It has been called "the world's oldest profession," but it's not one that's often discussed openly. Of course, we're talking about sex work. Attitudes about certain parts of the industry—from porn to strip clubs—have evolved over time, and so has the language used to discuss it. Even the term "sex work" is relatively new. This week, reporter Steven Rascón brings us the story of the woman who coined the term, and the history of the sex worker rights movement. This episode contains frank discussions about sexual acts, and sex work—some of which is criminalized in California. And it includes some outdated language. “Sex Worker Rights are Human Rights “We have chosen to advocate for the decriminalization of all aspects of consensual adult sex - sex work that does not involve coercion, exploitation or abuse. This is based on evidence and the real-life experience of sex workers themselves that criminalization makes them less safe.” – Amnesty International Sex Worker Rights Defined Sex workers are entitled to live free of discrimination, stigma, and violence. As all people, their rights to life, health, privacy, and bodily autonomy should not be infringed upon. Sex worker rights have generally focused on decriminalizing sex work as a tool to ensure fair treatment. Human Rights Framework Human rights are inalienable rights, which all people are entitled to by virtue of their status as human beings. Various international human rights principles and legal instruments have been generated through the United Nations in order to put forth state obligations to protect and honor those rights. Although the United States has not signed and ratified most of the international human rights treaties, advocates have called for the application of a human rights framework domestically. Importance Folks engaged in the sex trade are faced with pervasive violence, stigma, and discrimination, which consequently limit the ways in which many sex workers navigate the world. Recognizing the rights of sex workers as human rights not only affirms the dignity and humanity of sex workers as indeed, workers but also recognizes them as human beings and rights holders beyond the context of their work. Folks in the sex trade have needs and desires outside of their occupation that we must also center and support. The systemic oppression many sex workers encounter, and very often without legal recourse, is compounded for racial and sexual minorities, folks with histories of drug use and criminal system involvement, persons living with HIV, people from immigrant backgrounds, etc. Criminalization exacerbates marginalization and work- related safety and health hazards. Creating pathways for folks in the sex trade to assert their rights through the decriminalization of sex work can improve life outcomes and center their voices. Applying the Framework A rights based approach is an evidence-based approach. Research has shown that supporting sex worker rights is the best way to promote safety and health and shift law enforcement resources towards violent crime. HIPS recognizes the agency and individual power of the populations we serve. To provide compassionate harm reduction services and advocacy, we aspire to be non-judgmental and non-coercive. We recognize that there are a variety of reasons why folks engage in the sex trade. We also recognize the harms associated with sex work due to its criminalization—laws have the power to constrain a person's ability to survive and thrive safely. Advancing the human rights of our clients requires us to challenge laws that criminalize their livelihoods while simultaneously challenging the lack of resources made available to sex workers and advocates. Review our Sex Work Policies document for more information about local laws and policies in the District of Columbia we can change to better support folks in the sex trade. In July 2015, Amnesty International announced, that following two years of research and consultations, it would be voting to develop a policy respecting the human rights of sex workers by advocating for the decriminalization of sex work globally. HIPS stands in solidarity with the push for decriminalization, in recognition of the rights of sex workers and the role of decriminalization in securing those rights. HIPS is a harm reduction service provider and advocacy organization providing support to persons impacted by sexual exchange and/or drug use in the District of Columbia. I was really stoked when Sinn Sage of Sage Advice Podcast messaged me that she'd like to come onto the podcast. Sinn is a veteran of our industry, a podcaster like myself, an intellectual, an advocate. She does so much in and for the industry that I was honoured that she wanted to speak her truth on the podcast. We speak about the intersectionality of queer rights and SWer rights and how closely related they have been. The crusade against queer and trans folks is eerily similar to the witch-hunt that is also happening to SWers. We look back on history and compare to what's happening in this current day and age. It's time to throw out your old hygiene habits and upgrade your life! #ad #manscapedpodIn this week's episode we are joined by lovely guest Chanelle Gallant, who has been a sex worker rights activist for 20 years. We begin the episode by hearing how Chanelle got into sex work activism, and why sex work activism is so important, not just for sex workers but for wider society too (hint— sex workers rights are basic human rights!)We get deep into why sex work organising is so important, and how it is a truly feminist space that is more intersectional than any other. Chanelle tells us of the optimism she has for grassroots organising, and how everyone can get involved in sex work activism. We then move on to what sex work means to sex workers, and how the money it provides them with often gets them out of situations that the government wouldn't. Chanelle explains how the very criminalisation of sex work creates unnecessary stigma around sex acts that doesn't exist when it's unpaid, and how that stigma is fed by larger systems of oppression at work. Chanelle tells us how sex is often a form of unpaid work that people perform as a service to men, and we theorise what sex worker rights would look like if rich white men were doing it.We then get into the policing of sex workers, from the physical use of police forces during ‘anti-trafficking raids' to the more subtle ways state power restricts sex workers' rights. We touch briefly on OnlyFans, and how the activism and organisation surrounding the platform was largely focused on white and cisgender sex workers, and Chanelle explains how the same level of organisation can, and should, be easily applied to all sex workers, regardless of gender, race, and citizen status. We end the episode by discussing whether sex itself can be liberating, and whether our sexuality defines us (essentially— can we fuck ourselves to freedom?).We really hope you enjoy this episode, we've been really looking forward to you guys being able to hear it and to meeting Chanelle! The tragic deaths of six Asian women in Atlanta have highlighted the intersectional reasons why they were targeted and killed. Perceived as foreigner persons, migrants engaging in immoral and illegal work, fetishized women, and those contributing to the spread of the coronavirus, Butterfly advocates for the full decriminalization of sex work, for full status for migrant sex workers, for immigration laws to allow sex work to be recognized as work, and for no cops at workplaces, among other calls to action. Listen to Elene explain why her organization is part of an alliance of 25 sex worker organizations bringing a Charter challenge to the criminal laws affecting sex work, among other legal reforms.

In this episode I Break Bread with Molly Smith and Juno Mac. Juno and Molly are sex workers and activists who campaign for the safety and labour rights of sex workers. They are the authors of Revolting Prostitutes: The Fight for Sex Workers Rights.I was keen to speak to Molly and Juno because I think, maybe now more than ever, there is a need to have thoughtful conversations about difficult or contentious issues, that aren’t just about soundbites and picking sides. We need to be able to understand the nuance and complexities of people’s arguments if we are going to engage with them honestly. They are not advocating that sex work is great work and should be included on the national curriculum. What they are saying is that it exists, and that it is inherently dangerous work that it is made more dangerous by the legal system that surrounds it. They are asking that people – society and the government – recognise their basic human right to safety whilst at the same time we work towards a society where prostitution isn’t necessary as a means of survival for the most vulnerable people at the very fringes of society. I think it is an important discussion and I am grateful that they made the time to talk to me. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Founded in 1989 by a grassroots collective of Black women in response to the spread of HIV/AIDS in New Orleans, Louisiana, Women With A Vision is a social justice non-profit which focuses on the most urgent issues faced by women, especially women of color vulnerable to criminal justice involvement. Originally focusing on health promotion and community outreach, Women With a Vision over the years has expanded its activities to include policy-level initiatives to address various forms of structural violence that negatively affect women and communities of color within Louisiana and elsewhere. Today their major areas of focus include Sex Worker Rights, Drug Policy Reform, HIV Positive Women’s Advocacy, and Reproductive Justice outreach. Their mission statement says "We envision an environment in which there is no war against women’s bodies, in which women have spaces to come together and share their stories, in which women are empowered to make decisions concerning their own bodies and lives, and in which women have the necessary support to realize their hopes, dreams, and full potential."
