Finneran’s Wake – where the ART OF CONVERSATION lives. Here, no topic is untouchable, no idea inadmissible, and no one too heretical to be heard. As the great French essayist Montaigne once said, “To my taste, the most fruitful and natural exercise of our minds is CONVERSATION. I find the practice of it the most delightful activity in our livesâ€. It certainly is the most delightful activity in my life. I want it to be so in yours as well. To that end, I humbly welcome you to my channel. Here, we'll exercise our minds together. Here, we'll practice this delightful activity as friends. We'll engage, now and forever, in the art--the highest and most human art--of conversation! With affection, Daniel

Barry Brown is an author, cowboy, horse breaker, bull rider, and rodeo competitor to whom the nickname, “The Bionic Bull Rider” has been, I think, very fittingly applied. Barry began competing as a bull rider at the tender age of 15. Despite its perils, he fell in love with the sport, in which he continued to participate (either as a competitor or a judge) for the next four decades of his life. During the course of his long career, he broke just about every bone in his body.Fittingly, he received the nickname, “The Bionic Bull Rider” after he underwent an unprecedented surgery to repair a fractured sternum (with which he competed, unmended, for many years). I was honored to have him as a guest. On a scorching hot summer day, Barry was attired in proper cowboy garb: tall black leather boots, thick denim jeans, a long-sleeve Wrangler shirt, black neckerchief, and trusty cowboy hat. As he sat there fielding silly questions from me, absorbing the heat of the hot sun, he was completely unperturbed. He was as patient, stoic, thoughtful, and gentlemanly a man as I've had the pleasure to meet. He manifested, in the best possible way, the true “Cowboy attitude” to which I'll be working on conforming myself in the coming months. In the meantime…Be sure to check out my Instagram page for shorts from this and prior episodes: @danielethanfinneran https://www.instagram.com/danielethanfinneran/Twitter: @DanielEFinneranWebsite: finneranswake.comSend emails to finneranswake@gmail.comMy sister project, PNEUMA, on which I put out sleep stories, meditations, mindfulness content: @pneumabydanielfinneran Pneumameditations.comBe sure to subscribe to this channel if you enjoy the conversations. Alas...How quickly (and imperceptibly!) the years accrue! Before you know it, you're departing your second, and entering your third (or fourth, or fifth…) decade of life and wondering, as you pass another milestone, celebrate another birthday, and add another number to anno domini: "How should I tailor my fitness regimen to my (advancing) age?" In this episode, resident fitness guru and recurring guest, James Flood, outlines exactly what you should do in each decade of life to maximize your health and wellbeing. On what exercises should you focus at the age of 25? How much time for recovery is needed when you're 39? Should you continue deadlifting with a barbell when you're 62? No matter the decade in which you find yourself, the information in this episode will prove valuable. I hope that you find it enjoyable as well! James Charney is a psychiatrist, cinephile, professor, and author. His latest book, “Madness at the Movies” examines the mental disorders by which Hollywood's most infamously deranged characters (Travis Bickle from Scorcese's “Taxi Driver”; Norman Bates from Hitchcock's “Psycho”) are afflicted. The book, written for a popular audience, is an extension of a beloved course (also entitled, “Madness at the Movies”) that he taught at Yale University for many years. A physician by training, Dr. Charney is not only a lover of movies, but a faithful student of their history and a discerning judge of their merit. As you'll see, his knowledge of film history is encyclopedic, and his passion for the art is infectious! It was an absolute honor to speak with him and I can't wait to watch all of the films he recommended! In this episode, Dr. Charney and I discuss: His exposure to the cinema at a young age; The importance of the movie theater in the 1950s (contrasted with its unimportance today); The communal experience of attending the theater; Being traumatized by horror films as a boy (and how that became the genre to which he later devoted much of his professorial career!); The greatest duos in film history; The best action films in the modern age; How action sequences are edited; How to keep the attention of an audience; How to watch and (really) appreciate a film; Musicals, then and now; If we are at a low ebb of creativity; Why we should all go back and watch “the classics”; How to become fully cultured in the arts; Where to view the oldies; Television v. Welcome to Finneran's Wake – where the ART OF CONVERSATION lives. Here, no topic is untouchable, no idea inadmissible, and no one too heretical to be heard. As the great French essayist Montaigne once said, “To my taste, the most fruitful and natural exercise of our minds is CONVERSATION. I find the practice of it the most delightful activity in our lives”. With affection,Daniel
