Are you ready to finally gain control over your excessive worrying and live a more fulfilling life? In today's episode of Hello Therapy, I delve into the underlying beliefs that fuel excessive worry and share powerful strategies for overcoming it. We'll explore the often invisible yet powerful beliefs that convince us that worry is a badge of care or a tool for perceived control in our lives—beliefs that may be entwined with our very sense of self. I'll challenge you to consider if these notions truly reflect who you are or merely feed the worry beast within.Join me as we navigate a transformative, evidence-based tool, cognitive defusion, where you'll learn to distance yourself from anxious thoughts and worries that demand your attention. Like skillfully avoiding clickbait online, I'll teach you techniques to 'unhook' from negative thoughts and share strategies you can apply immediately. Whether it's writing down your worries to diminish their power or singing them away to the melody of your favourite tune, this episode will help you create a more peaceful mindscape. Topics covered:Introduction to WorryInternal mechanisms of worry - worry beliefsBelief 1 - being a worrier as a positive identityBelief 2 - worrying helps in feeling more in controlBelief 3 - worry prevents negative outcomesBelief 4 - worrying is uncontrollableCognitive defusion and unhooking from worrySpecific defusion strategiesMore free downloads and resources to support your mental health and wellbeing: https://www.harleyclinical.co.uk/free-mental-health-downloadable-guidesJoin our email list for more mental health tips: https://mailchi.mp/harleyclinical/newsletter-sign-upFor private psychology services and therapy in person (London/Hertfordshire) or online, please visit Harley Clinical Psychology.*****************Subscribe to our YouTube channelFollow Harley Clinical on InstagramFollow Dr Liz White on InstagramFollow Dr Liz White on TikTok*****************DISCLAIMER - The Hello Therapy podcast and the information provided by Dr Liz White (DClinPsy, CPsychol, AFBPsS, CSci, HCPC reg.), is solely intended for informational and educational purposes and does not constitute personalised advice. Welcome to the Relationship Maze podcast, where we explore the complexities of the human experience. In today's episode we talk about the advantages and disadvantages of having a mental health diagnosis. In daily language many people refer to themselves or others as having a personality disorder - often very serious presentations are bandied about quite flippantly. Presentations can also be weaponised by one partner over the other, i.e. 'The only problem here is your Borderline Personality Disorder'. Personality Disorders as described in the DSM-5 are wide ranging and include Generalised Anxiety Disorder or Depression, for example. The DSM-5 is the standard classification manual for all mental health disorders for adults and children in the US. The other manual that health care professionals refer to, in particular in Europe, is the ICD-10.It can be very helpful to finally find out that the challenges that you face fall within cluster of presentations that are recognised as creating difficulties in your life; by the same token a diagnosis can also mean that you feel stuck - and often helpless - in a particular identity. We discuss -who can diagnose a personality disorder or schizophrenia -what an assessment might look like -the challenges with diagnosing a mental health condition -the advantages of getting a diagnosis -the disadvantages of getting a diagnosis -the DSM V vs other models such as The Power Threat Meaning Framework -What is your argument style? Find out in our short quiz. You can find a link on our website: https://therelationshipmaze.com.Struggling with a lot of conflict and arguments in your relationship? Meg Webb's Generalised Anxiety Disorder started young and originally presented as constant worrying. It was incredibly difficult, but not a symptom others would notice. The anxiety she was struggling with eventually became more conspicuous during a high school presentation when her hands began to tremble uncontrollably. Later, in her first job, she experienced daily dread that she'd be asked to do something that would mean her colleagues would notice her shaking. She wouldn't eat or drink in social situations and eventually found them all too difficult. Eventually, Meg self-medicated with alcohol, which only made her anxiety worse. In her 40s, she became curious about sobriety and embarked on a journey that not only freed her from alcohol but also reduced her overall anxiety. This newfound freedom led Meg to discover her purpose as an Alcohol Recovery Coach.Meg works with women in their midlife who are wanting