Most client frustrations don't come from bad design - they come from unclear communication. In this episode I provide actionable communication strategies to prevent problems before they start.I hope you enjoy the episodeBeth xxThree Key Communication Strategies:• Proactive updates that prevent client anxiety • Clear boundaries that protect your time • Transparent pricing that builds trustProactive Communication:• Send weekly or bi-weekly progress updates at appropriate times • Tell clients what's happening before they have to ask • Set expectations about communication frequency upfront • Reassure clients that things are moving forwardSetting Communication Boundaries:• Include a "How We Work" section in your onboarding pack • Specify preferred communication channels • Set clear response times (e.g., within 48 hours, Monday-Friday) • Educate clients who don't follow your guidelinesTransparent Pricing:• Frame pricing as a flexible investment from the start • Break down costs clearly in proposals • Provide specific line items rather than package totals • Update clients on pricing changes as the project evolvesScripts for Tough Conversations:• When clients want extra work: "I'd love to explore that for you. Some additional layouts take extra design time. I can put together a quick estimate so you can decide if you'd like to move forward with it." • When clients question pricing: "I totally understand. Quality cabinetry is a big investment and we've sourced a supplier known for craftsmanship and durability. If we need to adjust the budget, we can look at alternative materials or finishes to bring the cost down. What are you doing with God's whispers? In this episode, Jeff, Jeff, and Bob discuss: Growing up in the family business from greenhouses to fragrance.Willing to try, willing to fail. Integrating business, family, and faith. Building your business with a pastor's heart.   Key Takeaways: Growth never occurs in a straight line. It is easy to write a check. It is harder to be deeply engaged and enter into the story of another. God has called us to be salt and light - in our businesses, we can create opportunities for our employees, supplies, and customers to taste and see the goodness of God. God is guiding our steps even when we can't see where he is leading us. The greatest thing you'll ever steward is God's whispers.   "As someone is kind of struggling through, ‘how do I shape culture' and wanting to do it in a very gospel-centered way, I'd lean into those three principles: How do I intentionally foster a sense of dependence? How do I practice gleaning in a modern sense in my business? How do I listen and what do I do with those whispers?" —  Bob Caldwell Jr. Episode References: Practicing the King's Economy: Honoring Jesus in How We Work, Earn, Spend, Save, and Give by Michael Rhodes, Robby Holt, and Brian Fikkert: https://www.amazon.com/Practicing-Kings-Economy-Honoring-Jesus/dp/0801075742Strong and Weak: Embracing a Life of Love, Risk and True Flourishing by Andy Crouch: https://www.amazon.com/Strong-Weak-Embracing-Life-Flourishing/dp/0830844430 About Bob Caldwell Jr.: Bob Caldwell, Jr. is President of Grace Management Group, a family owned business founded in 1975.  Grace Management Group operates a portfolio of brands and vertically integrated businesses within the fragrance and home décor industries, including Greenleaf, Votivo, Bridgewater Candle Company, The WillowBrook Company, BMC Manufacturing, Notes Candles, Aroma Creations, and Audrey's.  The company operates in Spartanburg, South Carolina; Lebanon, Pennsylvania; and an Asia sourcing office in mainland China.  Bob is a graduate of Wheaton College.  He currently serves on the boards of the Greenleaf Foundation and Grace Cares Foundation.  He is actively involved in international orphan care, adoption, and foster care efforts; anti-human trafficking efforts; and fostering a redemptive entrepreneurial perspective.Bob and his wife, Sarah, have six children, and one grandchild.  They live in Spartanburg, South Carolina.  Connect with Bob Caldwell Jr.:Website: https://www.gracemg.com/Website: https://votivo.com/Website: https://bridgewatercandles.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bob-caldwell-jr-42b99157   Connect with Jeff Thomas: Website: https://www.arkosglobal.com/Podcast: https://www.generousbusinessowner.com/Book: https://www.arkosglobal.com/trading-upEmail: jeff.thomas@arkosglobal.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/ArkosGlobalAdv Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/arkosglobal/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/arkosglobaladvisorsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/arkosglobaladvisors/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLUYpPwkHH7JrP6PrbHeBxw

