That’s Debatable!
What Have The Ancient Greeks Ever Done For Us?

That’s Debatable!

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 18, 2024 44:28

The Free Speech Fates have woven a Greek thread through today's episode, starting with the Olympic Games. A 33-page ‘Portrayal Guidelines' document, published ahead of this summer's Paris Games, states that a person's sex is not assigned based on genetics alone. As reported by the Telegraph, the International Olympic Committee has been accused by Martina Navratilova of waging a 1984 version of war on women after asking journalists not to use terms such as “born male” or “biologically male” to describe transgender athletes. It argues that such labels are dehumanising and constitute “problematic language”. Despite the ferocious backlash, Yiannis Exarchos, chief executive of Olympic Broadcasting Services, promised that his team in Paris would use the guidelines as “our Bible”, and “we call on our colleagues across all media to embrace them”. Meanwhile, Greek philosophers are at risk of being scrubbed out of various study courses. A new toolkit for ‘decolonising' philosophy in secondary schools and universities summarily dismisses canonical western philosophers from Plato and Aristotle through to Descartes and Wittgenstein as ‘dead white males' who engaged in solipsistic “armchair theorising” and must now make way for more exciting and sophisticated voices from the ‘Global South' (Mail, Times). The toolkit was drawn up by four undergraduate student interns, working alongside four academic philosophers at SOAS (formerly the School of Oriental and African Studies) in London. We end by discussing our fears around a new form of diversity training, namely ‘plus-size inclusivity training'. Our concerns appear to be shared by oncologist Professor Karol Sikora, who is quoted in the article, “Plus-size inclusivity training is just the sort of nonsense that the senior management in the NHS will make part of the ridiculous politically inspired mandatory training all doctors are forced to do. Please bring back some common sense!”. We couldn't agree more. ‘That's Debatable!' is edited by Jason Clift.

That’s Debatable!

Happy New Year to all our listeners! We begin with some good news from the Spectator. An article penned by Fraser Nelson, the magazine's editor, reveals the pressure he came under to cancel Professor Karol Sikora's appearance at a panel discussion on Britain's cancer crisis. As Fraser explains, the event sponsor, which had been teed up to contribute £25,000, was concerned that the professor did not align with its “values”. It is heartening that there are still media outlets standing for free expression, even when that means losing money (in this instance, sufficient money to keep a staffer employed for a year). We move on to discuss the FSU's submissions to two consultations on diversity and inclusion. They closed in December and were initiated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) respectively. Listeners will not be surprised to hear that we expressed our firm opposition to the proposals. We are concerned that they would further suppress free speech in the workplace, a real effect that we have seen repeatedly in our case work. We round off this first episode of 2024 with a look back at the final two FSU events of 2023, our Christmas comedy night, and the FSU annual Christmas review.      “That's Debatable!” is edited by Jason Clift.

In the final part of his interview, Professor Karol Sikora, one of the world's leading cancer experts and a past director of  the WHO Cancer Programme, explains why the UK does poorly in the treatment of some common cancers and the reforms he believes are necessary to change this. And Karol goes on to discuss the devastating impact that Covid has had on the UK's cancer services, which led to palliative care being halted and now means that patients are presenting with much later stage cancers, which are far harder to treat. He argues we will see the results of this in a higher cancer death toll in years to come. Professor Karol Sikora worked in the UK's NHS for over 35 years and until recently was also the Chief Medical Officer of Rutherford Health, a private company providing proton bean therapy centres.   To sign up to the podcast mailing list and be first to know when a new episode is published, go to whatyourgpdoesn'ttellyou.com The podcast's host, Liz Tucker is an award winning medical journalist and former BBC producer and director.  You can follow Liz on Twitter at @lizctucker and read her Substack newsletter about the podcast at liztucker.substack.com   If you would like to support this podcast you can do so at patreon.com/whatyourgpdoesnttellyou or via PayPal at whatyourgpdoesnttellyou.com
