In one day, your whole world could crumble and everything you treasure could be lost. That is exactly what happened to Anna Seewald in Armenia, where an earthquake resulted in overwhelming tragedy. Although she struggled through adversity, she found healing through community bonds. Her philosophy: together, we could overcome anything. The Other Side of Adversity Anna, growing up in Armenia, lived a peaceful and fulfilling childhood until her home town was hit with a catastrophic earthquake. The tragedy resulted in the loss of her mother, younger cousin, and many more friends and relatives. Anna had to move with other relatives in a foreign country, however, the experience allowed her to grow more resilient and empowering as she lives her life now in America. Overcoming her struggles, Anna became a parent counselor where she guides parents who’ve also been through trauma and abuse. She sees herself in them as they are on the same side of adversity. Anna did work with children at the beginning of her career. She believes that focusing on the parents and how they raise their children will result in a better home for both the parents and children. Anna credits her strength and resilience to the community she was in, relationships she bonded through, and the love she received as well as gave. She believes she is where she is at because of the unspoken bond of empathy. After the earthquake, and to this day, Anna processes her pain through the art of music, poetry, and writing. Listen to the episode for the full story. Resources Mentioned in the Show: Anna’s upcoming book still in the making, The Other Side of Adversity Stacy’s Journal Welcome to Stacy’s Journal! In this segment, I let you peek into my journal as I share my thoughts on a topic or resilience resource. Anna expressed just how valuable having her community with her through the hardship they were all experiencing. She credits her strength to the bonds and relationships she kept and created. That the emotional support and love that she gained was what enabled her to keep on pushing through. This insight really goes to show that if you are ever in a dark place, it is really helpful to put some effort in asking for help, reaching out to trust other people, and surrounding yourself with positivity. You are strong on your own, so imagine the strength you can muster with the support of more. There’s power in numbers. But it’s up to you to take rightful advantage of such opportunities. No matter what you’re going through, you’re never alone. Take a little bit of time in your day to reach out, you or that other person might really need it. That’s all we have for today. “Now I am trusting myself. I trust my decisions. I stand by my decisions. I know what’s best now and I speak up now.” Melissa Pierce didn’t succumb when tragedy struck, she persevered through the pain and transformed into a stronger person because of it. She learned to accept herself as the person she had become. She moved on to write a book and share her experiences with others. A Widow’s Tough Story Filled With Gold Melissa’s story starts when Melisa and David were a couple struggling with fertility in 2005 and they decided they wanted to adopt two little boys. In 2011 Melissa woke up and David did not. She had become a widow overnight. Melissa relayed her story of struggle, how she moved closer to her family and decided to get help. The first six months she felt like a zombie, but came to the conclusion that if she didn’t help herself she couldn’t help her kids, so she started her road to recovery. When a widow’s grief and stress showed up in her body, she took part in things that made her feel good: yoga, acupuncture, massage and exercise. Over a year later she found she was recovering but continues to have her moments to this day. Melissa learned to accept the person she has become after her husband’s death and has become stronger for it. Listen to the episode for the full story. I would like to encourage everyone suffering through grief to seek professional help. Don’t attempt to go through grieving a loss on your own, even if you don’t feel like you need it. There is often a stigma surrounding counseling and therapy, letting a stranger in is a daunting task however bouncing your feelings off someone and talking about what you’re feeling can really help you heal. For those who are grieving, or even just those who are in turmoil, find something you truly enjoy. Keep exploring until you find it. It took her years to finally be authentic because she was bogged down by self-doubt, by trying to please other people…by trying to just get by, and to move on as if nothing affected her. Stacy realized authenticity only by doing the inner work necessary. She started digging into her life stories. That’s what truly created her ability to CHANGE her life story – to become more authentic and free. Listen as Stacy shares her amazing spiritual journey with Dr. Joey!
