Sant Jordi is a Catalan cultural celebration held on April 23. It's Catalonia's Valentine's Day and it served as the inspiration for World Book Day. Couples, friends, and families give each other gifts of roses and books, commemorating the legendary slaying of the dragon by Sant Jordi - Saint George, in English. In this week's podcast, we delve into Catalan literature and analyze its translation into English. Host Beth Cohen sits down with reporter Cillian Shields to discuss the origins of the Sant Jordi celebration and its evolution over time. Cillian meets Peter Bush and Laura McGloughlin, two of the most notable contemporary Catalan-to-English translators, who reflect on what it means to translate a novel and explain their approach to the task. Both review some of their most iconic translations, including the works of Josep Pla, Emili Teixidor, Toni Hill, and Bel Olid, while discussing current trends and emerging voices in Catalan literature. Cillian and Beth wrap up by sharing some of their favorite reads by Catalan authors and exchanging book recommendations for this year's Sant Jordi. This week, our Catalan phrase is “Un llibre és com un jardí que es porta a la butxaca,” a proverb of Arabic origin that translates as “A book is like a garden carried in your pocket.” Just like a garden, books are full of life and beautiful details - but small enough to keep with you wherever you go.

Everyone needs love. Everyone is potentially able to love; yet, especially in our fast-paced era, a time of uneasiness and uncertainty, not everyone understands love. Love may often be accompanied by pervasive feelings of insecurity. Multiple dating and matchmaking websites have emerged to take advantage of people's anxieties around love. Striking, around the streets of Paris, are eye-catching advertisements with words such as “Get love without chance!” or “Be in love without falling in love!” They are produced by Meetic, the largest dating website in Europe. The message they try to convey is direct, “Come on, we can offer you a guarantee of love.” Yes, Meetic promise to offer you “coaching in love”. You may agree, this sounds attractive, right? They will provide you with all the information you need to precisely sift out the person you want for your ideal love interest, such as their photo, date of birth, hobbies, and zodiac sign. The proposal appears uncomplicated, safe, effortless even, meeting your expectations and needs of an appropriate person for your feelings and affections. However, in the public interview that is the source of this book, Alain Badiou states that drawing on his 71 years of life experience, such a view of love is wrong. So, what is love from Badiou's point of view? Are there other incorrect views of love? And how do people find true love? In unlocking the book In Praise of Love today, we will try to answer these questions.

Broadcast originally aired Monday, September 17 at 9:30am on www.WRCR.comThe program focused on the forgotten painter, inventor, couturier, textile designer and ceramist Edith Varian Cockcroft (1881-1962). Eve M. Kahn (Art Historian and New York Times contributor) appeared on the broadcast to tell us about what she has uncovered, including interviews with Cockcroft and reminiscences from people who knew her.Cockcroft, a Brooklyn native, studied art with William Merritt Chase and traveled widely in Europe before World War I. Critics lauded her atmospheric views of French and British coastal villages and portraits of nudes against vibrant fabric backdrops. Le Figaro observed that she succeeded at depicting peasant life with "ardor or roughness," and the New York Times praised the "character and vigor" of her work. (And many reviewers mistook her for a man, since she invariably left her first name off her signatures on canvas.) She exhibited at venues such as the Paris Salon, the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Collectors as elite as Moscow's Ivan Morosov acquired her work.In the 1920s, Cockcroft ran a Manhattan couture studio and patented methods for printing silk, in patterns partly based on Javanese batiks. Her blouse-making kits were marketed nationwide as a "silk sensation," and her clothes were worn by the performers Irene Castle and Jeanette MacDonald. In the 1930s, she moved to Sloatsburg, where she kept painting--from Europe to Haiti--and designing textiles while also producing dinnerware sets in metallic glazes.Kahn gave a lecture during a small exhibition of Edith’s artworks at Harmony Hall on October 14, 2018.Crossroads of Rockland History, a program of the Historical Society of Rockland County, airs on the third Monday of each month at 9:30 am,right after the Steve and Jeff morning show, on WRCR radio at www.WRCR.com. She hears how life is changing there, not just in the big city of Barcelona but in the more rural areas near the Pyrenees. Sandi also talks about the Cornish coast with the historian and author Philip Marsden who has lived in the Falmouth area for many years and reflects on the role of the sea in the lives of the residents and visitors from the days of sail to the present. Producer: Harry Parker.
