IN THE SHOW Where or how have you felt most alive this week? Sue’s been to a rescheduled International Women’s Day event and been inspired by the three ‘celebrity’ speakers who very openly shared the personal stories and challenges that lay behind their individual and unique achievements – particularly the topic of navigating ‘difference’ in the world today. Sherry, as usual, has been out and about continuing her training, being inspired by nature. It’s definitely her space for not only getting creative but also for finding inner peace in her day and week.  (01.30 – 7.06) How have you been challenged? Crikey – we cover some ground in this episode! We follow on from our last podcast where we talked about setting big hairy audacious goals, and look at how to set ourselves up for success. We briefly revisit some of the key points in goal setting, as an essential component in achieving success, and also look at how we recognise the gap between where we are and where we want to be, and what we can do to move us on!  Sherry shares how she has really been examining her goals, since our last conversation, and critically appraising whether or not her proposed actions will truly move her closer to the goal.  We also explore the importance of balance in achieving our most amazing life so that it’s not all about work! We conclude by sharing our own personal top tips for being confident in who we are and achieving success in what we do – drawing on our personal, corporate and entrepreneurial experience. (07.07 – 40.45) ** Regrettably, due to Sherry’s recent health news and surgery, we have had to postpone our next event until 2019. Watch this space for other possibilities to work with us during the autumn! So where are you building momentum right now? As we keep saying, momentum is critical in getting past the Tipping Point. Sue has completed the  Mission Map (and here’s another shout out for Alison Jones who sneaks into almost every episode!) for her Mission Unstoppable programme – bringing together the core skills that change makers and legacy leavers need, to be their best selves in leading their mission.  Sherry is continuing work on her Career Confidence Hub and is looking forward to gathering feedback from prospective clients before getting ready for the big launch later this year. (40.46 – 46.14)  How have you been inspired this week? Sue’s been inspired, at the funeral of a very good friend, by a poem about ‘the dash’ that represents the life lived, in between a person’s year of birth and year of death. An incredibly powerful challenge when we stop to consider the meaning of a simple hyphen when it is used to signify the meaning of our life.   Sherry’s been inspired by Vicky Warr, one of her fellow master-minders, who has completely re-recorded every video in her daily online fitness programme, to better meet the needs of her clients – such consistency and resilience!  (46.15 – 50.32) What else or what next? Sue shares one of the key messages from the women’s event she mentions at the beginning of the pod – to keep on looking forward, focussing on what you have yet to do, not what you may not yet have achieved. Sherry commits to looking after herself more and to keep on doing so! IN THE SHOW Where or how have you felt most alive this week? Sue’s been blown away by a recent episode of one of the UK’s Continuing Dramas exploring male rape and male suicide –  often taboo subjects, both explored with rawness and respect – and drawing true excellence from the whole production team.   Sherry thoroughly enjoyed her weekend with her NCT Tribe (especially the geeky bits!), in particular the sense of ‘coming home’ when spending time with people with similar intentions, values and ambitions. Delighted that On The Tipping Point got a special mention at the event! (01.40 – 8.50) How have you been challenged? This week we talk about setting intentions and big hairy goals! Our big goals are the ones that motivate us to keep going, no matter how scary or daunting they are.   There’s something about setting audacious goals that ensures they are energising and challenging and also very personal to us as individuals. No-one’s ever been excited by a SMART goal, right?! We explore how to set goals and intentions in a way that not only lights our fire, but also helps us to gather personal evidence that we are specifically achieving what we set out to achieve, in a way that keeps us on track with our mission. (08.51 – 36.32) So where are you building momentum right now? As we keep saying, momentum is critical in getting past the Tipping Point. Sue has a new online course that has just gone live, a version of the flow challenge, in partnership with CareerCake.com – another alliance with fantastic women who are on a mission to help people take control of their careers!   Sherry remains hugely busy with her NCT project and is therefore looking at how to get into consistent and sustainable habits of self care to be fit for the task ahead. (36.33 – 40.30) How have you been inspired this week? Sue’s been inspired by some feedback she received on her Advanced Communication Skills course, where someone used one of the techniques she taught on the course to re-visit and clear a negative experience from earlier in their career which had huge impact on their career since. It turned into a powerful reminder that we don’t need to be perfect in what we do to have a life-changing impact.Sherry shares a TED talk podcast she listened to, by Susan David, about emotional agility. Two quotes in particular resonated: “We own our emotions, not the other way around” and “Our emotions are simply data, we don’t need to allow our emotions to be directive.” (40.31 – 45.12) What else or what next? Sue decides she will be more audacious, especially in her mission mapping.   Sherry decides to set a big hairy goal for her business. We’ll feedback in due course!   (45.13 – 46.35)  Here are the resources mentioned in this week’s show: Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies By Jim Collins & Jerry Porras Sue’s new online course to help you find your flow: Being The Best You: Self Improvement Modelling On The Tipping Point LIVE! IN THE SHOW Where or how have you felt most alive this week?Sue’s been getting up close and personal with the triffid in her garden and, in doing so, found some hidden jewels that now have chance to thrive in the light and space she has created – just like us, when we have the right conditions to grow!   Sherry has had an amazing weekend, not only supporting at the London Marathon, but also running her latest Career Confidence workshop – one of her favourite ways of working! (01.35 – 08.05) How have you been challenged? This week we talk about the power of masterminds and working as part of a group to develop yourself and your business. Our business (or career) only grows as fast as we do, and masterminds in various formats were a consistent theme when we talked to our virtual conference guests about what had contributed to their success. We explore the benefits in terms of personal and business growth, accountability, challenge, support and the power that can be found through the reciprocity of belief. We share our own experience of being part of a mastermind to get past the tipping point, as well as what is important to us in leading groups and creating a blended experience that enables personal and business growth. (08.06 –36.35)   So where are you building momentum right now?   