Elaina Zuker is the president of Elaina Zuker Associates in Montréal, Canada. She has taught seminars to hundreds of employees and managers at major corporations such as AT&T, IBM, American Express and MCI International, and is a frequent keynote speaker at conferences and industry events. She is the author of six books on leadership, management and communication. Her best-selling book, “The Seven Secrets of Influence” (McGraw-Hill), the recent Main Selection for the Business Week Book Club, has been translated into four languages. Elaina is an expert on influence and defines it as the effect of an idea or person on the values, attitudes, and behavior of others. She believes that anyone can learn and master the skill of influence, but it must have honorable intentions and positive effects. Elaina also notes that positive influence must be transparent and not manipulative. On today's episode Elaina and I discuss the importance of influence in business, the distinction between influence and manipulation, and the six different influence styles. Elaina also shares her program, based on her extensive business and management experience, that teaches practical and usable influence skills to anyone. Key Takeaways The definition of influence and how it differs from manipulationThe Importance of strong influence skills for salespeople and entrepreneursDiscussing the need for influence skills in arranging meetings with potential customersThe 6 different influence styles and the importance of understanding themA poll that Elaina conducted on LinkedIn about biggest challenges in influencing today; with upper management being the highest polling choiceThe formula for influence and its two components; attentiveness and flexibilityUnderstanding how different departments in an organization may benefit from the same skills Timestamps [00:04:34] Influence is the effect of an idea on a person. [00:25:10] Customizable e-learning program with lifetime access. [00:28:52] Get people in a room; training skills. Quotes Influence vs. Manipulation: "Influence is a skill that anyone can learn, practice and master...influence is a power. It's like electricity or nuclear power. And it can be used for good or bad." Why influence is important in today's work environment: "We're all being asked to be more innovative. We're all being asked to be more innovative to come up with new ways of doing things, new cost-effective ways. And I don't know about you, but I have a drawer full of dusty ideas that never saw the light of day because I didn't have the influence skills to persuade somebody to make it happen." The Importance of Influence Skills During Zoom Calls: "If you don't have good influence skills, what are you gonna do in minute 1 of that Zoom call? So that's where influence skills come in. And especially these days, because we're kind of limited, we're no longer driving 30 minutes to go visit somebody for the half hour. We have to kind of make our case over Zoom. And so it's a lot harder to get cues from the person you're trying to influence." Dr. Charles Zuker is a Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics and of Neuroscience at Columbia University and a Principal Investigator at Columbia's Zuckerman Institute. Dr. Zuker explains why our sense of taste is so evolutionarily critical to our survival; how taste was fundamentally misunderstood until about 20 years ago; how our stomachs tell our brains to go for real sugar instead of artificial sweeteners; why the Zuckerman Institute and the Jerome L. Greene Science Center is such a fabulous place to study neuroscience; and why the Institute has artists-in-residence working alongside the scientists. Also, the video of controlling thirst in mice using light that is referenced in the podcast can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z51OGBaWko Note: the Zuckerman Institute's air filtration system is top notch, but caused a hum in the background that we couldn't edit out.

We discuss the neural circuits of taste, the “gut-brain axis,” the basis of food cravings and the key difference between wanting (craving) and liking (perceiving) sugar. We also explore how taste perception relates to specific food satiety, thirst, to our emotions, and expectation. We also consider how sugar containing and highly-processed foods can hijack the natural balance of the taste and digestive systems. The Makeup Insider is a weekly one-on-one podcast exploring the life and career of makeup artists, hosted by freelance mua Vanessa Barney. This week: getting personal with Ellie Zuker, makeup artist, hairstylist and life-long learner. Learning is incredibly important. No matter what industry you're in. The thing about learning is, while you may not take everything in – you take onboard the information you think is important and you go on to develop your own ideas, style and success based on what you've learnt. You should never stop learning. Whether it's a course, a masterclass or assisting – so long as you're learning something new. Ellie is a life-long learner.