I realized, while reflecting on the last few conversations of which I partook, that I twice made reference to one special book: “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” by Milan Kundera. Kundera, a Czech-French author who is (at the time of this posting) an incredible 94 years of age, is an extraordinary man. Twice expelled from the Czech Communist Party, he's a reform-minded liberal bohemian (in the best sense of the word) to whom my friend and prior guest, Noah Charney, introduced me. In his 1984 masterpiece, “The Unbearable Lightness of Being”, Kundera employed his capacious intellect and the full force of his literary talent to create an unforgettable book–of which I STRONGLY encourage you to purchase a copy! The book begins with a contemplation of Nietzsche's terrifying doctrine of “Eternal Recurrence”, by which I've always been fascinated. From this doctrine (or its alternative!) comes the “lightness” of being–the meaninglessness that attends to a life whose fleeting moments are brief, vanishing, and never to happen again. Nietzschean philosophy permeates the work, but Kundera also explores political, sexual, cultural, and autobiographical themes. A man of the Left, his criticism of the Left is shockingly candid, incisive, and deep. The “Grand March”, in which he himself participated as a young man, is still going on today. Indeed, it's likely never to end. And his idea of “Totalitarian Kitsch” aptly describes the strange advertisements and messages (I'm talking to you, Bud Light and The North Face!) with which our social media feeds are now awash. Check your local library or bookstore for a copy of Kundera's work. This is the version I rented (and then purchased) from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Unbearable-Lightness-Being-Perennial-Classics/dp/0061148520/ref=sr_1_2?crid=BDHTWBV0CEMW&keywords=milan+kundera&qid=1685325408&sprefix=milan+kundera%2Caps%2C123&sr=8-2With affection,Daniel
Svetlana Slapšak is an author, editor, anthropologist, philologist, expert in gender studies and the history of the Balkans. Born in Belgrade, Serbia in 1948, she now resides and works in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Svetlana is the type of person to whom I could talk for hours: the breadth of her experiences is exceeded only by the depth of her reading (which, I assure you, is unfathomably DEEP, indeed!)In this conversation, Svetlana and I discuss: Her upbringing in post-War, Soviet-controlled eastern Europe; Being raised by her grandmother and mother; Her early exposure to Western literature; Her “run in” with the Secret Police; Stalin's children; Marxism; Communism; Feminism; Platonism; The Greek tragedians and comedians; Sexual politics in Ancient Greece; Athens v. Noah Charney is an art historian, lecturer, author, and expert on art thievery. His latest book, The 12-Hour Art Expert, is the perfect entree for the layperson (like me!) who's interested in learning more about art, but doesn't quite know where to begin. My dad joins me to discuss Nikki Haley's announcement to run for President, John Fetterman's second admission to the hospital, and the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio.
On a bright, sunny February day, a couple of curious Montanans happened to look up and notice a peculiar flying object. At a slow, leisurely pace, what appeared to be a massive balloon was traversing their picturesque and boundless sky. Word started to get around that it might belong to a hostile actor. Only then did the Biden administration announce that, with a high level of confidence, this was no ordinary balloon, but a special SPY balloon deployed by the Chinese government. Did it proceed to intercept the balloon? To shoot it down? To seek redress from the CCP? To send our own balloon above the city of Wuhan in response? No. The balloon simply carried on its way, drifting with perfect nonchalance to the coast of South Carolina. Why did the CCP do this? And what exactly is our government doing? Please, if you have answers, comment below.
