Keen On Democracy
The Authoritarian Pincer: How Both Left and Right Threaten Free Speech in America

Keen On Democracy

It's not just the MAGA or the Woke crowd. According to Greg Lukianoff, CEO of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), free speech in America is under existential threat from all political sides. While he's long criticized campus cancel culture from the left, he now opposes Trump's coercive targeting of big law firms, media companies, and universities. The Stanford Law trained Lukianoff argues that Trump's actions—removing security clearances, barring lawyers from federal buildings, and threatening media mergers—violate constitutional principles. Five Key Takeaways * Bipartisan Authoritarianism: Lukianoff fights free speech threats from both sides—campus cancel culture from the left that he's criticized for years, and now Trump's government coercion of law firms, media, and universities from the right.* Trump's Legal Warfare: The administration is removing security clearances from lawyers who opposed Trump, barring them from federal buildings (including courthouses), and threatening media companies' business deals—unprecedented attacks on legal and press freedom.* Institutional Cowardice: Major law firms like Paul Weiss capitulated quickly, offering millions in pro bono services to Trump, while others like Covington & Burling stood firm. Media responses have been mixed, with some caving under pressure.* Free Speech is Fragile: Lukianoff argues free speech isn't humanity's default state—it requires constant defense and can easily revert to authoritarianism when not actively protected by institutions and individuals.* Technology Accelerates Crisis: Social media and AI are speeding up existing problems of polarization and institutional decay, making the current free speech crisis more acute and unpredictable than previous eras.Greg Lukianoff is an attorney, New York Times best-selling author, and the President and CEO of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE). He is the author of Unlearning Liberty: Campus Censorship and the End of American Debate, Freedom From Speech, and FIRE's Guide to Free Speech on Campus. He co-authored The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure with Jonathan Haidt. Most recently Greg co-authored The Canceling of the American Mind: Cancel Culture Undermines Trust and Threatens Us All—But There Is a Solution with Rikki Schlott. Greg is also an Executive Producer of Can We Take a Joke? (2015), a feature-length documentary that explores the collision between comedy, censorship, and outrage culture, both on and off campus, and of Mighty Ira: A Civil Liberties Story (2020), an award-winning feature-length film about the life and career of former ACLU Executive Director Ira Glasser.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting the daily KEEN ON show, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy interview series. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. The newest rules will raise the cost of new trucks by more than $50,000. The regulators say these rules are important to stop pollution. That's dumb, says Wanner, “In 1980, 1 truck produced as much as 60 trucks today.” “So, we want people to buy new trucks,” I ask? “You want people to buy new trucks,” responds Wanner. “But if you put these costs on us that we cannot afford, we're going to just run the older trucks.” That's something the regulators don't think about. In fact, there's a lot they don't think about. Their decision hurts truck sellers, won't stop pollution, could be unconstitutional, and will only get more expensive when California mandates "all electric." Generation Z is now entering the workforce, and free speech levels have never been so low in America. Coincidence? We think not. Legions of Gen Zers are bringing the totalitarian ideas they were spoon-fed in university — CRT, DEI, and other Neo-Marxist ideas — into the American mainstream. As a result, we are at a peak cancel culture moment. How did this happen, who is to blame, and most importantly, how do we close Pandora's box? Our guests — authors of a new book on cancel culture — suggest we cannot, but we can move forward and begin to right some of these wrongs. It starts with raising kids who aren't cancelers, keeping corporations out of the cult of cancellation, fixing K-12, and reforming higher education.Greg Lukianoff is the president of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) and one of the country's most passionate defenders of free expression. Together with Rikki Schlott, he is the author of The Canceling of the American Mind. He has written on free speech issues in the nation's top newspapers, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post, and was executive producer of the documentaries Can We Take a Joke? and Mighty Ira. Lukianoff earned his undergraduate degree from American University and his law degree from Stanford.Rikki Schlott is a New York City-based journalist and political commentator. She is a research fellow at FIRE, host of the Lost Debate podcast, a columnist at the New York Post, and a regular contributor to numerous publications and television programs. Her commentary focuses on free speech, campus culture, civil liberties, and youth issues from a Generation Z perspective.Download the transcript here.Subscribe to the WTH substack here.Check out Greg and Rikki's book here.