to find a freedom from alcohol, and uses tools for this and for reducing anxiety in their life, and also for finding their joy and passion. She is a certified This Naked Mind coach, a nutrition coach and a teacher's aide for children with autism. She also previously worked as a photographer but now enjoys photography as a hobby. What is it like to be an Autistic woman? What are the signs of Autism in girls? What is dating like for an Autistic woman? Taylor Heaton (@taylor_heaton_) is the owner of the popular Autism YouTube channel Mom On The Spectrum which is closing on 40k subscribers at the time of recording. Taylor also coordinates peer support groups and does group and 1-2-1 coaching with Autistic clients across the globe. Taylor's Links - https://linktr.ee/momonthespectrum // My Links - https://linktr.ee/thomashenleyUK Diagnosed at 31 with Autism, as well as ADHD and Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Taylor goes into the reasons she started her YouTube channel and how being open on the internet helped her accept and explore her own diagnosis. They kick off the conversation they dive deep into their experiences at high school, being overachievers and subject to bullying in school, they talk about the manipulation and social harassment they experienced from neurotypical women in their schools. Taylor explains the issues around puberty, particularly the emotional, hormonal and physical changes to women's bodies that can really aggravate someone sensory-wise. Mom On The Spectrum talks about her experience of social expectations as a woman in Texas, being expected to host, cater and open her house to people in the area - something I think many Autistic people would find overwhelming. She goes on to talk about the tendency of other women to gossip about others, and how uncomfortable it made her feel to be a part of it. Maintaining friendships and relationships can be a difficult task for many autistic individuals, especially with a neurotypical partner who doesn't understand the ins and outs of Autism. Thomas and Taylor highlight the issue of managing your own social battery with the needs of people in their lives. Neurodiverse relationships and dating provide a whole host of difficulties... struggling to navigate flirting, reading cues of interest, managing physical touch needs and double empathy. They both agree that all relationships require lots of communication, but neurodiverse relationships may require a lot more work from both sides. Could psychadelics help treat anxiety? In a world first, researchers in Melbourne are investigating whether psilocybin, the naturally occurring compound in magic mushrooms, will be effective in treating Generalised Anxiety Disorder. Back in August 2022, Sam asked Dr Paul Liknaitzky, Head of Clinical Psychedelic Research at Monash University, what psilocybin is, and how it can help if you're struggling with mental ill health. Sara administers herself a clinical assessment tool that helps support clinical treatment of BPD. She talks about how she would score BEFORE medication management and DBT and how she scores now! The Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) is an instrument measuring emotion regulation problems. The 36 items self-report scale asks respondents how they relate to their emotions. This tool can be especially useful in helping patients identify areas for growth in how they respond to their emotions, especially those with Borderline Personality Disorder, Generalised Anxiety Disorder or Substance Use Disorder.Information on the tool and the tool itself can be found here: https://novopsych.com.au/assessments/formulation/difficulties-in-emotion-regulation-scale/ Support the showYou can find Laurie and Sara on Instagram to follow their day to day lives even further @laurieanned and @saraswellnessway. My name is Siobhan. I'm 13 and I'm the founder and owner of Our Pixie Friends. I was born at 27 weeks - that's 3 months early! I weighed 843g and I was being resuscitated 3-4 times a day until I had open heart surgery when I was about 1 month old. As a consequence, I have a range of medical conditions, including bowel/bladder dysfunction, sensory processing disorder (dyspraxia) and NVLD - Nonverbal Learning Disorder. I also have allergies, anaphylaxis, eczema, asthma, and surprise, surprise- Generalised Anxiety Disorder! I have also experienced PTSD, depression/obsessive thoughts and had suicidal tendencies after some medication. I used to think, "Why am I the only kid with all this?" I'd get upset when other kids didn't want to hold my hand in line, or their parents wouldn't invite me over because they were afraid I'd have a medical emergency. When I was 6, I realised I wasn't the only kid in the world with