Fast food workers in California are seeing an increase in their paychecks. This is because of a recent minimum wage law that went into effect earlier this month. The law requires fast food chains like McDonald's and Starbucks to pay workers $20 per hour. It will also affect restaurants that have at least 60 other locations nationwide. Opponents of the law say it will lead to layoffs and store closures . . . but for fast food workers who have been fighting for better pay, this could mean being able to get a decent living wage. Fast Company Staff Writer Pavithra Mohan joined us to unpack it all. For more on this, check out Pavithra's reporting. Then we chatted with Lyft CEO David Risher about taking over the company after cofounders Logan Green and John Zimmer left a year ago, having to lay off more than a quarter of the company's workforce last April, and focusing on his key strategy: “customer obsession drives profitable growth.” We also discussed the company's future in Minneapolis, whether self-driving cars will transform the industry, and what Risher learned heading up U.S. retail at Amazon under Jeff Bezos.

Notes: 00:00:53:03- What is ‘state capacity?' What does it mean to hollow out state capacity? 00:05:33:02- How did the Brahmin elite hollow out the bureaucracy in the Bombay and Madras Presidencies at the time the Indian state was being democratised? 00:10:48:07- How does this play out in India even today?00:13:26:14- What makes right-wing political parties popular among the poor?00:18:21:16- What role does people's income play in voter turnout in India?00:19:54:23- Why are caste and class so relevant when it comes to voting and politics in India?00:22:53:17- Why does India see a huge proliferation of various political parties across states? 00:27:55:02- In the recent 2021 West Bengal elections, almost all news sites' pre-poll data predicted that the BJP would win, which turned out to be wrong when the All India Trinamool Congress won by a landslide. Where does the mismatch between voters' attitudes and perceptions of the media come from?

It’s been about two weeks since India rolled out its Covid vaccination drive against the ongoing pandemic. While the current priority is to provide these vaccines to health professionals and other front line workers, many regular folk are either awaiting to take the shot or would like to delay it. And the questions over the administering of Covaxin vaccine (by Bharath Biotech) to the general public before completing it’s Phase III clinical trial has added to this confusion and anxiety. The other vaccine available is Covishield (by Serum Institute of India), which has completed all the three phases of clinical trials. In this special episode, I discuss with Dr. Pavithra Venkatagopalan, a virologist whose specialisation has been in the field of coronoviruses and has spent many years studying the virus. She is also the director of Care Health Diagnostic Lab. Dr. Pavithra outlines the differences between both the vaccines, the ongoing concerns over Covaxin and the doubts people often have before getting the shot. Embarking on a research degree is an incredibly exciting experience. Yet it can also be very daunting. Even at the best of times, research work is physically, emotionally, and psychologically demanding. For research candidates with mental health struggles and different learning needs, this high-pressure environment is not easy to navigate. In this episode, Florence interviews Antoinette Pavithra (Pavi), a PhD candidate and research assistant at Macquarie University's Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI). With tenacity, good humour, and compassion, Pavi reflects on her own tumultuous journey as an international student and research candidate, and where she finds courage and resilience in challenging times. She also shares her on-the-ground initiatives to set up support networks for fellow candidates with mental health issues and invisible disabilities.Pavi's current research explores the theoretical and practical factors that influence the efficacy of culture change interventions within healthcare systems. She has previously conducted and assisted with research using mixed methods to understand and map far-right extremism within Australia, clinical and surgical communication between healthcare professionals and patients, mental health wearable device deployment and use, and the construction of Aboriginal identity through commercial state-driven and community-run tourism initiatives in Australia. Pavi has also worked with students internationally and in Australia, tutoring, mentoring, coaching and lecturing across units in English Literature and Medical Anthropology. Her research interests span healthcare systems practices, patient safety, digital healthcare, human-technology assemblages, mental health, justice and society, and open knowledge production practices. To get in touch with Pavi about her current support initiatives, contact her at: antoinette.pavithra@mq.edu.au Articles on invisible disabilities and higher education: The Road to Higher Education With an 'Invisible Disability': https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2016/09/there-is-no-right-way-to-learn/501044/ 'Invisible' disabilities campaign calls on community to 'think outside the chair': https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-12-06/think-outside-the-chair-invisible-disabilities-campaign/10567322 Resources and supports: https://www.disabilityaustraliahub.com.au/invisible-disability/http://www.asan-au.org/ https://www.neurodiversityhub.org/https://thinkoutsidethechair.com.au/join-the-movement/Music by Ketsa, Nature Shuffle, Free Music Archive

Textiles are the second most polluting industry worldwide. Yet, responsibility for sustainability is bandied about between consumers, businesses, not-for-profits, and governments. Today I have Pavithra Dikshit with us on Audiogyan. She is a typographer, Graphic designer and presently working in Landor, Mumbai. And this is the way she positions herself online, I’m 1/3rd of Postcard People which is an avenue to revive sending out postcards. And I’m 1/8th of Kadak which is a collective of South Asian women who work with graphic storytelling of different kinds. Today we are here to talk about graphic design with Pavithra. Questions 1. You say your exploration in design is within Indian context. What do you mean by that? What is Indianness when it comes to graphic design? 2. How big and wide is the canvas with respect to Indian Graphic Design? 3. Can graphic design be tactile in nature? What is the role of paper when it comes to graphic design? How critical is that element? Since I am always exposed to digital graphic design? 4. In some of your articles online, you have mentioned about you being super disciplined and lover of side projects. What can be different ways for a graphic designer to explore side projects? 5. So there is a connection between your work, life and work-life? How does your day job work in this sense? 6. How do you choose what you should work on? Especially with side projects. Everybody has so many ideas? You seem to have built a few composite projects, why is that? Is that a style? 7. A lot of your recent work involves words and typography. Could you talk about it? Also you’re reading and sharing a lot more of the books. Have you always been a reader? Is that important for a graphic designer in today’s world?