He even shares the politics of the majority of the psychology department. But on his podcast, Inbar had expressed relatively mild concerns over the ideological pressures that DEI statements impose and wondered aloud whether they do harm to diversity of thought. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (01/08/2024): 3:05pm- Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spent several days in an intensive care unit at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland following elective surgery—though the precise surgery has not been disclosed. Alarmingly, the White House—including President Joe Biden—was not informed of Secretary Austin's incapacitation for more than three days. Equally concerning, while Secretary Austin was in intensive care, Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks was on vacation in Puerto Rico. Will anyone be held accountable for this disastrous breakdown in communication? Secretary Austin released a statement on Saturday addressing the issue: “I am very glad to be on the mend and look forward to returning to the Pentagon soon. I also understand the media concerns about transparency and I recognize I could have done a better job ensuring the public was appropriately informed. I commit to doing better.”  3:30pm- While appearing on ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said it should be up to the states to determine whether or not Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump appears on primary ballots. 3:35pm- While speaking with Symone Sanders on MSNBC, Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said states should take “very aggressive action” to keep Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump off their ballot. 3:40pm- #1 Global Best-Selling Author Terry Hayes joins The Rich Zeoli Show to announce he'll be participating in a 1210 WPHT Speaker Series event on February 7th at Rosemont College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Greg Lukianoff is a First Amendment lawyer by training. During his education he began to see how, even among organizations ostensibly created to help protect free speech, how actual free speech was improperly being conflated with harassment or bullying. When he went to work as a legal director of the nascent Foundation for Individual Rights in Education in around 2000, he quickly discovered that in academia, the one place where free speech and open inquiry should be valued above all else, actual free speech was under attack. In the intervening two decades, during which he rose to become director of that Foundation, now renamed to encompass the fact that the attacks on free speech that began in academia have proliferated throughout our society, he has actively worked to fight these attacks. Beyond his legal work, he has become a prolific writer. His 2018 book, co-written with Jonathan Haidt, entitled The Coddling of the American Mind, was influential in encouraging debate and discussion regarding the origins of the victimization mentality that was becoming prevalent in Western Society.I have been admirer of Greg's for some time, and have wanted to have a dialogue with him on the podcast. This year, with Rikki Schlott, Greg published The Canelling of the American Mind: How Cancel Culture Undermines Trust, Destroys Institutions and Threatens us All, and it provided us the ideal opportunity to get together to discuss both his own personal experiences , and also the general concerns we both have about the issues that form the heart of the new book. What followed was a fascinating conversation about issues we should all care about. Regular readers of Critical Mass and listeners to The Origins Podcast will be aware of some of the examples and concerns we discussed, but I expect will nevertheless be surprised by the ubiquitous infiltration of cancel culture ideas into our society. We actually begin by defining Cancel Culture, a term that has often been misused and misunderstood in the popular media, and then discuss a variety of examples, before closing with a brief discussion of the ways that we can possibly combat it to produce a more tolerant, democratic society, and to save higher education as well. I hope you are provoked, enlightened, and energized by the conversation. As always, an ad-free video version of this podcast is also available to paid Critical Mass subscribers. Meanwhile, George Santos became the sixth member of the House to be expelled in Congressional history, making the GOP's already slim majority in the House even smaller — leading to some concerns that Republicans in the House may have even more trouble passing their agenda. At home, concerns over the southern border are top of mind -- as calls for better resources and funding remain an insistent ask from Republican lawmakers. On the Rundown, the youngest female to ever serve in the Senate and Alabama's first female Senator, Katie Britt, discusses why she agrees a ceasefire cannot happen until Hamas is defeated and how the White House's inability to acknowledge the border crisis stops them from fixing it. She also discusses her new book, 'God Calls Us To Do Hard Things: