We know the record for scoring against the Knicks is Wilt Chamberlain with 100 points back on March 2, 1962 (see yesterday's episode)… so, how about the rest of the NBA?Lillard broke a record previously held by Allen Iverson, who scored 58 against Houston in 2002. Today is the 61st anniversary of Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game……and we're less than a week away from Damian Lillard scoring 71 against the Rockets. You don't need a cool video on that, it just happened and it's all over the internet.I noticed on the list of all-time 70-point games that Lillard's was the first in the month of February. Indeed, according to Stathead, the all-time record for the month had been 68 by Pete Maravich in 1977. There's no pro basketball team in Hershey, but tonight, the town made famous for its chocolate is hosting a matchup between the Philadelphia Warriors and the New York Knicks. Chamberlain is Philly's biggest star and he's having a great season, but he partied hard the night before. In celebration of the 100th episode of BBH.101, we wanted to share the story of Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game. While this game is certainly not forgotten from the annals of basketball history, it seemed appropriate for the episode. But Wilt hardly set his single-game scoring record alone. It took the rest of the Philadelphia Warriors team to give him assists and set screens for him to get open. Despite the New York Knicks doing everything in their power to prevent him scoring 100, the Warriors banded together to help Chamberlain reach this incredible milestone. Archie Clark broke into the NBA with the Los Angeles Lakes in 1966. He came off the bench his first season (1966-67) and averaged 10.5 PPG. Over the course of the next few seasons, Archie brought two new moves to the game that so any players use today, the “Shake and Bake” and the “step-back”. And while Archie was an innovator on the floor with such moves, it was what he did off the court that has made the most important and lasting impression for the NBA stars of today – he challenged management when it came to contract negotiations. Very few players whose names weren’t Chamberlain, Russell, Baylor, etc. saw the big dollars of the day. But Archie fought and won. It was his determination that paved the way for today’s “supporting” players. But, Archie was more than a supporting player. He was a star, albeit, for teams that weren’t so great. After spending the first two years of his career with the Los Angeles Lakers, Archie was traded to the Philadelphia Warriors (before they moved to San Francisco) for Wilt Chamberlain. He was also traded to the Baltimore Bullets (now the Washington Wizards) and spent time with the Detroit Pistons and the Seattle Supersonics (now the Oklahoma City Thunder). Archie enjoyed a terrific career and is on this episode of Sports’ Forgotten Heroes to talk about it all. Also on this episode of SFH is Bob Kuska who just released a new book about Archie, “Shake and Bake, The Life and Times of NBA Great Archie Clark.” Archie and Bob talk in great detail about Archie’s “battles” with management and how the game differs from what it is today, including the incredible demands placed on NBA players back in the late 60s and early 70s when it came to travel, the arenas they played in, three and four games in a row in different cities and the incredible pressure to play even if you couldn’t walk or shoot for fear of being cut. We dial up Robert Cherry, author of the definitive biography of legendary pro basketball great Wilt Chamberlain ("Wilt: Larger Than Life"), to delve into the lesser-known (but enormously fascinating) aspects of the "Big Dipper"'s athletic career - including intriguing stops and stints with: The Harlem Globetrotters (1958-59) - where Chamberlain effectively played out his senior college year after two years (and an NCAA Tournament Final) with Kansas, before becoming age-eligible for the NBA Draft; The Philadelphia Warriors (1959-62) - "Mogul" Eddie Gottleib's burgeoning NBA franchise where Chamberlain was preordained to join by way of the league's territorial rights framework, and where he quickly shattered all kinds of scoring records - including a history-making 100-point game against the NY Knicks on 3/2/62; The San Diego Conquistadors (1973-74) - the rival ABA's first (and only) expansion franchise that lured Chamberlain away from his remaining option year with the LA Lakers (after two consecutive NBA Finals appearances and a title in 1972) with a $600,000 offer to be the Qs' combo player/coach; and The International Volleyball Association (1974-79) - where Chamberlain wore a myriad of hats as a founder, investor, owner, player (Southern California Bangers, Orange County Stars, Seattle Smashers), coach, and even league Commissioner. 

