Rebecca Seal started her career moving up the ranks in print journalism, in a clear break away from the heavy work she had seen her parents do, before accidentally having a TV career, alongside being a cook book writer and journalist. But, when facing burnout from working alone and seeking a resource to help her through it - and finding there wasn't one - she wrote one herself, and so began a new phase of her career exploring more about mental health and wellbeing that would see her write a bestseller -Solo: How To Work Alone (And Not Lose Your Mind) - followed by her latest book Be Bad, Better: How Not Trying So Hard Will Set You Free.  This conversation covers that whole journey, with ideas and insight from Rebecca for those that are working solo, plus a dive into some of the topics from Be Bad, Better, including patriarchy, late-stage capitalism, the beauty industry and consumerism, how those are impacting are lives, and how understanding them and letting them go can really set us free.  It's both hard and hopeful, and it all comes from Rebecca's unique and brilliant brain in a way that manages to be fully relatable. Americans relationship with college is complicated and according to a new poll many think that it might not be worth the cost and time commitment.  Overall, most people believe that the benefits outweigh the costs long-term, and those with bachelor's degrees usually earn 75% more than they would if they only have a high school diploma.  But the pandemic also plays a big part in this as enrollment has been down 1.3 million students since March 2020.  Chris Quintana, education reporter at USA Today, for how many still value higher education, but feel it's too expensive for many. Next, could your smartphone be ruining your memory?  We are increasingly outsourcing much of our memory to an external device like our phones and we are missing out on some of the complex actions our brains should be doing.  Experts say that constant distractions from notifications are keeping us from moving memories into long-term storage.  Another downfall is relying too much on GPS step-by-step directions which can prevent us from improving spatial memory abilities.  Rebecca Seal, contributor to the Guardian, joins us for the rise of digital amnesia. Rebecca Seal is a recovering people pleaser. In her teens and early twenties, she made choices that were based on what she thought other people expected of her. Whether those perceptions were true or not, Rebecca had no idea, but she did feel pressured to get into a prestigious university. She was an excellent student which enabled her to land a spot at the London School of Economics (LSE) to study international relations, which she found challenging for several reasons. At eighteen, Rebecca did not know what she wanted to do, had never been away from home, and was no longer the big fish in a small pond. It was unsettling and painful.  Upon graduation, Rebecca attempted to secure employment with an NGO or the UN, but she could not even get an interview. She returned home to Oxford and waited tables. She felt horribly stuck at the time, but today believes it was a good experience. The lessons learned from the hospitality industry made her a better team player and enabled her to grow as a manager and leader. Rebecca still wanted to pursue her interest in international relations so she returned to London to get her master's at Kings College. In the middle of her program, she got a job at the Observer newspaper, which became her first professional role as a journalist. As she started there thinking she would work as a foreign correspondent, Rebecca became the paper's food writer and editor for six years. She then departed the paper during a tough economic period and decided to try her hand at being a freelance writer. Twelve years later, Rebecca has authored nine cookbooks and continues to be a freelance journalist mostly writing about food and drink. Additionally, she had the opportunity to host a weekly TV show on Sunday mornings about brunch and related topics for 4 years. Six years ago she had an idea for a book about how to survive working alone, because she was feeling alone as a freelancer: SOLO: How To Work Alone (And Not Lose Your Mind).  In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn more about Rebecca's  journey: Rebecca gives talks and workshops, as well as writing articles, on coping with solitary working, to all sorts of people around the world.  She continues to write and publish cookbooks, and to work for UK newspapers. When it comes to your business, do you have tunnel vision? Tunnel vision keeps you focused on the work directly in front of you, passively waiting for people to choose you. It tells you to share content consistently with the hope that what you have to say will resonate with someone, anyone. Most importantly, it keeps you trapped alone in the dark, surrounded by imaginary monsters. Inspired by something I read recently in Solo: How to Work Alone (and Not Lose Your Mind) by Rebecca Seal, I'm going to talk about business tunnel vision and share seven ways to escape it.

