I first saw Marcelo Tigre compete in a massive fight at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii. To this day the fight is the biggest fight in magnitude to ever take place on Oahu and the most historically remembered. The date was June 1st, 1999. Superbrawl Promoter T Jay Thompson had done a great job in capitalizing on the growing feud between Grappling Unlimited and Relson Gracie. This would all come to a head at Superbrawl 12. The Blaisdell Arena was sold out for the only time in history to date for an MMA event. The fight was a back and forth war that ended in a disqualification win for Egan Inoue. In this episode we talk about this fight, Marcelo's background and what he is doing now in Brazil. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/toddatkinsshow/message

I have the tremendous honor of having two very special black belts on the show, Dave Kama and Ryan Young. Dave Kama is part of the legendary "Dirty Dozen" aka the first non Brazilian black belts (Dave was actually number two), he also trained in the legendary Gracie Garage (yes it was literally in a garage) and he has been a Black Belt under Rickson Gracie and training BJJ for over 35 years. In 1993, Rickson asked Dave to take over as head instructor at the Rickson Gracie Laguna Niguel location. Dave has been running this location ever since. In 2012, upon Rickson's retirement, Dave officially changed the name of the school from Rickson Gracie Laguna Niguel to Kama Jiu-Jitsu, part of the Rickson Gracie Team of Academies. As for Ryan he trained under Relson Gracie in the '80s before training under Rickson and is now a third degree black belt under Dave Kama. Ryan was one of the first BJJ prolific YouTubers, he has hundreds of free videos to learn from. This interview was actually supposed to be with just Ryan but he told me if we could do it at 4 am my time he would have a surprise guest. And I was thrilled to have both Ryan and Dave on the show, quite the coup for the show. The depth of their knowledge of BJJ and being part of its history is just invaluable. They seem to be the lone voices left advocating for the Self Defense aspect of the art. I get the sense that having to infer that self defense is the most important part to learn of BJJ is just crazy to them. It makes me feel like they think that the BJJ community has lost its way, at one point Dave even says without the self defense learnings BJJ is a different art altogether, interesting food for thought. Some housekeeping notes, they did the interview on the built in microphone of an iPad pro so the audio is rough at times, I boosted levels as much as I could and spent weeks working on the audio but you may want to turn it up. Additionally, it was recorded at the Austin, TX academy so there is some training background noise at times. Marcelo Tigre was one of the combatants in the biggest MMA fight in Hawaii history along with Egan Inoue. This fight took place in June of 1999 at the Neal Blaisdell Center on Oahu. This fight was the culmination of a rivalry that was built on the back of the Pan Am riot between Grappling Unlimited and Relson Gracie. In this episode we talk about that rivalry and how Marcelo ended being the one to take part on the Relson side. We also talk about his gym on Oahu which he ran for 5 years and his institute in Brazil which is helping to provide for the less fortunate. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/todd-atkins8/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/todd-atkins8/support

Welcome to episode 95. I'm your host Gustavo Dantas, and today we have Relson Gracie's 4th-degree black belt Nathan Zigler. He has owned Gracie Arizona for over twenty years, besides being the owner of Cooperhead CrossFit. Nathan shared how organic was his process of making a living with jiu-jitsu. He just wanted to teach, and he didn't plan on having a jiu-jitsu business. However, his classes grew, and as he said, with a combination of luck, timing, hard work, and being surrounded by the right people, things started to shape up. When I asked him about what piece of advice he would give to a younger version of himself, his answer inspired me to title this episode: "Surround yourself with the right people." Stick around for my final thoughts after the interview when I expand on the topic Surround yourself with the right people. Stay tuned right after jiu-jitsu tribe's message. OSS!!
