Purchase Fred Diamond's best-sellers Love, Hope, Lyme: What Family Members, Partners, and Friends Who Love a Chronic Lyme Survivor Need to Know and Insights for Sales Game Changers now! Today's show featured an interview with Lori Mihalich-Levin, founder of Mindful Return, and Rebecca Kwei, sales leader at Phathom Pharmaceuticals. The interview was conducted by Gina Stracuzzi, IES Women in Sales Program Director. Read more about the PWISE designation and program here. LORI'S ADVICE: "For employers, I'd say, what is the current experience that your new parents are having? Ask that question. Can you answer the question, what is the experience that they're having? If you don't really know the answer, then go talk to them and do exactly what Rebecca's employer did, which is to ask for their feedback." REBECCA'S ADVICE: "Be bold and ask the questions that need to be asked. But we need to take it one step further and think of how what you're saying will be received, or what you're asking will be received to that particular audience. Because that can really help you adapt and ask it the right way where you're going to get the response that you really need."
“We are both keeper-in-touchers,” says Jason Levin, author of the book Relationships to Infinity, which studies the art and science of keeping in touch. He and his wife Lori Mihalich-Levin first met on September 11, 2001 in France and stayed in contact as Lori built her law career and Jason built a career which includes his current role as a keynote speaker, trainer and business development coach at Ready, Set, Launch. This practice of keeping in touch has carried over into their married life as well. In a conversation at the kitchen sink, having put their two young sons to bed, Lori asked why there wasn't a program to help new parents navigate their personal and professional lives. After Jason asked her what she could do to solve the problem, she began in earnest what would become Mindful Returns, a program which guides new parents transition back to work after parental leave. The two touch base each Saturday night by consolidating what they call the “daily detritus” into one basket in order to tackle the duties of parenthood together. This idea was inspired by Atul Gawande's “Checklist Manifesto. The two have also been inspired by Eve Rodsky's book “Fair Play,” and they discuss the importance of a balanced division of labor in a household. Lori and Jason's support for one another is obvious. Join today's discussion to hear their advice on how to write a book or make a speech in public and find out how Jason earned the name The TicTac Guy! Quotes “The foundation of Relationships to Infinity is the social science behind networks, and how we think about our approach to connection and reconnection. Lori was just talking about the fact that we both are ‘keeper-in-touchers.' There's actually a lot of social science behind that.” (8:44 | Jason) “I said to my dear husband, ‘There should be a program out there, a class I can take about how to transition into working parenthood. I can take a class on how to massage my baby, puree baby food, make a birth plan. I can't take a class on how to navigate the personal and professional identity crisis I'm having as I become a working parent. And Jason said, ‘Well, what are you going to do about it?' And thus, the program that I created, Mindful Return, was born.” (10:53 | Lori) “Too often when we think about building something entrepreneurial, it has to be in the garage, venture funded, all these things. But what if you take little bite sized pieces with mind numbing detail on a weekly basis and you build something?” (14:26 | Jason) “There are so many dual career working couples these days, that this is an issue and it spills into the workplace too. Because if you have if you're doing 90% of the mental work of your household, you're just not able to focus on your job as much as someone who is doing 10% of the mental work of a household.” (21:52 | Lori) “Parenthood made me so much of a better public speaker, because before we had kids, I would stew about the slides. And I would sit there and analyze them, and I'd memorize my script. And then we had kids, and I said, ‘I don't have time for any of that. And I just showed up as who I was, and I was much more spontaneous, and I hadn't over prepared anything, and people liked that better.” (33:14 | Lori) Links The Checklist Manifesto - Atul Gawal https://a.co/d/hppObRx Fair Play: A Game-Changing Solution for When You Have Too Much to Do By Eve Rodsky https://a.co/d/6ZoaX2O Parents at Work Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/parents-at-work/id1239258343 Connect with Lori Mihalich-Levin: LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/lorimihalichlevin/ Mindful Return https://www.mindfulreturn.com/ Lori's book - Back to Work After Baby - https://www.mindfulreturn.com/back-work-after-baby-book/ Connect with Jason Levin: READY, SET, LAUNCH readysetlaunch.net LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jasonlevinspeakertrainercoach/ Jason's book - Relationships to Infinity Connect with Chris Batz: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chrisbatz/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theliongroupkc Instagram: @theliongroupllc Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