As we keep saying, momentum is critical in getting past the Tipping Point. Sue has completed the mission map for the new direction of her business, and has launched Mission Musings – a series of questions, thoughts or quotes about mission. Next steps – the development of her new online community and a new podcast to explore the personal stories of those change makers and legacy leavers who are on a mission to make a difference in the world. Sherry’s exploring options to continue to support new clients, whilst also fulfilling the demands of her current contract, and has opted for developing a Career Confidence Hub to help as many women as possible at an affordable level. (36.36 – 41.19)   How have you been inspired this week?   Sue’s reading Fearless by Steve Chandler – a book about having the courage to change the things you can, and shares some thoughts on fear that area based around a quote from Marcel Proust “The only real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes”.Sherry’s been inspired by one of the clients who attended her Career Confidence workshop and has been on fire ever since the weekend!  Not only has Marion immediately established a Women in Surveying community but has also set plans in place for a Virtual Conference to take her business forward. (41.19 – 46.05) What else or what next?Sue reflects on her new Mission Unstoppable strapline and the importance of never giving up on your mission and seeking the support that you need. Sherry reflects on a stressful few days in the NCT office (the joys of GDPR!) and the importance of reminding ourselves that these moments or phases in life and business do and will pass. IN THE SHOW Where or how have you felt most alive this week? Sue’s been taking new VIP clients through the ‘I Gotta Be Me’ intensive coaching experience and has been inspired by each client bringing the very best of themselves into the coaching and also their commitment to their personal and business growth in the year ahead. Sherry has signed up to a 26 mile hike across the South Downs in July and has been inspired not only by registering for the main event but by her first training session in the pitch black! (01.50 – 06.10) How have you been challenged? This week we talk about the power of taking action. We explore why taking action is important, the distinction between being and doing in business, and the differences between taking consistent steps and making inspired leaps. Whilst consistency, motivation and momentum are important factors in moving our business forward, it is also critical that the actions we take are focussed and in line with the strategic direction we want to move in. We share how we do this, who/what has helped us along the way and what we do when we get stuck. (06.11 – 29.15)         So where are you building momentum right now? As we keep saying, momentum is critical in getting past the Tipping Point. Sue’s been through a mini re-brand following the virtual conference in December and she’s really on a mission to explore ‘Mission Unstoppable’ and how she can support clients with discovery, design, development and delivery of their mission. Sherry’s excited about her new Career Confidence Membership Hub which is currently in development to make her career development resources openly available and more accessible to support a much broader audience online. (29.16 – 36.22) How have you been inspired this week? Sue’s been overwhelmed by the response to a single tweet looking for guests for a new podcast series where she will be interviewing inspiring ‘mission makers’  - people who are on a mission to make a difference in some way. Sherry’s been inspired by one of our guests from On The Tipping Point LIVE! Suzanne Dibble is a business leader who really knows how to take action and has taken the implementation of GDPR by the horns by establishing a Facebook community for small business owners which has grown exponentially due to the quality & clarity of advice, information and reassurance being released on a daily basis. (36.22 – 41.55) What else or what next? Sue concludes with a quote from Mark Twain: Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the things you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbour, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.   Sherry reflects on the discussion and notices how exciting she finds taking action and how constantly complexed she can be by those who don’t take action.  How wonderful we are all different! Right-click here to download the episode to your computer! The Notes In search of a different work-life balance, Sherry quit her job and jumped into entrepreneurship with both feet. She emailed her ideal clients and asked them what services they would be most interested in based on her skill sets, and the pieces fell into place one by one. Because she grew up with strong entrepreneurial role models, she knew that she could pursue a path of self-employment and gain the balance she wanted for her family, without sacrificing their income and quality of life. [bctt tweet="“If you don't love what you're doing, then what's the point?” - Sherry Bevan, FamilyPreneur Podcast Episode #8" username="TheMegBrunson"] By being clear with her family regarding whether she is in “business mode” or “mommy mode” it helps Sherry ensure that both her business and her family are getting the full-attention they deserve. [bctt tweet="“You can't be a good mother, or a good business owner, if you don't take care of yourself.” - Sherry Bevan, FamilyPreneur Podcast Episode #8" username="TheMegBrunson"] Sherry describes how she wrote her first book based partially on an autobiography and partially on the interviews she had conducted of a variety of other mothers. The book really takes a holistic approach at the importance of caring for ourselves and becoming confident mothers. She focuses very much on women who have taken a maternity leave and are returning to the workforce (whether self-employed, or not) with less confidence than they had before. Sherry explores some of the differences between men and women when it comes to how we display and perceive confidence. Ultimately, it's important that we both accept and value the differences and not worry about how others are perceiving us, but rather constantly strive to be the best version of ourselves. [bctt tweet="“Running a marathon is a bit like running a business” - Sherry Bevan, FamilyPreneur Podcast Episode #8" username="TheMegBrunson"] Running, and specifically marathon running, is Sherry's escape. Another perk of pursuing entrepreneurship was being able to schedule more time for training, as she aims to run one marathon per year. Running really helps her clear her mind and tend to both mental and physical wellness. Having an “escape” and focusing on self-care allows us to increase creativity and productivity, while reducing stress. She specialises in helping ambitious women get clear on what they really want, then find the confidence to