www.resource-insider.com If you are a mining investor you need to know about Pucara Gold. In this podcast, I interview Steve Zuker, CEO, and Ken Balleweg, VP Exploration, of Pucara Gold. Steve is a geologist with over 30 years of experience in economic geology and exploration in Asia, and North and South America. His last 22 years have been focused on exploration in Peru. Ken is also an exploration geologist with more than 30 years of exploration and production experience and a world expert on HSE deposits. Pucara Gold is focused on exploring for High Sulphidation Epithermal (HSE) gold deposits in Peru. These type of deposits are some of the most profitable to mine on the planet and can be massive. The Pucara board consists of some of the most well-respected industry names in the business including: George Salamis, David Awram, Keith Laskowski, and Andy Swarthout. The list of investors backing this company is even more impressive. In this Podcast we discuss: Why are Pucara's undrilled HSE targets so prospective? Does this opportunity really have a 100x return potential? What is happening on site with the current work program? What should we be looking for out of upcoming drill results? There are few opportunities to sit down with geologists of this calibre, because frankly there aren't many. Pucara is an investment opportunity that I believe every serious resource investor needs to look at. ***Follow Resource Insider*** iTunes: podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast Spotify: open.spotify.com/show/3ntPCBk Twitter: twitter.com/Jamie_Keech LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/jamiekeech/

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.08.10.244442v1?rss=1 Authors: Sato, K., Akiyama, M., Sakakibara, Y. Abstract: RNA secondary structure prediction is one of the key technologies for unveiling the essential roles of functional non-coding RNAs. Although machine learning-based rich-parametrized models achieved extremely high performance in prediction accuracy, a possibility of the risk of overfitting for such a model has been reported. We propose a new algorithm for predicting RNA secondary structures using deep learning with thermodynamic integrations, which enable us robust predictions. Our algorithm computes folding scores for the nearest neighbor loops using a deep neural network. Similar to our previous work, the folding scores are integrated with the traditional thermodynamic parameters to enable robust predictions. Then, the Zuker-style dynamic programming is employed to find an optimal secondary structure that maximizes the folding score. We also propose a new regularization, called the thermodynamic regularization, to train our deep neural network with avoiding the overfit to training data. Our algorithm (MXfold2) archived the most robust and accurate predictions in the computational experiments assuming the discovery of new non-coding RNAs. The source code of MXfold2 and the datasets used in the experiments are available at https://github.com/keio-bioinformatics/mxfold2/. Copy rights belong to original authors. On this episode of Slut or Nut: The Podcast, Kelly chats with retired Ontario Judge, writer and teacher Marvin Zuker about his verdict and sentencing in the rape trial of R. vs Ururyar, the case featured in Slut or Nut the Diary of a Rape Trial. Zuker is also in the documentary film. Kelly asks him “Should judges be feminists?” The answer isn’t so simple. One can’t help but think that part of the process is broken. The beautiful verdict that Zuker wrote was overturned in the appeal court. The man accused of raping Mandi Gray never did community service, and he never served his 18-month sentence. He never had restrictions about being around females and drinking alcohol. Instead, he got a one-year protection order - stipulating that he would not go near Mandi Gray- also known in Canada as a Peace Bond. She could have gotten the same thing just from a stalking charge, or a harassment or trespassing charge. Not only did he not serve his sentence, but the maximum time the peace bond could be legally applied, was only for 1 year. Now that year is up. Now Mandi faces see him around the corner, in the hallways, and at the food court of her workplace, as he has also returned to work there. So I ask you, if the system is broken, which it appears it is, what now for victims of sexual assault? What now for the average person wanting to help prevent sexual assault? Changing the legal system sounds impossibly hard, but what is the alternative? Protests? Doxing? Public Shaming? Just what is the point of spending hours reporting to the police, going through a trial, having your personal details laid public, and possibly missing hours of work - just to have the person who assaulted you return to work with you a year later after the peace bond expires. And why can’t we have peace bonds that last forever? Until the other person dies? Why would you need to go through the bureaucratic headache of renewing a protective order every year? I just don’t get it…. Link to the full verdict discussed: http://www.documentcloud.org/documents/2998128-318957546-Full-Text-Justice-Marvin-Zuker-S.html This episode features music by Lora Bidner and