The mid-20th century was the heyday of figuring out why humans were the worst through the use of social psychological experiments. Strange Country cohosts Beth and Kelly talk about one such experiment, Muzafer Sherif's Robbers Cave Experiment where Sherif gathered a group of 12 year old boys to see if he could pit the boys against one another. Sherif's experiment is included in Psych 101 books about group dynamics, but did this hostility occur organically or was it more manufactured by the adults? While the twentieth century saw the collapse of monarchies across Europe, recent events are a reminder that hereditary monarchies still matter in Asia. In some countries like Malaysia and Bhutan the institution is thriving, but they can struggle for relevancy given the pro-democracy movement in Thailand and fast-modernising landscape of Japan. In an era of autocratic populism, does constitutional monarchy provide some safeguards against the megalomania of political leaders? Are they just feudal relics and ceremonial figureheads which should be abolished, or does the division between ceremonial and actual power act as a brake on authoritarian politicians? A virtual book launch of God Save the Queen: The strange persistence of monarchies by Dennis Altman, published by Scribe Publications. Speakers: Professor Dennis Altman (Vice-Chancellor's Fellow, La Trobe University) Professor Kaori Okano (Japanese Studies, La Trobe University) Dr Wendy Mee, (Adjunct Senior Research Fellow, Department of Social Inquiry, La Trobe University) Dr Bec Strating (Executive Director, La Trobe Asia) (Chair) Recorded 12 October, 2021.

'Conversations can be really dull compared to our inner lives, and I find that fascinating. The book was, for me, a real exploration of that difference.' Each month we celebrate an Australian debut release of fiction or non-fiction in the Kill Your Darlings First Book Club. For April that debut is A Room Called Earth by Madeleine Ryan, out now from Scribe Publications. A Room Called Earth is a brilliant debut novel from a neurodiverse author that explores a young woman's magical, sensitive, and passionate inner world. A young woman gets ready to go to a party. She arrives, feels overwhelmed, leaves, and then returns. Minutely attuned to the people who come into her view, and alternating between alienation and profound connection, she is hilarious, self-aware, sometimes acerbic, and always honest. And by the end of the night, she's shown us something radical about love, loss, and the need to belong. First Book Club host Ellen Cregan spoke with Madeleine about the book. Our theme song is Broke for Free's ‘Something Elated'. Further reading: Read Ellen Cregan's review of A Room Called Earth in our April books Roundup. Matthew Layton presents Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio's weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view. On this week's show… An inspiring story of human resilience.  Matthew's guest Marie Younan was born into a family of Assyrian refugees in north-eastern Syria. As a baby she was accidentally blinded by her grandmother - at a time and in a place where children with disabilities were not encouraged to thrive in the way we have come to expect in our society today. Her family migrated to Beirut, and then, in the mid-seventies, to Melbourne to escape the Lebanese civil war.  Because she was blind, Marie was denied a visa, and was forced to wait in Syria and Athens for three years before the family could sponsor her to come to Australia.  Unable to speak English, dependent for everything on her family, Marie, in her words, was 'only half alive'.  Then, in 1985, aged 33, she attended the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind. There she became fluent in English, literate in braille, and physically mobile with the help of a cane.  She now lives in Melbourne working as an interpreter, helping refugees and their support workers to communicate with each other and she's just about to release a book about her life. -- CALL or TEXT: 04 500 78834 EMAIL: studio1@visionaustralia.org   TWITTER: http://twitter.com/varadionetwork  and  http://twitter.com/whingeingpom  -- [PHOTO CAPTION: Black and white photo of author Marie Younan sitting at a desk with a gentleman, both of them poring over a hefty-looking braille text.] -- RESOURCES “A Different Kind of Seeing” written by Marie Younan, published by Scribe Publications - https://scribepublications.com.au/books-authors/books/a-different-kind-of-seeing Tammey Candeloro - Counselling 4 You WA https://www.counselling4youwa.com.au/ - 0423 93 15 74 -- Vision Australia gratefully acknowledges the support of the Community Broadcasting Foundation for Studio 1.

Take Home Reading is a new short-form audio series for readers and writers – shining a spotlight on Australian writers with recently released books. In each instalment, you'll be introduced to a writer, learn a little about what they've been reading lately, and hear a short reading from their latest work. In this episode we're talking to Laura Jean McKay about her novel The Animals in That Country, a bold, exhilarating and original novel that asks what would happen, for better or worse, if we finally understood what animals were saying. ‘And of course, the animals don't say the things that humans wish that they were saying. They're not saying "I ruff you!" or anything like that. They're quite brutal, their relationship with humans is really fraught, because that's the way that human relationships are with animals. Luke Horton’s ‘The Fogging’ follows a young academic couple who are caught in a spraying of pesticides known as “the fogging” during a trip to Bali, their first holiday in years. In the time that follows, their relationship slowly begins to disintegrate. Luke recently joined us to discuss his debut novel, the challenges of launching a book during lockdown and writing anxiety with Ellen Cregan for the Kill Your Darlings First Book Club. It made for a fascinating discussion and we hope you enjoy this recording. Kill Your Darlings is an online journal championing great Australian writing from emerging and established authors. You can find their work at https://www.killyourdarlings.com.au/ Luke Horton’s ‘The Fogging’ is out now from Scribe Publications. "We're living in increasingly anxious times…I think it's bubbling away in the backdrop of every contemporary novel in some way." Each month we celebrate an Australian debut release of fiction or non-fiction with the Kill Your Darlings First Book Club. For August that debut is Luke Horton's The Fogging, out now from Scribe Publications. The Fogging was highly commended for the Victorian Premier's Award for an Unpublished Manuscript in 2019, and is a compelling tale of the slow disintegration of a relationship and the unravelling of a man. For this show, we go on two different journeys across Asia with two restless women bitten by the travel bug. Kim Barker did 'The Taliban Shuffle' as Afghanistan and Pakistan correspondent for the Chicago Tribune for eight years from 2001. She lived a high-pressure life chasing suicide bombings and rigged elections. She spoke to Neda Vanovac about bluffing her way through and never losing her fear. Steph Liong brings us the story of Australian writer Carolyn Shine, who thought moving continents would be easier than moving suburbs, and went from Bondi to Vietnam. We also take another peek into the world of the Rereaders, who are talking about the exclusion of indigenous poets in Australian anthologies. Carolyn Shine, Single White Female in Hanoi, published by Transit Lounge Publishing, prduced by Stephanie Liong.