take action and move forward in their career or business. She is a “been there done that” mom of two beautiful girls who have had her deal with many sleep challenges head on. Trained in the science of sleep by the Family Sleep Institute, Susie's blog has become a go-to resource for many parents of littles and her articles can be found in some of the most visited parenthood sites on including THE HUFFINGTON POST, BabyCenter and Baby World just to name a few. Through personalized consulting and online courses, Susie helps many exhausted families teach their babies, toddlers and preschoolers to LOVE sleep. Right-click here to download the episode to your computer! The Notes As a child, Susie always knew that she would have an “ah-ha” moment and start her own business - but, it never really came. So she pursued a business degree in college and spent a couple years right out of school pursuing a related career. She finally found her ah-ha moment in the middle of the night with her new baby who was a poor sleeper. She was inspired to learn more about baby sleep issues and help other parents, like her, find a better night sleep. [bctt tweet="“It ain't easy, but it's worth it” ~ Susie Parker, FamilyPreneur Podcast Episode #7" username="TheMegBrunson"] Susie was able to find a company that offers online certification program in sleep consulting. There are different options, and each company has their own approach to teaching and certifying. That being said, certification in this field is not required, but Susie credits it with helping to boost her confidence and credibility. A huge part of what makes Susie successful in her field is that she brings her personal experiences to the table. She is able to relate to her clients and use a combination of those personal experiences and her knowledge to help guide other parents through their sleep struggles. Susie's decision to keep her corporate 9-5 does not mean that her side-hustle is not profitable or successful. She really enjoys the work she does at her corporate job and has found a balance that works for her and her family, where she grows her business on in the evenings and weekends Susie and her husband both are big believers in diversifying their income streams. In addition to having his own corporate job, her husband also maintains a side-hustle by operating a vending company in Chicago. Then, they also have a rental property - which came about when they decided to move to the suburbs to grow their family, but could not sell their condo. However, it's important that we not push too hard. Sometimes the kids may be too young, or they're just not interested in the idea, and that has to be okay. We also have to make sure that we - as parents - are not overworking an idea that is supposed to be a fun learning experience for our children. If it's not the right time, put the idea to rest, and try again later. To find balance with all of their different income streams and family, they hired a nanny to help care for the children during the day. Initially, Susie tried to work with her kids at home without assistance, but quickly realized that she was not working as effectively as she could have been. Their family now benefits from using a nanny for the care of their children, and she credits an online scheduling tool for making scheduling so much easier for their family. In episode #2 of the FamilyPreneur Podcast, you will learn the number one piece of advice for pursuing entrepreneurship, from the perspective of each of our first 12 guests! Then, over the course of the next few weeks, you'll have the opportunity to listen to their full interviews in their entirety! Right-click here to download the episode to your computer! First, I'd like to introduce Angela Ferrari. Angela Ferrari is an artist, children's book author and illustrator based in Portland Maine. She is the creator and host of the Story Spectacular podcast. Angela grew up in the mountains of western Maine. Living in a rural setting, she developed a talent for finding creative ways to play and captivate her imagination. She has since expanded her artistic endeavors, writing and illustrating three children's books. Most recently Angela has launched Story Spectacular, a children's story podcast featuring original stories and classic retellings. #1 - Just go for it! - Angela Ferrari I would say that whatever you have inside you, whatever story you have to tell or creative venture you have, just go for it. I mean there's no excuse nowadays with all of the advantages we have with technology. You can not only, you know, write a book or make your own website. Not only do you have the tools to pursue, but you also have the tools to promote. Angela hit the nail on the head. Technology has made it easier than ever to monetize our passions. With the internet, we can create our storefront via a website, leverage social media for affordable marketing solutions, and research just about any question we have. Now, let's hear from Micala. Micala Quinn is a wife, mom, teacher, lifelong learner and founder of The Live Free Mama Movement. She helps moms launch their freelance business using the skills they already have so that they can have more freedom, flexibility, and financial stability to be the mom they want to be! Hi Micala, what advice do you have for new entrepreneurs? #2 - Done, Not Perfect - Micala Quinn Just one thing, and this is something that I follow and it's actually up on my wall. I'm in my office right now and I wanted this to be filled with inspirational and like happy thoughts. One of the phrases that I have been hearing from Dana Malstaff - it comes up in like all of her stuff on her Podcast and her group, and the Boss Mom retreat I went to. It's this idea of “done not perfect.” So if you're starting out and you are launching your freelance business - whatever services you are going to offer - just start! Get it out there. You don't have to have a website. You don't have to have a business Page. You just have to kind of have that clarity of what you're offering, and start telling people. That's great advice, Micala. It's easy to get overwhelmed with all of the things we think we need to do before we launch a business. But it's important to remember that you don't need to be perfect right out of the gate. You should not compare yourself to businesses who have been established for years. Everyone has to start somewhere and you dont need all the things right out out the gate. Focus on one thing at a time, and allow yourself to grow from there. Stacy Brookman has a great piece of advice to add. Stacy Brookman is a Resilience and Life Storytelling Expert and produces the Real Life Resilience podcast. Her mission is to tell stories of recovery from life's most difficult trauma and provide tools for resiliency for kids and adults. Hi Stacy, what is your top piece of advice? #3 - Start Small - Stacy Brookman Start small. You don't have to quit your job. I haven't yet quit my corporate job. I'm hoping to this next upcoming year. But you know, just go ahead and start. Start small. Make a lot of mistakes. That's okay. Make the mistakes when you're small. Like, I've tried to do some Facebook Lives and YouTube Lives and it took me a while