Jennifer Holub. Through the years, we've been asked a lot about natural building materials and how they relate to building science. And frankly, it's a nuanced conversation that requires a lot of unpacking preconceived notions about what constitutes a good product (from the perspective of liability, ecology, availability, serviceability, durability, etc.). In this episode of the podcast, we interview Brad King of Earthbound Builders in Austin, TX. They're endeavoring to make natural building materials part of the main stream building processes rather than a custom, "hippie" solution. Check it out, think on it, and let us know your thoughts.Brad King & Earthbound BuildersBrad King is a builder and specialist in natural building products, including clay plaster finishes. His expertise is robust and he is a great resource for natural building questions and projects.Brad's company, Earthbound Builders, is a worker-owned collective of builders based in Austin, Texas. They focus on providing high quality, environmentally responsible construction services. Using natural building methods, local materials, and sustainable design principles, they create spaces that are healthier to live in, more beautiful to look at, and better performing than conventional alternatives. Earthbound Builders is committed to collaboration and quality.Resources-Dr. DirtAs mentioned in the episode, read more about Dr. Clay Robinson, PhD and his work with soil science education in the United States. The resources are primarily designed for kids K-12, but the research in the soil science world has profound impacts not only on buildings, but on agriculture and larger sustainability issues.-American ClayFrom the American Clay website:"American Clay plasters are a natural way to finish any interior. Non-toxic and made in the U.S.A., our plasters are a healthy alternative to paint, wallpaper, cement, acrylic and gypsum plasters. American Clay offers eight plaster finishes, hundreds of colors, unlimited textures, and a depth not found in other finishes."-Clay Sand Strawwww.claysandstraw.com provides design, consultation, education and construction for straw bale, cob, adobe and timber frame buildings. Please reach out to them for natural building related questions and projects.-Ann SussmanAnn Sussman is interested in how buildings influence our behavior. Her book, Cognitive Architecture, written with Justin B. Hollander, reveals the unconscious tendencies at work when we navigate the world around us. These ‘hidden’ predispositions reflect our long evolutionary trip per recent research in psychology and neuroscience, and can help explain why we favor certain urban conditions and building configurations and shun others. Understanding ourselves better, Sussman believes, can lead us to build more humanely and ultimately, more successfully for people.-New York Times Article On Cob HousesFrom the article:LAGO VISTA, Tex. — As a senior systems analyst at the University of Texas, Austin, Gary Zuker lives in a high-tech world all week. But when the weekend arrives, Mr. Zuker retreats to a home that’s about as low-tech as possible. His getaway is a 900-square-foot cottage that he built himself out of straw and clay. To come upon it, tucked away on two acres in the wooded Hill Country outside Austin, is to find a storybook dwelling that could be Geppetto’s workshop or a Hobbit house...

Science journalism generally focuses on new discoveries. But this leaves out a part of the process that will make or break you as a scientist: how do you come up with the right questions to ask in the first place? In today’s episode, we talk to Charles Zuker of Columbia University about this process. Listen to find out the two questions he asks to determine whether an experiment is worth doing.
Host Ben Rice travels to Applegate, CA, to chat with longtime friends Jackie Zuker (environmental biologist), Andy Zuker (owner of The Moving Crew, sole member of one-man band ThunderVision) and Nik Jacinto (jack of all trades, Renaissance man) to discuss what makes a family (spoiler: it ain't blood) over non-regional beers (Deschutes Abyss 2015, Victory Storm King, Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald). In their 2nd official comedy writers roundtable, @theNuzzy & @theguydf welcome to the show a couple of the creative minds behind 2 of the funniest shows ever... Seinfeld and Modern Family! Yes, Seinfeld's very own Peter Mehlman returns for his 2nd stint on DecentlyFunny.com and does not disappoint... And new comer to the show, the brilliant and hilariously funny Emmy Award winning Modern Family writer, Danny Zuker leaves the roundtable in stitches. We learn a lot about comedy writing, for example comedy writers don't want to read your scripts because you're not funny... also comedy writers don't just write for one character, they write for them all... only an idiot would think that. A few questions you will enjoy the answers to... Which Howard Stern Show staffer was Danny Zuker's roommate for a while? Which actress/reality star does Nuzzy issue an apology to? What is Peter Mehlman's next project? ...and maybe most importantly, how do you pronounce poinsettia? So listen to Nuzzy, Guy, Mehlman and Zuker... a real Podern Family!