My guest this week is psychologist and author Dr. Jill Stoddard, who recently wrote a book called Imposter No More: Overcome Self-Doubt and Imposterism to Cultivate a Successful Career. Jill and I had a great discussion about feeling like an imposter—why it happens, who's likely to have the experience, and most important, how to deal with those thoughts and feelings. The solution probably won't be what you expect because the answer is not to force yourself to think and feel differently. Most of us find that our thoughts and feelings kind of have a mind of their own, and trying to make them change is often more frustrating than successful. So if you've wrestled with the imposter syndrome, you'll find this conversation really helpful. Topics we discussed included: What the imposter syndrome is Terminology: imposterism, imposter syndrome, imposter phenomenon Who is likely to feel like an imposter The lack of solid research into imposterism Possible evolutionary adaptations related to feeling like an imposter The degree to which imposterism is based on past experiences Why more success typically is not the answer to feeling like a fraud or out of place Where in our lives imposterism tends to show up most often Jill's own experience of trying to do more and more and eventually burning out The difficulty in trying to get rid of imposter thoughts and feelings Psychological flexibility as a way to make peace with imposterism Different ways of saying the same thing in the therapy world The different meanings of fear depending on the context Thoughts that are more or less likely to be disputed effectively The difficulty in believing the good things that others see in us Jill Stoddard, PhD, is passionate about sharing science-backed ideas from psychology to help people thrive. She is a psychologist, TEDx speaker, award-winning teacher, peer-reviewed ACT trainer, and cohost of the popular Psychologists off the Clock podcast. Jill has written two books in addition to her latest one: Be Mighty, and The Big Book of ACT Metaphors. Her writing has also appeared in Psychology Today, Scary Mommy, Thrive Global, the Good Men Project, Mindful Return, and The Washington Post. She regularly appears on podcasts as an expert source for various media outlets. Jill lives in Massachusetts with her husband, two kids, and disobedient French bulldog. Today I sit down with Stormme and Nolo from Mindful Return South Africa to talk about a mother's journey from career woman to mom and balancing the two roles. Mindful Return is a global program aimed at supporting new mothers transitioning back to work. Originally founded in the United States by a new mom who faced challenges returning to work after having her first child, the South African division is managed by Stormme and Nolo. Stormme and Nolo are both qualified attorneys. They were drawn to the program because after having children, they realised that there were numerous resources and information available during pregnancy and childbirth, but there was a lack of support and guidance for new mothers regarding the transition back to work. Mindful Return aims to address this gap. Common challenges when returning to work The super moms talked about some of the common struggles mothers face when returning to work. Including not knowing what they can ask for in terms of work arrangements and flexibility. And a general lack of information about topics like maternity leave, managing sick days, work-life balance, breastfeeding and expressing at work and more. We then delve into maternity leave and how to have conversations with your boss or manager about flexible work arrangements. Stormme and Nolo share some great tips with moms about how to have those conversations. They recommend being confident and clear about your needs and expectations. Coming prepared with a wish list of what you want in terms of maternity leave, flexible work arrangements, and other support. They also stress the importance of not to apologizing for asking and to communicate assertively. Choosing childcare and preparing to go back to the workplace I ask them to share some tips about how moms can prepare for going back to work. The moms talk about how mothers should understand that it's normal to feel separation anxiety. They can expect to have various emotions about returning to work. They should give themselves time to adjust and lean into their support system. Whether it's daycare, nursery schools, nannies, or co-parenting. There is no right or wrong answer. The best choice of child care depends on what works well for the family. I love this nugget of advice that the Mindful Return ladies offer listeners! I asked them what advice they had for moms facing challenges in managing work and family responsibilities. Nolo and Stormme agree that moms should recognize that they are not giving away their child's care. Rather, they are doubling the love and being excellent role model by pursuing their careers. They also say that building trust and communication with caregivers is vital to ensure that the child's needs are met while they are at work. I personally have lived the journey of a career mom and absolutely love the insights these ladies have to share. I'm also a huge proponent of the concept of a mindful return to work and all that entails. That's why we will be launching a short Mindful Return course on the Parent Sense app for moms needing guidance to make the transition smoothly. Download the Parent Sense app to be the first to know!