medical conditions and I decided I would start a business to help other kids not feel alone and isolated, and encourage other kids to be kind and inclusive. That's when Our Pixie Friends was born. On a trip to the allergist for another round of scary skin prick testing, I brainstormed all my ideas, and by the time I came home, I had an outline of my website, ideas for books and merchandise, and a dream of raising $1 million for medical research and one day having my pixie characters in ambulances so kids experiencing trauma have one of Our Pixie Friends with them. Mum didn't know how to help me, so she just encouraged me to write my ideas down. It wasn't until I was 10 that I finally met a wonderful lady, Sharron Pountney from SLP Consulting, who said she would help me. She registered my companies when I was 10. In July last year, phase one of my website was launched (and I was notified that the character blogs on the website would be added to the Radio Lollipop global playlist for kids in hospital all over the world) and my first book was published. I have 2 more books coming out this year, and I have been working with a haematologist at the Sydney Children's Hospital to develop a pixie with a bleeding disorder (who should be appearing on the website soon). I have also been invited to a number of speaking events including author talks and creative character development workshops at schools, the YES Summit, where I was on the panel to help over 400 high school students and I will be speaking at a Redlands Women in Business event in September. But the best part of my life is when I have an impact on young children. I love seeing their faces light up and hearing how my ideas are helping them.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Do I have generalised anxiety disorder? Generalised anxiety disorder is a psychological condition, which affects around 3% of all people, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. But it seems to affect certain groups disproportionately. For example, women are twice as likely to be affected as men. Furthermore, less than half of people with GAD receive treatment. What are the symptoms I should be looking out for? What's the best way to go about seeking treatment? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions ! In this episode of the podcast, I have the pleasure of interviewing Steph Fleeton. Steph is an Aware Parenting Instructor and mum to 2 boys. She is the founder of Spirited Hearts Natural Learning Haven, a family day care that is built on the foundations of Aware Parenting principles and is a home away from home. It is a safe, nurturing, joyful space where each child is accepted for the beautiful, unique individual that they are. We talk about the challenges of learning to hold space to listen to big feelings and to use Attachment Play in parenting. Steph describes how her day care center uses a holistic approach to support families with Aware Parenting, including loving limits, listening to and releasing feelings and play to support the children in her care. She talks about how she explains this approach to parents, builds trust and normalizes the expression of big feelings. Steph also shares honestly and with great self-compassion how she has coped with her son being diagnosed with ADHD and Generalised Anxiety Disorder. She describes how she has needed to be creative and finely tuned in to her child in order to use the tools of Aware Parenting to meet his unique needs. She talks about how to get support for how hard it is and how isolating it can feel to parent a child with a diagnosis and describes how beautiful, intense, difficult and powerful it is. We talk about how to see each child as a unique individual and to meet them where they are at in each moment. To learn more about Steph, please visit https://spiritedhearts.net/ . In this episode, we talk with a guest, Steph Fleeton, who is an Aware Parenting Instructor. We asked Steph to join us after receiving messages recently asking about practicing Aware Parenting when a child has a diagnosis such as ADHD or Autism. Steph has a long background in early childhood education and daycare and also has two sons, the eldest of whom has a diagnosis of ADHD and Generalised Anxiety Disorder. In the podcast, Steph shared about her experience of practicing Aware Parenting with her son as well as with the children that come into her care. We felt so touched listening to Steph share about deeply connecting with each child and their uniqueness. Steph also shared about her journey of her son getting diagnosed and the impact the diagnosis has on how other adults are towards him. Anxiety has been a huge part of my life. I was diagnosed with Generalised Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder