Police officers who 'brought shame on their uniforms' and let Emma Caldwell's killer Iain Packer walk free for 19 years should be jailed if it is found they 'engaged in criminality', her family's lawyer says.  Packer, 51, was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 36 years at the High Court in Glasgow this month after being found guilty of murdering the 27-year-old in 2005, as well as 11 rapes and 21 other charges, including sexual assaults, against other women. Yet 'one of the UK's worst sex offenders' was left to roam the streets for nearly two decades despite officers being repeatedly told Packer 'is the man' and the warped killed taking officers in 2007 to the spot where Emma's body was dumped.

On this special episode, host and human rights activist Lakeesha Harris gathers a legendary roundtable of leaders in the Black Sex Worker movement: performer/activists Sinnamon Love and Jet Setting Jasmine of the BIPOC Adult Industry Collective, and historian/professor Dr Charlene Fletcher. Together, they discuss the legacy of sex workers in fine art museums, Black women who are silenced in the archives, pleasure influence, mental health care, colorism at the strip club, and more! And Lakeesha gives a raw and righteous farewell to Old Pro News, asserting that no conversation surrounding workers rights and labor organizing is complete without sex workers at the table.    Sinnamon Love is a visual artist, published writer, community organizer, and Black Feminist Pornographer. Francine Tremblay's book Organizing for Sex Workers’ Rights in Montréal: Resistance and Advocacy (Lexington Books, 2020) is based on a case study about Stella, l’amie de Maimie a Montréal sex workers' rights organization, founded by and for sex workers. It explores how a group of ostracized female-identified sex workers transformed themselves into a collective to promote the health and well-being of women working in the sex industry. Weighed down by the old and tenacious whore symbol, the sex workers at Stella had to find a way to navigate the criminality of sex work and sex workers, in order to do advocacy and support work, and create safer spaces for sex workers to engage in such advocacy. This book focuses on sex workers, but the advocacy challenges and strategies it outlines can also apply to the lives of other marginalized groups who are often ignored, pitied, or reviled, but who are seldom seen as fully human.  Listeners may also be interested in this article by Tromblay and a report for The Doctors of The World. In 2019, over 10,000 possible victims of slavery were found in the UK. From men working in Sports Direct warehouses for barely any pay, to teenaged Vietnamese girls trafficked into small town nail bars, we're told that modern slavery is all around us, operating in plain sight. But is this really slavery, and is it even a new phenomenon? Why has the British Conservative Party called it 'one of the great human rights issues of our time', when they usually ignore the exploitation of those at the bottom of the economic pile? In January 2021, Pluto published a new book by writer and activist, Emily Kenway, called The Truth About Modern Slavery, in which she reveals how modern slavery has been created as a political tool by those in power. We are joined on the podcast this month by Emily Kenway; Ella Cockbain, Associate Professor in Security and Crime Science at University College London, and author of Offender and Victim Networks in Human Trafficking; and Molly Smith, co-author with Juno Mac of Revolting Prostitutes: The Fight for Sex Workers’ Rights. Gemma is a full service sex worker (which she says many know better as "escort" or "prostitute") and Marxist sex worker organizer. Dr. Heather Berg is a feminist scholar who teaches Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. In this episode we talk about struggles facing sex workers seeking mental health services; whether sex work should be considered an especially exploitative form of wage labor under capitalism or just another form of wage labor; the political weaponization of sex trafficking laws and survivor narratives used against sex workers; why some men feel more comfortable hiring sex workers "for therapy" than actually seeing a therapist...and a lot more! Geek Girl in the News looks at the awesome or not so awesome news that will make you go either: "YAY" or "OMG I can't believe that." The latest and greatest geek girl news from April 2020 covers the latest film release to get delayed, Ezra Miller literally choking out a fan, our newest celeb to stan, Olivia Munn, Land O' Lakes changing their problematic logo (yay!), beloved author Jacqueline Wilson coming out, Cyberpunk 2077 is the game we love to love for yet ANOTHER reason, and, of course, it wouldn't be a Geek Girl in the News without some adorable Animal Crossing news. As sad as it is, Sony have released some expected news that Spider-Man is going to be delayed. We mean, it makes SENSE, because filming schedules are all up the left, eh!? So this is not completely unexpected news and honestly we're waiting to hear what else is getting that push back. And as if we needed another reason not to go see the next Fantastic Beasts, video footage has been released (and since release taken away) of Ezra Miller choking out a fan in Iceland. Totally unprecedented and really unprovoked attack that had to have the club bouncers literally pull them off a female fan. Um, yeah, this is NOT okay. Totally fucked up. We're disappointed in this act. But you know who we do 100% STAN!? Olivia Munn! She's Hearthstone's latest lover who's on a quest to Legend (and reached it!). We might not 100% know who she is all the time, but honestly now we're on a mission to binge everything Munn. We're also loving Land O' Lakes new logo. Removing the cultural appropriation is a move we can absolutely get behind. We only wish they'd used this as a learning opportunity around WHY it's such a problem to use Native American imagery to sell your not native products. Of course, the MAGA-loving crowd aren't behind the move and are boycotting the company. Boo-hoo, see ya later. Then we're headed to British territory where we talk about the beloved author, Jaqueline Wilson, known for the Tracy Beaker series of books has publically come out. While she never considered herself "in the closet," when celebs take a more vocal stand for LGBTQ+ issues, it helps normalise and grows acceptance. We're also super excited for her new book, Love Frankie, due out in bookstores this August! Will you be getting it!?? Okay, honestly, is Cyberpunk 2077 and CD Projekt Red the best game and developer out there right now? We literally cannot with how much we're loving how much wokeness is going into this game. The latest news? A gang led by a woman who pays her sex workers a legit wage and stands up for their protection. SEX WORKERS RIGHTS MATTER!!! Last, but definitely not least, we're getting all sorts of excited over Elijah Freaking Wood visiting someone's island in Animal Crossing to sell some turnips. So wholesome. So good. We love this!! In a clip of a NewsmaxTV broadcast uploaded to YouTube yesterday, O'Reilly said that Biden posed “the stiffest challenge” to President Trump in the road ahead to the 2020 election because Biden has the most name recognition among the general public compared to other Democrats eyeing the party nomination. Biden has not formally announced a 2020 bid, but The Wall Street Journal reports that Biden has been lining up major donors so that he can quickly raise millions of dollars for an impending campaign. In the last week, two women have alleged that Biden touched them inappropriately. On Tuesday, The New York Times reported that two more women made additional allegations of inappropriate behavior toward them by Biden. Criticisms of Biden's behavior toward women and the nickname “Creepy Uncle Joe” have circulated for years, but the recently reported allegations have inspired many on the progressive left to criticize and question the former vice president. To critics voicing concerns, Biden's behavior demonstrates a fundamental disconnect between the potential candidate and modern conversations about how men in power should behave toward women.