Lori Mihalich-Levin is the Founder and CEO of Mindful Return, a movement that helps new parents navigate the uncertain terrain of working parenthood. Currently, 92 employers offer the Mindful Return program to support employees in their transition to working parenthood. Additionally, Lori is the author of Back to Work After Baby: How to Plan and Navigate a Mindful Return from Maternity Leave and created the Mindful Return Maternity Leave E-Course. She also co-hosts the Parents At Work podcast and is a healthcare lawyer in private practice at her own firm, The GME Group, PLLC. Lori's thought leadership on issues related to working parenthood has been featured in publications including Forbes, The Washington Post, and New York Times Parenting. As a working parent of two boys, Lori understands the need for a supportive community of working parents — especially when you're first transitioning from parental leave. Her mission is to help parents feel empowered to make thoughtful choices and be present both with their babies and in their careers. In this episode… Working parents wear many hats and often struggle to find the support needed to thrive in both their personal life and professional career. After transitioning back to work after parental leave, numerous parents deal with the guilt of leaving their children, logistical challenges of finding childcare, and a lack of confidence that they can show up the way they used to at work. Can new parents find success in both areas of their life without sacrifice? When Lori Mihalich-Levin was a new mom transitioning back into her legal career, she found many resources focused on the baby but nothing about personal and professional identity transition. Desperate for help as a working parent, Lori created her own program, Mindful Return, which helps new parents gain support from other working parents and find the resources needed to grow in all areas of their life. But Mindful Return doesn't stop with the parents — Lori and her team are on a mission to help employers retain new parent talent and keep their employees' careers on an upward trajectory. In this episode of The Lawyer's Edge Podcast, Elise Holtzman sits down with Lori Mihalich-Levin, the Founder and CEO of Mindful Return, to talk about working parenthood and parental leave. Lori discusses the importance of destigmatizing parental leave for both men and women, how employers can help new parents navigate the transition, and how Mindful Return is helping both new and experienced parents succeed in their personal and professional life.
Returning to work has been known to be difficult for new parents for a wide variety of reasons: lack of sleep, implicit biases that new parents face, finding the time and space to pump breast milk, postpartum, hormonal changes, separation anxiety and guilt, getting back in the swing of work duties and schedules, and so much more. According to Parents.com, women are three times more likely than men to have to leave the workforce due to pandemic-related child care demands. Lori Mihalich-Levin, CEO of Mindful Return and advocate for working parents said, it's important that new parents connect with other parents who are returning to work, talk to a therapist, or social worker to receive support and normalize the stresses and fears that one may be facing alone. She also advised for parents to take parental leave, as it is necessary for recovery and can help destigmatize caregiving for both men and women. "I'd say that you shouldn't feel any guilt about wanting to start your baby's life off on a healthy foot and to recover yourself. So I'd say, ditch the guilt. This is a major life event and the work will be there and you'll be okay if you take some time to pause," Mihalich-Levin said. " When it becomes completely normal for a new parent, whether a man or a woman to take a leave, then there will be less discrimination against women in the hiring process." She said a good parental leave policy is gender neutral and provides about six months in paid leave. If your job doesn't have this kind of parental leave policy, she advised that people create working parent groups to seek change in their workplace or connect with local advocacy groups to make a difference.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today, my guest is Lori Mihalich-Levin. Laurie is an attorney who, as she likes to say, practices law as a side gig. She's a solo practitioner and also the founder of called Mindful Return. This is a really interesting business organization, course, book, and blog, all about the issues regarding the return to the workplace of parents after parental leave and that more transient dynamic that is associated with going on parental leave. It's a fascinating discussion, I think she's hit on something that is really important in the workplace and is certain to grow by leaps and bounds going forward. So I'm very happy to be able to share with you my conversation with Lori Mihalich-Levin! In this episode, Neil and Lori discuss: How Lori balances practicing law, running Mindful Return, and being a mom to 2 rambunctious boys. What it means to do policy work. The importance of taking care of parents returning to work (that doesn't have to do with the baby only). Setting boundaries with work. Key Takeaways: There