He began by describing what a platform is from a few different perspectives, the benefits it brings, and what strategy we should think about when building a platform. Gregor also emphasized the opposite difference between platforms and IT services, with the key difference of how a platform thrives with more scale. We then had a few fun discussions discussing building a platform on top of a cloud platform, the key skillset we need to build a good platform, and how we should build a proper platform abstraction. Towards the end, Gregor also covered the recent trend of building developer platforms and business capability platforms. #152 What is ISO 20000 Service Management?

The ISO Show

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 18, 2023 22:33

Often seen as the poor cousin to ISO 9001, ISO 20000 Service Management largely gets ignored in favor of the more popular Quality Management Standard. To be fair, it's title may have done it a disservice in the past. Being known as the IT Service Management Standard prior to 2018, it was often perceived as only applicable to IT service providers, when in actuality it could be adopted by any business! So, what is ISO 20000 exactly? The aim of the standard is to provide a framework for an effective end-to-end service management system which encompasses the entire lifecycle of a service from concept and design, through to service removal and end-of-life. It's best adopted by businesses who provide a service, particularly those that operate a help / service desk system. In this weeks' episode, Steve Mason joins Mel to discuss what ISO 20000 is, who can use and benefit from the Standard and how it fits in with other more widely adopted ISO Standards. You'll learn ●      What is ISO 20000? ●      Who is ISO 20000 designed for? ●      What are the benefits of ISO 20000? ●      A brief overview of the Standard ●      How ISO 20000 integrates with other ISO Standards   Resources ●      isologyhub ●      ISO 20000   In this episode, we talk about: [00:50] Why are we talking about this Standard? We've had a lot of interest in a few of our informative videos available on YouTube over the past year, with ISO 20000 content constantly ranking in our top 5 most watched videos every month. [01:00]  ISO 20000-1 was previously known as the ‘IT Service Management Standard', but since it's most recent update in 2018, it's simply known as the ‘Service Management Standard' now. [03:10] Why is ISO 20000 one of Steve's favourite Standards? – It takes some of the aspects of quality a step further and actually gives you much clearer detail on how you can improve your management systems. So, if you've got a Service Management System in any way, shape or form, this is the standard to go. It's also one of the easiest standards to audit because there's some very simple questions to ask that can highlight some very obvious weaknesses. This can lead to significant improvement when compared to the likes of ISO 9001. [04:05] What Is ISO 20000? –  ISO20000-1:2018 is a Service Management standard which has evolved from the IT industry and the ITIL Framework for Service Management; but today it can be used in all types of Service Industries particularly where there is a need for a Help Desk / Service Desk system. Some may ask, isn't this what ISO 9001 can do? In short, no. ISO 9001 will give you a bare framework of how to create a Quality Management System, but it won't give you the fundamental details of how to improve that Service Management System, and that's where ISO 20000 comes in. [05:39] Who is ISO 20000 applicable to? – Any business that provides a service, but more specific examples include: IT Service provider, call centres, gas / electricity providers, retail ect. [07:15] A high level overview of ISO 20000 – This Standard follows the Standard structure that many other ISO Standards follow. The first 3 clauses are all informative, starting from clause 4 we have: ·       4.0 Context of the Organisation ·       5.0 Leadership ·       6.0 Planning ·       7.0 Support of Service Management System ·       8.0 Operation of the Service Management System ·       9.0 Performance Evaluation ·       10.0 Improvement Clause 8.0 is where ISO 20000 fills in the gaps for other Standards, as it covers topics such as: ·       Service Portfolio ·       Relationship and Agreement ·       Supply and Demand ·       Service Design, Build and Transition ·       Resolution ·       Service Assurance [08:20] Familiar to some – Those in Service Management may recognise some of those terms, but may not use that exact wording. For example ‘relationships and agreements' may be more commonly known as Service Level Agreements and Operating Level Agreements – which can be a business critical area for some. [10:45] What are the benefits of ISO 20000? -  Improve the planning and introduction of services: This standard would help you understand what it is you need to do to introduce that new service, go through the planning, testing through a proper change management system and launch through a release and deployment management system. SLA's and OLA's - Achieve Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and Operating Level Agreements (OLAs) will be achieved consistently month on month. Reduce Stress - It will help to reduce employee stress as service request, incident and problem queues become manageable. Knowledge articles can be