Long withheld from public view, the video of Paul Pelosi's cudgeling by David DePape was finally released by authorities in San Francisco. The harrowing clip, widely accessible on YouTube, shows a flat-footed officer intervening to separate the two men. Pelosi, an elderly man in his 8th decade of life, suffered a fractured skull and was knocked unconscious for about 3 minutes. By all accounts, he has not yet, and perhaps never fully will recuperate from the injuries he sustained that night. DePape, a peculiar character of Canadian extraction, was apprehended and is facing many years in prison. The second and more disquieting video shows the altercation between Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old father and FedEx employee, and the Memphis police. For having allegedly violated a routine traffic law, the officers stopped and detained Nichols. After he apparently evaded arrest, the officers descended upon and mercilessly beat him. Nichols, a black man, died of his injuries at the hospital a few days later. The five police officers, also black, have since been relieved of their posts and charged with second degree murder. What were your first impressions upon watching these videos? What do they say about police in America? What about the narrative of race?

In this episode of "Our Thought Bubble", my father and I discuss the shocking revelation that President Biden was in unlawful possession of classified documents dating back to his tenure as VP six years ago. This is the same infraction, a "strict liability" crime, over which the FBI raided former President Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate. More importantly, it appeared to be one of a few crimes on which House Democrats and Biden's DOJ were hoping to indict him. That seems less likely to happen now. Some points on which we expand in this video: our system has an issue with over-classifying documents; as VP, Biden lacked the power to declassify documents; Trump, as president, enjoyed that power, although it's unclear if it occurred to him to exercise it in a punctual manner; the press immediately granted Biden the "benefit of the doubt", assuming nothing nefarious in his retention of documents; the same press immediately accused Trump of purloining and trading the codes to our nuclear arsenal; Trump's recalcitrance v. Biden's compliance; Hunter Biden's involvement; etc. Toward the end, we discuss Tesla's announcement that it would be reducing the prices of its two cars: the Models 3 and Y. My Dad, a close follower of automobile trends, provides some clarity on the situation. Visit our sites, finneranswake.com and ourtoughtbubble.com. Stoicism–named for the stoa (or covered walkway) under whose cooling shade Athenian citizens gathered and philosophers lectured–is a philosophy whose influence has stretched across the ages. It was, so many centuries ago, a philosophy to which much of the classical world subscribed. Today, despite our distaste for all things “old” (how boring!), it remains a school of thought from which we can derive many benefits. Brittany Polat, who's devoted much of her life to studying and popularizing these benefits, is an author, mother, board member of multiple Stoic organizations, and creator of Stoicare, a 501c3 whose noble aim is to “share Stoicism as a holistic system of wisdom”. She was gracious enough to join me for a few hours to discuss this school of thought of which she's such an enthusiastic and well-versed champion. I can't wait to share her wisdom with you! This episode will teach you…The history of Stoicism; the most important Stoic thinkers with whom you should be familiar; the life of Marcus Aurelius; the Eastern influences on Stoicism; the connection between Buddhism and Stoicism; the compatibility between our Judeo-Christian tradition and Stoicism; how to employ Stoicism as a PARENT raising young children; the difference between mere mindfulness, and stoic meditation; Stoic figures throughout history; whether or not George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were stoics; how to implement a daily journaling practice; the importance of Viktor Frankl; The search for meaning in life; Rationality and Society–the two fundamental features of our species; And much more! Charles Love is the Executive Director of Seeking Educational Excellence, the host of The Charles Love Show, the co-host of the podcast, Cut the Bull, and the author of two books. Race, much more than class, persists in being the chief issue with which American society grapples–the timeless, contentious issue over which so many of our fights are still waged, and to which there appears to be no imminent resolution. In recent years, this struggle seems to have worsened, and one might be forgiven for thinking that racial harmony is a kind of impossible dream of which he ought to be disabused. This, at least, is the message promulgated by the likes of BLM, the 1619 Project, and the mysterious Movement for Black Lives–groups into which, with a rare combination of fearlessness