Childhood sexual abuse leaves a lifelong scar. It is difficult for male survivors of sexual abuse to discuss the matter in public because of social stigma. So much so that many survivors keep on denying the reality. Cecil Murphey, speaker, blogger and author of books like ‘More than Surviving: Courageous Meditations for Men Hurting from Childhood Abuse’, helps survivors of male sexual abuse accept reality, share their pain with compassionate listeners, and believe in the fact that they are not alone in their suffering. Male Sexual Abuse Survivors Shatter the Silence I interviewed Cec Murphey who explained how writing helped him come to terms with his own past sexual abuse. Through his blogs, articles and books, he opens up about his own struggles. His blogs and books also include real life stories of survivors of male sexual abuse. Cec helps other survivors to share their trauma with compassionate readers. He wants them to accept reality, find help and move on. Survivors of sexual abuse, particularly men, find it more difficult to talk about their harrowing experiences. They have to overcome shame and break social taboos. Hence, many of them keep denying the facts and choose to suffer alone. Through his writings, Cec drives the fact that there are many survivors of male sexual abuse and if you’re one of them, you’re not alone. You can send emails to Cec and he will definitely send replies. You can also leave your comments on his blog site. If you prefer to keep your identity hidden, you can do so as well. https://www.facebook.com/MenShatteringTheSilence/ () Stacy’s Journal Welcome to Stacy’s Journal! In this segment, I let you peek into my journal as I share my thoughts on a topic or resilience resource. As I interviewed Cec, I couldn’t help but think, what would I have done if I remembered such abuse? What would you have done? Would you tell anyone or would you hide it and let it eat through you day-in-day-out. Cec actually experienced a mental breakdown and his memories started to haunt him. He couldn’t help it. Mustering his resilience, Cec decided to stand up against his fears. He did research, he investigated, and ultimately he helped himself, and he’s helped thousands of other abuse victims. I believe that this is the greatest achievement a person can aspire to. The ability to counter personal fears and use them as a lesson for your life. Perhaps take a moment to just peek at your own fears. You don’t have to delve head first into them right now, but acknowledging that they’re there is the first step. Then you can ultimately turn to face them, and conquer them. That’s all we have for today. Stacy Brookman found her superpower through writing. She discovered the genius of journaling after learning how to heal her own experiences of trauma by documenting her story. Now she helps others do the same. You won't want to miss the gems Stacy shares about learning how to discover your genius zone.
Sometimes I interview someone with a story so incredible that I'm in awe and Stacy is one of those. Being married to a sociopath, blaming herself, being removed from family and friends, moving often, living above her means, and how insidious this type of personality and abuse is was her life. Going from feeling like you're crazy, being afraid and then showered with love was a crazy life for over a decade - especially with children. Stacy fought back for herself and her kids and moved forward. Support this podcast
Super Power U: Mental Models and Tactical Skills To Activate Your Inner Superhero
Stacy Brookman is this week's Super Power U Podcast guest. Stacy affirms the belief that sharing our own story, and especially our trauma experiences, is therapeutic. She talks about boundaries and codependency, lessons learned from her past relationships, including with her narcissistic-sociopath ex-husband, as well as the antidote--the beautiful and cathartic nature of writing it down. The freedom and peace she gained from storytelling and freewriting has led her to helping others discover how to tell their own stories. Stacy's Real Life Resilience Podcast features stories of recovery from life's most difficult traumas and provides tools and resources for life-storytelling. Takeaways: In Stacy’s early adulthood, she felt introverted and took to writing in high school as a way to feel seen and heard, despite her shyness. She had dreams of becoming a doctor but got talked out of it and attended secretary school instead. Stacy had two examples of relationships that took her out of her values and boundaries and knew that she needed to make a change to be an example for her children. Early warning signs of recognizing a narcissist in a relationship: they “love bomb” you very quickly and they try to manipulate you into feeling sorry for them. Many times they try to make you feel as though you are the guilty or troubled one. In a lot of circumstances, staying loyal and sticking with something doesn’t serve anyone to the highest good. When you are codependent, you are more likely to move your boundary line to accommodate somebody else. Stacy found that the more she wrote down her thoughts, feelings, and memories about what she had been through, getting it all out made her feel calmer and helped pave a way for the steps she needed to take to move forward. She took an interest in learning about and teaching the art of live storytelling and the benefits it brought, including a