“Why aren't we doing good, healthy food from the get-go?” says Dr. Sheila Kilbane, pediatrician and author of Healthy Kids, Happy Moms: 7 Steps to Heal and Prevent Common Childhood Illnesses. In today's episode of The Momologist™, Dr. Kilbane discusses the key contributors behind many common childhood illnesses and an alternative approach to treating children's health. As a pediatrician, Dr. Kilbane was constantly being presented with repeat clients, who were stuck in a vicious cycle of recurring illnesses such as eczema, sinus infections, ear infections, abdominal pain, and constipation. While the typical treatments for these illnesses (namely antibiotics or steroids) may help temporarily improve one's symptoms, they fail to address any underlying health issues at play. Faced with this problem on a daily basis, Dr. Kilbane decided there had to be a better way, which is what motivated her groundbreaking research on system-wide inflammation. By simply changing what their children eat, parents can heal some of the underlying inflammation that causes many common childhood illnesses. Tune into this week's episode of The Momologist™ for a conversation about the main causes of inflammation and how inflammation in one area of the body can trigger wide-ranging symptoms. If you have a child that frequently gets sick or you're simply looking for ways to eat cleaner and stay healthier overall, don't miss out on this episode! Quotes • “We don't have to wait until the child has 5 or 6 different diagnoses. We can start to do this when we see one thing…Why aren't we just feeding everybody like this? Why aren't we doing good healthy food from the get go?” (12:28-12:46) • “When the cup of inflammation is overflowing, that's when we're having these symptoms. The inflammation can be anywhere in the body. Our body is sending white blood cells to that area in order to work on whatever it's perceiving it needs to address. If you think about our body like a cup and the water in the cup is the inflammation, when the cup is overflowing that's where we have the symptoms.” (19:14-19:28) • “We don't have fences in the body, so inflammation in one area is inflammation in other areas.” (22:53-22:60) • “We've got 5 main triggers of inflammation…It's the way that our genetics interact with these five triggers. The triggers are: food, environmental allergies, environmental toxins, infectious diseases, and stress.” (28:32-28:54) • “Hey, you can do this. Let's start off small, let's do things a little bit at a time and then we can start to talk about our cleaning products, our beauty products, what are we eating and drinking out of. Can we start to get rid of the plastics? We know that BPA is an endocrine disrupter… That's one of the big factors that is contributing to what's going on now and then I think the other factor is the herbicides, the pesticides that we're spraying on our food.”(45:15-45:56) • “Take it one step at a time. If the first thing you can do is start to decrease sugar, that is huge. Sugar and dairy, I find, are the two big culprits.” (1:10:53-1:11:09) Stats Mentioned • “50% of American children suffer from chronic illnesses.” (7:45-7:50) • “The gut is the hub for about 70% of our immune system.” (21:38-21:40) • “The stats on food allergies are staggering. The numbers have gone up so significantly in the last 30-40 years…In the mid 90's there was a study done by the Environmental Working Group… It's called the Ten Human Study… They took 10 babies and they drew cord blood… They had 400 different chemicals that they were looking for and what they found in every single one of them was over 200 different chemicals in each of these babies… Some of what they found were pesticides, herbicides – things that had been banned 30 years prior to when the study was done.” (40:59-42:51) • “We breathe in about 10,000 liters of air a day. We drink anywhere from a liter to 2 to 3 liters of water a day.” (44:00-44:06) • “The four main things that we need for healthy bones in kids: 1. Exercise, physical weight-bearing activity, 2. maintain adequate levels of Vitamin D, 3. an adequate amount of Calcium, 4. Magnesium and other minerals, 5. Vitamin K. “ (50:28-51:34) • “The amount of calcium recommended in the US that children need is almost twice as much as what the World Health Organization recommends.” (52:28-52:37) Notable Links Website: https://sheilakilbane.com/ Healthy Kids Happy Moms Book: https://sheilakilbane.com/book/ Dr. Kilbane's Supplement Guide: https://sheilakilbane.com/supplementguide Dr. Kilbane's Eczema Guide: https://sheilakilbane.com/eczemaguide Join the waitlist for Dr. Kilbane's Companion Course Connect with Dr. Sheila Kilbane: Instagram: @sheilakilbanemd Facebook: Sheila Kilbane, MD Subscribe to our Mailing List: www.TheOfficialMomologist.com Connect with The Momologist™: https://www.instagram.com/theofficialmomologist/ https://www.facebook.com/TheOfficialMomologist ------ The Momologist™ is a production of The Reel Media Group. Clean eating has been trendy for years, but it hasn't been without controversy