Single hop IPAs are sometimes viewed as being a bit thin or uninteresting but recently we've had a number of really excellent ones, including several from Two Rabbits. Revision Brewing Company’s brewmaster and CEO hails from Knee Deep Brewing Company out of Auburn, CA - a company that he originally founded out of his garage in Sparks, Nevada. In July of 2015, Jeremy Warren (Founder and former Brewmaster of Knee Deep Brewing Company) decided to sell his shares of Knee Deep Brewing to his business partner and set out to start Revision Brewing Company where he could have total creative freedom. Warren is known for his world-class IPA’s, 2x IPAs and 3x IPAs and after only a year of opening the doors at Revision Brewing Company, the brewery took a gold medal win for Revision IPA in the American India Pale Ale Category, and DIPA won the silver medal in the Imperial India Pale Ale category at the 2018 World Beer Cup® awards. Only four other breweries in the history of the World Beer Cup® have medaled in both the American-Style India Pale Ale and the Imperial India Pale Ale category in the same year. Revision Brewing Company joins Russian River, Pizza Port, Noble Ale Works and Big Rock Chop House in this achievement. Luke 5: The Tax Collector & @revisionbrewing Planetary Fog DIPA This week on the podcast, we chat about having a tough week or tough time, who Jesus hung out with, what he said and did. The example he gave us was one of love, acceptance, forgiveness and healing... he also took time to get away from everything and spend some time in prayer and we need to make sure that we spend some time in prayer as well. Jesus also didn’t get lost in the religious or political “fog”, but instead, spent time with tax collectors, prostitutes, the poor and sick, and loved, accepted, forgave and healed them. That’s an example I want to follow. The only “fog” I want to be in, is @revisionbrewing Planetary Fog DIPA. This DIPA is brewers with Amarillo, Mosaic, and Citra hops and gives a nice fruity punch, that’s very smooth and fresh. A perfect companion for a summer BBQ or a late night pizza. Episode Notes It’s the Two Minute Beer Review!I’m Andrew Burkum, and once again I’m your companion as we face down that massive craft brew aisle in search of the hidden treasures we’ve been missing out on all along. This week we’re taking a look at Baggage Wagon Northeast Style Double IPA by Revision Brewing in Sparks, NV. Will this one get us down the road or will the wheels come off? Let’s find out!Baggage Wagon is a nice lemon yellow with a healthy amount of haze in the pour. It smells of grapefruit and lemon peel with no notable malt presence. All of the scent contribution from the hops is juicy—nothing floral in there at all.But what about the taste? Baggage wagon drinks as juicy as it smells—the fruit is very far forward in the taste. It has a very pleasant bitterness that is layered throughout bringing excellent balance to the beer from beginning to end. It’s nice and bright around the edges, but there’s a woodsiness that makes me think of the deep outdoors—but it’s not piney like what you might get from some other IPAs. The fruitiness that starts citrusy up front eventually resolves over time into more tropical flavors and I really like that. Baggage Wagon succeeds where so many other beers fail these days—that is in distinguishing itself in a seemingly-never ending parade of new IPA offerings. It’s a different spin and one that is one hundred percent Two Minute Beer Review recommended! It’s also 8.5% ABV, so it will keep you feeling happy all the way to the last drop. Well that’s all for this week, but I hope you’ll join me next week as I try Maui Waui IPA by Altamont Beer Works in Livermore, CA. Is this one an island paradise in a can or will it wipe out? Episode Notes It’s the Two Minute Beer Review!I’m Andrew Burkum, and once again I’m your companion as we face down that massive craft brew aisle in search of the hidden treasures we’ve been missing out on all along. This week we’re taking a look at Colossus of Clout Red Ale by Strike Brewing Co. in San Jose, CA. Will this beer score a giant statue in its honor? Let’s find out!Colossus of Clout pours brownish red and just a little bit cloudy. The scent is nutty and brown—warm, with just a faint hint of caramel. But what about the taste? The beer is warm and earthy, but not dense in any way. In fact, it tastes almost exactly as it smells. No false advertising here! There’s just a tiny bit of sweetness up front and there’s really not any bitterness to be had anywhere here. The aftertaste comes on strong with that nice nutty, malty flavor. Colossus of Clout is a decent drink but don’t look for it to do anything particularly different for the style. There’s nothing in particular that really jumps out and sets it apart. That being said, if you’re a fan of this type of beer I can guarantee that this is one that you’re going to like!Well