created to document incidents and solutions for future reference. Improved quality of service through continual improvement gained from Incidents and Problem fixes resulting in both time and financial savings. [12:30] ISO 20000 to the rescue -  Steve recounts an experience he had at a company that had an outstanding issue ticket queue of 800. With the introduction of elements of ISO 20000, they we able to reduce this ludicrous amount down to 30! [14:05] A top recommendation -  We'd highly recommend that you consider doing a Gap Analysis against ISO 20000. Even if you have no plans to implement it, you can still benefit from the findings. [14:40] Further resources -  You can purchase the Standard directly from the ISO website. We also have a number of short courses covering specific clauses in ISO 20000, available in the isologyhub. [15:55] How does ISO 20000 fit in with other ISO Standards?-  ISO20000-1:2018 has now been remodelled using the High Level Standard (HLS) framework so that clauses 4 to 7 and 9 to 10 can all be interconnected with only minor differences due to the nature of each standard. Essentially, if you already have ISO9001:2015 or ISO27001:2013 most of the framework for ISO20000-1:2018 will have already been done; all that would be required is to address the service aspects in those six clause before tackling the main work in clause 8. [18:20] Business Continuity -  ISO 20000 specifies a section on ‘service continuity management' which can neatly slot in with ISO 22301 – the Standard for Business Continuity. While ISO 22301 focuses on the bigger picture, the ISO 20000 element focuses on how a service can continue for a customer during an incident or accident occurring. Ohne Zutun. Einfach so. Also musste der Kundendienst ran. What should you expect to pay for IT support for your business? How do you make sure you know exactly what you are paying for? What are all the services you are buying to keep your business cyber safe? The computer industry is still young, and there are not many guides in place to protect consumers. How do you determine if the fees that are billed are correct? It's great when the person who's paying the bill get's a “deal”. It's the worst when the person who sent the bill realizes that they forgot to charge for x, y, and z... again. No one likes to work and not get paid! The Development Exponent: A Leadership Perspective

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 18, 2020 37:12

As a top decision-maker, you know the difficult balance between caring for team members in a personal way and maintaining proper professionalism with your team. I don't believe there is a one-size-fits-all approach to this difficult issue, but I do believe there are guidelines that can serve to maintain the balance in effective and fruitful ways. My guest on this episode of the podcast is Jason Adamany, CEO and Founder of IT Service provider, Adesys, a company he started while he was still in college. Naturally, coming right out of college Jason was anything but a seasoned leader, but by applying a growth mindset to his leadership as well as to his company he's gleaned a wealth of personal experience that is ripe with takeaways on this topic. Modern business challenges brought on by COVID-19 Imagine this scenario: Your company's workforce includes individuals who have worked for the company for many years and for the entire company's existence, those team members have worked together, face to face, in the same facility. Then comes COVID-19, a worldwide pandemic that has forced companies to do business differently, by going entirely remote. Most of you don't have to imagine the scenario because you're living it. COVID-19 is no-doubt putting your leadership skills to the test, forcing you to learn new ways of cultivating and maintaining team culture in spite of the "new normal" of remote work. Jason Adamany says his entire staff is working remotely now. He's finding it difficult to foster the team environment in the ways he's used to, especially as new team members come on. He hopes that most of his team will come back on-site before long, but the unknown and ongoing aspects of the current situation place more demands on team members and as a result, the company. He's learning to stay flexible and seek to understand. As team members juggle the situations COVID-19 has thrust upon them, such as their children being participants in digital classrooms while staying home, company leaders have to be able to flex with the changing needs of their employees while still turning a profit. One of the primary tools leaders must employ in a situation like this clear and compassionate communication. Listening empowers leadership and encourages the team When top leaders care for their teams effectively, team members are then able to care for clients in unprecedented ways. That's the philosophy Jason Adamany has about the type of relationship leaders need to develop with team members. It's a difficult balance that has no cookie-cutter solutions, however, there are many ways leaders can move in this direction, and all of them begin with effective listening: Solicit feedback from your team Make sure your team can contribute in ways that are meaningful to them as individuals Keep in mind that each team member will define that differently Work diligently to create an environment team members want to be in Do the work needed to create