Lessons from the Alabama Wiregrass,' which shares her story and urges Americans to better for themselves and the nation. Since the pandemic normalized working from home, office spaces have been less occupied, with one report even showing office occupancy rates in major cities are nearly half their pre-pandemic levels. The Biden administration has announced it will try to convert commercial real estate to residential housing to help with affordability. Economist and business professor at University of Maryland, Peter Morici tells the Rundown this effort is unrealistic. He joins to break down the threat of a commercial real estate crash, how the burden of the crisis could fall to mid-sized banks, and the biggest obstacles to converting office buildings into residential housing. Cancel culture—the term and the practice—has left its mark on American culture, business, academia and society at all levels over the past few years. Was it inevitable? Is it permanent? Or is it, as authors Greg Lukianoff and Rikki Schlott argue, a dysfunctional part of how Americans battle for power, status and dominance? They say it is just a symptom of a much larger problem: the use of cheap rhetorical tactics to "win" arguments without actually winning arguments. Drawing on data and research on the phenomenon of cancel culture and how it works, along with many examples of how both the left and the right use it to silence their enemies, Lukianoff and Schlott have concrete steps to offer that they say can reclaim a free speech culture in every realm. Lukianoff and Schlott, authors of the bestselling Coddling of the American Mind, return with their new book The Canceling of the American Mind. Join us to hear their description of cancel culture and their prescription for curing it. To hear more, visit davidlat.substack.comWhen I wrote an op-ed for the Boston Globe titled Big Law's Cancel Culture, I got an earful from folks who complained about the use of the term “cancel culture” (which was picked by the Globe's copy editors, not by me). There are many folks who argue the “cancel culture” doesn't exist or, if it does, it's greatly exaggerated. While I have concerns about the term “cancel culture”—it carries baggage, causing some people to stop listening—I still do use it. My approach to language is more descriptive than prescriptive, so if a term or phrase is useful, it's generally okay by me. When you say “cancel culture,” people know what you're talking about, and I don't know of an alternative term that refers to exactly the same phenomenon.Cancel-culture denial tends to be more common on the left. I wonder, then, whether some progressives might be more willing to acknowledge it now that some on the left are arguably getting “canceled” for expressing pro-Hamas, pro-Palestine, or anti-Israel views. (Please note my use of the term “arguably”; I'm not here to debate the merits of these controversies, which are very fact-specific, and I condemn anything that crosses the line into threats, harassment, and other speech not protected by the First Amendment.)Indeed, cancellation comes from all sides—a major theme of The Canceling of the American Mind, an excellent new book by Greg Lukianoff, president and CEO of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), and Rikki Schlott, a columnist for the New York Post. Lukianoff is left of center and Schlott is right of center, but they agree that cancel culture is real—as they demonstrate in their book, before offering possible responses. If you're concerned about free speech, cancel culture, and related issues, then you will enjoy my interview of Greg Lukianoff—one of the most eloquent, steadfast defenders of the First Amendment and free-speech values, for more than 20 years. Thanks to Greg for speaking with me, for writing this book, and for defending the freedom of speech and thought in our great nation.Show Notes:* Greg Lukianoff bio, The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression* The Canceling of the American Mind: Cancel Culture Undermines Trust and Threatens Us All―But There Is a Solution, by Greg Lukianoff and Rikki Schlott* Sick of Cancel Culture? Congressman Mike Johnson (R-LA) was elected Speaker of the House on Wednesday. After 22 days, which included multiple votes, both publicly on the House floor and privately among the Republican conference, the House GOP coalesced around the four-term representative. Republican strategist and co-founder of South & Hill Strategies, Colin Reed, joins the Rundown to discuss how the last three weeks of the GOP's speaker election chaos in Congress have impacted the party's long-term prospects. He explains Speaker Johnson's difficult task of leading a divided caucus, how support for Israel became a unifying bipartisan cause within Congress, and what tactics House Republicans are likely to use to regain the trust and confidence of 2024 voters on the horizon. Last month, four Iranians were apprehended at the southern border amid a surge of illegal migrant crossings. Lawmakers are growing concerned about the possibility of terrorists entering the U.S. through the country's open border. Over 150 