It's the Friday news roundup! Even though it's been over 90 degrees every day this week, only a fraction of the city's water fountains are on, and we're blown away by why. One of Pittsburgh's most beloved fall attractions isn't opening this year, and we've got an update on the push to legalize recreational cannabis in Pennsylvania. We always cite our sources: Pittsburgh has over 200 water fountains, but only 35 of them are turned on because there's only one plumber who works for the city. Pittsburgh City Council passed legislation so that the city could work with the county, Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority, and school districts to hire other plumbers and pay them overtime. ScareHouse isn't opening for Halloween this year because of pandemic-related financial challenges and vacancies at Pittsburgh Mills. Residents of Second Avenue Commons who were displaced by a fire are temporarily relocating to Reedsdale Center on the North Side and other sites like Light of Life. It will be months before the Downtown shelter reopens. Two shelter residents got married at a Juneteenth celebration. Rep. Emily Kinkead, whose district encompasses some of Allegheny County, shared plans to introduce and co-sponsor a bill to legalize cannabis in Pennsylvania, but it doesn't seem like it'll get passed with this year's budget. This weekend is the groundbreaking for a memorial to the eleven worshippers killed in the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting. Instead of sticking shovels in the ground, participants will smash small glass houses. Welcome to the Juras-Sick Park-Cast podcast, the Jurassic Park podcast about Michael Crichton's 1990 novel Jurassic Park, and also not about that, too. Find the episode webpage at: Episode 31 - Stegosaur. In this episode, my terrific guest Gavin Michael Booth returns to chat with me about: Jurassic World: Dominion, making trilogies, Top Gun: Maverick, sequels, Mission Impossibles, injuring Tom Cruise, making movies, making more novels in the Jurassic Park universe, building a believable sci fi world, strange dinosaur behaviours, Corridor Crew, working with puppets, Scarehouse, Yoda, the sick Triceratops, Sam Neill anecdotes, (un)convincing accents, Artifice, Chatham-Kent International Film Festival, Forest City Film Festival, promoting movies, Ryan Powers, Toronto International Film Festival, the People's Joker, Brendan Fraser, and much more! Plus dinosaur news about: Africa's oldest dinosaurs reveal early suppression of dinosaur distribution The osteology and affinities of Eotyrannus lengi, a tyrannosauroid theropod from the Wealden Supergroup of southern England Featuring the music of Snale https://snalerock.bandcamp.com/releases Intro: Hummingbird. Outro: Sacrifice to the Inhuman Creature. The Text: This week's text is Stegosaur, spanning from pages 154 - 157. Synopsis: The tour continues to the stegosaurus paddock, where the vet is tending to a sick stego, which Grant rushes to inspect. The stegos are “always getting sick,” but Sattler cracks the case! While consuming gizzard stones, the stegos were inadvertently also consuming toxic berries – explaining why there is no trace of the west Indian lilac bushes being eaten, nor in the stego spoors. Because it's not the plants, it's the berries. They find this evidence in a discarded pile of gizzard stones … as well as something else even more shocking! Meanwhile, Gennaro quizzes Malcolm on why Chaos theory predicts that Jurassic Park is unsafe for people – or put differently, will have “very large consequences for human life.” Animal welfare and animal containment are predicted to fail at Jurassic Park – and no sooner has he said that, Grant and Ellie reveal their consequential discovery – a raptor eggshell, proving that dinosaurs are breeding in Jurassic Park. Discussions surround: Sick Stegos, Chaos Theory, Easter Eggs, and Harding is Mr. Magoo. Corrections: Side effects: May cause you to experience deliquesce diarrhea. Find it on iTunes, on Spotify (click here!) or on Podbean (click here). Thank you! The Jura-Sick Park-cast is a part of the Spring Chickens banner of amateur intellectual properties including the Spring Chickens funny pages, Tomb of the Undead graphic novel, the Second Lapse graphic novelettes, The Infantry, and the worst of it all, the King St. Capers. Today on the show we caught up with the leader of the ACT Party, David Seymour. He even managed to sneak in a few digs about Jono's (lack of) hair. We also narrowed down some of the scariest movies that we can get Ben to watch next week, in order to give away up to $10,000. If you haven't heard just yet, Ben hates scary movies. So just before Halloween, we're forcing him to sit down and watch a bunch, and every fright he gets, we take money off the $10,000 tally. Whatever is left will be given away on air the next day! If you have any other suggestions for scary movies, let us know on Instagram @thehitsbreakfast. Finally, Ben and his family have been doing something at home - to do with Squid Game... (It's not as creepy as it sounds, promise). Enjoy the pod!
Quarterly reports from Disney and Cedar continue to show good trends, but more people at fall events means more conflict. Media has been latching on to anything that can be viewed as unsafe at attractions. In this episode we touch on larger trends and discuss what some folks are doing as a defense. Plus, we finish up with some killer collaborations at ScareHouse, Hershey Park, and the first haunted house NFT.
To commemorate their 20th year, Scarehouse released a completely original collection of spine-chilling sounds and music. This music collection is part of their outreach program, but it doesn't stop there. Today we're discussing how affordable ways you can do media outreach for your haunt. You don't need a large budget, but you need a focus on building allies.John Singh, the owner of PR consultancy firm J2 Communications, works annually with Scarehouse in Pittsburgh.
