She currently serves as co-Chair of the American Astronomical Society's Committee to Protect Astronomy and the Space Environment (COMPASSE). Professor Venkatesan has been recognized internationally for her research and DEI leadership, featured widely in the media, and received numerous prizes and awards. She is deeply committed to increasing the retention of underrepresented groups in astronomy and STEM, and is active in developing scientific partnerships with Indigenous communities worldwide. To be an effective leader you need to consciously manage yourself to build your company culture and foster your team into making the right decisions. One of the key things Ravi focuses on is looking for opportunities for new talent and unlocking potential in existing team members. Too frequently leaders ignore people's potential but if we can engage team members and inspire them, we can get so much more, for them and for the company. All companies have a collective consciousness made up of their employees, partners and clients. If leaders can tap into this consciousness and influence it, then it will also have an impact on performance as a whole. My guest this week is a self-proclaimed “recovering consultant” with a love for technology and an eye for connectivity. Cantaloupe CEO Ravi Venkatesan joined Cantaloupe in December 2020 with a path for progress that's already dominating their industry sector.For those of you who may not know, Cantaloupe is the technology ally for any business that “doesn't have roots in the ground,” according to Ravi. This includes unattended cafeterias, vending machines, parking lots, EV charging stations, laundromats, and self-service massage chairs, just to name a few. And one of the things that makes them such a main player in the industry is there IoT capacity. Not only do they provide the telemeter and card reader necessary to enable a self-service storefront, but they also have all devices connected to a proprietary cloud network, with a proprietary payments gateway and an enterprise SaaS solution that lets any customer successfully manage their inventory input and output. And, as if that wasn't enough already, they just recently got into the self-service kiosk-based market with their recent acquisition of Yoke Payments.Ravi and I have an interesting discussion about the self-service economy. Not only is it much more prevalent than we think it is, but it's also expected to grow to be a $46 billion industry by 2027. He is also UNICEF's Special Representative for Young People and Innovation, and the Founder of the Global Alliance for Mass Entrepreneurship (GAME). He serves on the Boards of Rockefeller Foundation, Hitachi Ltd.   Ravi was the Chairman of Microsoft India, Bank of Baroda and Cummins India, and served as a co-chairman of Infosys Ltd. He is an alum of IIT Bombay and Harvard Business School. Ravi is the author of What The Heck Do I Do With My Life: How To Flourish In Our Turbulent Times and Conquering the Chaos: Win in India, Win Everywhere. He was voted as one of India's best management thinkers by Thinkers50 and as Microsoft's Alumni Hero 2020.   Under Venkatesan's leadership between 2004 and 2011, India became Microsoft's second-largest geographic area and one of its fastest growing markets. It used to be that developing markets suffered because they didn't have physical bank branches. And as a result, a lot of innovation sought to find workarounds that the developed markets just didn't need.