The manager-direct report relationship is one of the most critical in every workplace. It can make or break the employee experience. What helps make it successful is a consistent check-in cadence for employees to raise concerns or seek support. But beyond frequency, there isn't a lot of training for managers and there's even less research as to what makes them work. Steven Rogelberg is the author of the new book Glad We Met: The Art of Science of 1:1 Meetings, a rare exploration of the recipe for an effective check-in between a manager and direct report. In this episode of How We Work, he explains the responsibilities of managers and direct reports, and ultimately what an effective check-in should look and sound like.Edited by: Mike LovettMusic by: Breakmaster CylinderLINKSSteven's websiteThese 1:1 meetings are especially helpful for employee groups that have historically been marginalized in the workplace. Throughout our chat, we touched upon the impact of environment and circumstance on one's life trajectory. While I've been able to push my ideas forward, Lakpa's journey has been met with hurdles, from government interventions to economic downturns. While many podcasts shine a spotlight on the successful, today we pivot to share the story of someone who, despite adversity, continues to strive and dream. I hope Lakpa's story inspires, enlightens, and provides a fresh perspective on life and ambition. Thanks for being a part of the "How We Work" family. Instead of just chasing likes and followers on social media, real success comes from forming authentic connections with dedicated fans. Is 'Systemic Injustice' Biblical? (Michael Rhodes)

The Biblical Mind

Terms like "systemic sin" or "structural injustice" immediately make many people think of contemporary ideologies that they either strongly embrace or strongly oppose, such as socialism or the much-discussed (but poorly understood) critical race theory. These charged terms are often employed in vague or unhelpful ways. The Bible has many examples of sin and injustice that are not purely individual—of evil that is bigger than the sum of the evildoers, and iniquity that reverberates through generations. How can we think more clearly and biblically about the nature of evil and injustice? Sin is many things in Scripture: an action, an identity, an agent or power, and the brokenness of structures and systems. People err when they don't grasp the Bible's full, complex picture of sin. Michael Rhodes (PhD, Trinity College Bristol/University of Aberdeen) is a Lecturer in Old Testament at Carey Baptist College. He is an ordained minister in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, author of Formative Feasting: Practices and Virtue Ethics in the Deuteronomic Tithe Meal and Corinthian Lord's Supper (2022), and co-author of Practicing the King's Economy: Honoring Jesus in How We Work, Earn, Spend, Save, and Give. Show notes: 00:26 Unjust kings don't act alone; the state is more than the sum of its parts 06:46 The positive side: people were created to be mediators of God's blessing 12:34 English hides the second-person plural 14:32 The structures of society create incentives and disincentives for behaviors 15:38 Intergenerational sin in Scripture 18:14 People's inconsistent resistance to the idea of systemic injustice and sin 22:49 What is sin? It's both individual and communal, personal and systemic 31:10 Is this leaning toward socialism or critical race theory? 41:06 Cornel West for president? 41:56 Exercising power faithfully in different kinds political, economic, and cultural contexts 43:48 Paradigmatic depictions of God's kingdom should be announced and emulated in the church Show notes by Celina Durgin

The Biden Administration's recent student debt forgiveness act in the U.S. has sparked conversations—many of them heated—about the nature of fairness, justice, poverty, and economic well-being. In this episode, Michael Rhodes joins Dru to discuss debt forgiveness in Scripture and the modern world. Rhodes surveys the radical Torah policies of cyclical debt forgiveness and the Year of Jubilee, and how they contrast with the debt forgiveness policies in the rest of the ancient Near East. A world of subsistence farming where predatory loans can create cycles of debt slavery and intergenerational poverty may not immediately seem similar to modern America—but on a closer look, similarities appear. Michael Rhodes is a Lecturer in Old Testament at Carey Baptist College in New Zealand. He has worked on community development programs in Kenya and South Memphis, and has also served as a pastor. His academic research focuses on the nature of justice and mercy in Torah economics and ritual meals in Scripture. He is also co-author of Practicing the King's Economy: Honoring Jesus in How We Work, Earn, Spend, Save, and Give. Introduction: Are you currently shopping around physical therapy clinics but unsure what your insurance will cover? Many clinics will limit the type of treatment you receive based on what your insurance will allow, which leads to a lot of passive treatment with an aide or assistant (not a physical therapist). Most clinics also run on a quantity model to be sure that they are seeing enough patients to be making money, instead of focusing on the quality of care. Insurance limitations are annoying, that's why at Revitalize Physical Therapy, we do things a bit differently. With upfront payments, you will never receive a surprise bill in the mail from us. Support us on Kofi! (https://ko-fi.com/C0C86NYJW) Have you ever wondered if it's worth breaking the internet? No? Well, today's guest has! Tune in as we chat with Yulia Startsev, a software engineer for Mozilla, and a compiler for JavaScript. We dive into the conversation with who uses semi-colons (and when and why), followed by an anecdote from Yulia about Smoosh and the potential to break the internet. Yulia talks us through the considerations when naming a new JavaScript function, and the promising changes around immutability. We also learn how to remember the difference between the splice and slice functions, and why pattern matching is such an exciting prospect. We hear about the four stages of deciding to change JavaScript, why most programming languages are written in English, and why certain popular functions like caller and colleague were deprecated. We wrap up the episode with a summary of what the array by group function does, who funds the updates to JavaScript, and what Yulia's fantasy changes to the web would be! So, for all this and so much more, tune in today. Key Points From This Episode: Welcome to today's guest, Yulia Startsev, an engineer at Mozilla and compiler for JavaScript.  