lighter mood and benefits to the immune system. Stacy knew she wanted to teach as many as possible about writing and storytelling and created a monthly webinar — a website and podcast where she could connect with others frequently. Stacy’s four steps to begin even when you don’t know how: Embrace, Enable, Enhance, and Elevate your story. Then she digs in with her community on the milestones, desires, and conflicts within their lives, which starts to unravel deeper themes and fabrics that have been held and woven together. They also partake in freewriting exercises to get past the surface everyday thoughts and the golden nuggets of wisdom we all have inside of us. Now Stacy raises her hand to life, and to her own needs and desires. Mentioned in This Episode: Stacy Brookman Stacy Brookman Webinar Stacy Brookman Medium Podcast Recommendation of the Week: Storyical: Your Stories Are Your History Quotes “I chose someone else’s desire for me instead of my desire for myself. But in my head and my heart I knew there was something more inside of me.” “Sometimes it takes getting out for someone else, but then you see the light.” “I wanted people to hear how others overcome trauma in their life and see how great writing could be.” “My life theme was not raising my hand. For forty years. And I didn’t like that.” "I bounce back from adversity and help other people." We’ve dug into ‘WHAT’ is going on around us: things like: thoughts we have, feeling disconnected from ourselves, noticing the rules we’ve adopted. So today I want to dig even deeper, and start to unpack the ‘WHY’ – – so today’s episode is a bit different. We’re talking about Trauma. Trauma is derived from the Greek word for “wound,”. And unfortunately almost all of us have experienced some kind of wounding event: Something that hurt your feelings, made you feel minimized, or unsafe. And as you’d probably guess without learning healthy coping skills as children, we often carry these wounds with us into adulthood. They show up as things like anxiety, depression, addictions, perfectionism, eating disorders, OCD, alcoholism etc. All of course in varying degrees – think of it like a spectrum. From my experience there is always a ROOT [a deeper reason] why we do the things we do. Weather we know it or not – – underneath the beliefs & behaviors: we’re all just trying to feel a sense of belonging✨✨, acceptance, enoughness, okayness, safety, and security. We know this. We all have an innate desire to be seen, heard, valued, appreciated, and liked by others. 4% of our population are sociopaths, according to recent research. Like most of us, Stacy Brookman unwittingly fell in love with and married a charismatic man who appeared to be loving and caring; All that she ever wanted! He turned out to be one of the 4%... her ideal husband was a sociopath. She became a lifetime member of the Domestic Abuse Survivors Club. He could not keep a job, and that didn’t bother him. He suggested they move across the Country, and she went along. He insisted they purchase ever larger homes; he even bought horses. She struggled to pay the bills … he couldn’t keep a job … she went along. Sound familiar? It sure does to me! Listen to Stacy describe the hell that her husband created and how she made excuses for his behavior. She describes her embarrassment. She talks about feeling guilt and fear. He even bugged her car, her computer, her phone. Stacy has now created a safe, happy, and authentic life. After embracing personal growth, taking responsibility for her life, she attracted a real man. A man who loved her for who she was and supported her entrepreneurial ventures. A man with a tremendous sense of humor, who was not an abuser. Listen to Stacy Brookman’s evolution. She is honest, clear, specific and real. Anyone who has lived in abuse will empathize with her former life. And, admire the life she has created. A safe and healthy, authentic life can be created by any of us and Stacy is happy, living proof. Stacy’s podcast is called The Real Life Resilience. She writes and teaches writing; Learn more at www.StacyBrookman.com She even offers a free writing webinar on her web site! Stacy’s favorite poem is Veronica Shoffstall’s After A While. Read it here https://nerro.wordpress.com/2007/05/06/after-a-while-veronica-a-shoffstall/ It speaks to me as a survivor. I bet it will speak to you, too.
What I love about people's stories is their stories are typically overcoming, you don't really hear about stories very much about people not overcoming obstacles or a lot of failing and that's what I love to help people see is that they're failures and I love hearing stories about failures because then we can turn them into success stories, we can turn them into where people can live joy filled lives and that's a thrill for me. I love listening to people's stories because I mean we're all humans and we have that need for connection and our brains are wired for story you know that's how we connect. So I love it, story is everywhere you see. For full episode click here
We’re talking about resilience and our guest may be the last person you’d expect to talk about the topic. Stacy Brookman was married to and divorced from a sociopath. A lot of people call their exes sociopaths, but this is the real deal. Stacy talks about the harrowing experiences of that marriage and about how writing saved her life. Writing your way to resilience on Keep it Juicy!