and impartiality, my esteemed guest, Charles Love, probes. The web's most dynamic (and handsome) father and son duo are at it again! In this episode, we reflect on the huge, earthshaking, history-making announcement for which we've all been waiting: Donald Trump will seek the presidency in 2024. Should he succeed in escaping the Republican Primary with the Party's nomination, he'll likely face down the dotard of Delaware, Scranton's senescent son, Joseph R. Mark Schrad is a professor in the department of political science at Villanova University, over whose “Russian Area Studies” he presides as director. Professor Schrad is the author of three books: The Political Power of Bad Ideas; Vodka Politics; and, his latest work, Smashing the Liquor Machine (to which, if interested in their purchase, I'll include links below). We sip our spirits, imbibe our beers, and become giddy over the prospect of tasting an evening's dram of liquor, without ever really thinking about the history hidden behind these potent drinks. We look forward, with unsuppressable glee, to the decanting, the toasting, the clinking, and, more than anything else, the delicious imbibing to which these merry libations call us. And yet, at the bottom of your shot of vodka, your glass of gin, your cup of rum, your drop of whiskey, there mingles among the dregs a sordid tale. It's a tale of state control; extortionate taxes; the intoxication of the citizenry; the raising of revenue by immoral means; the introduction of addictive beverages to colonized peoples abroad; the response of humane “progressives”; the push toward Prohibition; and the many setbacks encountered along the way. From this episode, you'll learn…A bit about modern, domestic politics from a university professor in the Keystone state; the results of the 2022 midterm elections; the ongoing War between Russia and Ukraine; the role that alcohol played throughout history in raising revenue for the state; the meaning of “alco-imperialism”; the difference between fermented and distilled beverages; how alcohol affected indigenous peoples; why we should re-acquaint ourselves with typewriters; and much more! In this (experimental) episode, my father and I sit down in the shady comfort of our back patio to discuss the shocking results of the 2022 midterm elections, in which the Republicans vastly underperformed even the most modest of expectations. At the time of this episode's posting, it appears that the Democrats will have gained at least one seat in the Senate, secured a few contentious governor races (most notably in Arizona and Michigan), and totally avoided the “Red Wave” in the House by which their comfortable majority was predicted to be wiped away. Behind the scenes, we were playing with a new microphone arrangement, which might explain the discrepancy in volume.Be sure to let me know what you think of this episode! I'm planning to do more “patio” sessions in the future.Send emails to finneranswake@gmail.comVisit my website at finneranswake.com
Ignacio Zuleta is a Colombian lawyer, writer, and yogi. Born into politics, raised in the capital, trained as a lawyer…Ignacio's career path appeared, until the transformative age of thirty (that strange moment in the life of a man at which epiphanies most often occur–just ask the Buddha, Joseph Smith, and Jesus) somewhat predictable: he'd ascend the ladder of his profession and society, accumulate wealth, acquire status, maybe run for office, and luxuriate in the fruits of his labor. No sooner had he reached his third decade than a spiritual awakening visited him, roused him, and forced him to alter his life's pre-charted course. In response to this visitation, he sold all his possessions and stopped practicing law. He bid adieu to his family and uprooted himself from the soil out of which he grew. He purchased a one-way ticket to India, where he studied under expert yogis, among whom he now numbers himself. From this episode, you'll learn…How to commit to radical change; where to go to discover your truest, inmost passion; what it's like to sell all your possessions, quit your job, bid farewell to your family and friends, and travel to the other side of the globe in pursuit of a dream; the importance of nature, and how to reconnect with her; the benefits of “grounding”; the power of Ayahuasca; if religion can be a drug; how to reach a “spiritual” state in our material world; Colombian politics; Gabriel Garcia Marquez; advice for the next generation; and much more! The Pop Historian is a general historian with an exciting, eclectic new channel on YouTube. “The historian must serve two masters: the past and the present”. In compliance with Fritz Stern, the late German-American professor of history at Columbia University by whom the above statement was issued, the Pop Historian has undergone to do just that. In a highly original, accessible, and entertaining way, he has packaged fascinating bits of history in a series of compelling videos, using the technology of today to tell great stories from the past.