A discussion around semicolons and who's pro and who's against (and who's neither!). Why it's important not to break the internet: a funny anecdote about SmooshGate.  The considerations to take into account when naming a function.  What's coming to JavaScript: Immutability.  Why Tuples are such an exciting prospect and their role in wrap-around vs incomplete infinite grids.  How the team understands the difference between splicing and slicing.  How Yulia and the JavaScript team come up with new names.  The idea behind pattern matching, and how it will reduce the cognitive load on developers.  The four stages of deciding to accept a change to JavaScript.  Why most programming languages are written in English.  Why the caller and colleague functions were deprecated.  Array by group: what it is, why it's interesting, and the readability issues it is facing.  Things the team would love to add to or change in JavaScript.  When Yulia is willing to break the web.  Who funds the updates and changes to JavaScript.  Yulia's fantasy changes to JavaScript, and why these are far in the future.  Where you can find out more about Yulia! Today's picks: from board games to body pillows to YouTube essayists.  Tweetables: “Pattern matching is a proposal I am quite excited about, switch in case statements are very interesting in JavaScript. On this episode of How We Work, we are talking about hope. One, because winter has given way to spring and there is a natural sense of rejuvenation. And two, April is National Stress Awareness month. It feels like as good a time as any to talk about an issue our research has made us very aware of over the last few years and that is that many employees (and perhaps listeners to this podcast) are stressed and burned out. Our guest this week is Dan Tomasulo. He is a counseling psychologist, psychodramatist, author, professor at Columbia University, and next month he will be a featured speaker at Workhuman® Live in Atlanta. On this episode, he will be teaching us how to hope so that we can bring it into the workplace and the rest of our lives. Two years ago, hybrid work was widely uncommon, a sparse benefit. Now, in many industries, it's the predominant way of working. Two years ago, stress and burnout were well-kept secrets within office walls. Now, reducing that stress is (or at least should be) a primary objective for just about every HR team out there. The workplace is almost unrecognizable compared to early 2020. But two years into COVID, trends and challenges are crystallizing to present a clear picture of the state of the workplace now and where it is headed. It is a workplace with one foot in the future of work and the other held in place by the complexities of the Great Resignation and the continued need to reduce stress and increase equity in the workplace. On this episode of How We Work, Dr. Meisha-ann Martin, senior director of people analytics and research at Workhuman®, and Dr. Isha Vicaria, a social psychologist and researcher on the Workhuman® iQ team, break down our most recent survey report Two Years into COVID: The State of the Human Workplace. In Episode #207, I talk with Bill Jensen. Bill is the CEO of the management consulting firm, The Jensen Group, and is a world-renowned thought leader who has been given the nickname, Mr. Simplicity. As a CIO and Business IT Leader here are some wins you will get by listening: -You need two kinds of mentors- one that makes you feel comfortable, and one that pushes you to get outside of your comfort zone. (27:30) -Storytelling is the most impactful way to simplify an idea. (7:30) -The most important asset that everyone has right now is their time and attention. (8:00) -The way you focus on time is to respect the fact that everyone only gets 1,440 minutes in one day. (9:30) -Only 9.8% of people surveyed said they can achieve their dreams where they currently work. (21:30) -The two components of simplicity are empathy and storytelling. (7:00) -We can teach anybody anything. We can give anybody any problem if we give it to them at their level, not ours. (4:30) -Three years from now, you will have a lifetime worth of change to deliver. What is the legacy you want to leave behind? (18:30) -2020 has taught us that we need to focus on personal impact. (25:00) Bill has spent the last 30 years studying the best ways work can get done. He is a passionate simpleton who is against corporate stupidity that wastes people's time, attention, and dreams. Some of the biggest topics Bill covers with his work are the top essentials for leading people into tomorrow, creating cultural agility with digital