before... Took me a lot of people are saying “There's no sound!” (Oh no!) It took me a while before I got the right formula. But you do it, and do it when you're small, and you can find that time. I take a lunch. You know, a lot of people in the corporate world don't take lunches. They just work right through it. That's my time I'm going to take it. I am going to step away from my desk. I'm going to work on my business. I think that's what everybody can and should do, because the way the economy is going is that there are more freelancers, more entrepreneurs, and you're giving yourself a boost for the future. Great addition, Stacy. Mistakes and even “failures” are essential steps to success. We have to make those mistakes in order to learn and improve. As moms it can also be hard to make time for ourselves, but I love how you found a way to carve time out of your lunch break - to work on your business a little bit each day. A “side hustle” can not only provide a great escape away from the mundane corporate world - a way to pursue our passions and it sparks the possibility for financial freedom. Susie Parker is our next guest - and she also works a corporate job alongside managing her successful business. Susie is a certified Sleep Consultant and founder of Sleep Baby Love, Child Sleep Consulting. She is a “been there done that” mom of two beautiful girls who have had her deal with many sleep challenges head on. Through personalized consulting and online courses, Susie helps many exhausted families teach their babies, toddlers and preschoolers to LOVE sleep. Welcome Susie, what is your number 1 piece of advice for parents pursuing entrepreneurship? #4 - It ain't easy. But it's worth it. - Susie Parker It ain't easy, but it's worth it! So, I found a business that I actually created where I was able to start with a lower investment. I mean I didn't have to create a product or anything. I had a website and I was able to through word of mouth get my first client, so that was a pretty good opportunity. If you can find something like that, without spending a ton of investment into branding or courses, at that point, just start your business. And then once you have clients and you have money coming in, figure out where you want to invest it. Getting rich happens for a lot of people, but it doesn't happen for everyone. I think these, “make a million dollars in a year,” you'd have to have a really premium price service, and if you're selling to your mom, I don't know necessarily that that's always the best service. So, you have to really figure out where you want to go, and don't get jealous of other people's success. Yes, it's definitely worth it! There are many many entrepreneurs who work a full time job while they are building the foundations of their “side hustle.” Starting a business with as little of an investment as possible is great advice, and then once you start making money you can reinvest that into expanding and growing your business. I also love that you mentioned not getting jealous of other people's success. Focus on improving yourself continuously, and draw inspiration from others, but know that people will follow you for being you. Next, let's hear from Vicki DeLuzio. Vicki echos some of Susie's advice, and adds her own perspective to it. Vicki is a blogging and homeschooling mom of 3 living in Surprise, Arizona (a suburb of Phoenix). Her and her husband are both entrepreneurs and she often and actively involves her children in her business. Hi Vicki, thanks for joining us! What's your best advice for someone thinking of starting their own business? #5 Make Financial Plans - Vicki DeLuzio You definitely have to know that you're not going to make money right off the bat, unless you have an incredible amazing idea, the percentage of that actually happening is so low. I mean, watch Shark Tank for instance.  The people who are on Shark Tank, they have struggled for years and years, and they don't live the high life. So, realize that whatever you're starting out with, it's not going to go from zero to 60. You need to be prepared with both... especially health insurance. Look up your options for that, have savings. Have a plan in place, and know that you might have to work part time, or someone might have to work part time just make ends meet. Don't go into severe debt, because it's a hard hole to climb out of. And the stress of debt can be horrible on a family. Make sure you have a plan in place. Make sure you have a savings set aside. That would be my advice.   As I mentioned before, There are many many entrepreneurs who start their businesses alongside a full time job, which allows them to maintain the perks and benefits of full-time employment - like health insurance. Some people hope to leave their corporate jobs some day, while others are content with balancing both on a more long-term basis. In either situation, self-employment provides a safety net in case something out of your control happens with your corporate job. Next, I'd like to welcome Kiki to the show. Kiki is my 10-year-old daughter, who you met in episode #1, and I'd like to remind you about the advice she indicated she'd give to her little sister, who recently indicated an interest in starting her own business. Hi Kiki, what advice would you offer your sister - or any of your friends - if they told you that they wanted to start their own business? #6 Mentoring and Coaching - Kiki I would start telling them about my business and how my business works. And we can work a little on both of our businesses together. So I can help her and teach her most of the stuff. I think that will be pretty helpful. Like me telling her like if you want a website maybe you should do this or that. I think I can pretty much help people by doing that. So…it sounds like what you would do if your sister or a friend wanted to start a business is try to figure out a way that you could work together. So like teamwork and help them figure things out along the way so it's you know it's almost like you'd want to be a coach to them kind of like I've been a business coach to you is that right? Yeah. So you think that you would just like to be a friend and help them through their questions and their problems in the best ways that you can. Yeah I want to try and help them so, yeah. What happens if you don't know an answer than you do? Maybe I would ask my business coach since she knows a lot more than me. Kiki is really onto something - she understands, even at a young age, that it takes a village. She's able to identify that she needs help and support from other, more experienced business owners in order to grow her business - and that she can extend her knowledge and expertise to entrepreneurs who are not quite where she is yet. It's this concept of building a tribe, or forming a mastermind group, that Lisa Betts-LaCroix also explores with us. Lisa is a speaker, actor, dancer and host of the Super Power U podcast. She speaks on the future of Education, has been featured in over 100 film and television roles and, though she began dancing late in life, she holds a World Title in Pro-Am American Rhythm Ballroom Dance. Lisa's parents were both entrepreneurs, she married an entrepreneurial husband, and her experiences with education and entrepreneurship have influenced her approach on homeschooling her children. Hi Lisa, what is your number one piece of advice for entrepreneurs? #7 We need a tribe - Lisa Betts-LaCroix We need a tribe. We need connections. We need support. And one of the things I noticed in our current life is that people often feel isolated. I have the belief that it is - if you feel isolated - it is on you. It is a possibility for you and the tools are in place for you to go out and create a community for yourself. The key thing I'd say about building community and making connections with people is that it's possible for everyone to do. And the key thing is to look at what you need and what kind of support you want.  