featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2493: Edward VII Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Saturday, 2 March 2024 is Edward VII.Edward VII (Albert Edward; 9 November 1841 – 6 May 1910) was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 22 January 1901 until his death in 1910.The second child and eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Edward, nicknamed "Bertie", was related to royalty throughout Europe. He was Prince of Wales and heir apparent to the British throne for almost 60 years. During his mother's reign, he was largely excluded from political influence and came to personify the fashionable, leisured elite. He married Princess Alexandra of Denmark in 1863, and the couple had six children. As Prince of Wales, Edward travelled throughout Britain performing ceremonial public duties and represented Britain on visits abroad. His tours of North America in 1860 and of the Indian subcontinent in 1875 proved popular successes, but despite public approval, his reputation as a playboy prince soured his relationship with his mother.Edward inherited the throne upon his mother's death in 1901. The King played a role in the modernisation of the British Home Fleet and the reorganisation of the British Army after the Second Boer War of 1899–1902. He re-instituted traditional ceremonies as public displays and broadened the range of people with whom royalty socialised. He fostered good relations between Britain and other European countries, especially France, for which he was popularly called "Peacemaker", but his relationship with his nephew, German Emperor Wilhelm II, was poor. The Edwardian era, which covered Edward's reign and was named after him, coincided with the start of a new century and heralded significant changes in technology and society, including steam turbine propulsion and the rise of socialism. He died in 1910 in the midst of a constitutional crisis that was resolved the following year by the Parliament Act 1911, which restricted the power of the unelected House of Lords. Edward was succeeded by his only surviving son, George V.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:16 UTC on Saturday, 2 March 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Edward VII on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Nicole Standard.

Episode 67 is a special: A Brief History of Coronation Broadcasts (or Broadcast Coronations) How the BBC has brought two such ceremonies to the air, as they (and others) now tackle a third, for King Charles III. We'll tell you all about the two previous on-air crownings, of George VI and Elizabeth II, both on radio and TV - but first we'll go back to the four monarchs before them: Queen Victoria's (1938) used a certain technological advancement to bring more eyes than ever before to a coronation procession. Edward VII's (1902) had a film made of it, though a simulation using actors. (Had director Georges Méliès got his way, it would have included Queen Victoria's ghost!). Edward's wife Princess Alexandra had a few links to broadcasting too. Watch Georges Méliès' film The Coronation of Edward VII (1902): https://youtu.be/ME6z810Zre8 George V's (1911) was filmed for newsreel. That newsreel footage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8SoUPxIkZ8  Edward VIII's (1937) was planned then canned after his (broadcast) abdication. George VI's (1937) took the same coronation day, same plans, changed the name etched onto the crown (I think that's how they do it), and his state occasion made it to radio and TV: the first broadcast coronation. We'll meet the engineer who taught him to conquer his stammer for the microphone, but had to sleep in Westminster Abbey. And learn how many (or how few) cameras were available to use. You probably have more in your house right now... Read by Hugo Vickers, Gregory Cox, Julie Teal and Sandra Duncan. The insights and memories of a member of the British Royal Family - HRH The Duke of Kent - in conversation with Hugo Vickers about some of the key events of his life and The Queen's reign. HRH The Duke of Kent has been at the heart of the British Royal Family throughout his life. As a working member of the Royal Family, he has supported his cousin, The Queen, representing her at home and abroad. His royal duties began when, in 1952, at the age of 16, he walked in the procession behind King George VI's coffin, later paying homage to The Queen at her coronation in 1953. Since then, he has witnessed and participated in key royal occasions. He represented The Queen at independence ceremonies from the age of 25, he was riding with her when blanks were fired at Trooping the Colour in 1981, he was the oldest soldier on parade at Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph in November 2020 and he was alongside The Queen at her official birthday celebrations in June 2021 as colonel of the Scots Guards. No member of the Royal Family has spoken extensively of the modern reign and their part in it before. A Royal Life is a unique account based on a series of conversations between the duke and acclaimed royal historian Hugo Vickers. It covers some of the most important moments and experiences of the duke's life, from his upbringing at his family home Coppins in Buckinghamshire, his 21 years of army life, his royal tours and events, through to his work for over 140 different organisations, including presenting the trophies at Wimbledon for more than 50 years. Here, too, are recollections of family members including his mother, Princess Marina; his grandmother, Queen Mary; his cousin, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh; and his uncle, King George VI. Other members of the Royal Family contribute their memories, including his wife, the Duchess of Kent, the duke's siblings, Princess Alexandra and Prince Michael of Kent, his son, the Earl of St Andrews, his daughter, Lady Helen Taylor as well as his cousins, Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia, Archduchess Helen of Austria and her brother, Hans Veit Toerring. A Royal Life is an unprecedented, insightful and remarkable slice of royal history.