Today, we are talking to Stacy Brookman, she teaches people how to write their life stories and get over all of the labels that we put on ourselves and that others put on us. Our own lives are also a narrative, but we are often so busy recovering from the trial, or preparing for the next one, that we don't take stock of what we have learned about ourselves, and then we can't take that knowledge and appy it to being wiser, braver or stronger. But we could. And we should. Because otherwise we just go around being the weaker, more scared, and not so smart versions of ourselves. And wouldn't you rather feel like the heroine of your story instead? In this episode, I talk with Stacy Brookman, who teaches a writing method called Life Storytelling. Stacy uses this method with people who have experienced some kind of trauma in their life, and helps them to write their way through their experience togain some perspective and insight. Stacy shares how she came to this work after experiecing the power of the process herself. She uncovered a life-long pattern in her life through the writing process, and was able to change it, and as a result, change everything in her life. Stacy Brookman is a Resilience and Life Storytelling Expert and produces the Real Life Resilience podcast. Her mission is to tell stories of recovery from life's most difficult trauma and provide tools for resiliency for kids and adults. Her free webinar will give you 4 Simple, Proven Methods to Writing the First Chapter of Your Life Story in Just 7 Days. Life is a story…it's never too late to start telling yours. Right-click here to download the episode to your computer! The Notes Stacy has always been interested in books and writing, and during a very difficult time in her life - when she was amid a very traumatic divorce from a sociopath - she took a memoir writing class. Writing her feelings and experiences was calming and therapeutic for her. It inspired her to study the therapeutic effect of writing and then paved the path for her current passions, helping other people experience the same benefits from writing their life stories. She shared some surprising stories of the experiences she encountered when her ex-husband cut the heat lines to her home during a frigid NY winter, called Child Protective Services on her, and even bugged her vehicle. Life Storytelling allowed Stacy to take these crazy things that had happened to her and turn it into a way for her to help other people. Growing up, Stacy's parents were pretty intent on her finding a traditional steady job. This was in the 80s, when entrepreneurialism was not as accepted as it is today. Now that she's an adult, her parents are very supportive. [bctt tweet="“Start small and make a lot of mistakes!” ~ Stacy Brookman, FamilyPreneur Podcast Episode #6" username="TheMegBrunson"] Being a single mom, and working a corporate job that was an hour commute each way, Stacy had no choice but to give her children added responsibilities like getting themselves on and off the school bus and chores around the house. She admits that the mom guilt was strong, but she also knows that her daughters are preparing themselves for the real world. Stacy describes the experience of having her oldest daughter travel to Japan alone for over a month. Her daughter was always interested in Japan and even taught herself the language. While she's unsure what she wants to pursue in life, her passions right now are taking her around the world and Stacy describes some of the entrepreneurial lessons she is learning as a result of those journeys. [bctt tweet="“Kids should fail often, fail early, and fail well” ~ Stacy Brookman, FamilyPreneur Podcast Episode #6 " username="TheMegBrunson"] When it comes to tricks and tips, Stacy recommends being organized, and delegating tasks whenever possible. Stacy believes that life storytelling is a healing process that employs the very language we use to construct meaning and purpose in our everyday lives. With words it’s powerful beyond measure because when you truly start to understand how these words and stories affect the way we think and act, you suddenly have the tools to change your life. You become more resilient. She loves to help people discover and tell their life stories because it provides them with insight and courage to finally make progress. It took her years to finally be authentic because she was bogged down by self-doubt, trying to please other people, trying to just get by, and to move on as if nothing affected her. She started digging into what her life stories were and that’s what truly created her ability to change her life story – to become more authentic and free to be who she was meant to be. http://www.stacybrookman.com/ StoryHinge http://storyhinge.com Where we amplify personal stories to consider more possibility and realize more potential and happiness in life.
There's no such thing as a Mission Impossible to Cat Stancik, who is known for her tough love approach that gets clients into focused action so that they can get out of overwhelm and create big results with significantly less effort! She works with high achieving entrepreneurs who want to stop focusing on the glorified 6 and 7 figure marks, and finally enjoy a profitable, balanced business. Cat does this by leveraging her proprietary system, to simplify, strategize and systematize to an entirely new level. Cat is the founder of Action Incubator™, a sought-after speaker, and Bestselling Author of 7 Principles for a More Productive and Fulfilling Life. As a self-proclaimed “Education Junkie” who genuinely cares about honing her coaching skills to get her clients better and bigger results, getting an MBA wasn't enough for Cat Stancik. She's also certified by The Coaches Training Institute, the Project Management Institute, and the Leadership Circle Profile 360 Assessment. She is also a long-time member of the International Coaching Federation, where she holds her ACC. She lives in Maryland with her two daughters and her adoring husband, who showers her with chocolate and massages (if he knows what's good for him). Right-click here to download the episode to your computer! The Notes During Cat's second pregnancy her husband made the