If you can scratch your own itch and meet your own need, and then bring other people into that, you probably will be both contributing greatly to people in ways that they will appreciate, and at the same time you'll synergistically be building a support network that you need for yourself. It's definitely easy to feel isolated both as a parent and as an entrepreneur. While I think in-person networking and support networks are really important, it's also important to keep in mind that technology makes it totally possible to find virtual support as well. Having a “tribe” or forming a mastermind group with other entrepreneurs who are at a similar place in their business is a great way to collaborate and find success together. Monique Parker is an academic life coach, author, and public speaker. She empowers and equips teens and young adults to experience success in school and in life, while preparing them for adulthood. Monique shares her number one piece of advice, both for parents and for teens and young adults… Welcome Monique, what advice do you have for exploring entrepreneurship? #8 Think outside of the box- Monique Parker So I am going to give two-fold because you know my heart is for the young people. That's good, give us two answers: parent-perspective and kiddo-perspective. Parent perspective would be to remember that your child is a little person. These are people that you are developing. As a parent entrepreneur, just like you would spend so much time in building your business, is your responsibility - and should be your duty, your choice, your love, and your passion to build up your young people to be a responsible adult. (I love that) For teens and young adults, I would say to walk to your own beat, do not feel like you have to be like everybody else. Give yourself grace. Give yourself love for yourself, to realize that you were innately born with special gifts to help the world. Help the masses, which in turn will benefit you and bless you. So I would say to you, as young people, to find your path, find it early, and shine brightly in that area. And do it because you want to do it, and because you love to do it, and because you love yourself enough that you want to be the best that you can be. Don't feel like you have to be in the box - Parents and teens - they don't have to be doctors and don't have to be lawyers. Find what your child is naturally gifted at and help them make a business off of that, and thrive off of that. I love Monique's perspective. Whether you have yourself or your child in mind… We all have special gifts, and those translate into marketable skills. Our paths are all going to look different because they all are beginning and ending in different places. And it's important to remember that there is no need to follow someone else's path. Even success looks differently to different people. And Sherry Bevan agrees. Sherry is a former Global Head of IT Service in an international law firm, she now runs The Confident Mother, an independent coaching practice. Sherry has been running her own business since 2012 and works as an author, coach and speaker. She specialises in helping ambitious women get clear on what they really want, then find the confidence to take action and move forward in their career or business. Hi Sherry, what is the best advice you have for parent entrepreneurs? #9 Be You - Sherry Bevan Oh, I think my number one piece of advice is the more you can be you, and be uniquely and unapologetically you, then the better things will be. Just be yourself, because nobody else can be you, in the same way as you can. That's great, Sherry. We did touch on this earlier as well. Just be you. Don't worry about the competitors in your niche - don't worry about trying to make everyone like you. As a matter of fact, it's impossible to make everyone like you! Identify your passion, build your business, and let your personality shine through. YOU are what sets your business apart from your competition. Sarah Humes dives deeper into self-reflection with her advice. Although Sarah is relatively new to the business world, she has been doing the wife and mom thing for about 13 years now. She is married to her husband David, and they and their children, bravely entered the business world with a company called In-Courage Living. Their mission? To help people do brave things---every day! #10 Identify your core values - Sarah Humes I would truly encourage anybody getting into business - parents or not parents - to make sure you know what your core values are. Knowing what you stand for, and what you believe in. I think when you go to make big changes in your life, and I know for me my business was a huge change in lifestyle -  How to run my family, how to run my household - knowing what my core values are, they give me an anchor to come back to. Just the other day, I kind of had one of those moments where I felt like the household was kind of falling apart, learning how to run a household and a business is a lot of work- but, I had my core values to come back to. And I knew that I didn't want to yell at the people in my household, because kindness is a core value in our household. And I knew that I wanted to get my household back in order, because hospitality is one of our core values.  I have those core values to come back to you and knowing what they are just always is an anchor for me. They anchor my business, they anchor my family, and they anchor me personally. Once you know what your core values are they can help give you a mission statement in your business and in your family. And they have just helped propel me along, every step of the way. Knowing that about myself has just given me purpose and I think that that is just one of the the most important things you can do. I really like that - our family doesn't have identified core values, but it's officially a project on my to-do list! The past couple pieces of advice have really focused on being you, being unique, identifying your passions and values. And once you have identified where your strengths really lie, Cat Stancik has some advice for you. Cat is known for her tough love approach that gets clients into focused action so that they can get out of overwhelm and create big results with significantly less effort! She works with high achieving entrepreneurs who want to stop focusing on the glorified 6 and 7 figure marks, and finally enjoy a profitable, balanced business. Cat is the founder of Action