This week marks the 30th anniversary of the NBA's 1991 Eastern Conference Finals. Chicago versus back-to-back NBA Champion, Detroit. The Bulls owned the one-seed in the East, thanks to a dominant 61-21 record. Chicago brought out the broom to dispose of round-one opponents, New York, 3-0. The Bulls then handed Sir Charles and his 76ers a Gentlemen’s Sweep, eliminating Philly from the ECSF in five games. The Pistons, meanwhile, entered the '91 Playoffs as the East’s third-seed (50-32). Their record was misleading, however, as team captain, Isiah Lord Thomas III underwent surgery on his right wrist in late January. He ultimately missed 32 games - the team went 18-14 in his absence - returning to the Pistons’ line-up in early April. Detroit went the distance in round one, holding off Dominique Wilkins’ Hawks (3-2). The ageing Boston Celtics extended Detroit to six games in the ECSF, before finally bowing out. For context, Chicago and Detroit had met in each of the previous three postseasons. In 1988 it was the ECSF (Pistons 4-1). In 1989, Chicago went one better, meeting Detroit in the ECF (Pistons prevailed 4-2). In 1990, Chicago took Detroit to the brink of extinction in the ECF, before Detroit’s experience – and a deciding-game seven at The Palace of Auburn Hills – saw the Pistons advance to (and win) the NBA Finals for the second time in a row. The Eastern Conference Finals, whilst often physical, were largely a non-event. Chicago cruised to a 3-0 lead w/ the opportunity to close out the series in Detroit and advance to the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history. The bruising nature of the series was punctuated in the second quarter of Game 4, as Scottie Pippen drove to the hoop, only to be confronted by two of the men responsible for Detroit’s iconic Bad Boys moniker. Down 23 points, w/ less than five minutes left in Game 4, Pistons Coach Chuck Daly subbed out Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars. Detroit’s reign as NBA Champion was over. With under 10 seconds left in the series, most of the Pistons left the floor, not waiting around for the final buzzer. Less than a handful remained to congratulate the Bulls on their victory. Post-game, Daly said: “At this point, I think Chicago’s a better club than we are. Any club that can handle us four straight deserves to go to the Finals”. From the ever-philosophical coach of the Bulls, Phil Jackson: “To say that this is unexpected, to sweep this team, is an understatement. But after losing to this team for three years, I think we deserve a shot”. Michael Jordan added “We wanted to go through Detroit. There can’t be any tarnish now on what we do from here on in because we went through Detroit”. The day after the Pistons were eliminated, in a cleverly-titled headline of ‘Four-Gone Conclusion’, the Detroit Free Press printed that the Pistons were just the fourth team in NBA history (through 1991) to have their championship reign end with a sweep the following year. The others? The 1957 Philadelphia Warriors and the 1983 and 1989 Los Angeles Lakers. Meanwhile, for Chicago, years of frustration finally put to rest, the Bulls looked towards the 1991 NBA Finals. International Tennis Hall of Fame Museum director Doug Stark (The SPHAs: The Life and Times of Basketball's Greatest Jewish Team) joins this week's 'cast for an authoritative exploration of one of his first loves - pro basketball's pioneering Philadelphia SPHAs.   Originally organized in 1918 as a local amateur team by South Philadelphia High School grads Eddie Gottlieb, Harry Passon and Hughie Black - and acronymically named for their early uniform sponsors, the South Philadelphia Hebrew Association - the SPHAs rose from a regional amateur league power in the 1920s to become an early avatar for professional basketball dominance in the 1930s & 40s.   With home games played in the ballroom of Philly's Broadwood Hotel (replete with customary singles dances afterwards), the SPHAs became a sensation in the local Jewish social scene, and soon graduated (under the guidance of Gottlieb) to winning titles in various early pro hoops leagues like the Eastern League and Abe Saperstein's American Basketball League - while beating legendary teams like Boston's Original Celtics and New York's Renaissance Five along the way.  In the ABL alone, the SPHAs captured seven titles in their 13 years of play between 1933-45, and were runners-up twice.   