happy team members Communicate clearly that you value and understand that they have a life outside of work  The line between professionalism and entering into team member's lives How involved should a leader be in the lives of their team members? Many would say that it's inappropriate and potentially improper for leaders to ask too many questions about the private lives of their team members. Others feel they can't lead their team members effectively if they don't know what those individuals are experiencing in life outside of work hours. Jason Adamany says that his approach is to take the issue on a case by case basis. Each individual on a team will have a unique comfort level when it comes to their leaders knowing the details of their private lives. So take it slow and easy. While the best way to be there for employees is to seek to understand what's going on outside of work, you may have to simply make it known that you are willing to listen and willing to help when and where your team members feel comfortable with that level of sharing. This is a tricky balance but a clear way that positive team culture, loyalty, and long-term commitment can be fostered. Listen to this episode to hear more! Hannah B King is an off-beat, sunshine-&-sea-lovin' mama of two, an intuitive success mentor for creative entrepreneurial mamas, and a wild travelin' gypsy at heart. She has been an avid student of some of the best spiritual teachers, thought leaders, and intuitive healers around the world for the past 15 years. At 23, while traveling solo through Southeast Asia she met a man and got pregnant a month and a half later. This unexpected and intense thrust into motherhood ultimately led her to discover her divinely innate and intuitive power as she began learning how to truly harness it and live more from her soul calling. She is now on a mission, creating a movement of modern day badass mama's, collectively inspired on their journey of radical transformation and quantum growth, guiding them to create their dream desired lifestyle on their own terms. She spends her time tromping in waterfalls with her family or camping on the beaches on her island home of Maui, HI. Right-click here to download the episode to your computer! The Notes Hannah was raised in a home with a diverse mixture of religious and spiritual beliefs including Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, and astrology. This really sparked her curiosity in a variety of different belief systems which all contributed to shaping the way in which she sees herself and the world. Since becoming a mother, she has really found a passion for helping other mamas become the best versions of themselves while growing their businesses. [bctt tweet="“Fear is always going to be present if we are on the leading edge of our growth.” ~ Hannah B. King, FamilyPreneur Podcast Episode #9" username="TheMegBrunson"] Initially she sought out helping other parents with young babies who were trying to be the mamas that they always dreamed of, but were overwhelmed with all of the different parenting types and the expectations they were placing on themselves. Then, her business naturally evolved into what it is today (and will continue to do so). There are so many mothers who are exploring entrepreneurship and so often there are mental blocks that are prohibiting them from finding success. Hannah is very mindset-focused on helping mamas to identify and overcome these blocks so that they can find success in their lives and with their businesses. She goes through 3 of the most often seen blockers she encounters with her clients, then the steps you should take to shift your mindset where those blockers are concerned. [bctt tweet="“Our Journey is what inspires the next step” ~ Hannah B. King, FamilyPreneur Podcast Episode #9" username="TheMegBrunson"] She is a big believer in not only making affirmations, but taking “baby step” actions to support those affirmations and bring about actual change in our lives. The key, she says, is to keep our eyes on the end goal, and make small attainable goals to guide our personal journey. Meet Hannah B. She emailed her ideal clients and asked them what services they would be most interested in based on her skill sets, and the pieces fell into place one by one. Because she grew up with strong entrepreneurial role models, she knew that she could pursue a path of self-employment and gain the balance she wanted for her family, without sacrificing their income and quality of life. [bctt tweet="“If you don't love what you're doing, then what's the point?” - Sherry Bevan, FamilyPreneur Podcast Episode #8" username="TheMegBrunson"] By being clear with her family regarding whether she is in “business mode” or “mommy mode” it helps Sherry ensure that both her business and her family are getting the full-attention they deserve. [bctt tweet="“You can't be a good mother, or a good business owner, if you don't take care of yourself.” - Sherry Bevan, FamilyPreneur Podcast Episode #8" username="TheMegBrunson"] Sherry describes how she wrote her first book based partially on an autobiography and partially on the interviews she had conducted of a variety of other mothers. The book really takes a holistic approach at the importance of caring for ourselves and becoming confident mothers. She focuses very much on women who have taken a maternity leave and are returning to the workforce (whether self-employed, or not) with less confidence than they had before. Sherry explores some of the differences between men and women when it comes to how we display and perceive confidence. Ultimately, it's important that we both accept and value the differences and not worry about how others are perceiving us, but rather constantly strive to be the best version of ourselves. [bctt tweet="“Running a marathon is a bit like running a business” - Sherry Bevan, FamilyPreneur Podcast Episode #8" username="TheMegBrunson"] Running, and specifically marathon running, is Sherry's escape. Another perk of pursuing entrepreneurship was being able to schedule more time for training, as she aims to run one marathon per year. Running really helps her clear her mind and tend to both mental and physical wellness. Having an “escape” and focusing on self-care allows us to increase creativity and productivity, while reducing stress. Right-click here to download the episode to your computer! The Notes As a child, Susie always knew that she would have an “ah-ha” moment and start her own business - but, it never really came. So she pursued a business degree in college and spent a couple years right out of school pursuing a related career. She finally found her ah-ha moment in the middle of the night with her new baby who was a poor sleeper. She was inspired to learn more about baby sleep issues and help other parents, like her, find a better night sleep. [bctt tweet="“It ain't easy, but it's worth it” ~ Susie Parker, FamilyPreneur Podcast Episode #7" username="TheMegBrunson"] Susie was able to find a company that offers online certification program in sleep consulting. There are different options, and each company has their own approach to teaching and certifying. That being said, certification in this field is not required, but Susie credits it with helping to boost her confidence and credibility. A huge part of what makes Susie successful in her field is that she brings her personal experiences to the table. She is able to relate to her clients and use a combination of those personal experiences and her knowledge to help guide other parents through their sleep struggles. Susie's decision to keep her corporate 9-5 does not mean that her side-hustle is not profitable or successful. She really enjoys the work she does at her corporate job and has found a balance that works for her and her family, where she grows her business on in the evenings and weekends Susie and her husband both are big believers in diversifying their income streams. In addition to having his own corporate job, her husband also maintains a side-hustle by operating a vending company in Chicago. Then, they also have a rental property - which came about when they decided to move to the suburbs to grow their family, but could not sell their condo. [bctt tweet="“I have a successful business, but I haven't felt that pull to leave my corporate job… I love that I work for myself, and I have a plan out if I need to” ~ Susie Parker, FamilyPreneur Podcast Episode #7" username="TheMegBrunson"] As an entrepreneur, Susie is always looking for opportunities to get her kids involved and interested in entrepreneurship. However, it's important that we not push too hard. Sometimes the kids may be too young, or they're just not interested in the idea, and that has to be okay. We also have to make sure that we - as parents - are not overworking an idea that is supposed to be a fun learning experience for our children. If it's not the right time, put the idea to rest, and try again later. To find balance with all of their different income streams and family, they hired a nanny to help care for the children during the day. Initially, Susie tried to work with her kids at home without assistance, but quickly realized that she was not working as effectively as she could have been. Their family now benefits from using a nanny for the care of their children, and she credits an online scheduling tool for making scheduling so much easier for their family. In episode #2 of the FamilyPreneur Podcast, you will learn the number one piece of advice for pursuing entrepreneurship, from the perspective of each of our first 12 guests! Then, over the course of the next few weeks, you'll have the opportunity to listen to their full interviews in their entirety! Right-click here to download the episode to your computer! First, I'd like to introduce Angela Ferrari. Angela Ferrari is an artist, children's book author and illustrator based in Portland Maine. She is the creator and host of the Story Spectacular podcast. Angela grew up in the mountains of western Maine. Living in a rural setting, she developed a talent for finding creative ways to play and captivate her imagination. She has since expanded her artistic endeavors, writing and illustrating three children's books. Most recently Angela has launched Story Spectacular, a children's story podcast featuring original stories and classic retellings. #1 - Just go for it! - Angela Ferrari I would say that whatever you have inside you, whatever story you have to tell or creative venture you have, just go for it. I mean there's no excuse nowadays with all of the advantages we have with technology. You can not only, you know, write a book or make your own website. Not only do you have the tools to pursue, but you also have the tools to promote. Angela hit the nail on the