from those who say it can lead to eating disorders. There's also no standard definition for the term nor is it regulated, so there's been a lot of confusion about what it actually means. In this episode, I sat down with Michelle Dudash, an award-winning registered dietitian nutritionist, Cordon Bleu-certified chef, founder of Dash Dinners Spice Kits, and a television personality. She is also the author of the top-selling cookbook Clean Eating for Busy Families as well as Clean Eating Kitchen: The Low-Carb Mediterranean Cookbook. We talked about the benefits of clean eating for kids and how to move from processed foods to real food, but still make room for your kids' favorite snacks. We also covered how to save money, save time, and get healthy meals on the table everyday, and Michelle talked about her favorite clean-eating recipes for kids. Welcome 3:17 Let's talk about your story! 4:34 What is “clean eating?” 5:33 What does research show us about the benefits of clean eating? 7:25 Why is clean eating vital for kids? 9:40 What myths are there about clean eating? 13:24 What foods should parents focus on? 16:05 What are the best chicken and beef options? 18:11 What are the best drinks for kids? 20:23 What are some foods kids should avoid and is some processing ok? 21: 59 Does clean eating mean avoiding gluten and dairy? 23:47 What are easy tips for families to get more whole foods in their diets and follow a clean-eating approach? 27:03 If your kid has been eating a lot of processed foods and is a picky eater, how can you encourage healthier eating habits? 28:29 As kids get older, there are more opportunities for them to eat processed foods. How can parents encourage healthy eating habits without being too restrictive? 3:04 Can a hyper-focus on clean eating lead to disordered eating? 33:28 How can families follow a clean eating plan on a budget? 35:14 What are your best tips for busy families to get healthy “clean" meals and snacks on the table? 37:50 What are your favorite recipes from your book? Learn more about Sheila here. Surge of Chronic Illness in Children A few decades ago, approximately 1 in 7 children had a chronic health issue, today 1 in 2 children The food supply has drastically evolved Chemicals, herbicides, pesticides are all more commonly used in comparison to the past Roundup Roundup was originally patented as an antibiotic It is commonly used as a chemical sprayed on crops to help with a quick turnover in crop production It becomes absorbed by the part of the plants that we consume Consuming non-organic wheat, corn, and soy exposes children to an excess of chemicals and pesticides that can alter the good bacteria in their gut The personal care products we use on our bodies and cleaning products we use daily in our homes also play a role The Difference Between Conventional Medicine vs. Functional Medicine in Pediatrics Example: Looking at a case of eczema Conventional Medicine Trained to find a steroid treatment to apply to the skin in order to resolve the issue Functional/Integrative Medicine Trained to take steps that look at all factors to find the root cause of the reaction Address the 5 triggers of inflammation: food, environmental allergies, environmental toxins, stress, and infections. By addressing inflammation in the body, you will also be addressing inflammation in the brain Decreasing the source of inflammation allows the body to return to working naturally 7 Steps to Confronting Chronic Illness Assessment - find a practitioner assessing the child's medical history from an integrative standpoint Understanding that inflammation is illness Addressing the 5 triggers of Inflammation: Food, Environmental allergies, Environmental toxins, Stress, Infections Gut Health Food - Start with tackling breakfast (see below) Supplements Roadmap Change Up the Food Routine - Tackle Breakfast First Remove cereal and milk - this immediately eliminates a lot of sugar Try eggs, organic bacon or sausage, a burger, a piece of salmon, leftover chicken Try a healthy fat or protein and something colorful A green smoothie is a great way to integrate color Integrating more organic whole foods automatically shifts away from sugar intake The Environmental Working Group: The Clean 15 & The Dirty Dozen The Environmental Working Group has guidelines to help you shop for produce and reduce your chemical and pesticide intake The Clean 15 The Dirty Dozen You can download their app ‘EWG's Healthy Living' You can decrease your pesticide exposure by up to 92% by following their guidelines Children with higher percentages of pesticide exposure have higher rates of ADHD The EWG also has resources to point parents in the right direction for reducing toxicity levels in their personal care products Where to learn more about Sheila Kilbane sheilakilbane.com Twitter: @SheilaKilbaneMD Instagram: @sheilakilbanemd Facebook Sheila's Book on Amazon Connect with Dr. Nicole Beurkens on... Doc Smo here, your pedcast host . I hope you are having a good day today. It's my pleasure to have, once again, Dr Sheila