Murray Olds: New cluster emerges as Brisbane begins three-day lockdown

Queensland's Covid-19 cluster has grown by 10 cases overnight - including eight community cases - as millions of Brisbane residents wake to their first day of a three-day snap lockdown.Brisbane is now dealing with two separate Covid-19 clusters after a doctor and a nurse at the same Brisbane hospital contracted the UK strain of the virus from different patients.Of today's eight new community cases, five are linked to a hens party in Byron Bay, NSW, whose guests were infected by the Brisbane nurse.Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the state is now dealing with two distinct clusters.First cluster: 8 people, with two under investigation• In early March three cases were linked to a Princess Alexandra Hospital doctor that contracted coronavirus from a patient. This is considered the first cluster.• In the past few days five more cases have been linked to that first cluster.• There are also two more cases under investigation that authorities believe may be also linked to the doctor.Second cluster: 8 people• The second cluster is linked to a Princess Alexandra Hospital nurse who is also believed to have contracted the virus from a different patient.• That nurse then attended a hens night in Byron Bay, NSW, and there are now seven confirmed cases in that cluster. Including the patient, who is a returned traveller, the second cluster stands at eight people.• There is an additional infection that could be linked to either the first or second cluster.'Hens entertainer' linked to second clusterA Queensland tradie who travelled to Byron Bay to attend the hens party as an entertainer then returned to the Gold Coast and visited an aged-care facility while infected. The man is now part of the second cluster. The hens entertainer evidently became infected at the party before returning to the Gold Coast where he attended the TriCare Mermaid Beach Aged Care Residence as a contractor working on refurbishments. The revelation has plunged the nursing home into high alert as efforts to track down possible cluster links continue. There are now 78 active cases in Queensland. No new cases were detected in NSW overnight.A mask mandate and other restrictions have been imposed for the entire state of Queensland, while more than two million people living in Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Redlands, Logan and Ipswich council areas can only leave their homes to shop for essentials, attend medical appointments, exercise, and to work or study if they cannot do so at home."The good news is that these cases are linked and we now believe that there are two distinct clusters," Palaszczuk said."So, we have a cluster linked, of course, to that Princess Alexandra doctor. And we have a second cluster linked to the Princess Alexandra nurse."Palaszczuk said today's figures show sending Brisbane into lockdown was "absolutely the right call".The next 48 hours are critical in determining whether the state's outbreak can be brought under control by the time the snap-lockdown is set to end, Palaszczuk said."What we don't want to see is unlinked community transmission out there," she said. "So you know, like I said – the next two days is critical for our contact tracers to get on top of this."Chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young said she will introduce a new mandate from tomorrow that will see only hospital and health service workers who have had their first vaccine dose allowed to work with confirmed coronavirus cases. It follows revelations that the nurse who contracted Covid-19 had not received her vaccination despite working in a Covid ward. Queensland authorities have deflected blame on to the Federal government, pointing to supply issues which have drastically impacted the speed of the national vaccine rollout.