transformation, and developing focus, speed, and clarity in today's crazy world. Bill has worked with numerous large corporations on these topics, including American Express, GE, IBM, and SAP. Bill's competitive advantage is his work ethic and passion for making it easier for everyone to work smarter, not harder. He has interviewed and surveyed over 1 million people and always has an eye for the future. This eye for the future prompted IBM to invite Bill to be a part of their exclusive Futurist think tank community. At a time when work has become more challenging than ever, we're going to explore one myth and one revelation. The myth -- which many of us, myself included, have consciously or subconsciously incorporated into our lives — is that we need to grind ourselves into dust through faux “productivity” in order to achieve professional success. “I think all of us can sense that something has gone wrong in America.”Despite new levels of financial and material success, it feels like America is a more depressed and divided country than ever. But what does this have to do with economics? And how should faith driven investors respond? Today’s guest, Brian Fikkert, has a Biblically-based economics lesson in store for us today that asks all the right questions. How can we have unprecedented wealth and declining happiness? Why doesn’t material wealth automatically lead to human flourishing? And what does the economy, both locally and globally, have to do with our relationship with God?Brian Fikkert takes cues from both the economy and the Bible, and as you’ll hear in this episode, when we merge those two things, we come to the realization that what happens to us physically, relationally, and economically affects us spiritually. Tune in to hear Brian Fikkert’s take on mainstream economic thinking and how everyone, no matter their income-level, can glorify God through the way they save, spend, and invest their money. Work – paid and unpaid – is something we all do every day. Most of us spend more time working than anything else we do in life. Yet this important area of our life often feels distant or totally disconnected from our faith. This week we talk about how our faith informs How We Work. The post How We Work appeared first on New Denver Church.

Contractor Success Map with Randal DeHart | Contractor Bookkeeping And Accounting Services

This Podcast Is Episode Number 0214 And It Will Be About Proven Contractor Bookkeeping Road Map We Make Contractor Bookkeeping Look Easy Because we do it every day, Monday through Friday and some holidays. This makes it over 300 days per year. With multiple clients, we are not new; it’s not new. The same goes in your field of Construction. You do many of the same things over and over again. The end result is so clean and tidy when the customer is watching you it looks like it was effortlessly done. That’s so simple “Why Couldn’t I Do That.” When I tried, it seems to be “A Lot Harder.” Everyone has a skill set. Construction Bookkeeping and Construction Accounting is what we do. I confess – we think we find it easier having come from a Construction Background (for Randal growing up in a construction family and for us personally having started, owned, operated several Construction Companies). We can speak with conviction about the basics and the more complex issues as you grow your Construction Company, Handyman Company, Trade Contractor or any one of the dozens of Construction Company types we serve. Short List Construction Contractors We Serve  Brand New Construction Company    Handyman Company Cabinet Installer    HVAC Contractor Carpentry Contractor    Insulation Contractor     Carpet And Tile Contractor    Interior Designer       Commercial Tenant Improvement Contractor   Land Development Company Concrete Contractor    Landscape Contractor     Construction Company   Masonry Contractor Construction Manager   Mold Remediation Company       Contracting Company    Moss Removal Company       Contractor   Painting Contractor       Custom Deck Builder    Plumbing Contractor       Custom Home Builder    Pressure Washing Company       Demolition Contractor    Remodel Construction Company       Drywall Contractor    Renovation Contractor       Electrical Contractor    Restoration Contractor       Emerging Contractor    Roofing Contractor       Excavation Contractor    Spec Home Builder       Finish Millwork Contractor    Specialty Contractor       Flipper House Contractor    Subcontractor Flooring Contractor    Trade Contractor       Framing Contractor    Underground Contractor       General Contractor    Utility Contractor       Glass Installation Contractor    Construction Employees     Gutter Installation Company    Construction Support Specialist   Additional QuickBooks Templates, Resources, And Services QuickBooks Set Up Templates   Solopreneur QuickBooks Chart Of Accounts     Free Stuff QuickBooks Item Lists Templates     Consulting   We Serve Over 100 Types Of Contractors So If Your Type Of Company Is Not Listed Please Do Not Be Concerned Because If You Are A Contractor There Is A Good Chance We Can Help You! Call Now: 206-361-3950 You must decide for yourself the benefit and value of having W2 employees. Other options include using a Staffing Service, subcontractors, becoming a consultant or Project Manager, 1099 Contractors or keeping the company smaller where no