decision to quit a “toxic” job in order to pursue his own entrepreneurial dreams. When Cat went into labor a month sooner than she expected, it threw them for a financial loop. She describes how their family managed welcoming their second baby, and she still managed to take a maternity leave from her own business, all while losing her husband's steady paycheck. Much of their balance comes from Cat's talent at simplifying steps and putting plans in place to enable her to be lazy later. [bctt tweet="“Put effort into being lazy” ~ Cat Stancik, FamilyPreneur Podcast Episode #5 " username="TheMegBrunson"] The Action Incubator is Cat's business and it's all about actions leading to profits. She helps entrepreneurs take focused action towards reaching their goals. We discuss the difference between revenues and profits. Revenue is how much your business is creating, whereas profits are how much you are actually paying yourself. A lot of it has to do with how you are investing and what you are spending your money on. She has saved clients up to $56,000/year by evaluating the way clients invest. [bctt tweet="“The secret in my sauce is accountability and tough love.” ~ Cat Stancik, FamilyPreneur Podcast Episode #5 " username="TheMegBrunson"] Cat recommends setting quarterly goals (as opposed to annual goals) and recommends that each quarter has one goal, one strategy, and one metric to measure that by. 90 days is just the right amount of time to make it feel possible, and give you enough pressure to put you into action. The goal should be uncomfortable enough that you want to work towards it, and work hard at it - but also within the realm of possibilities. [bctt tweet="“Failing is part of success…. It's not how you fail, it's how you get back up” ~ Cat Stancik, FamilyPreneur Podcast Episode #5 " username="TheMegBrunson"] Most of the information that you need to increase your profits is out there - but working with a coach provides accountability and helps you reach your goals faster. Her Branding is on point. Cat incorporates her personality and a love of movies into her brand and website. It's fun, unique, personal, and amazingly well done. As she says in the interview: even if you have no interest in working with her, you should totally check it out! Any bonafide writer calls themselves a writer because they write. There’s really no other way of describing a writer than that. All you need to do to call yourself a writer is pick up the pen and begin to write. Highlights from the interview: Luis’ mother died when he was five and he was homeless for three years after that before being adopted into the United States Luis found trouble: expelled from middle school, smoking pot, getting into trouble. However, he discovered poetry when a teacher saw his potential and gave him a book of poetry by Pablo Neruda titled “The Captain’s Verses”. He went on to help with and then winning many poetry slam competitions. Now Luis is a successful entrepreneur (thrivinglaunch.com) Luis’ idea of a writer is anyone that writes. There’s really no other way of describing a writer. He coaches writers to just pick up the pen and write. Just showing up is the first piece. The next piece is to show up and share what you’ve written with other people. After that, then you can read other great writers and get to know them, try to emulate to some degree or discover what you can pick up from them to add to your own writing technique. If you’re doing these things, without a doubt, even without anyone’s help, you will become an amazing writer. Listen to the episode for the full story. http://stacybrookman.com/webinar1 () Stacy’s Journal Welcome to Stacy’s Journal! In this segment, I let you peek into my journal as I share my thoughts on a topic or resilience resource. I loved Luis’s background in oral storytelling and poetry slams. Sharing your story out loud can not only be empowering, but it can really move other people who hear it. It’s a unique way of sharing your experiences because storytelling is among the oldest forms of entertainment. It even dates back to 10th century Japan. Before you go all prickly at the thought of speaking in front of a group, consider going smaller at first, by joining a local story circle where everyone shares their stories. Or even simply reading aloud to a friend. The act of receiving someone’s story is a gift that people want to give you. By sharing your story aloud, you enable others to hear your story, acknowledge your struggles and your triumphs, and connect with you through your story. You can google writing circles or even live storytelling near your city. That’s all we have for today. Last episode, Mike Veny shared his thoughts on struggling with suicide attempts and mental health – so if you need if you know of anyone who might resonate with that topic, you might want to go back and have a listen. Not only do you have the tools to pursue, but you also have the tools to promote. Angela hit the nail on the head. Technology has made it easier than ever to monetize our passions. I'm in my office right now and I wanted this to be filled with inspirational and like happy thoughts. One of the phrases that I have been hearing from Dana Malstaff - it comes up in like all of her stuff on her Podcast and her group, and the Boss Mom retreat I went to. It's this idea of “done not perfect.” So if you're starting out and you are launching your freelance business - whatever services you are going to offer - just start! Get it out there. You don't have to have a website. You don't have to have a business Page. You just have to kind of have that clarity of what you're offering, and start telling people. That's great advice, Micala. It's easy to get overwhelmed with all of the things we think we need to do before we launch a business. But it's important to remember that you don't need to be perfect right out of the gate. You should not compare yourself to businesses who have been established for years. Everyone has to start somewhere and you dont need all the things right out out the gate. Focus on one thing at a time, and allow yourself to grow from there. Stacy Brookman has a great piece of advice to add. Stacy Brookman is a Resilience and Life