Barstool Sports' T-Bob Hebert joins The Next Round for a wide-ranging conversation on two of the biggest storylines in the SEC: Is Alabama Football starting to decline, and what does Lane Kiffin have to accomplish in Year 1 at LSU for the season to be considered a success? T-Bob breaks down the state of the Alabama Crimson Tide, whether the program is still operating at a championship level, and how expectations in Tuscaloosa have changed in the post-Nick Saban era. Then the conversation turns to LSU Football and Lane Kiffin. With enormous expectations surrounding Kiffin's first season in Baton Rouge, what is the realistic standard for success? Does LSU need to make the College Football Playoff immediately? Is competing for an SEC Championship the expectation? And how much pressure is there on Kiffin to prove that LSU can once again become one of college football's elite programs? We also dive into the Jayden Daniels No. 5 jersey controversy at LSU and the drama surrounding one of the most recognizable numbers in recent Tigers history. What does the situation say about LSU, its former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, and the way Lane Kiffin is handling his new program? Can Josh Heupel Finally Avoid the "Heupel Loss" in 2026?

Tennessee football is entering the 2026 season with enormous expectations, but is this finally the year the Volunteers take the next step under Josh Heupel? On this episode of the A to Z Sports Big Orange Podcast, Charlie Burris and Zach Ragan ask three huge questions about Tennessee football heading into the season. Is this the year Josh Heupel makes the correct quarterback decision the first time? Is this the year new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles gets his defense playing at a high level immediately? And perhaps most importantly, is this the year Tennessee finally avoids the dreaded "Heupel loss" against a team the Vols should beat? The conversation begins with the latest Tennessee fall camp news. Ty Redmond returned to practice after missing time with an illness, although he was working on the side, while Ethan Davis remained out with an undisclosed injury. The guys also discuss comments from Tennessee offensive line coach Glen Elarbee, who was remarkably candid about the performance of his offensive line during the 2025 season. Elarbee acknowledged that his group struggled when it mattered most, creating significant expectations for a talented 2026 offensive line featuring players such as David Sanders. Charlie and Zach then turn their attention to Tennessee's biggest offseason question: the quarterback competition between Faizon Brandon and George MacIntyre. Is this finally the year Josh Heupel gets his quarterback decision right on the first attempt? The hosts revisit Heupel's decision to start Joe Milton over Hendon Hooker in 2021 and discuss why the quarterback position can be so difficult to evaluate before the lights come on. With Tennessee's first scrimmage approaching, the quarterback battle is entering an important stage, and the second scrimmage could help determine when the Vols ultimately settle on a starter. The podcast also examines Jim Knowles' first season as Tennessee's defensive coordinator. Knowles has said his defense is progressing faster than it did at previous stops because he was able to bring coaches and players familiar with his system to Knoxville. Charlie and Zach discuss whether that continuity, combined with Tennessee's work under new strength and conditioning coach Derek Owings, could allow the Vols defense to make a dramatic improvement from last season. Finally, the guys tackle one of the most important questions for Tennessee's 2026 season: Can Josh Heupel avoid another "Heupel loss"? The hosts identify several games where Tennessee could potentially stumble, including Georgia Tech, Auburn, Arkansas, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. With a young quarterback potentially making his first SEC road starts, Tennessee could be more vulnerable to an upset than in previous seasons. The discussion also explores the increasing parity in college football. With NIL, the transfer portal and roster movement creating more competitive balance across the SEC, Charlie and Zach argue that there are fewer truly "unbeatable" games than ever before. Even highly talented teams can lose to unexpected opponents, making Tennessee's ability to avoid bad losses especially important if the Vols want to compete for the SEC Championship and College Football Playoff. With the first Tennessee football scrimmage coming up Saturday, the answers to these questions are about to become much clearer. Is this finally the year for Tennessee? Watch the latest Big Orange Podcast featuring Charlie Burris and Zach Ragan for the latest Tennessee Volunteers football news, fall camp analysis, quarterback battle updates, Jim Knowles' defense, Josh Heupel analysis, SEC football discussion and everything surrounding the Vols heading into the 2026 season. Can Alabama football overcome one of the youngest offenses in the country and compete for the 2026 SEC