I support efforts to decriminalize prostitution, but I do not support any idea, bill, or proposal that would let pimps, johns, and the exploiters off the hook.” Yet many sex workers and advocates argue that the Nordic model makes their work more dangerous by pushing them further underground, and that criminalizing the purchase of sex has ripple effects that make their work more ripe for violence and exploitation. As Decrim NY wrote in a statement after Monday's rally: “The Nordic Model is criminalization, and it puts people who trade sex at increased risk of violence, economic instability, and labor exploitation.” The coalition also noted that Ramos's and Salazar's planned legislation would “explicitly build in protections for people trading sex, especially trafficking survivors, so they have recourse against violence and exploitation.”

Hey Gang.  patreon.com/winecellarmediafund paypal.me/PhoenixAndWilliam It's sadly not an uncommon story. Decades of stigma have made it nearly impossible for sex workers to report such crimes to the police without risk of persecution. Current laws are designed to make it ridiculously easy to arrest and charge them — even having condoms on one's person can be used as evidence that someone is engaging in sex work. Because of this, the majority of violence inflicted upon sex workers goes unreported, over the victim's not-unjustified fears that they will just be arrested and charged while their assailants walk free.

In this episode I Break Bread with Molly Smith and Juno Mac. Juno and Molly are sex workers and activists who campaign for the safety and labour rights of sex workers. They are the authors of Revolting Prostitutes: The Fight for Sex Workers Rights.I was keen to speak to Molly and Juno because I think, maybe now more than ever, there is a need to have thoughtful conversations about difficult or contentious issues, that aren’t just about soundbites and picking sides. We need to be able to understand the nuance and complexities of people’s arguments if we are going to engage with them honestly. They are not advocating that sex work is great work and should be included on the national curriculum. What they are saying is that it exists, and that it is inherently dangerous work that it is made more dangerous by the legal system that surrounds it. They are asking that people – society and the government – recognise their basic human right to safety whilst at the same time we work towards a society where prostitution isn’t necessary as a means of survival for the most vulnerable people at the very fringes of society. I think it is an important discussion and I am grateful that they made the time to talk to me. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Juno Mac and Molly Smith in conversation with Frankie Mullin about how the law harms sex workers—and what they want instead Do you have to think that prostitution is good to support sex worker rights? How do sex worker rights fit with feminist and anti-capitalist politics? Is criminalising clients progressive—and can the police deliver justice? In Revolting Prostitutes, sex workers Juno Mac and Molly Smith bring a fresh perspective to questions that have long been contentious. Speaking from a growing global sex worker rights movement, and situating their argument firmly within wider questions of migration, work, feminism, and resistance to white supremacy, they make clear that anyone committed to working towards justice and freedom should be in support of the sex worker rights movement.