head. Technology has made it easier than ever to monetize our passions. With the internet, we can create our storefront via a website, leverage social media for affordable marketing solutions, and research just about any question we have. Now, let's hear from Micala. Micala Quinn is a wife, mom, teacher, lifelong learner and founder of The Live Free Mama Movement. She helps moms launch their freelance business using the skills they already have so that they can have more freedom, flexibility, and financial stability to be the mom they want to be! Hi Micala, what advice do you have for new entrepreneurs? #2 - Done, Not Perfect - Micala Quinn Just one thing, and this is something that I follow and it's actually up on my wall. I'm in my office right now and I wanted this to be filled with inspirational and like happy thoughts. One of the phrases that I have been hearing from Dana Malstaff - it comes up in like all of her stuff on her Podcast and her group, and the Boss Mom retreat I went to. It's this idea of “done not perfect.” So if you're starting out and you are launching your freelance business - whatever services you are going to offer - just start! Get it out there. You don't have to have a website. You don't have to have a business Page. You just have to kind of have that clarity of what you're offering, and start telling people. That's great advice, Micala. It's easy to get overwhelmed with all of the things we think we need to do before we launch a business. But it's important to remember that you don't need to be perfect right out of the gate. You should not compare yourself to businesses who have been established for years. Everyone has to start somewhere and you dont need all the things right out out the gate. Focus on one thing at a time, and allow yourself to grow from there. Stacy Brookman has a great piece of advice to add. Stacy Brookman is a Resilience and Life Storytelling Expert and produces the Real Life Resilience podcast. Her mission is to tell stories of recovery from life's most difficult trauma and provide tools for resiliency for kids and adults. Hi Stacy, what is your top piece of advice? #3 - Start Small - Stacy Brookman Start small. You don't have to quit your job. I haven't yet quit my corporate job. I'm hoping to this next upcoming year. But you know, just go ahead and start. Start small. Make a lot of mistakes. That's okay. Make the mistakes when you're small. Like, I've tried to do some Facebook Lives and YouTube Lives and it took me a while before... Took me a lot of people are saying “There's no sound!” (Oh no!) It took me a while before I got the right formula. But you do it, and do it when you're small, and you can find that time. I take a lunch. You know, a lot of people in the corporate world don't take lunches. They just work right through it. That's my time I'm going to take it. I am going to step away from my desk. I'm going to work on my business. I think that's what everybody can and should do, because the way the economy is going is that there are more freelancers, more entrepreneurs, and you're giving yourself a boost for the future. Great addition, Stacy. Mistakes and even “failures” are essential steps to success. We have to make those mistakes in order to learn and improve. As moms it can also be hard to make time for ourselves, but I love how you found a way to carve time out of your lunch break - to work on your business a little bit each day. A “side hustle” can not only provide a great escape away from the mundane corporate world - a way to pursue our passions and it sparks the possibility for financial freedom. Susie Parker is our next guest - and she also works a corporate job alongside managing her successful business. Susie is a certified Sleep Consultant and founder of Sleep Baby Love, Child Sleep Consulting. She is a “been there done that” mom of two beautiful girls who have had her deal with many sleep challenges head on. Through personalized consulting and online courses, Susie helps many exhausted families teach their babies, toddlers and preschoolers to LOVE sleep. Welcome Susie, what is your number 1 piece of advice for parents pursuing entrepreneurship? #4 - It ain't easy. But it's worth it. - Susie Parker It ain't easy, but it's worth it! So, I found a business that I actually created where I was able to start with a lower investment. I mean I didn't have to create a product or anything. I had a website and I was able to through word of mouth get my first client, so that was a pretty good opportunity. If you can find something like that, without spending a ton of investment into branding or courses, at that point, just start your business. And then once you have clients and you have money coming in, figure out where you want to invest it. Getting rich happens for a lot of people, but it doesn't happen for everyone. I think these, “make a million dollars in a year,” you'd have to have a really premium price service, and if you're selling to your mom, I don't know necessarily that that's always the best service. So, you have to really figure out where you want to go, and don't get jealous of other people's success. Yes, it's definitely worth it! There are many many entrepreneurs who work a full time job while they are building the foundations of their “side hustle.” Starting a business with as little of an investment as possible is great advice, and then once you start