when I was 11yo and it set me on quite a journey. When it wasn't present in my life it did continue to lurk in the background and show up in other ways without even realising. Anxiety takes on many forms in our lives – "the shapeshifter". Over the past 6 months I have done some deep emotional healing and learnt it's not about battling anxiety but understanding and working with it. There's a lot to learn about anxiety and in this episode I chat with a pro when it comes to this topic. Georgie Collinson, also known as "Georgie the Naturopath" is a bachelor-degree qualified naturopath, nutritionist, RTT hypnotherapist and mindset coach helping women with high-functioning anxiety to become the masters of their anxious mind. Georgie is also the host of the “Anxiety Reset Podcast” which I highly recommend. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did. Simon recollects his feeling when he got his first full time role in high performance sports, which was also his dream role. He shares his experiences going through such an intense schedule as he transitioned from one job to another while also studying at the same time, and how he was hurting mentally because of it. He also shares how his dedication and hardship during that time was worth it, and he wouldn't change much as it was for his dream role. He reflects on how he would have regretted it if it was all for something that he really didn't care about. Now, he is in the opposite in terms of his own mental health, even in a lockdown. Simon also talks about the balance he has achieved with working at the Sydney Kings and working at the clinic through the NBL club and how fortunate he is for that. He details the difference between treating athletes and treating the people within the general population who take time out of their day to come and see him. Simon shares how he deals with his Generalised Anxiety Disorder, and how feeling anxious is a daily occurrence for him. He describes how he overthinks things on such a large scale compared the someone who is neurotypical. He lives his life by controlling the controllable, which is a great mantra to live by. He also uses small wins throughout his day to give him small boosts both at home and within his workplace. https://www.zone34.com.au/portfolio/simon_hall/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/simon-hall-5640b6102/?originalSubdomain=au simon_the_physio simonhallphysio@gmail.com

Today, I'm talking to Thomas Henley – passionate autism advocate, public speaker and online content creator. Thomas has his own podcast (the Thoughty Auti podcast- all things autism and mental health) – he is also a YouTuber and Documentary creator. And that's all in his spare time, as Thomas is also a Business & Event Project manager for a non-profit organisation. Amazingly, Thomas is a former Commonwealth Championship Taekwondo Gold medalist, and owner of the ‘Best Male Fighter' trophy for his heavyweight bouts. Diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome at age 10, and then partnering with the charity, Anna Kennedy Online, Thomas became an autism advocate in his early 20's. He openly shares that he suffers from meltdowns, panic attacks, Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Binge Eating Disorder, and Severe Depression. Despite his struggles, he has developed strong social and communication skills, and achieved an honours degree in Biomedical Science (UoM), has taught in SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) teaching, has extensive traveling experience, and developed his video and audio skills independently. Thomas is an incredibly inspiring human! In this interview, we talk about a whole range of different topics. Thomas talks through his personal story of struggling with his own mental health issues, including having bulimia as a child, this then morphing into binge eating disorder as an adult. He shares about his diagnosis with Asperger's Syndrome at aged 10 and more about the role of how autism interplays with eating disorders and interoception. He also addresses stigma around males having eating disorders and the impact of sport and eating disorders, when there is pressure to be a certain weight or size. This is an episode to truly inspire and encourage people on their journey. I hope that you enjoy it. To find out more about Thomas: - https://thomashenley.co.uk/

In this episode I discuss my mental health diagnosis (initially with Post-Natal Depression and then with Generalised Anxiety Disorder.) Being diagnosed with a strange experience, it changes nothing and every thing. Here I discuss my initial reactions to the diagnosis and what I then went and did about it with my usual level of skin-off honesty.