Storytelling Expert and produces the Real Life Resilience podcast. Her mission is to tell stories of recovery from life's most difficult trauma and provide tools for resiliency for kids and adults. Hi Stacy, what is your top piece of advice? #3 - Start Small - Stacy Brookman Start small. You don't have to quit your job. I haven't yet quit my corporate job. I'm hoping to this next upcoming year. But you know, just go ahead and start. Start small. Make a lot of mistakes. That's okay. Make the mistakes when you're small. Like, I've tried to do some Facebook Lives and YouTube Lives and it took me a while before... Took me a lot of people are saying “There's no sound!” (Oh no!) It took me a while before I got the right formula. But you do it, and do it when you're small, and you can find that time. I take a lunch. You know, a lot of people in the corporate world don't take lunches. They just work right through it. That's my time I'm going to take it. I am going to step away from my desk. I'm going to work on my business. I think that's what everybody can and should do, because the way the economy is going is that there are more freelancers, more entrepreneurs, and you're giving yourself a boost for the future. Great addition, Stacy. Mistakes and even “failures” are essential steps to success. We have to make those mistakes in order to learn and improve. As moms it can also be hard to make time for ourselves, but I love how you found a way to carve time out of your lunch break - to work on your business a little bit each day. A “side hustle” can not only provide a great escape away from the mundane corporate world - a way to pursue our passions and it sparks the possibility for financial freedom. Susie Parker is our next guest - and she also works a corporate job alongside managing her successful business. Susie is a certified Sleep Consultant and founder of Sleep Baby Love, Child Sleep Consulting. She is a “been there done that” mom of two beautiful girls who have had her deal with many sleep challenges head on. Through personalized consulting and online courses, Susie helps many exhausted families teach their babies, toddlers and preschoolers to LOVE sleep. Welcome Susie, what is your number 1 piece of advice for parents pursuing entrepreneurship? #4 - It ain't easy. But it's worth it. - Susie Parker It ain't easy, but it's worth it! So, I found a business that I actually created where I was able to start with a lower investment. I mean I didn't have to create a product or anything. I had a website and I was able to through word of mouth get my first client, so that was a pretty good opportunity. If you can find something like that, without spending a ton of investment into branding or courses, at that point, just start your business. And then once you have clients and you have money coming in, figure out where you want to invest it. Getting rich happens for a lot of people, but it doesn't happen for everyone. I think these, “make a million dollars in a year,” you'd have to have a really premium price service, and if you're selling to your mom, I don't know necessarily that that's always the best service. So, you have to really figure out where you want to go, and don't get jealous of other people's success. Yes, it's definitely worth it! There are many many entrepreneurs who work a full time job while they are building the foundations of their “side hustle.” Starting a business with as little of an investment as possible is great advice, and then once you start making money you can reinvest that into expanding and growing your business. I also love that you mentioned not getting jealous of other people's success. Focus on improving yourself continuously, and draw inspiration from others, but know that people will follow you for being you. Next, let's hear from Vicki DeLuzio. Vicki echos some of Susie's advice, and adds her own perspective to it. Vicki is a blogging and homeschooling mom of 3 living in Surprise, Arizona (a suburb of Phoenix). Her and her husband are both entrepreneurs and she often and actively involves her children in her business. Hi Vicki, thanks for joining us! What's your best advice for someone thinking of starting their own business? #5 Make Financial Plans - Vicki DeLuzio You definitely have to know that you're not going to make money right off the bat, unless you have an incredible amazing idea, the percentage of that actually happening is so low. I mean, watch Shark Tank for instance. The people who are on Shark Tank, they have struggled for years and years, and they don't live the high life. So, realize that whatever you're starting out with, it's not going to go from zero to 60. You need to be prepared with both... especially health insurance. Look up your options for that, have savings. Have a plan in place, and know that you might have to work part time, or someone might have to work part time just make ends meet. Don't go into severe debt, because it's a hard hole to climb out of. And the stress of debt can be horrible on a family. Make sure you have a plan in place. Make sure you have a savings set aside. That would be my advice. As I mentioned before, There are many many entrepreneurs who start their businesses alongside a full time job, which allows them to maintain the perks and benefits of full-time employment - like health insurance. Some people hope to leave their corporate jobs some day, while others are content with balancing both on a more long-term basis. In either situation, self-employment provides a safety net in case something out of your control happens with your corporate job. Next, I'd like to welcome Kiki to the show. Kiki is my 10-year-old daughter, who you met in episode #1, and I'd like to remind you about the advice she indicated she'd give to her little sister, who recently indicated an interest in starting her own business. Hi Kiki, what advice would you offer your sister - or any of your friends - if they told you that they wanted to start their own business? #6 Mentoring and Coaching - Kiki I would start telling them about my business and how my business works. And we can work a little on both of our businesses together. So I can help her and teach her most of the stuff. I think that