Kilbane, one of the few, and definitely one of the best “Integrative Pediatricians” in the US. She is trained in both traditional western medicine as well as in the art of integrative medicine. She brings a unique perspective to our “topic of this week“, which is the medical power of honey…, no not your husband or wife, but the gooey sticky stuff from the hives. I think we are going to find out there are good reasons why those bees protect it with such vigor! Honey does already play an important role in health care for children. -I have read and I frequently recommend honey as a good cough suppressant. -Parents tell me all the time stories of how local honey helps their children's allergies. -A mom told me the other day about how good honey works for gastrointestinal upsets. I think this Is really true because it is part of some home recipes for pedialyte that I have read about for children older than 1 year. - I have also heard of how effective honey can be in aiding wound healing and possibly in the treatment of other diseases. For more on that subject, we have my good friend, Dr. Sheila Kilbane, a bona fide nutrition expert as well as pediatrician, to give us more information about medical uses of honey. -Hello chatter- PS and SK… -It's delicious, I love it on my apples and in my tea… but honey for medical uses??? -Q1 Dr. Kilbane, what is so special about honey. Why not maple syrup or molasses? Are there special properties that honey has that other gooey sugary substance don't have? SK answers -Q2 I've heard that honey can help heal wounds Is this true? SK answers -Q3 Any other uses for honey in the world of medical care? SK answers Summary: If you missed the past Pedcasts with Dr Kilbane, make sure you check them out. They are great! We made pedcasts about ADD, Winterizing your children, organic foods, probiotics, and now the medicinal properties of honey. Dr. Kilbane, as always, Its is wonderful to talk with you Dr. Kilbane and you ALWAYS expand my knowledge and curiosity about pediatrics. Thank you, thank, thank you. Please come back soon, won't you This is Dr. Paul Smolen, Doc Smo, hoping you recognize the big deal that honey can play if your child needs to heal. Until next time.
Today I am here with Yarone Goren who is helping pioneer the future of healthcare. If he has his way, the days of waiting in the doctor’s office (and waiting… and waiting…) should soon be over. Yarone cofounded SteadyMD to give people an on-demand and personalized healthcare option for quality primary care completely online. With SteadyMD a doctor is only a text away, and not just any doctor but one who knows you and your case. My New Doctor: SteadyMD If you know my story, you know I searched for a long time to get the right help for my autoimmune condition. It took me literally years and almost a dozen doctors to finally find answers, and this was after I was doing a ton of research. SteadyMD takes a different approach: matching a patient to just the right doctor, and making sure the doctor’s patient load is low enough that they can take their patients’ calls anytime, anywhere… and actually know them by name! I’ve been so impressed with this service I am not only a patient but also an advisor. I love that SteadyMD is creating practical options for moms and families. It’s almost like bringing back the old-school idea of a country doctor and bringing it into the modern era. Ready to have a doctor in your pocket? Check it out! In This Episode You’ll Learn problems with the current healthcare system that led Yarone to start SteadyMD how many patients the typical primary care doctor has (hint: it’s in the thousands) why Yarone thinks doctors are just as unsatisfied as patients with the current healthcare system ways SteadyMD can complement your primary and pediatric care how SteadyMD docs “see” you without ever going into the office ways your SteadyMD doctor can work with pharmacies, labs, and specialists in your area how to be your own health care advocate and more! But after a recent trip to Europe, I am even more convinced that these are the only wines I will drink anymore. Here is the deal. Many conventional wines have added dyes, sugars, commercial yeast, fish bladders and some other unsavory ingredients. But even organic wines can have high amounts of sugar, in fact more than soda, they can have commercial yeast that are not gut friendly, or really high amounts of alcohol. Introduction Doc Smo here, your pedcast host. Thanks for joining me today for another edition of DocSmo.com, the pediatric podcast dedicated to children and their parents. I am very fortunate to have as my returning guest, Dr. Sheila Kilbane, an integrative pediatrician and expert about much of life, to talk to us about a very common pediatric health problem, otitis media. Anyone with children is very familiar with how frequently children are affected by otitis media or middle ear infections. These infections are complications of bad colds and we all know that children get a lot of colds. So lets see how an integrative pediatrician approaches