Assistance dogs are making a big difference in the lives of many people, including Maree Bendeich, who shares her experience with training an assistance dog for her daughter in this podcast episode. Maree’s daughter was diagnosed with Autism and Generalised Anxiety Disorder at a young age. Maree believed that an assistance dog would be a great way to help her daughter build confidence and even give her a reason to speak and interact with others around her. When Atlas, an adorable Autism Assistance Dog in the making, became part of the family, Maree knew she made the right decision. The process for training an assistance dog can be challenging and costly, but Maree believes the benefits and rewards far outweigh any of this. As a lover of dogs, Maree talks about the benefits of animal assisted therapy and how you can start your journey with an assistance dog. Want to be on the podcast or reach out? Go here. Welcome back to the walk a mile in my shoes podcast. I'm your host, Chris Young, and in this episode we'll be walking a mile in the shoes of the author and mental health activist, Lucy Nichol. Among other things, we talk about her attempt to reach beyond the usual ‘Mental Health' audiences, through her memoir ‘A series of unfortunate stereotypes' which delivers the serious message of mental health stigma in a humorous way; and through her novel, ‘the Twenty Seven club' where she once again, slips the mental health conversation under the radar in a ‘Darkly comic tale of friendship, hope and fandom'. As ever, I'd be delighted if you'd subscribe, rate and/ or write a review for the show. As well as giving me a warm fuzzy feeling inside, it'll mean the podcast will reach more folk. You can follow her on twitter here @LucyENichol You can follow me on Twitter here @walkamileuk or, if Facebook's more your thing, you can join our rather delightful group here Until the next time, I've been Chris Young and you've been rather lovely, Walk a mile

When Angela took part in her first charity running race, she had no idea how much running would impact her life. After realising that her mental health and Generalised Anxiety Disorder improved with the more running she did, she soon began to embrace her runs and started applying for more races. Since then she's gone on to complete several races (including the London Marathon) and raised money for a range of different charities. In this episode, Angela shares her running journey and talks openly about how running has positively impacted her own mental health. Could procrastination be a symptom of your anxiety? Is it really procrastination or a nagging feeling that's guilting you for not enjoying yourself when necessary? Did you ever consider that the disordered thinking that occurs when we’re anxious is because of the low level threat response occurring in our bodies? Generalised Anxiety Disorder (or GAD) is the diagnosis of chronic anxiety. Every human on the planet has felt anxious, but anxiety disorder is when our threat response runs out of control like a faulty fire alarm. Having “I should…” thoughts or self-criticism can be healthy in small doses, but when that thinking gets out of control, it can just lead to more confusion. It’s not good to be self-sabotaging your decision making like a well-intentioned but overly critical family member. There are even times when the feeling of being in control of your life can become addictive, and the evidence is seen by our friends and family when darker behaviours like depression, addiction, over/under-spending, over/under-eating, or angry outbursts emerge. It doesn’t cease so long as we continue to validate an anxious response by responding to the feeling of being threatened. It can take some experimenting along your own personal journey to find what works for you among the long list of solutions: exercise, meditation, diet, medication, removing yourself from external situations like an abusive partner, friend, or family member, or changing your own habits with the help of a therapist. In this episode, Josh and Ella chat about Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD). In this episode, we discuss Meredith's journey with Generalised Anxiety Disorder and how she's managed to take control of it using an array of tools and strategies as well as her equally brilliant and hilarious catchphrases! “It’s okay to make mistakes. We’re supposed to make mistakes. No one is expected to be perfect.”Ever since I’ve known Paul, he’s always worked incredibly hard towards his aim of becoming a therapist. He was one of the few people when we were at university who had a very clear goal in his mind of what he wanted to do and actually stuck with it; getting numerous qualifications, doing volunteer work and moving around the UK to finally become fully qualified.Paul’s line of work has always fascinated me and I thought it was a perfect time, given the huge surge in mental health awareness and the tragic increase in suicide rates and loneliness, to speak with him about what he sees on a day-to-day basis, as well as any advice he can bring to the table for people either going through their own mental health problems, or those who need reassurance in speaking to someone.I find Paul’s words really reassuring when we talk about emotions, especially when he describes how some emotions are often put into a ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bucket. Of course a range of emotions is necessary for day-to-day living. We can’t be happy all the time, it’s unnatural to be so – but often in today’s society, especially with social media showing a one-sided or, in some cases, completely fictitious, view of someone’s life, we forget that sadness, grief and anger are all necessary and natural emotions to feel. It’s also interesting to hear how, as a therapist, Paul’s job isn’t to help people get rid of certain types