Guided by Rebecca Seal, Scientific Director of The Pain Beat, these podcasts feature open and spirited discussion about the hottest topics in pain and how the field moves forward from here. For the first episode, The Pain Beat gathered together a group of pain researchers in Keystone, Colorado, US, where two joint Keystone Symposia, Somatosensation: From Detection to Perception and Pain: Aligning the Target, were being held from February 2-5, 2020. The podcast participants include: Alexander Chesler, National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, US Ardem Patapoutian, Scripps Research, La Jolla, US Sarah Ross, University of Pittsburgh, US Cheryl Stucky, Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, US Stephani Sutherland, PRF freelancer (moderator) The group found a quiet spot away from the hubbub of the meeting to discuss the following question: What biological levels should be targeted to produce the most effective pain therapies: molecules, cells, circuits, or systems?

It's said that loneliness can increase your risk of death by 26% and poor social connections are as bad for your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Being a solo or an at-home worker increases your chances of being lonely, something our host Rebecca Seal dealt with and a feeling that led to the creation of The Solo Collective. Chartered Psychologist and Author of How to Build a Healthy Brain, Kimberley Wilson joins us for the series finale. We explore how we can stop it in its tracks by learning about loneliness and celebrate the working revolution as a united front instead. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Still WFH? The food writer Rebecca Seal has been doing it for more than a decade. Six years ago, however, she reached something close to breaking point: working until eight or nine at night, six days a week (plus Sunday mornings, when she's a regular on brunch TV). So she and her partner decided to change things. They set rules: no working or talking about work before breakfast; no working after 8pm; no talking about work after 8pm - and no working at weekends. They stuck to them - and things got better. Now she has written a book, Solo: How to Work Alone (and Not Lose Your Mind), about how to make WFH work for you. It's full of brilliant advice - I loved hearing about how she has managed to cut back her hours while also being more productive, how she copes with loneliness, and also how, as a food writer, she approaches dinner parties (top tip: always test the recipe). I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Buy the book: https://www.waterstones.com/book/solo/rebecca-seal/9781788164856 Edited by Chelsey Moore

If you've ever worked for a bigger business, you will be aware of the experience of immediately slotting into a structure of work that was in place before we arrived. The hours, the tools, the environment, etc., have already been set. We just need to learn what they are so we can do the job on day one. However, when you started, did you think about the structure and processes you need for your business to function? Rebecca Seal didn't and didn't know a single solo worker who did. In September 2020, Rebecca published “Solo”, which addresses what we gain but also miss when we shift from the structure of an office environment to the solitary confines of our homes or studios. It's a fantastic book full of the stories we will all recognise in ourselves as freelancers. In this episode, Rebecca shares some of those stories and talks about why she wrote the book, what she learned about herself as a freelancer while writing it, and how she sees freelancing evolving in the coming years. About Rebecca Seal Rebecca is an award-winning food, drink, lifestyle, and personal development writer, based in London. She also runs a photography studio, Kemble House. She has been freelancing for over 10 years and, in an attempt to help other solo workers navigate, survive, and thrive in the strange world of working alone, wrote Solo: How To Work Alone (And Not Lose Your Mind. It's an evidence-based book, pulling on behavioural science, organisation psychology, and economics. The book includes interviews from TED talkers, other solo workers, and many, many academics who specialise in work and well-being. As well as all this, Rebecca has also written eight cookbooks, many of which have been published in different languages. Her journalism is published worldwide in broadsheet newspapers and magazines, and she regularly appears on UK television and radio, as well as podcasts and in short documentary films.

Vibes are mixed up this week on the damn TickyOff. We begin with a solo intro by Sam which is as magnificent, insightful and flat out vibey as you'd expect without that heavy horse shaped vibe anchor weighing his vibe down. This is followed by a secretly recorded meeting between The Pidgin Boyz and Pidgin GM and Head chef Jack and Hamish. They discuss reopening Pidgin, the potential for London to move into Tier 3 and some thoughts on the current hospitality vibe in London. So many vibes. We thought a little honest peek behind a Pidgin shaped curtain might be of interest. We then move into the real vibe of the podcast with a brilliant guest, Rebecca Seal is here talking up a goddamn storm about her new book ‘Solo: How To Work Alone'. She also gets into poisonous printers, fractal patterns, why the 8 hour work day is a nonsense and why she carries a pot plant around with her at all times. It's some darn fascinating chat right here and as ever, you are at least somewhat, welcome. Here is a link to the Pidgin GoFundMe campaign: https://uk.gofundme.com/f/keep-pidgin-flying Anything you can chip in would be greatly, vastly, mightily, appreciated. Rebecca's book ‘Solo: How To Work Alone' is available via a hidden portal in the trunk of an old ash tree somewhere due east of here, also from bookshops both real, online, and probably imagined.