Incubator™, a sought-after speaker, and Bestselling Author of 7 Principles for a More Productive and Fulfilling Life. Hey Cat, can you share your number one piece of advice with us? #11 You Don't Have to Do Everything - Cat Stancik You don't have to do everything in your business. I know that especially for new entrepreneurs, you know, at  any stage of the game this is true. You do not have to do everything in your business. You get focused on the things you need to do. Stay in your brilliance. And delegate the rest of that. So, I know that's like 3 different pieces of advice but they kind of link into each other, puzzle piece wise. Ultimately, you are not supposed to do everything in your business. Stay in your swim lane. Stay in your brilliance. That's where you enjoy playing. Do that! Don't concede and do stuff that you aren't great at doing. Have someone else who is great at doing it, do it! (Outsource and delegate) Yeah baby. As entrepreneurs, and as moms, we're always trying to do it all. But, it doesn't have to be that way. It shouldn't be that way. Much in the same way as we talked about finding a tribe and masterminding, it's okay to delegate tasks to others and even outsource elements of your business. This allows you to have better focus on the things you are best at - often times you can even outsource the things you just don't like doing - and that will help you be more efficient within your business. If you've been counting, you know that there is one piece of advice left, and it comes from Hannah B. King. Hannah is an off-beat, sunshine-&-sea-lovin' mama of two, an intuitive success mentor for creative entrepreneurial mamas, and a wild travelin' gypsy at heart. She has been an avid student of some of the best spiritual teachers, thought leaders, and intuitive healers around the world for the past 15 years. She is now on a mission, creating a movement of modern day mama's, collectively inspired on their journey of radical transformation and quantum growth, guiding them to create their dream desired lifestyle on their own terms. She spends her time tromping in waterfalls with her family or camping on the beaches on her island home of Maui, HI. Hey, Hannah, what is your number one piece of advice for our listeners? #12 Surrender & Grace - Hannah B. King I feel like there's one word that I have brought with me through my journey into becoming a mama. I had a very unusual entry into motherhood, than being pregnant, giving birth, becoming a mama, and then the role of parenthood, and then now raising my business. There's one word that has always been, I think, the ultimate saving grace and that is “surrender.” We want to hold on so tight to how we think something should go. And when we let go, and when we surrender and allow things to occur - even if it's the really sucky stuff, even if it's like, “I'm miserable.” Just surrender, and allow things to occur versus the tight grip on, “It's got to be just this way.”  This can apply to everything from pregnancy, birth, motherhood, business, all the things... money, relationships, everything. We have these ideas, and we want to feel like we're in control of how they how they go. And I just think, it's the one thing that I tell everybody, which is just let go and surrender, and let things occur, and see what unfolds for you. Is it always easy? Absolutely not. But, surrender is key - to anything - to any growth that we want in our lives. So, I would say that would be the biggest number 1… One more thing, which would be to give yourself grace, and to be kind to yourself. Whether you're raising a business and you're doing an entrepreneurial endeavor, or you're raising your family - it is big work. It is hard work. And it is beautiful magical work. But it is not going to be enjoyable if we are beating ourselves up. So, give yourself kindness and love and respect. And when you're struggling with that, imagine yourself as your as your children. Imagine how you love your children. You might want to scream at them, and shake them sometimes, because they're driving you crazy. But ultimately, then you just want to hug them, and you want to love them - and that's how we have to treat ourselves. It's like the little girl, or the little boy in us, they just need love. We just need love. So be willing to. You know when you're really wanting to beat yourself up, look at yourself as if you look at your children. It's just pure love. And that will get you through everything. We just need love. So be willing to. You know when you're really wanting to beat yourself up, look at yourself as if you look at your children. It's just pure love. And that will get you through everything. Can I just say how amazing it has been to work with these 12 women to put not only this value-packed episode together, but to put together each of the first 13 episodes of the FamilyPreneur Podcast! In the show … Where or how have you felt most alive this week? Sue’s been back in the mountains and is magically rewarded for not turning back, and Sherry’s been running in the pouring rain – we’re all about nature this week! (01.25 – 07.10) How have you been challenged? Sherry’s seriously unimpressed that she’s been told she can’t change the world (she darn well will!) which sparks a discussion on the importance of the Big Why.  As leaders, should we have a ‘one thing’ that drives everything we do, if we feel we have ‘a calling’ where does it come from, and do we have to know our ultimate purpose to live a purposeful life?  Do we have all the answers?  No, because we’re on our personal journey with purpose too… but we’re happy to share what we’ve learned so far! (07.10 – 32.30) So where are you building momentum right now? That magic M word that takes us beyond the tipping point! Sue’s brutally honest about needing to be more consistent and shares the three new habits she wants to introduce into her professional practice. Sherry’s made a big decision and she’s making the TV show a reality. First step – initial discussions with a Production Company!  (32.30 – 39.40) How have you been inspired this week? Sue has been inspired by Wimbledon (no surprises there!) and, in particular, the self confidence of the 9 year old that, this week, became the World Number 4. As a passionate cyclist, Sherry’s been inspired by the courage and resilience of the cyclists competing in the Tour de France. There’s nothing like success to inspire success!  (39.40 – 46.18) What else or what next? In a final moment of reflection, just as in any coaching session, we share what we noticed during our conversation. Sue commits to creating consistent habits that will help her build momentum, and Sherry’s staying focussed on her big why.  Watch out world!  (46.18 – 48.10) Mentioned on the show and other useful links Today we mentioned two books you might like to check out if you’re interested in finding out more about living on Purpose: The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan   Start With Why by Simon Sinek   Enjoyed the show? IN THE SHOW ...  