Championship? On this episode of Last Call, former Alabama national championship quarterback Jake Coker joins Mick Gillispie at The Next Round studios to break down the biggest storylines surrounding the 2026 SEC football season. The guys examine BetMGM's SEC Championship odds, with Texas and Georgia listed as the favorites ahead of LSU, Alabama, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Oklahoma and Tennessee. Is Alabama being overlooked at +850, or are the Crimson Tide's 8.5-win projection and inexperienced offense legitimate reasons for concern? Jake and Mick also evaluate Alabama's quarterback competition between Austin Mack and Keelon Russell. Mack has valuable experience in Kalen DeBoer's system, but Russell possesses the explosive talent and playmaking ability that could completely change the Crimson Tide offense. Who should be Alabama's QB1, and could Russell become a legitimate Heisman Trophy contender? The conversation also covers:

Coach and Jimmy discuss recent developments from the SEC spring meetings, followed by a comprehensive review of the current state and history of University of Tennessee (UT) athletics. Key Topics Discussed SEC Spring Meetings & Self-Governance: The hosts analyze SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey's position on playoff expansion and conference schedules, noting his desire to preserve the SEC Championship game. They also discuss the growing potential for the SEC and Big Ten to self-govern, which includes complex debates over standardizing revenue-sharing caps for college athletes. Tennessee Softball's College World Series Run: The team is highly praised for their 2-0 start at the Women's College World Series (their first winner's bracket appearance since 2013). The hosts highlight a game-winning home run by Emma Clark, the depth of their nation-leading pitching staff, and the strong leadership of head coach Karen Weekly. Tennessee Baseball's Early Exit: The hosts express disappointment over the baseball team's inconsistent season. They note bullpen struggles and poor clutch hitting (1-for-17 with runners in scoring position) that led to an unprecedented 0-2 elimination in the regionals. Tennessee Basketball's Offensive Shift: The discussion highlights head coach Rick Barnes' evolving strategy. He is actively using the transfer portal to recruit stronger offensive scorers, signaling a slight shift from his traditionally defense-heavy approach. Tennessee Football History & Roster Updates: Doug shares anecdotes from UT football history, including the artificial turf turning black during a 1969 game, the 1980 Herschel Walker game, and Chuck Webb's dominant 250-yard rushing performance in the 1990 Cotton Bowl. The hosts also address the current football roster, expressing mild concerns about depth at the edge rusher position following several transfer portal departures. Tennessee Golf: A brief update is provided on the men's golf team competing in the NCAA championships and a standout individual performance by Kiara van Kan for the women's team. Praise for UT Administration: The segment concludes with strong praise for the current university leadership—Chancellor Donde Plowman, President Randy Boyd, and Athletic Director Danny White. The hosts contrast the current era of administrative stability and athletic success with the university's struggles between 1999 and 2018. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Coach takes a nostalgic look back at the 32-year coaching legacy of John Majors and Phillip Fulmer at the University of Tennessee, highlights their collective 268 victories, and reflects on a golden 14-season stretch from 1985 to 1998 that brought five SEC Championships and one National Championship to the Volunteers. The speaker, who coached for a decade with each man and even shared an office with Fulmer for nine of those years, provides a rare, firsthand perspective on their careers. Both coaches were Middle Tennessee natives, Tennessee alumni, elite former players, and College Football Hall of Fame inductees whose tenures ultimately ended with their dismissals, a testament to the high-stakes nature of the position. The segment moves on to dispel prominent myths, with the speaker explicitly denying allegations about Majors' drinking habits during the season and refuting the narrative that Fulmer backstabbed Majors to take his job, noting the decision was made by University President Joe Johnson. The speaker compares their contrasting coaching styles, highlighting how Majors frequently shook up his defensive staff and was a powerful "closer" in home recruiting visits, whereas Fulmer maintained staff stability and acted as a relentless, day-to-day lead recruiter who deeply knew his prospects. Finally, the segment revisits the pivotal 1992 season, suggesting that the tragic passing of trusted trainer Tim Karen left Majors without the one confidant who could have successfully persuaded him to delay his return from heart surgery, an aggressive return that ultimately triggered the coaching transition.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