non-U.S. citizens on the terrorist watchlist were encountered at the border in fiscal year 2023. Kansas Senator Roger Marshall (R-KS) joins the Rundown to discuss why he introduced legislation to declare an invasion at the southern border, why he wants expedited asylum, and why he thinks Ukraine and Israel funding should be separate. Get your tickets to meet Peter Boghossian + Michael Shellenberger: https://skeptic.com/event Cancel Culture is a new phenomenon, and The Canceling of the American Mind is the first book to codify it and survey its effects. From the team that brought you the bestselling Coddling of the American Mind comes hard data and research on what cancel culture is and how it works, along with hundreds of new examples showing the left and the right both working to silence their enemies. The Canceling of the American Mind will change how you view cancel culture. Rather than a moral panic, we should consider it a dysfunctional part of how Americans battle for power, status, and dominance. Cancel culture is just one symptom of a much larger problem: the use of cheap rhetorical tactics to “win” arguments without actually winning arguments. After all, why bother refuting your opponents when you can just take away their platform or career? Shermer, Lukianoff and Schlott discuss: • the definition of Cancel Culture • The Henny Youngman Principle: “Compared to what?” • Cancel Culture as imagined moral panic • Cancel Culture on the political Left/Right and on social media • free speech law vs. norms • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) • sensitivity training • bias hotlines and silencing of speech • pluralistic ignorance • The 4 Great Untruths • Jean Twenge's theory of generational change • solutions to Cancel Culture. Greg Lukianoff is the president of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) and one of the country's most passionate defenders of free expression. His law degree is from Stanford. He worked for the ACLU of Northern California, the Organization for Aid to Refugees, and the EnvironMentors Project before joining FIRE in 2001. Rikki Schlott is a New York City-based journalist and political commentator. She is a research fellow at FIRE, host of the Lost Debate podcast, a columnist at the New York Post, and a regular contributor to numerous publications and television programs. Her commentary focuses on free speech, campus culture, civil liberties, and youth issues from a Generation Z perspective.

In THE CANCELING OF THE AMERICAN MIND: Cancel Culture Undermines Trust, Destroys Institutions, and Threatens Us All-But There is a Solution (October 10, 2023/$29.99 hardcover), Greg Lukianoff (co-author of the bestseller The Coddling of the American Mind) and Rikki Schlott offer the first accurate survey of the phenomenon of Cancel Culture since it exploded onto the scene in 2014. Cancel culture is a destructive force that has upended lives, ruined careers, undermined companies, hindered research, destroyed trust in institutions, and plunged us into an ever-worsening culture war. What at first seemed like just another bit of campus craziness has spread far beyond universities. It now infects journalism, the arts, nonprofits, K-12 education, and even medicine. More and more, modern discourse focuses on a moralistic evaluation of the speaker rather than on the merit and validity of their ideas. "If you can show someone to be 'bad' by any measure, you don't have to listen to them anymore," Lukianoff and Schlott note. "Today, basically anything can be used to dismiss someone as 'bad' depending on your political orientation-from dubbing them 'conservative' to accusing them of being 'woke.'" The authors note that over the last several decades, the institutions tasked with teaching us how to argue productively have failed to do so-most notably, American higher education. At the same time, the rise of social media has made every institution, every individual, and every idea subject to the scrutiny of millions of eyes-and vulnerable to being torn down. "Personal attacks, dismissive clichés, and an ever-growing body of taboos abound in virtual discourse," the authors write. "These destructive methods of argumentation caught on like wildfire for a simple reason: they help people assert moral superiority and 'win' arguments by simply shutting down the other side..Why bother meaningfully refuting one's opponents when canceling them is an easier option? Just take away their platform or career. Nobody else will dare to tread the same ground once you make an example of them." The good news is that there are concrete solutions. "We don't have to argue like this," the authors note. "We can choose to discuss problems in a solutions-oriented way. We can declare a truce with our political opponents and set some ground rules that might help us survive-or even thrive-as a nation. And we can start to appreciate the benefits of living in a country as ideologically diverse as our own."

The authors note that over the last several decades, the institutions tasked with teaching us how to argue productively have failed to do so-most notably, American higher education.