outside employees are needed. All of us need employees. The question is “Are They, Ours? Yes, we have direct employees. I can tell you we do not have as many direct employees as when we were Construction Contractors. Do we ever intend to have that many direct employees again? No Never, not ever in this lifetime. When we are reviewing software and services; we look for the larger companies who HAVE employees. We want to have access to their Customer Support and Tech Support (all are indirect employees). Outsourcing means we have access to highly qualified staff without all the headache and expense of in-house employees. This is what it takes to keep everything running smoothly (Plus good equipment). Fast Computers, Multiple Monitors, each office with their own printer, Hi-Speed Internet, Hi-Speed Scanners, good office environment with large “L” shaped desks, plus additional tables as work areas, comfortable office chairs, and finally working HVAC system. Hats off to Construction Companies who have 20, 30, 50 or more direct employees: ·    As you grow, there are additional regulations that come with more and more employees. ·    Recommend using a 3rd Party Payroll Service with an HR Component. ·    Suggest paying Bi-Weekly unless mandated to pay weekly. ·    Use Electronic Timecard.  Limit Employee Advances.   ·    Give Perks and Benefits that employees will appreciate. ·    Pay Well – There is a balance between Under Paying and Over Paying your employees.   ·    Reward the productive employees. ·    Have written Coaching Reports for those who need a little reminder.   ·    Don’t be afraid to “Let Someone Go” if it is no longer a “Good Fit.” ·    Some employees want to leave and just don’t know how to Quit. ·    They do not want to leave and have “Hard Feelings, ” but they want to move on.   Many challenges “Big or Small” are exactly the same for all companies: ·    Keeping Track of Paperwork ·    Developing Processes ·    Creating Estimates ·    Getting Signed Change Orders ·    Creating Customer Invoices in a Timely Manner ·    Presenting The Invoice To The Customer ·    Asking For Money ·    Paying their Bills ·    Focusing On Tomorrow ·    Dealing With Today ·    Learning From Yesterday How can you do all of those things all at the same time? It is simple; but not easy. It takes practice Finding a “Good Bookkeeper” who understands construction and your issues is a First Start. Note – I did not say find a bookkeeper who will come to your house, pick up your mail, open it. Decide what is important. Deposit the checks, Write the checks, Pay the bills. That is a role for you, your spouse or a partner – not an outsider. Do not give a bookkeeper TOO MUCH AUTHORITY or you could wake up one day and be a victim of Bookkeeper Embezzlement! I have known bookkeepers who have “Presented themselves as part of Management” (as a Partner) which upon further questions to the actual owner I learned that was not true. (Just The Bookkeeper) Same has been true for Project Managers, Estimators, and other Field Employees who go beyond their authority. It is easy to spend “Other People’s Money” it is so much easier than spending our own. The local paper recently had an article about a “Bad Bookkeeper” who had been caught embezzling the Contractor’s funds for several years. The hardship to the Contractor and the loss of money is enormous. The Bad Bookkeeper was convicted, but even if restitution is 100%, it will take years and years to be pay off.   In the meantime, the Contractor has a Problem – A Huge Problem. That money is GONE! Fast Easy Accounting presents and provides a “We Solution” Our focus is mostly “After The Fact” Accounting. We never want any Government Agency to say we “Should Have Paid Something.” We also never want for our Clients to worry that we spent their money on Anything. The only funds we touch is our own fees – we auto receive Weekly (on Mondays) or Monthly (1st Day of the month) depending on the services provided.  All services are Month-To-Month; ending on last day of the month. We Enter All Of Your Paperwork Into QuickBooks Desktop Version In The Cloud Accessible 24/7 From Your Desktop, Laptop, Notebook, Tablet, Smart Phone Any Web-Enabled Device Including iPads, iPhones, Apple, MacBook We use a Commercial Host approved by Intuit. Access it like going to the Bank – log into your account, view, print reports, move money between accounts and chose if you want to use “online bill pay” feature. We embrace Cloud Services (especially those with a Master Dashboard). State Governments are also embracing Cloud Access for many Government Services. All the State of Washington agencies work together; if a contractor is audited The Agency involved is asking for documents beyond what they need to help the other agencies. What does this mean? ·    Good Recordkeeping ·    Customer Invoices ·    Customer Payments   ·    Timecards ·    Employee Paystubs ·    Bank Statements ·    General Receipts We have a Tried And True Contractors Bookkeeping System ·    One which includes a Cloud based Document Management System where you send  your documents ·    You can forward emails, scan, snap a picture, scan and send PDFs, whatever is easy for you. ·    If you use a “Main Stream” bank with enhanced images, you can link the bank feeds to our paperless server and get your contractors bookkeeping service running almost 100% autopilot!   