(May 2021) Gil is a world renowned drummer who shares his deep passion and knowledge for Reggae drumming in this great episode. He takes us through all the sub genres such as ska, rocksteady, dub, and dancehall. Plus he teaches us about the legends in Reggae drumming such as Lloyd Knibb and Carlton Barrett and the gear that these Jamaican drummers would use when playing with icons such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Lee Perry and many more. Here is some more info on Gil: Los Angeles native, Gil Sharone, is highly regarded as one of the most versatile session and touring drummers in the world, who is known for his creativity, authenticity and strong pocket. He is a multiple-time industry award winner as a drummer, but will often wear other hats as a co-writer, producer, and an educator/clinician. Gil came to notoriety in the rock world as a former member of The Dillinger Escape Plan, Puscifer, Marilyn Manson, Stolen Babies and Team Sleep. However, he is widely known as an expert in other genres. Reggae, ska and rocksteady were part of his earliest influences along with jazz, funk, hip hop and fusion. Gil has established himself in the Jamaican drumming styles, authoring an award winning DVD and book entitled Wicked Beats, after playing with legends Eek-A-Mouse, HR of Bad Brains, Dave Wakeling of The English Beat, Fishbone, Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra and more recently with Slightly Stoopid, Morgan Heritage, and his current reggae/dub outfit, Gil, Migs and Rog. Gil is also an active member of a genre bending music collective, Saudade, where you can hear his jazz fusion collaborations with jazz greats John Medeski, David Torn, Robert Thomas Jr., Dr. Know and Chuck Doom. Gil's work further extends into the film/television world, working with composers Tyler Bates and Paul Haslinger. His work can be heard in Deadpool 2, Guardians of The Galaxy 2, all three John Wick movies, The Punisher (Netflix), Kingdom and Stumptown. He has also contributed both as a player and co-writer on the DC Comics: Dark Nights Metal Soundtrack, and his most recent work can be heard in the musical score for the live action Cirque du Soleil show, R.U.N.

Composer Paul Haslinger sits down for a brand new Film.Music.Media conversation! Paul takes us back through his amazing career in music from his time with Tangerine Dream, moving to Los Angeles and exploring other avenues of music, and eventually focusing on a career as a composer for film and TV. We explore what it was like to be an electronic musician in the 80's and how those working with synths and electronics were shunned in the composing community. Paul talks about several of his projects including the Underworld films, Crazy/Beautiful, Crank, Shoot 'Em Up, and more! We also dive into his newest score for The YouTube Effect. The documentary directed by Alex Winter explores how YouTube has left a troubling legacy on how it has impacted society as a whole. Paul talks about his unique approach to scoring the film, and why he did not want to go the conventional route. While the score was written for the film, the stylings and structure of the album allow it to stand on its own almost as its own experience. You can listen to the album from Node Records on all digital platforms. Paul is one of the pioneers of electronic music, and his music has left a lasting impact through all the amazing scores and albums he's composed throughout his career. A Film.Music.Media Production | Produced & Presented by Kaya Savas

It’s been a crazy spring/summer here in Oz, after all the fires & drought, the rains came, fires out but now the floods, landslides & extensive beach erosion, especially in New South Wales & Victoria. Heaviest falls in 30 years, some having a years worth in 48 hours & more to come. Let's look on the bright side we still have some storming music for you and I must omit it’s a very diverse selection. Philippe is a composer of new age music & ambient electro in the line of Jean-Michel Jarre, Vangelis & Era. Ex Tangerine Dream players Paul Haslinger and Peter Baumann new self-titled album Neuland. Exciting melodies and detailed subtleties of Mikael Fyrek. Through cosmic vortexes & comet zones the synthetic neo-kraut vessel E-Musikgruppe-lux-Ohr. Drawing influences from vintage ambient synth libraries, New Age/spiritual music and menacing horror film canon from Stateside Steve Moore, elements of genres as diverse as jazz post-rock and even classical can be heard playing their part in this original mind-bending tapestry by Yodok III, with many more simultaneously exquisite and deceptively unsettling music from our lineup. From the ladies, Internationally acclaimed harpist Kirsten Agresta, with beautiful introspective melodies and ambient soundscapes, modular exploration from sound designer Helene Vogelsinger, French composer Delphine Tesla with etherial bells chimes and atmospheric sounds, Irma Orm known as Demen, using her voice coolly calmly swathed in reverb with dark cavernous tones and slow rhythms which surround and envelop her & finally Dora Gaitanovici soaring voices against the mighty spacious filling chords of Thy Veils founder Daniel Dorobantu. Vintage tracks take us back to 1981 with Earthstar’s second album, Atomkraft Nein Danke! from the original vinyl version. As we all huddle around the fireplace to escape the wintery weather this week, what better way to pass the time, than to pop on Geektown Radio and catch up with the latest tv news, film info, and listen to an exclusive interview with composer Michael Wandmacher!Michael is an American composer of music for film, television, and video games. His work is an interesting eclectic mix of genres, from films such as 'Drive Angry', ‘Piranha 3D’, ‘Punisher: War Zone’, and 'Ben 10: Alien Swarm' to tv shows such as 'Imaginary Mary', and ‘Night Stalker’ to games like ‘Bloodborne’, and ‘Twisted Metal’. His latest 2 projects are equally polar opposites, as his main tv show day job is providing the music for 80’s period sitcom ‘The Goldbergs’, whilst his latest movie project is ‘Underworld: Blood Wars’, which he takes over from composers Paul Haslinger and Marco Beltrami. If working in tv, film and gaming wasn’t enough, Michael also performs as remixer under the pseudonym "Khursor", remixing popular songs into more cinematic versions for use on tv and film. Below is an example of a remix he did for Sting's ‘Every Breath You Take’, which was featured on the trailer for the 3rd season of 'The Americans'.Also On This Week's Show:We coax Bex out of winter hibernation to chat about the tv shows and films we've been watching including 'The Grand Tour', the 'Crisis On Earth X' DC crossover, and... I'm sure by now that most of you have seen or heard about the TV show "Stranger Things" on Netflix. If you haven't seen it, definitely check it out. It totally rips off Close Encounters, ET, Poltergeist, Stand By Me, Firestarter, etc. but it doesn't matter because it's ripping them off in a loving way. The same is true for the soundtrack. It's got a great analog synth sound reminiscent of Tangerine Dream and John Carpenter soundtracks. The minute I heard the Stranger Things theme I knew I had to make a mix featuring the new retro sound. Even though the music in this mix sounds like it's from the 70s or 80s all of it is new, with most cuts being from 2015 & 2016. In addition to the Stranger Things theme I of course had to include the Tangerine Dream remix of it. Thanks to Mike of Ambient Music Guide for the heads up on the soundtrack from Halt & Catch Fire by Paul Haslinger. It's fantastic! Another soundtrack that made it's way into the mix is from Mac Quayle music for Mr. Robot - more analog loveliness. I hope everyone enjoys the mix, I know had a ball putting it together. Cheers!