making money you can reinvest that into expanding and growing your business. I also love that you mentioned not getting jealous of other people's success. Focus on improving yourself continuously, and draw inspiration from others, but know that people will follow you for being you. Next, let's hear from Vicki DeLuzio. Vicki echos some of Susie's advice, and adds her own perspective to it. Vicki is a blogging and homeschooling mom of 3 living in Surprise, Arizona (a suburb of Phoenix). Her and her husband are both entrepreneurs and she often and actively involves her children in her business. Hi Vicki, thanks for joining us! What's your best advice for someone thinking of starting their own business? #5 Make Financial Plans - Vicki DeLuzio You definitely have to know that you're not going to make money right off the bat, unless you have an incredible amazing idea, the percentage of that actually happening is so low. I mean, watch Shark Tank for instance.  The people who are on Shark Tank, they have struggled for years and years, and they don't live the high life. So, realize that whatever you're starting out with, it's not going to go from zero to 60. You need to be prepared with both... especially health insurance. Look up your options for that, have savings. Have a plan in place, and know that you might have to work part time, or someone might have to work part time just make ends meet. Don't go into severe debt, because it's a hard hole to climb out of. And the stress of debt can be horrible on a family. Make sure you have a plan in place. Make sure you have a savings set aside. That would be my advice.   As I mentioned before, There are many many entrepreneurs who start their businesses alongside a full time job, which allows them to maintain the perks and benefits of full-time employment - like health insurance. Some people hope to leave their corporate jobs some day, while others are content with balancing both on a more long-term basis. In either situation, self-employment provides a safety net in case something out of your control happens with your corporate job. Next, I'd like to welcome Kiki to the show. Kiki is my 10-year-old daughter, who you met in episode #1, and I'd like to remind you about the advice she indicated she'd give to her little sister, who recently indicated an interest in starting her own business. Hi Kiki, what advice would you offer your sister - or any of your friends - if they told you that they wanted to start their own business? #6 Mentoring and Coaching - Kiki I would start telling them about my business and how my business works. And we can work a little on both of our businesses together. So I can help her and teach her most of the stuff. I think that will be pretty helpful. Like me telling her like if you want a website maybe you should do this or that. I think I can pretty much help people by doing that. So…it sounds like what you would do if your sister or a friend wanted to start a business is try to figure out a way that you could work together. So like teamwork and help them figure things out along the way so it's you know it's almost like you'd want to be a coach to them kind of like I've been a business coach to you is that right? Yeah. So you think that you would just like to be a friend and help them through their questions and their problems in the best ways that you can. Yeah I want to try and help them so, yeah. What happens if you don't know an answer than you do? Maybe I would ask my business coach since she knows a lot more than me. Kiki is really onto something - she understands, even at a young age, that it takes a village. She's able to identify that she needs help and support from other, more experienced business owners in order to grow her business - and that she can extend her knowledge and expertise to entrepreneurs who are not quite where she is yet. It's this concept of building a tribe, or forming a mastermind group, that Lisa Betts-LaCroix also explores with us. Lisa is a speaker, actor, dancer and host of the Super Power U podcast. She speaks on the future of Education, has been featured in over 100 film and television roles and, though she began dancing late in life, she holds a World Title in Pro-Am American Rhythm Ballroom Dance. Lisa's parents were both entrepreneurs, she married an entrepreneurial husband, and her experiences with education and entrepreneurship have influenced her approach on homeschooling her children. Hi Lisa, what is your number one piece of advice for entrepreneurs? #7 We need a tribe - Lisa Betts-LaCroix We need a tribe. We need connections. We need support. And one of the things I noticed in our current life is that people often feel isolated. I have the belief that it is - if you feel isolated - it is on you. It is a possibility for you and the tools are in place for you to go out and create a community for yourself. The key thing I'd say about building community and making connections with people is that it's possible for everyone to do. And the key thing is to look at what you need and what kind of support you want.  