In 1946, the NBA-forerunning Basketball Association of America debuted, and the ABL ceased to be a major league. With Gottlieb establishing the Philadelphia Warriors as his BAA franchise, the SPHAs continued with the minor league ABL and as a touring opponent of the Saperstein's barnstorming Harlem Globetrotters. Philadelphia's dean of baseball writers Rich Westcott ("The Mogul: Eddie Gottlieb, Philadelphia Sports Legend and Pro Basketball Pioneer") steps outside the batter's box this week to help us go deep into the story of one of pro basketball's most foundational figures, Eddie Gottlieb. Armed with a great smile and a razor-sharp memory, the Ukranian-born and South Philly-raised Gottlieb was a multi-faceted hoops pioneer - rules innovator, successful coach, masterful promoter, and logistics wizard - whose tactical talents and business acumen gave rise to what would ultimately evolve into today's NBA. In 1918, Gottlieb organized and coached a social club-sponsored amateur team for the South Philadelphia Hebrew Association (SPHA) that he grew into a regionally dominant and ultimately professional powerhouse; from the late 1920s to early 1940s, the SPHAs dominated the original Eastern and American Basketball Leagues, winning multiple championships and regularly beating prominent touring clubs like the Original Celtics and the New York Renaissance Five (Rens). In 1946, Gottlieb helped establish a new professional league - the Basketball Association of America. As owner, general manager, coach, and "promoter-in-chief" of the league's Philadelphia Warriors, he won the BAA’s first championship in 1946-47. Three seasons later, Gottlieb played a pivotal role in the merger of the BAA with the National Basketball League to form the National Basketball Association, where his Warriors would win a second league crown in 1956, and to which he would later add the groundbreaking talents of one Wilt Chamberlain in 1959. After selling the team in 1962, Gottleib became the NBA's "Mr. Basketball" - the definitive and authoritative resource spanning league rules, history, scheduling, and operations - until his death in 1979.  He is immortalized not only as a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, but also as the name on the trophy given annually to the NBA's Rookie of the Year.

Growing up in Hershey, Pennsylvania, Ernie Accorsi had an early, rich sports experience, when the Philadelphia Eagles held training camp there, and where the Wilt Chamberlain-led Philadelphia Warriors trained and played. Accorsi started out as a sportswriter, before being hired by the Baltimore Colts in 1970 as the public relations director, the start of Accorsi's long career in the NFL. In this latest "Stories with Street Cred" podcast, Accorsi discusses his distinguished NFL arc, his childhood memories in Hershey, and his sportswriting experiences, which included an interview with Moonlight Graham, and an exclusive scoop on Chamberlain's trade to the Lakers. Accorsi's last NFL executive post was general manager of the Giants, and perhaps his signature front office move was acquiring quarterback Eli Manning in a draft-day trade with San Diego. Basketball great Joe Ruklick has passed from natural causes at the age of 82.Ruklick, was born in Chicago but was moved to Covenant Children’s Home at age 11. He was cut from Princeton’s freshman basketball team but would persevere and go on to lead the Tigers to state tournament appearances in 1954 and 1955.Ruklick was an All-American at Northwestern University. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors and will be remembered for passing the ball for the assist on Wilt Chamberlain's final score in his record 100-point game in 1962. Chamberlain and Ruklick, who played against each other in college, remained friends until Chamberlain’s passing in 1999.After his NBA career, Ruklick became an investment banker, a father of three and earned a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern at the age 50.Ruklick spoke with WZOE while attending a Tigers game in 2010 in which his uniform was being retired. As an outfielder starting 127 games (completing just 91), Howard was credited with 19 outfield assists (the league leader, Johnny Callison, starting 147 games had just five more). The season ended with the Dodgers and San Francisco Giants tied for first place, necessitating a three-game pennant playoff; Howard had only a single in 11 at-bats and struck out three times against Billy Pierce in the first game, including the final out; but he had a run and an RBI in the second contest, an 8–7 win. The Giants took the pennant in three games, but Howard would later finish ninth in the MVP voting.

Tom Gola is a Philadelphia Big Five basketball icon. He led La Salle to the NIT championship in 1952 and the NCAA championship in 1954, and holds the NCAA record for most rebounds in a career. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1976. In Mr. All-Around, avid sports fan and reporter David Grzybowski provides a definitive biography of Gola. He uses exclusive interviews he conducted with Gola in 2013 and features anecdotes by many figures of Philadelphia and basketball history, including John Cheney, Fran Dunphy, and Lionel Simmons. After the NBA, Gola transitioned to a second career as a politician, serving as Pennsylvania State Representative and Philadelphia City Controller. His dedication to public service involved joining politician Arlen Specter on a campaign that revolutionized political marketing within Philadelphia. David Grzybowski is a former television news reporter for WPHL in Philadelphia, where he covered the 2015 Papal Visit by Pope Francis, the annual Philadelphia Mummers parade, and the 2016 Democratic National Convention as well as the 2016 Villanova Wildcats NCAA championship run.