are more practice areas than are talked about in law school. More work than most people know goes into the policy log that is referenced in 30 sections on the evening news. Build in time for micro moments of mindfulness as new parents. Small, intentional changes throughout your day will drastically change how you show up for yourself, your clients, and your children. More and more places have gender neutral leave policies, but it is still not equal. "What I wish is that employers would focus more on conversations around logistics, making fewer assumptions around or just dictating, having open ended conversations, and recognizing that the person who left before they had a child is not the same person who was coming back afterwards." — Lori Mihalich-Levin Get in touch with Lori Mihalich-Levin: Website: https://www.mindfulreturn.com/ (https://www.mindfulreturn.com/) Book: https://www.mindfulreturn.com/back-work-after-baby-book/ (https://www.mindfulreturn.com/back-work-after-baby-book/) Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/parents-at-work/id1239258343 (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/parents-at-work/id1239258343) LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lorimihalichlevin/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/lorimihalichlevin/) Twitter: https://twitter.com/mindfulreturn (https://twitter.com/mindfulreturn) Thank you to our sponsors! http://callruby.com/lawentrepreneur (Ruby Receptionist) - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to http://callruby.com/lawentrepreneur (callruby.com/lawentrepreneur) or call 844.895.7829 Coach Rockwell - Mark Rockwell works with lawyers who are frustrated by their inability to scale up and become more profitable. In this episode of Parents at Work, Lori Mihalich-Levin and Jason Levin interview Jewelyn Cosgrove, a government affairs professional in Washington D.C. Jewelyn currently serves Melwood, a 501(c)(3) organization serving people with disabilities, as the Vice President of government relations, bringing with her 15 years of experience in public policy, lobbying, and advocacy. Outside of work, Jewelyn is passionate about elevating the needs of mothers and families and serves as the treasurer of Raising Our Future Political Action Committee, a PAC that’s aimed at electing congressional candidates that prioritize the needs of families. Jewelyn’s work has been focused on promoting and empowering parents to negotiate and advocate for their needs. She lives in Asheville, Virginia with her husband Greg, two children, and their two amazing cats. She is an alumna of the Mindful Return program and continues to serve the program as a coach to new mums. Jewelyn shares how Lori’s program, Mindful Return, helped her with her career and motherhood and highlights the fact that being a working mom, especially with more than one kid, means more work and a bigger family that you'll want to keep happy and strong. Organizational skills become more important than ever when you mix in growing your career, and Jewelyn has learned to manage “balancing” her time on a weekly basis, instead of getting obsessed about day-to-day work-life balance. You’ll want to join this lively conversation to learn more about life as a parent who works on Capitol Hill, the challenges of working in government affairs and parenting at the same time, navigating challenging conversations with your kids, and most importantly, how to figure out your own effective way of successfully parenting your kids while growing your career. Lori Mihalich-Levin believes that parenthood can make a person a better employee. Parenting entails time management, project management, multitasking, prioritizing and budgeting, to name a few things. When Lori was on maternity leave from her role as a medical reimbursement attorney, Lori created Mindful Return out of sheer desperation. After being unable to find resources to assist a parent into being a new parent and this change in their identity, Lori created the program to assist the new parent with this transition. Employers are able to offer the program to their employees as a benefit when they are on parental leave. Mindful Return is an online program that assists people in transitioning back into the workforce after parental leave. Each program is a cohort of parents with different employers. Mindful Return is available for those who identify as moms, dads, are parenting special needs children, adoptive parents, and surrogate parents. There is also a manager track of Mindful Return which prepares a manager for the biggest differences when a team member is on leave. You may register for Mindful Return as an individual, or connect your Human Resources department with Mindful Return. Visit mindfulreturn.com for additional details. “Micro self-care really matters,” says Lori Mihalich-Levin, partner at a global law firm and founder of Mindful Return, an online community for working parents transitioning back from parental leave. In this episode of the Working Moms podcast, Lori is talking about all her tips and tricks for parents transitioning back to work -- from building community to buying noise cancelling headphones so you can work from home without going bonkers. Lori focuses the conversation around the four pillars of her Mindful