will be pretty helpful. Like me telling her like if you want a website maybe you should do this or that. I think I can pretty much help people by doing that. So…it sounds like what you would do if your sister or a friend wanted to start a business is try to figure out a way that you could work together. So like teamwork and help them figure things out along the way so it's you know it's almost like you'd want to be a coach to them kind of like I've been a business coach to you is that right? Yeah. So you think that you would just like to be a friend and help them through their questions and their problems in the best ways that you can. Yeah I want to try and help them so, yeah. What happens if you don't know an answer than you do? Maybe I would ask my business coach since she knows a lot more than me. Kiki is really onto something - she understands, even at a young age, that it takes a village. She's able to identify that she needs help and support from other, more experienced business owners in order to grow her business - and that she can extend her knowledge and expertise to entrepreneurs who are not quite where she is yet. It's this concept of building a tribe, or forming a mastermind group, that Lisa Betts-LaCroix also explores with us. Lisa is a speaker, actor, dancer and host of the Super Power U podcast. She speaks on the future of Education, has been featured in over 100 film and television roles and, though she began dancing late in life, she holds a World Title in Pro-Am American Rhythm Ballroom Dance. Lisa's parents were both entrepreneurs, she married an entrepreneurial husband, and her experiences with education and entrepreneurship have influenced her approach on homeschooling her children. Hi Lisa, what is your number one piece of advice for entrepreneurs? #7 We need a tribe - Lisa Betts-LaCroix We need a tribe. We need connections. We need support. And one of the things I noticed in our current life is that people often feel isolated. I have the belief that it is - if you feel isolated - it is on you. It is a possibility for you and the tools are in place for you to go out and create a community for yourself. The key thing I'd say about building community and making connections with people is that it's possible for everyone to do. And the key thing is to look at what you need and what kind of support you want. If you can scratch your own itch and meet your own need, and then bring other people into that, you probably will be both contributing greatly to people in ways that they will appreciate, and at the same time you'll synergistically be building a support network that you need for yourself. It's definitely easy to feel isolated both as a parent and as an entrepreneur. While I think in-person networking and support networks are really important, it's also important to keep in mind that technology makes it totally possible to find virtual support as well. Having a “tribe” or forming a mastermind group with other entrepreneurs who are at a similar place in their business is a great way to collaborate and find success together. Monique Parker is an academic life coach, author, and public speaker. She empowers and equips teens and young adults to experience success in school and in life, while preparing them for adulthood. Monique shares her number one piece of advice, both for parents and for teens and young adults… Welcome Monique, what advice do you have for exploring entrepreneurship? #8 Think outside of the box- Monique Parker So I am going to give two-fold because you know my heart is for the young people. That's good, give us two answers: parent-perspective and kiddo-perspective. Parent perspective would be to remember that your child is a little person. These are people that you are developing. As a parent entrepreneur, just like you would spend so much time in building your business, is your responsibility - and should be your duty, your choice, your love, and your passion to build up your young people to be a responsible adult. (I love that) For teens and young adults, I would say to walk to your own beat, do not feel like you have to be like everybody else. Give yourself grace. Give yourself love for yourself, to realize that you were innately born with special gifts to help the world. Help the masses, which in turn will benefit you and bless you. So I would say to you, as young people, to find your path, find it early, and shine brightly in that area. And do it because you want to do it, and because you love to do it, and because you love yourself enough that you want to be the best that you can be. Don't feel like you have to be in the box - Parents and teens - they don't have to be doctors and don't have to be lawyers. Find what your child is naturally gifted at and help them make a business off of that, and thrive off of that. I love Monique's perspective. Whether you have yourself or your child in mind… We all have special gifts, and those translate into marketable skills. Our paths are all going to look different because they all are beginning and ending in different places. And it's important to remember that there is no need to follow someone else's path. Even success looks differently to different people. And Sherry Bevan agrees. Sherry is a former Global Head of IT Service in an international law firm, she now runs The Confident Mother, an independent coaching practice. Sherry has been running her own business since 2012 and works as an author, coach and speaker. She specialises in helping ambitious women get clear on what they really want, then find the confidence to take action and move forward in their career or business. Hi Sherry, what is the best advice you have for parent entrepreneurs? #9 Be You - Sherry Bevan Oh, I think my number one piece of advice is the more you can be you, and be uniquely and unapologetically you, then the better things will be. Just be yourself, because nobody else can be you, in the same way as you can. That's great, Sherry. We did touch on this earlier as well. Just be you. Don't worry about the competitors in your niche - don't worry about trying to make everyone like you. As a matter of fact, it's impossible to make everyone like you! Identify your passion, build