If you can scratch your own itch and meet your own need, and then bring other people into that, you probably will be both contributing greatly to people in ways that they will appreciate, and at the same time you'll synergistically be building a support network that you need for yourself. It's definitely easy to feel isolated both as a parent and as an entrepreneur. While I think in-person networking and support networks are really important, it's also important to keep in mind that technology makes it totally possible to find virtual support as well. Having a “tribe” or forming a mastermind group with other entrepreneurs who are at a similar place in their business is a great way to collaborate and find success together. Monique Parker is an academic life coach, author, and public speaker. She empowers and equips teens and young adults to experience success in school and in life, while preparing them for adulthood. Monique shares her number one piece of advice, both for parents and for teens and young adults… Welcome Monique, what advice do you have for exploring entrepreneurship? #8 Think outside of the box- Monique Parker So I am going to give two-fold because you know my heart is for the young people. That's good, give us two answers: parent-perspective and kiddo-perspective. Parent perspective would be to remember that your child is a little person. These are people that you are developing. As a parent entrepreneur, just like you would spend so much time in building your business, is your responsibility - and should be your duty, your choice, your love, and your passion to build up your young people to be a responsible adult. (I love that) For teens and young adults, I would say to walk to your own beat, do not feel like you have to be like everybody else. Give yourself grace. Give yourself love for yourself, to realize that you were innately born with special gifts to help the world. Help the masses, which in turn will benefit you and bless you. So I would say to you, as young people, to find your path, find it early, and shine brightly in that area. And do it because you want to do it, and because you love to do it, and because you love yourself enough that you want to be the best that you can be. Don't feel like you have to be in the box - Parents and teens - they don't have to be doctors and don't have to be lawyers. Find what your child is naturally gifted at and help them make a business off of that, and thrive off of that. I love Monique's perspective. Whether you have yourself or your child in mind… We all have special gifts, and those translate into marketable skills. Our paths are all going to look different because they all are beginning and ending in different places. And it's important to remember that there is no need to follow someone else's path. Even success looks differently to different people. And Sherry Bevan agrees. Sherry is a former Global Head of IT Service in an international law firm, she now runs The Confident Mother, an independent coaching practice. Sherry has been running her own business since 2012 and works as an author, coach and speaker. She specialises in helping ambitious women get clear on what they really want, then find the confidence to take action and move forward in their career or business. Hi Sherry, what is the best advice you have for parent entrepreneurs? #9 Be You - Sherry Bevan Oh, I think my number one piece of advice is the more you can be you, and be uniquely and unapologetically you, then the better things will be. Just be yourself, because nobody else can be you, in the same way as you can. That's great, Sherry. We did touch on this earlier as well. Just be you. Don't worry about the competitors in your niche - don't worry about trying to make everyone like you. As a matter of fact, it's impossible to make everyone like you! Identify your passion, build your business, and let your personality shine through. YOU are what sets your business apart from your competition. Sarah Humes dives deeper into self-reflection with her advice. Although Sarah is relatively new to the business world, she has been doing the wife and mom thing for about 13 years now. She is married to her husband David, and they and their children, bravely entered the business world with a company called In-Courage Living. Their mission? To help people do brave things---every day! #10 Identify your core values - Sarah Humes I would truly encourage anybody getting into business - parents or not parents - to make sure you know what your core values are. Knowing what you stand for, and what you believe in. I think when you go to make big changes in your life, and I know for me my business was a huge change in lifestyle -  How to run my family, how to run my household - knowing what my core values are, they give me an anchor to come back to. Just the other day, I kind of had one of those moments where I felt like the household was kind of falling apart, learning how to run a household and a business is a lot of work- but, I had my core values to come back to. And I knew that I didn't want to yell at the people in my household, because kindness is a core value in our household. And I knew that I wanted to get my household back in order, because hospitality is one of our core values.  