Working examples from companies Peoplecare and Deloitte including the direct benefits they have experienced. This podcast is intended as a useful introduction for diversity professionals and HR practitioners to either start you on the way to creating a Parental Leave Program or improve how you may be currently supporting employees during their parental leave and return to work transition.

“It is indeed great news that, despite the challenges, in some ways it is more possible than ever before to have a great career and be a great dad.” - Scott Behson Most fathers today strive to be successful in their careers and to be loving, involved dads. However, the reality is, modern men are under immense pressure to be ‘the everything’ at work and at home. They are expected to be the diligent and dedicated employee, the icon of stability and strength, the financial provider, the easy going best mate, the fitness buff, the awesome chef, the helpful housecleaner, the nappy changer, the future planner, the dad that volunteers in the school canteen. Superdad syndrome is fast becoming a pressure – their compatriots – the Supermums have been feeling for many years. Managing career and family can sometimes seem like an impossible tug-of-war. But it doesn’t have to be. For this special event webinar Parents At Work CEO, Emma Walsh will interview Scott Behson, working parent advocate and author of The Working Dad’s Survival Guide: How to Succeed at Work and at Home. The Working Dad’s Survival Guide helps men understand they are not alone. During this special event Scott will: - Identify the unique challenges unique to working dads - Share how dads can feel more confident balancing both career and family life - Provide time and life management strategies that enable dads to succeed in their careers while also being a present, involved father - Give tips on reducing stress amidst the juggle of work and family responsibilities - Share how you can approach employers about working more flexibly and other needs related to caring related responsibilities - Provide advice on how men can support partners without compromising their own needs The Working Dad’s Survival Guide was an Amazon #1 best-seller for both fatherhood and career advice. The content has struck a chord. Here’s what one dad had to say about it… “I wish I had this book when I was taking heat in the corporate world for being an active parent! The suggestions and exercises would have made a big difference, to both support the choices I was making, and help me build a community of other working dads so I would not feel alone.” – Greg Marcus This special event will launch the beginning of Working Dads Connect – a bi-monthly online ‘men’s shed’ style group delivered by Parents At Work coaches and guest speakers.

If you're a new parent and you're finding it much more work and a lot less fun than you thought it would be, you're really going to gain a lot from this show. Today, in the first episode, Tom explains that his idea for the show came from his own experience as a father of four children and the juxtaposition of two books, Jennifer Senior's All Joy And No Fun and Bruce Feiler's The Secrets Of Happy Families. Listen in discover how you can live a happy life, even though you have children.   Today, Tom explains that Jennifer Senior's book is about the phenomenon that parents generally score lower on happiness surveys, when compared with people without children and that this flies in the face of the common belief that having children is the crowning achievement in life. Ms. Senior profiles parents who struggle with expectations placed on them, often by themselves, to raise well-adjusted children, with increasingly fewer available resources, such as time, money, or a network of support from family. Thomas points out that the book does, however, have a silver lining, in that most parents do experience a significant amount of joy and meaning in their lives, due to having children. Bruce Feiler's book, on the other hand, points to some possible solutions to the dilemma of parenting. He looks to the lessons learned in business and in other fields, to see if these methods can be used to teach families to function better. He gives an example from the book, of a family who adopted the use of agile management, a project management tool used in the software industry, to help with family meetings and to streamline the hectic morning routine.    Tom says that he hasn't managed to replicate agile management in his house, however, he does dream! Today, Tom tells you what you can expect to hear in his future episodes and he explains that although solutions are great, at times, it really helps just to know that the problems faced by parents are both common and survivable. Listen in today, as Thomas shares his own parenting story by reading the relevant chapter from his book, You're Pregnant, You're Fired.   Some highlights include:    How he was offered a position as an Assistant to the US Attorney for the District of Columbia, in 2005, when he was thirty-three years old, married and had a ten-month-old son. How little idea he had, prior to the birth of his son, of how much work it would involve to be a parent. Sharing the responsibilities of parenting with his wife, who was also an attorney. Their dog, Sawyer, who had health problems and added to the stress of parenting. His decision to spend as much time as possible with his son. His joining the US Attorney's Office in the fall of 2006 – a harrowing situation for all new prosecutor's, given the long hours and stress. The stress of coming home to a strung out kid and a stressed out wife, after a demanding day at work. His battle with insomnia. How his own routine became more extreme. He was learning a lot, but it was difficult. The birth of his second son, Jonah. How unprepared he was for having two children- no one ever got a break! Being diagnosed with Generalised Anxiety Disorder. That no one at work knew what he was going through. A survey that showed that men with families have it easier than women with families do, in the workplace, yet men tend to be more heavily penalized for taking time off work. His realization that he could no longer maintain the way he was working, trying to balance work and family. His work move to a less stressful situation and his coming down with respiratory tract infection. Opening his own firm and dealing with the guilt of his departure from the US Attorney's office- in the midst of an economic meltdown. His realization that it was having children that had made his balancing act so difficult. Making the choice- career or family? The lack of support by the government, for working families and policy matters that are worth debating in this regard.   Link:   Tom's website: www.spigglelaw.com/podcast