Where or how have you felt most alive this week? Sue’s discovered she’s not ready to die, courtesy of a disagreement with the Sat Nav on a random mountain, and Sherry has been back in the Big Smoke, talking resilience and leadership in business with other business owners. (01.20 – 08.55) How have you been challenged? Sherry has noticed that Imposter Syndrome is factoring regularly in discussions with clients – it’s an oldie and a goodie!    We explore the links to acceptance and validation from ourselves and other people, and we chew over some of the differences in how men and women articulate concerns about self confidence & self worth.   There are some cracking examples of the impact of feedback on our personal performance too! (08.55 – 29.40) So where are you building momentum right now? The magic M word that takes us beyond the tipping point!  Sue’s going to be ‘zapping’ people at a speaking event, addressing “How to be Unstoppable”.  She only has 4.30 minutes to speak and she’s going experiential!  Sherry gets serious about creating her own TV show… watch for your invite to join her on her new sofa!  (29.50 – 34.25) How have you been inspired this week? Sue has been inspired by a TED talk on starting a Movement and she’s inspired Sherry to be the Lone Nut! Sherry introduces us to Storm in a D Cup, the story of the extraordinary life behind Rigby & Peller (34.30 – 40.05) What else or what next? In a final moment of reflection, just as in any coaching session, we share what we noticed during our conversation. Sue’s going to make space to remember her achievements along the journey, and Sherry is waving goodbye to her inner imposter.  (40.05 – 43.25) MENTIONED ON THE SHOW AND OTHER USEFUL LINKS Want to know more about Lone Nuts and How to Start a Movement? IN THE SHOW Where or how have you felt most alive this week? Sue’s been challenged to make a stand for who she is, and Sherry has been inspired by history and promise in the captivating streets of London.  (00.56 – 08.40) How have you been challenged? Sue questions something that is common for her clients, and increasingly the subject of social media discussions too.  How do we help people to deal with overwhelm?  Whether it’s bombardment with information, swimming in our own thoughts and emotions, or the dastardly to-do list, it’s easy to feel paralysed unless we have some strategies in place to keep moving.  We’ve been there too and share some of the things we have found helpful.  (08.40 – 25.12) Where are you building momentum right now? The magic M word that takes us beyond the tipping point!  Sherry gets passionate about her research into diversity in law and the importance of creating great connections, and Sue is taking her work on helping people to discover their ‘zone of genius’ to a new level.  (25.12 – 30.25) How have you been inspired this week? We’ll be honest. We spent so long staying out of overwhelm that we completely forgot to share our inspiration in this episode! We’re leaving the question here for you though, because it’s an important part of getting past and staying past the tipping point!Do give it some thought before next time. What else or what next? How to speak up confidently in meetings - Episode 007 This week's episode is about speaking up with confidence in meetings. I’m talking to Susan Heaton-Wright from Executive Voice. Susan helps people get heard in meetings, presentations or public speaking. I originally interviewed Susan for my first online conference in 2015. There's a whole chapter in my book based on that interview about how to project confidence through your voice and presence. Today we are talking specifically about how to speak up confidently in meetings without being pushy. This is for you if you worry about speaking up in meetings because you don't want to be laughed at or be ignored. Or your voice doesn't get heard. Many of the women that I work with tell me that they presented a great idea, for it to fall on deaf ears. Ten minutes later, somebody else presents that very same idea and everybody loves it. Susan shares her secrets on how to avoid that happening ever again. We also talk about: The common worries that we have about speaking up at meetings How to project confidence through our voice even when we don’t feel it inside How to sit at the table The importance of the non-verbal communication How to 'take up space' in meetings so that your presence is noticed One story I hear all the time “I made this great suggestion and it fell on deaf ears. Two weeks later, the same idea was presented by a man, and suddenly everybody loved it”. Can we fix that? Going back to work with confidence after a career break This week’s episode is about going back to work after a career break and how you can do this with confidence. I invited former client Ashley Aspin to share her personal experiences. Ashley graduated from Cardiff University with a degree in Music in 1997 and started her working life in London with a leading classical music management agency.  Two years later she took a post with the BBC Classical Music Department assisting the managing editor and working on some unique television programmes and events such as the Queen’s Jubilee Concerts at Buckingham Palace. Seeking a career change two years later, Ashley joined the fast-track management training scheme for Davy's Wine Bars in the City of London gaining great experience in the trade and learning about wine. She transferred these skills to recruitment in the hospitality sector and became Davy’s recruitment consultant at agency Berkeley Scott before taking a career break to bring up her young children. In 2012 she moved from London to the town of Marple, a small town in Greater Manchester on the edge of the Peak District. Whilst on her career break, Ashley took up several charitable causes. She volunteered for the National Childbirth Trust, as editor of the local branch newsletter; raised over £2000 for St John Ambulance by running the London Marathon and supported the local primary school by organising major fundraising events. She is now the HR Officer for the Laurus Trust, a newly established multi-academy trust in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport. She continues to contribute to the local community by assisting as a coach support worker for the girls teams at Marple Cricket Club which has over 90 junior members attending weekly, and of whom over a third are girls. In the show we discuss: How to maintain the intellectual challenge during your career break How volunteering helps you to acquire new skills and maintain existing ones The value of your skills gained through volunteering  Ashley's big worries before going back to work and how she worked through them all How to find work you love that fits around family Ashley's top tips for ambitious women who want to go back to work after a career break AND balance work and life “Stop looking for the perfect role and think about your skillset. Clara has built on over 15 years of recruitment, leadership, and coaching experience, and the most important qualification of all in her eyes, being a parent, to create The Balance Collective. Her fascination with what “makes a person tick” and personal development started with her degree in Psychology, many moons ago, and has continued through her work as a Branch Manager of a bespoke recruitment consultancy, to her Management role in a not-for-profit employability skills organisation. An eternal student, she is also a qualified Project Manager, DISC practitioner and is currently completing her coaching accreditation. Her clients comment that her approach “makes sense”; she likes to call it “coachject management” (coaching and project management combined!) The Balance Collective is a social enterprise working towards reducing maternal unemployment through training and coaching.  