I have those core values to come back to you and knowing what they are just always is an anchor for me. They anchor my business, they anchor my family, and they anchor me personally. Once you know what your core values are they can help give you a mission statement in your business and in your family. And they have just helped propel me along, every step of the way. Knowing that about myself has just given me purpose and I think that that is just one of the the most important things you can do. I really like that - our family doesn't have identified core values, but it's officially a project on my to-do list! The past couple pieces of advice have really focused on being you, being unique, identifying your passions and values. And once you have identified where your strengths really lie, Cat Stancik has some advice for you. Cat is known for her tough love approach that gets clients into focused action so that they can get out of overwhelm and create big results with significantly less effort! She works with high achieving entrepreneurs who want to stop focusing on the glorified 6 and 7 figure marks, and finally enjoy a profitable, balanced business. Cat is the founder of Action Incubator™, a sought-after speaker, and Bestselling Author of 7 Principles for a More Productive and Fulfilling Life. Hey Cat, can you share your number one piece of advice with us? #11 You Don't Have to Do Everything - Cat Stancik You don't have to do everything in your business. I know that especially for new entrepreneurs, you know, at  any stage of the game this is true. You do not have to do everything in your business. You get focused on the things you need to do. Stay in your brilliance. And delegate the rest of that. So, I know that's like 3 different pieces of advice but they kind of link into each other, puzzle piece wise. Ultimately, you are not supposed to do everything in your business. Stay in your swim lane. Stay in your brilliance. That's where you enjoy playing. Do that! Don't concede and do stuff that you aren't great at doing. Have someone else who is great at doing it, do it! (Outsource and delegate) Yeah baby. As entrepreneurs, and as moms, we're always trying to do it all. But, it doesn't have to be that way. It shouldn't be that way. Much in the same way as we talked about finding a tribe and masterminding, it's okay to delegate tasks to others and even outsource elements of your business. This allows you to have better focus on the things you are best at - often times you can even outsource the things you just don't like doing - and that will help you be more efficient within your business. If you've been counting, you know that there is one piece of advice left, and it comes from Hannah B. King. Hannah is an off-beat, sunshine-&-sea-lovin' mama of two, an intuitive success mentor for creative entrepreneurial mamas, and a wild travelin' gypsy at heart. She has been an avid student of some of the best spiritual teachers, thought leaders, and intuitive healers around the world for the past 15 years. She is now on a mission, creating a movement of modern day mama's, collectively inspired on their journey of radical transformation and quantum growth, guiding them to create their dream desired lifestyle on their own terms. She spends her time tromping in waterfalls with her family or camping on the beaches on her island home of Maui, HI. Hey, Hannah, what is your number one piece of advice for our listeners? #12 Surrender & Grace - Hannah B. King I feel like there's one word that I have brought with me through my journey into becoming a mama. I had a very unusual entry into motherhood, than being pregnant, giving birth, becoming a mama, and then the role of parenthood, and then now raising my business. There's one word that has always been, I think, the ultimate saving grace and that is “surrender.” We want to hold on so tight to how we think something should go. And when we let go, and when we surrender and allow things to occur - even if it's the really sucky stuff, even if it's like, “I'm miserable.” Just surrender, and allow things to occur versus the tight grip on, “It's got to be just this way.”  This can apply to everything from pregnancy, birth, motherhood, business, all the things... money, relationships, everything. We have these ideas, and we want to feel like we're in control of how they how they go. And I just think, it's the one thing that I tell everybody, which is just let go and surrender, and let things occur, and see what unfolds for you. Is it always easy? Absolutely not. But, surrender is key - to anything - to any growth that we want in our lives. So, I would say that would be the biggest number 1… One more thing, which would be to give yourself grace, and to be kind to yourself. Whether you're raising a business and you're doing an entrepreneurial endeavor, or you're raising your family - it is big work. It is hard work. And it is beautiful magical work. But it is not going to be enjoyable if we are beating ourselves up. So, give yourself kindness and love and respect. And when you're struggling with that, imagine yourself as your as your children. Imagine how you love your children. You might want to scream at them, and shake them sometimes, because they're driving you crazy. But ultimately, then you just want to hug them, and you want to love them - and that's how we have to treat ourselves. It's like the little girl, or the little boy in us, they just need love. We just need love. So be willing to. You know when you're really wanting to beat yourself up, look at yourself as if you look at your children. It's just pure love. And that will get you through everything. Can I just say how amazing it has been to work with these 12 women to put not only this value-packed episode together, but to put together each of the first 13 episodes of the FamilyPreneur Podcast!