What Does "Full-Service Contractor Bookkeeping” Mean To You? For many contractors, it means Hire someone – usually anyone at all who says Yes – I will do everything. Giving that BRAND NEW Person all the user names, passwords, authorization to sign checks and run back out to the field as fast as possible and “Forget About It – Everything Is Handled” For many Construction Contractors That Answer Is Wrong | Very Bad | Leads To Painful Results! I’m Sorry for those who were hoping – This is not “How We Work.”   In our system – It is a “We Process” We want YOU to “Help Us Help You.”   A Major Part of this process is that “You Control The Money.” ·    Receiving The Money ·    Paying the Bills ·    Hiring ·    Promoting ·    Coaching ·    Firing Employees.   You are an Owner, not a Manager – Making Decisions Is A Daily Activity Though there is a lot of managing the day-to-day activities of owning and operating a business.   Our part is getting every scrap of paper (income or expense) in an accounting system. We use QuickBooks Desktop so that you have the reports you need to properly make decisions.   Your Tax Accountant understands the QuickBooks layout and maps their Tax Software to it.   I am reminded of a book about decision making I read to our son as a small child. David Decides About Behaviors: A Story for Children, a Guide for Parents by Susan Heitler The same principle applies to everyone. Each one of us is David.   We make decisions every day about everything.  No decision is a decision.     We are here to help – If you will let us!   AND if you will do Your Part it can be a seamless activity without undue stress on either side. With good accounting, you are able to focus on getting your work done. You do not have to explain to use How To Do The Bookkeeping – We Know What To Do! I recommend being an S-Corp over an LLC or Sole Prop. This week’s guest on the Future of Work Podcast is William Davies.  William Davies is the author of a book called The Happiness Industry: How the Government and Big Business Sold Us Well-Being.  He is also the Senior Lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London. This is a very interesting topic, as engagement, health, happiness, and wellness are all topics that many companies are discussing and investing millions of dollars in. In William Davies’ book, he argues that we should be cautious when putting all of our investments in happiness and engagement.  His point of view will make you question if we are a bit carried away with this movement and focus on happiness.  William Davies works on combining the history of ideas and a critical sociology of political and economic institutions. He is very interested in the way our economy is governed, and is shaped by theories of markets, individuals, and in the case of his book, theories of the mind. The ideas and methodologies used by experts, are used to correlate how we think and how it effects the economy, also how we run our organizations.  His book is a critique of the way our vision of happiness is becoming more and more powerful in how we transform the workplace and govern our private lives.  What you will learn in this episode: What is Happiness? How is it Measured? What is the Different Between Engagement and Happiness? Commoditization of Happiness What Impact Happiness Should Have on How We Work? How is Happiness Measured? Paradox of happiness The Rise of Stress in the Workplace Effects of Manipulation in the Workplace   (Music by Ronald Jenkees)

In May of 2001, we held our first Film Festival. That year, we did something that was really new: We made movies that were completely produced on the computer. At that time we did not realize that this simple idea, to have students and teachers use more technology in class, would lead Mabry Middle School to set the standard for technology innovation in public schools for the entire United States. The power of ideas! The idea was simple. The idea was transformational. The power of this little idea led us to receive the prestigious Schools of Distinction Award for Technology Innovation from Scholastic and Intel Corporation. Because of this national recognition, Mabry has had over 200 visitors come to our school from all over the nation to learn about what we do. Magazine articles have been written in professional journals about us. And our school even received over a quarter of a million dollars in grants and technology donations. Mabry actually competed against over 3,600 schools around the nation that applied for the award. We were even competing in the high school division. Because of this innovative use of technology for learning, the film festival, we won! Tonight we have the privilege and the pleasure to welcome you to the 5th Annual Mabry Middle School Film Festival. Tonight we celebrate our theme: “The Power of Ideas–-Stories From Our Studies.” Our first category for the evening is Best Teaching and Learning. The objective for these movies was to create a movie that would be the best representation of curricular significance. The nominees in this category are: The Dark Side of Chocolate Generation of Conscience History Remembers Inventions--Ideas of How We Work and Play You Must Be the Change Click the link above to download the movies in this category just as they were presented on April 25, 2006, the night of our film festival.