On this episode of the Sofa King Podcast, we look at one of the all-time fascinating medical cases, the story of Joseph Merrick--The Elephant Man. Due to a hardcore medical condition, Merrick was deformed beyond recognition as a human being, with a massive head, huge protrusions all over his body, and even skin lesions that smelled. Add a dash of Victorian superstitions, and you have a man who was destined for misery at every turn. None of us are likely to have heard of him if it wasn’t for a world famous play and then a movie called The Elephant Man, but his story is one of sorrow, perseverance, and a surprisingly happy ending. The narrative in those fictions has some truth to it, but the real story varies quite a bit. What we know about him is that he wasn’t born like this. As a young child, he started to get deformities that only increased up till the day he died. His family eventually kicked him out, and even the work he could do got taken away once he was too deformed to perform skilled labor. By then, he was destined for the freak show. For a while, he made some money at this, but as tastes changed, they ran him out of town. If not for the friendship of Doctor Frederick Treves, his life would have ended with him on the street. But instead, he died with good medical care, surrounded by those who came to love him. So, what was the actual condition that caused this? What happened to him in his freak show days? How did he make it back to London after being abandoned in Europe? How did he die? What happened when he met Princess Alexandra? How to get young people to connect with antique jewelry, even if they can’t afford it (yet). Why retail shopping will never go back to the way it was pre-pandemic. Established in 1940 and spanning three generations of family ownership, Kentshire Galleries is one of the foremost dealers of fine period and estate jewelry. In 1988, Kentshire established a free-standing boutique in New York’s premier luxury store, Bergdorf Goodman. Their antique and estate jewelry department continues to occupy a select location on the store’s seventh floor. As the third generation of the family to lead Kentshire, Matthew and Carrie continue to refine the gallery’s founding vision: buying and selling outstanding jewelry and objects of enduring design and elegance. Wilhelm II or William II (German: Friedrich Wilhelm Viktor Albert; 27 January 1859 – 4 June 1941) was the last German Emperor (Kaiser) and King of Prussia. He reigned from 15 June 1888 until his abdication on 9 November 1918 shortly before Germany's defeat in World War I. The eldest grandchild of Queen Victoria, Wilhelm's first cousins included King George V of the United Kingdom and many princesses who, along with Wilhelm's sister Sophia, became European consorts. For most of his life before becoming emperor, he was second in line to succeed his grandfather Wilhelm I on the German and Prussian thrones after his father, Crown Prince Frederick. His grandfather and father both died in 1888, the Year of Three Emperors, making Wilhelm emperor and king. He dismissed the country's longtime chancellor, Otto von Bismarck, in 1890. Upon consolidating power as emperor, Wilhelm launched Germany on a bellicose "New Course" to cement its status as a respected world power. However, he frequently undermined this aim by making tactless, alarming public statements without consulting his ministers. He also did much to alienate his country from the other Great Powers by initiating a massive build-up of the German Navy, challenging French control over Morocco, and backing the Austrian annexation of Bosnia in 1908. His turbulent reign ultimately culminated in his guarantee of military support to Austria-Hungary during the crisis of July 1914, resulting in the outbreak of World War I. A lax wartime leader, he left virtually all decision-making regarding military strategy and organisation of the war effort in the hands of the German General Staff. This broad delegation of authority gave rise to a de facto military dictatorship whose belligerent foreign policy led to the United States' entry into the war on 6 April 1917. After losing the support of the German military and his subjects in November 1918, Wilhelm abdicated and fled to exile in the Netherlands, where he died in 1941. Wilhelm was born on 27 January 1859 at the Crown Prince's Palace, Berlin, to Victoria, Princess Royal, the wife of Prince Frederick William of Prussia (the future Frederick III). His mother was the eldest daughter of Britain's Queen Victoria. At the time of his birth, his great-uncle Frederick William IV was king of Prussia, and his grandfather and namesake Wilhelm was acting as regent. He was the first grandchild of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and one of the two grandchildren born in Albert's lifetime, but more importantly, the first son of the crown prince of Prussia. From 1861, Wilhelm was second in the line of succession to Prussia, and also, after 1871, to the newly created German Empire, which, according to the constitution of the German Empire, was ruled by the Prussian king. At the time of his birth, he was also sixth in the line of succession to the British throne, after his maternal uncles and his mother. A traumatic breech birth resulted in Erb's palsy, which left him with a withered left arm about six inches (15 centimetres) shorter than his right. He tried with some success to conceal this; many photographs show him holding a pair of white gloves in his left hand to make the arm seem longer. In others, he holds his left hand with his right, has his crippled arm on the hilt of a sword, or holds a cane to give the illusion of a useful limb posed at a dignified angle. Historians have suggested that this disability affected his emotional development. In 1863, Wilhelm was taken to England to be present at the wedding of his Uncle Bertie (later King Edward VII), and Princess Alexandra of Denmark. Wilhelm attended the ceremony in a Highland costume, complete with a small toy dirk. During the ceremony, the four-year-old became restless. His eighteen-year-old uncle Prince Alfred, charged with keeping an eye on him, told him to be quiet, but Wilhelm drew his dirk and threatened Alfred. When Alfred attempted to subdue him by force, Wilhelm bit him on the leg. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thehistoryexpress/support

Welcome to the show for September 2010. The Alexandra is a beautiful wet fly that dates from the middle of the 19th Century, named for Princess Alexandra of Denmark. By 1929 the Alexandra had found its way to North American and morphed into a streamer fly. Hard Brothers, being a supplier of fine fly fishing gear including flies, created a variation of the Alexandra the went onto become a productive sea trout fly in the UK and Europe. The Hardy Brother Demon may have a long and convoluted history, but it's a fly that still can catch fish if you tie one on your tippet. Easy to tie, amazingly productive and beautiful to look at, it's a fly everyone needs to carry.