of emotions, but learn to process and accept them. One of the terms he uses that will really stick with me is around us learning to have a better relationship with our emotions, rather than just numbing them. I hope you find my conversation with Paul useful. I’ve dropped some links below in case you wanted to do some further research or are suffering with any of the issues that we discuss. None of the links below should ever compensate in speaking with your GP or doctor. Tonight I'm thrilled to be heading up to beautiful Northumberland to talk to Farmer and writer, Sally Urwin @PintSizedFarmer We start off by talking about the book she's written about her farming life (due out in April!), how it all came about, and the whole writing process, before moving on to chat about her early life growing up in North Tyneside by the sea. We hear about the 'immensely boring office job' she did after University, and how eventually, in the early days of internet dating & after searching for a 'man under 5'8' who lived in the countryside', she met her future husband, Steve. We talk about her early days on the farm, and how much she had to learn, before we discuss their diversification into a brewery and wedding venue, and some of the difficulties it caused them. We talk about 2018, and what a difficult year it's been for them, which led, with Steve having lost his part time job in January, and financial pressure building, to them contacting the charity RABI, and receiving financial help. We also hear about her Generalised Anxiety Disorder, what it is, and how she copes with it, partly with the help of some awesome drugs! All this, and much, much more. Sally's one of my favourite people to follow on social media, not only because she's incredibly funny, but because she's so honest about her farming life, and it was an absolute pleasure to talk to her tonight. If you're a new parent and you're finding it much more work and a lot less fun than you thought it would be, you're really going to gain a lot from this show. Today, in the first episode, Tom explains that his idea for the show came from his own experience as a father of four children and the juxtaposition of two books, Jennifer Senior's All Joy And No Fun and Bruce Feiler's The Secrets Of Happy Families. Listen in discover how you can live a happy life, even though you have children. Today, Tom explains that Jennifer Senior's book is about the phenomenon that parents generally score lower on happiness surveys, when compared with people without children and that this flies in the face of the common belief that having children is the crowning achievement in life. Ms. Senior profiles parents who struggle with expectations placed on them, often by themselves, to raise well-adjusted children, with increasingly fewer available resources, such as time, money, or a network of support from family. Thomas points out that the book does, however, have a silver lining, in that most parents do experience a significant amount of joy and meaning in their lives, due to having children. Bruce Feiler's book, on the other hand, points to some possible solutions to the dilemma of parenting. He looks to the lessons learned in business and in other fields, to see if these methods can be used to teach families to function better. He gives an example from the book, of a family who adopted the use of agile management, a project management tool used in the software industry, to help with family meetings and to streamline the hectic morning routine. Tom says that he hasn't managed to replicate agile management in his house, however, he does dream! Today, Tom tells you what you can expect to hear in his future episodes and he explains that although solutions are great, at times, it really helps just to know that the problems faced by parents are both common and survivable. Listen in today, as Thomas shares his own parenting story by reading the relevant chapter from his book, You're Pregnant, You're Fired. Some highlights include: How he was offered a position as an Assistant to the US Attorney for the District of Columbia, in 2005, when he was thirty-three years old, married and had a ten-month-old son. How little idea he had, prior to the birth of his son, of how much work it would involve to be a parent. Sharing the responsibilities of parenting with his wife, who was also an attorney. Their dog, Sawyer, who had health problems and added to the stress of parenting. His decision to spend as much time as possible with his son. His joining the US Attorney's Office in the fall of 2006 – a harrowing situation for all new prosecutor's, given the long hours and stress. The stress of coming home to a strung out kid and a stressed out wife, after a demanding day at work. His battle with insomnia. How his own routine became more extreme. He was learning a lot, but it was difficult. The birth of his second son, Jonah. How unprepared he was for having two children- no one ever got a break! Being diagnosed with Generalised Anxiety Disorder. That no one at work knew what he was going through. A survey that showed that men with families have it easier than women with families do, in the workplace, yet men tend to be more heavily penalized for taking time off work. His realization that he could no longer maintain the way he was working, trying to balance work and family. His work move to a less stressful situation and his coming down with respiratory tract infection. Opening his own firm and dealing with the guilt of his departure from the US Attorney's office- in the midst of an economic meltdown. His realization that it was having children that had made his balancing act so difficult. Making the choice- career or family? The lack of support by the government, for working families and policy matters that are worth debating in this regard. Link: Tom's website: www.spigglelaw.com/podcast