Return program: mindset, logistics, leadership, and connection. Those pillars are based on her own experience as a working mom trying to go back to the law firm without any support or guidance. As Lori says, “There were a ton of classes about what my baby needs, but nothing about what I need as a parent.” Lori shares tons of amazing, tangible, practical tips that you can do, whether you are back in the office or still working from home in this week's episode, so don't miss it! Quotes “People since the dawn of time have been engaged their villages in caring for their children. What we do that's weird is expect that it's just one person that's supposed to be doing it.” (10:59-11:09) “My legacy is normalizing working parenthood. I blare it from the rooftops that I've got these kids and I'm a kickass partner at a law firm. It is possible to have the street cred and have babies as well.” (16:50-17:05) Links https://www.mindfulreturn.com/working-mom-not-abandoning/ Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/theworkingmoms Pamela Maass on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pamela-maass/ Law Mother Website: https://www.lawmother.com Podcast production and show notes provided by FIRESIDE Marketing https://www.meetfireside.com/podcast-production-service/

In many ways, practicing law and being an entrepreneur are completely opposite activities. Entrepreneurs are all about possibilities: What might be? What problems can we solve? Where are the gaps in the marketplace? Lawyers, on the other hand, spend their days identifying risks, thinking about what can go wrong, and managing those risks. There are numerous examples of lawyers who have left the practice to pursue a law-related entrepreneurial opportunity. There are legal technology firms that have been started by former practicing attorneys. There are lawyers like me who have gone into legal recruiting and coaching. There are also attorneys who decide to move in an entirely different direction and start a restaurant or some other business which is not law-related. But what about lawyers who want to continue to practice law but operate a business on the side? My guest in this episode, Lori Mihalich-Levin, is someone who has done just that. Lori is a partner at the law firm Dentons. But she is also the creator of a successful consulting business. Lori and I discuss the genesis for her business, how she grew it, and how she balances her work as a lawyer with her business. Lori also talks about how practicing law makes her a better entrepreneur and how being an entrepreneur makes her a better lawyer. Lori, is a partner in the health care practice at Dentons and the founder and CEO of Mindful Return. She is the author of Back to Work After Baby: How to Plan and Navigate a Mindful Return from Maternity Leave, and co-host of the Parents at Work Podcast. She is mama to two wonderful red-headed boys (ages 7 and just turning 10). Her thought leadership has been featured in publications including Forbes, The Washington Post, New York Times Parenting, Thrive Global, and The Huffington Post.

There are now 60k cases in the US including about 17k in NYC. Anxiety for pregnant women these days is an understatement, made worse by the fact that we cannot even plan for the future as we would in a world without the virus. Because we don't know what we are planning for. Typically when pregnant woman try to focus on what we can control, work usually comes to mind. Personally I was in the midst of fundraising for a new startup I plan to launch, before the epidemic hit. Now that's obviously on hold. But for women who are expecting right now and in more traditional FT jobs, there are things you can do to help feel prepared. Comparison is the thief of joy, Teddy Roosevelt once said. It's tempting to compare our pregnancies deliveries and lives after with life before Coronavirus. But that's not our world anymore. So maybe we should self-soothe by putting our energy into action instead. One person who can help is today's guest. Lori Mihalich-Levin is a mother, lawyer, and founder of www.MindfulReturn.com, a program that helps parents navigate the return to work after parental leave. During this third episode of our Dakini’s Den series, I’m doing something a little differently. I’m inviting you to be a fly on the wall in my 2018 mastermind program- the SHE Leadership Circle. Last week, I sat down with three (amazing!) women from this year’s circle: Lori Mihalich-Levin, a lawyer/author/founder of “The Mindful Return”; Amelia Barrett, a yoga teacher/neurologist; and Lotus Baker, a stay-at-home mom turned yoga/art studio owner. We spoke about the biggest obstacles they overcame in their careers this past year, wonderful opportunities they created as a result of investing in themselves, how the SHE Leadership Circle helped them get where they are, and why they almost didn’t join (but were so glad they did). Today’s talk is for you if you keep saying “I want to put my work out there”– but continue making excuses not to. In 2019, I’m offering the SHE Leadership Circle for the second time. The “upper tier” to A Year of SHE, this mastermind has limited space and is available by application only. (Plus, there’s a generous financial discount for women who join the mastermind by Friday, November 16.)