Greg Lukianoff, President of the Foundation For Individual Rights And Expression (FIRE) and author of the new book, “The Canceling Of The American Mind,” visits A Special Place to explain once and for all that cancel culture is real. For the much-anticipated followup to the seminal “The Coddling Of The American Mind,” Greg teamed up with 23-year-old wunderkind Rikki Schlott to show how cancel culture is much more than a moral panic. In fact, it's a manifestation of the social dysfunction that results from people batting for power and status in a culture that has come to value grievance over resilience. And in case you find yourself in arguments with people who take the position that Cancel Culture Doesn't Exist Because Louis CK Is Still Performing™, Greg cites several recent examples of blatant speech suppression (including at Stanford Law School) that you'll want to write down and keep in your back pocket. Finally, as FIRE co-sponsored the recent Free Press debate in L.A. about whether the sexual revolution failed (in which Sarah and her partner Grimes DESTROYED gently but definitively toppled the opposition), Greg and the womyn/girlx do some Monday morning quarterbacking of the event and also discuss the confounding press coverage. GUEST BIO:Greg Lukianoff is an attorney, New York Times best-selling author, and the President and CEO of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE). Jonathan is the author of many books including "The Happiness Hypothesis", "The Righteous Mind", and "The Coddling of the American Mind" with his co-author Gregory Lukianoff.  Greg Lukianoff is the president of FIRE which is the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education and probably the pre-eminent defender of free speech on college campuses. Greg is also the producer of several documentaries about free speech and is also a trained lawyer. Rikki Schlott is a columnist for the New York Post, a fellow at FIRE, a contributor at Reason Magazine, and the host of the Lost Debate Podcast.  We all discuss what has changed since Jonathan and Greg published "The Coddling of the American Mind" back in 2018. We talk about the effect of social media on political polarization and mental health. We also discuss Jonathan's recent viral Atlantic essay called "Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid", and many other related topics. Unfortunately, because of the constraints of the live event, this is a shorter podcast than usual. However, I'm getting Jonathan back on the podcast very soon to have a full-length discussion about all this stuff. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Rikki Schlott, co-host of the Lost Debate podcast, joins Bridget as a representative of Gen Z. They discuss coming of age during the Trump years - a time when political polarization reached a fever pitch - and then how a pandemic changed the established norms on them. They cover Rikki's path after leaving college due to the pandemic, how she wants to bring a voice to the centrist Gen-Z perspective that exists but isn't reflected at all in media or social media, her worries about her generation's hostility to different vantage points and opinions, how her dad keeps her connected to a broader sense of history, her disillusionment with both the left and the right, and how the pandemic liberated a lot of young people from the achievement loop that they were stuck in, but also robbed them of very formative experiences in their lives.

The Lost Debate team, Ravi Gupta, Cory Bradford & Rikki Schlott, sit down with Bridget to discuss the mission behind The Lost Debate podcast program and the intention to create a space and media company that brings different people together to have conversations. They discuss how they all wound up working together, why they try not to speak to their audience's biases, the rise of the phrase "I don't agree with everything you say," reaching people outside of their silos, trying to present nuance while trying to be real at the same time, going international, and taking their responsibility to sift through the evidence and give as accurate a report as possible seriously. They also cover sticking to satire and not insult, how intolerant people are becoming of differing views, how the duopoly does not represent the younger generation of Americans who are increasingly very purple, their rule about the "both sides" argument, and trying to capture the youth before they get radicalized.

Ravi and Cory welcome new co-host, Rikki Schlott, to the show. Rikki is a contributor to Reason and the New York Post and brings a more libertarian, conservative. viewpoint to our debate. Together they reflect on the one-year anniversary of January 6 and all the alarming changes to our country since that day. President Biden is sticking with a Covid refrain: “pandemic of the unvaccinated.” Is the early data on omicron undercutting that narrative? Finally, classes are canceled in Chicago; conservatives and liberals agree we shouldn't accept full-scale school closures at this point in the pandemic. According to Pew Research Center, Generation Z is anyone born between 1997 and 2012, this makes the youngest Zoomer 9 and the oldest 24. What has Gen Z witnessed and how has this shaped their perspectives? President Ronald Reagan is often quoted, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction…” We always like to blame the most recent generation for ruining the country, and Millenials have reaped much of the blame for the state of the country today. But we often forget to look forward to how the generation after ours is struggling with similar or new issues and what potential they may have to bring us back from this brink of extinction. Join Cherise Trump and Rikki Schlott as they take a look at the political and cultural trends, as well as the potential in the next generation of leaders.