Clara helps parents to create the work-life balance they want through career and return to work individual and group coaching, as well as offering CV and flexible working request feedback, mock interviews and consultancy to business. In the show we discuss: A definition of work-life balance How important is it to have that balance How, as parents, we are role modelling for our children The difference between 'want' and 'should' Why it feels so hard to get that balance right - technology and society's expectations For women going back to work after a career break, how to approach employers about flexible working or part-time work Clara's top tips for ambitious women who want to confidently balance work and life "You can do anything but you can't do everything. Be realistic about what you can achieve in a day."  GUEST:  Clara Wilcox HOSTED BY: Sherry Bevan  Mentioned on the show Clara's website: The Balance Collective On Facebook: her page The Balance Collective with Clara Wilcox group Ask your questions or share your feedback Comment on the show notes Tweet me @SherryRB quoting CC005 #ConfidentConversations Email srb@sherrybevan.co.uk For more Confident Conversations connect with me On Twitter @SherryRB or search #ConfidentConversations Join my Facebook page Subscribe, rate and review in iTunes Sign up to my weekly newsletter

Confident Conversations is a weekly podcast show for ambitious women about confidently balancing work and life, hosted by me, Sherry Bevan, Author, Coach & Speaker. Because I love having conversations about career and confidence. This week's episode 004 Following last week's conversation with former BBC Apprentice candidate, Aleksandra King, this week I talk to Rebecca Jeffery fired in Week 6, after confusing tagine with tahini and soup for soap. And anyway, how's a Manchester girl supposed to know how far Streatham is from Canary Wharf. Known as Becs, she is a freelance copywriter, bookworm, mum, tea drinker and sausage dog owner. She joined her sister's company 3 years ago; together they have built a successful design & marketing business that fits around life and family. Her business plan for The Apprentice was built around recruiting other parents who want work that works. Our conversation (over a cup of tea, of course) discussed: how lonely it can be working for yourself the pros and cons of running a business with your sister how to make business work around your children she applied for The Apprentice on a whim, encouraged by her brain surgeon brother-in-law outsource the skills you don't have (like accounting which Fi & Becs outsource to their Dad!) being a parent doesn't make you any less ambitious in your career or your business Her top tip for ambitious women "Don't apologise for wanting to work in a different way."  GUEST: Rebecca Jeffery HOSTED BY: Sherry Bevan  Mentioned on the show Becs' website: fiandbecs.com or connect on Twitter @_rebeccajeffery, Instagram _rebeccajeffery. Confident Conversations is a weekly podcast show for ambitious women about confidently balancing work and life, hosted by me, Sherry Bevan, Author, Coach & Speaker. Because I love having conversations about career and confidence. This week’s episode 003 This week, I talk to Aleksandra King, Communications Consultant, and better known (this month) as the BBC Apprentice candidate who quit before she was fired. The day after she quit the show, I wrote a post for Birds on the Blog about whether she was right to quit. My take was that she had quit BECAUSE she is strong not because she’s not. And that she recognised the conflict with her core values. In this conversation with Aleksandra recorded a couple of weeks after she left the show, we discussed how your values affect how you work and who you choose to work with. We also discussed: the friendships she developed in the house how it was love at first sight when she met her husband how women are so often tough on ourselves and don’t ask for help her love of spreadsheets (music to my ears being an Excel geek myself) how she balances work and life her personal values and how these affect the way she works and who she chooses to work with whether or not The Apprentice is intrinsically biased against parents Aleksandra’s top tip for ambitious women “Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Asking for help doesn’t take anything away from you.”  GUEST: Aleksandra King HOSTED BY: Sherry Bevan  Mentioned on the show Aleksandra’s website: AleksandraKing.com or connect on Twitter @AleksandraBKing. Confident Conversations is a weekly podcast show for ambitious women about confidently balancing work and life, hosted by me, Sherry Bevan, Author, Coach & Speaker. Because I love having conversations about career and confidence. This week’s episode In a previous episode (CC001) I talked about overwhelm: signs we might notice, why we experience it, and how we can cope or even better prevent it. This week’s episode is about how to spot the signs of stress or overwhelm in our partners and how to deal with it. I turned to Gill Walton at Purple Skies Consulting to find out more about this topic. Gill works with people who are stuck in their careers and need help getting unstuck. And sometimes it’s stress that’s keeping them stuck. In the show we discuss: Signs of overwhelm, stress or burnout in our partners What we can do to support them How men deal with overwhelm and stress differently, putting emotions to one side Why men walk out of the room when they come home to a stressfest The caveman’s reaction to a fight or flight situation Gill’s top tip for ambitious women “It’s not the stress that is destructive, but the way that we respond to the stress”.  GUEST: Gill Walton HOSTED BY: Sherry Bevan  Mentioned on the show Gill’s website: Purple Skies Consulting or connect with Gill on Twitter @PurpleSkiesLtd The Compassionate Mind by Paul Gilbert Ask your questions or share your feedback Comment on the show notes Tweet me @SherryRB quoting CC002 #ConfidentConversations Email srb@sherrybevan.co.uk For more Confident Conversations connect with me On Twitter @SherryRB or search #ConfidentConversations Join my Facebook page Subscribe, rate and review in iTunes Sign up to my weekly newsletter

Sherry Bevan is the author of The Confident Mother, published by Practical Inspiration last year, and a confidence coach for women. In this episode she talks to me about the extraordinary impact the practice of Morning Pages has had on her life and her writing, and enjoys turning the tables as she coaches ME on writing my own book!  Lots to report this week, with the Quantum Conference and London Book Fair coming up, but despite it all good progress on the book, with the working title and structure nailed down and (whisper it) the first few hundred words written.