that’s all for this week, but I hope you’ll join me next week as I try Baggage Wagon Northeast style Double IPA by Revision Brewing in Sparks, NV! Herlinda Heras is in today with Sam Holloway, a Portland, Oregon based brewing business consultant, and Steve Waters, owner of Backwoods Brewery in Carson, Washington. Mark Carpenter is away this week. Herlinda is just back from China and she brought some rice wine back, which she says is not like Sake, the Japanese product. Sake is brewed like beer with Koji, their type of yeast. They talk about Wilibees in Santa Rosa and Petaluma that always has a great selection of beers. Herlinda mentions Revision Brewing, voted the #3 new brewery in the US and #1 in Nevada, and that Wilibees always has some of their product in stock. Sam Holloway & Steve Waters Herlinda Heras has brought Sam Holloway today. He is based in Portland, Oregon and has come for the California Craft Brewers Conference. His company is called Crafting A Strategy dot com. They are an online learning community for serious brewing entrepreneurs. He is a college professor with a PhD in Strategic Management and is part owner of a brewery. He has spent his life studying breweries. He has rewritten and publishes an MBA-level 180 digital lessons on brewing business. Steve Waters, CEO of Backwoods Brewing Company in Carson, Washington, is also here. He is also there for the CCBC. Carson is located in the Columbia River gorge. They started in July of 2012 and is family owned and operated. He was a student of Sam’s at the University of Portland and contacted him when his family was ready to start the brewery. They also have a new tasting room in Portland. Delightful Food and Drink in China Herlinda Heras was recently in Shanghai, the most populous city in the world. She moderated the first Olive Oil Summit ever in China. She got to moderate the Top Chefs of China competition and she also co-hosted the first China Brewers Association Beer Awards. They start tasting a Chinese beer that she brought back. Sam first went to China in 2015 for a beer conference and he has seen the numbers of breweries grow from a handful to hundreds and that Chinese consumers are discovering good flavorful beer. It is the world’s largest beer consuming country. They talk a little about Baiju, a strong distilled liquor popular in China, that Herlinda compared to vodka or everclear. Then they taste a Chinese rice wine, brown in color. It’s fermented rice, but not brewed and cooked with yeast, as with beer and sake. Here, they actually let the rice ferment, like grapes or apples. It is about 15 or 16 percent alcohol, like a strong wine. Herlinda describes the pork and shrimp soup dumplings that she had and Sam Holloway agrees it’s one of the best things he’s ever had. Her friends took her to all the best local hole-in-the-wall restaurants. “The best food I’ve ever had in the world was in Shanghai,” says Herlinda. Steve Waters says that the brewers he most admires are also great cooks, who are interested in flavors. Solving Problems in the Brewing Business Sam Holloway describes his business of consulting to breweries, helping them make their dream an operational success. In one scenario, a small brewer needs to operate on profitable and predictable margins with the core beers in its product line. But they also want to produce the creative beers, which have business margins that are harder to predict. He posed the problem to his student entrepreneurs and within a day he had some brewery CEOs describing how they approached the problem. Herlinda tells about the proliferation of money and wealth in Shanghai. Since he is going to teach in China, he will be trying to help breweries in the Chinese market where the large breweries are owned by the government. Getting a brewer’s license is very difficult, but they have luxury restaurants that brew beer on the premises.

This week on Fresh Hop Cinema, we cover what might just be our favorite movie of the year in Greta Gerwig’s “Ladybird.” The film follows Christine “Ladybird” McPherson as she pushes through her senior year at her Catholic high school in Sacramento, CA. Finding your way into adulthood is never an easy task and “Ladybird” explores what can happen when this already nuanced time of self-discovery in one’s life gets complicated, and often strained, by tensions at home, the fluidity of friendships, an ever-changing romantic landscape and the pressure of “what happens next.” We drink a slew of beers including:

1- “Jewel Box,” a NE IPA from Revision Brewing in Sparks, NV which exceeds our expectations. 2- “Two Hearted Ale” from Bells Brewery out of Comstock, MI. With a history of accolades (including recently having beaten Pliny the Elder in a national taste test), our hopes for this beer were high. Sadly, we weren’t sure this ale was up to par.

3- Our friend and patron of the show John Wollam drops in for a surprise beer review. Stay tuned!