a child with recurrent ear infections. Maybe Dr. Kilbane just might be able to help your children avoid that ear infection nastiness this winter. Welcome Dr. Kilbane. Question 1:Why do children get ear infections? Question 2: For children with CHRONIC EAR INFECTIONS of CHRONIC EAR CONGESTION, how does the Integrative approach different than traditional pediatrics? (Decrease mucous/ enhance immune response/ decrease inflammation/avoid antibiotics) Question 3: How do you do these things? (Stop dairy, probiotics, vitamin D, immunocap, and correct structural problems) Question 4: Which children do you suspect have structural problems in their Eustachian tubes? Question 5: How do you reduce inflammation in a child's body? Question 6: Which children is the integrative approach most appropriate for? Let's summarize the integrative approach -Reduce mucous production from inhaled allergy and oral allergy to food, mostly milk -Correct structural problems -Enhance child's immune system -Reduce inflammation by changing diet Outro Well, Dr. Kilbane, as always, you bring a fresh approach and viewpoint to both parents and physicians and I really appreciate that. You and I are on the same page; we both want to inform parents and make things better for children. I can't thank you enough for sharing your time and expertise with us today. This is Dr. Paul Smolen, you know, Doc Smo, thanking you for joining us and hoping your little dears, always have nice clearears. Until next time.

The book was written by a pediatrician that every pediatrician of my era is familiar with, Dr. Frank Oski. Dr. Oski was not only the Chairman of Pediatrics at John's Hopkins Medical Center but also the author of numerous articles, textbooks of pediatrics and a parenting book titled The Practical Pediatrician. Dr. Oski was about as mainstream pediatrics as they came and one very smart fellow. So why was Dr. Kilbane so interested in me reading what Dr. Oski had to say about children and dairy intake? I knew that Dr. Kilbane believes that children should not consume any dairy after their first birthday and that she believed that the milk from cows is very harmful to the health of children and adults for that matter. I guess she figured I was old enough and ready to her the truth about the milk of cows as food for humans. Well I did read it and here goes, my review and thoughts of Dr. Oski's book, Don't Drink Your Milk. Dr. Frank Oski's book approaches the subject of the nutritional value of milk the way you would expect an academic pediatrician would, sighting articles and research to justify his positions. He contends that his research revealed to him that not only is cow's milk not nutritious for children or adults, but that it actually causes a lot of physical harm. Here is a synopsis of what Dr. Oski's take on the the research that he presents; The saturated fat found in cow's milk is a major cause of heart attacks and strokes in the western world where it is consumed throughout life. Most children and adults develop lactose intolerance, that is the inability to digest the sugar in cow's milk after infancy and therefore cannot digest the sugar lactose, that is so abundant in cow's milk. Lactose intolerant children and adults become sick when they consume lactose. Milk is a very high calorie food but lacks iron, an essential nutrient that children need. Consuming a lot of cow's milk starves these children of needed iron and makes them susceptible to iron deficiency's devastating effects on a growing child including developmental delays and frequent infections. Many infants and young children are allergic to the proteins in cow's milk therefore causing a serious gut allergy called allergic colitis. So why, with all this medical evidence of serious harm coming from the consumption of cow's milk, does the Academy of Pediatrics, the USDA, and the Center for Disease Control continue to insist that children should get three servings of lean dairy each day after the age of two years? Dr. Oski addresses this dilemma with a blunt discussion of the power of marketing. He contends that the dairy industry has a vested interest in keeping the American population drinking milk and that marketing that message works! Here we are, 48 years after the first edition of Don't Drink Your Milk was published and we are still debating the same argument. The dairy industry is either right (milk is an essential and great food) or the dairy industry marketing machine is able to drown out the truth about the health problems associated with milk consumption. Dr. Oski is now dead and gone, having died in 1996 of prostate cancer. What a shame and how ironic that he would die of a disease that many now believe can be fueled by the milk protein called casein that is found so abundantly in cow's milk. For more on that subject, I refer you to my book review of The China Study, by Dr.T Colin Campbell. So what are parents and pediatricians going to do with all the indicting evidence that Dr. Oski, an extremely well informed pediatrician, presents in his book,