your business, and let your personality shine through. YOU are what sets your business apart from your competition. Sarah Humes dives deeper into self-reflection with her advice. Although Sarah is relatively new to the business world, she has been doing the wife and mom thing for about 13 years now. She is married to her husband David, and they and their children, bravely entered the business world with a company called In-Courage Living. Their mission? To help people do brave things---every day! #10 Identify your core values - Sarah Humes I would truly encourage anybody getting into business - parents or not parents - to make sure you know what your core values are. Knowing what you stand for, and what you believe in. I think when you go to make big changes in your life, and I know for me my business was a huge change in lifestyle - How to run my family, how to run my household - knowing what my core values are, they give me an anchor to come back to. Just the other day, I kind of had one of those moments where I felt like the household was kind of falling apart, learning how to run a household and a business is a lot of work- but, I had my core values to come back to. And I knew that I didn't want to yell at the people in my household, because kindness is a core value in our household. And I knew that I wanted to get my household back in order, because hospitality is one of our core values. I have those core values to come back to you and knowing what they are just always is an anchor for me. They anchor my business, they anchor my family, and they anchor me personally. Once you know what your core values are they can help give you a mission statement in your business and in your family. And they have just helped propel me along, every step of the way. Knowing that about myself has just given me purpose and I think that that is just one of the the most important things you can do. I really like that - our family doesn't have identified core values, but it's officially a project on my to-do list! The past couple pieces of advice have really focused on being you, being unique, identifying your passions and values. And once you have identified where your strengths really lie, Cat Stancik has some advice for you. Cat is known for her tough love approach that gets clients into focused action so that they can get out of overwhelm and create big results with significantly less effort! She works with high achieving entrepreneurs who want to stop focusing on the glorified 6 and 7 figure marks, and finally enjoy a profitable, balanced business. Cat is the founder of Action Incubator™, a sought-after speaker, and Bestselling Author of 7 Principles for a More Productive and Fulfilling Life. Hey Cat, can you share your number one piece of advice with us? #11 You Don't Have to Do Everything - Cat Stancik You don't have to do everything in your business. I know that especially for new entrepreneurs, you know, at any stage of the game this is true. You do not have to do everything in your business. You get focused on the things you need to do. Stay in your brilliance. And delegate the rest of that. So, I know that's like 3 different pieces of advice but they kind of link into each other, puzzle piece wise. Ultimately, you are not supposed to do everything in your business. Stay in your swim lane. Stay in your brilliance. That's where you enjoy playing. Do that! Don't concede and do stuff that you aren't great at doing. Have someone else who is great at doing it, do it! (Outsource and delegate) Yeah baby. As entrepreneurs, and as moms, we're always trying to do it all. But, it doesn't have to be that way. It shouldn't be that way. Much in the same way as we talked about finding a tribe and masterminding, it's okay to delegate tasks to others and even outsource elements of your business. This allows you to have better focus on the things you are best at - often times you can even outsource the things you just don't like doing - and that will help you be more efficient within your business. If you've been counting, you know that there is one piece of advice left, and it comes from Hannah B. King. Hannah is an off-beat, sunshine-&-sea-lovin' mama of two, an intuitive success mentor for creative entrepreneurial mamas, and a wild travelin' gypsy at heart. She has been an avid student of some of the best spiritual teachers, thought leaders, and intuitive healers around the world for the past 15 years. She is now on a mission, creating a movement of modern day mama's, collectively inspired on their journey of radical transformation and quantum growth, guiding them to create their dream desired lifestyle on their own terms. She spends her time tromping in waterfalls with her family or camping on the beaches on her island home of Maui, HI. Hey, Hannah, what is your number one piece of advice for our listeners? #12 Surrender & Grace - Hannah B. King I feel like there's one word that I have brought with me through my journey into becoming a mama. I had a very unusual entry into motherhood, than being pregnant, giving birth, becoming a mama, and then the role of parenthood, and then now raising my business. There's one word that has always been, I think, the ultimate saving grace and that is “surrender.” We want to hold on so tight to how we think something should go. And when we let go, and when we surrender and allow things to occur - even if it's the really sucky stuff, even if it's like, “I'm miserable.” Just surrender, and allow things to occur versus the tight grip on, “It's got to be just this way.” This can apply to everything from pregnancy, birth, motherhood, business, all the things... money, relationships, everything. We have these ideas, and we want to feel like we're in control of how they how they go. And I just think, it's the one thing that I tell everybody, which is just let go and surrender, and let things occur, and see what unfolds for you. Is it always easy? Absolutely not. But, surrender is key - to anything - to any growth that we want in our lives. So, I would say that would be the biggest number 1… One more thing, which would be to give yourself grace, and to be kind to yourself. Whether you're raising a business and you're doing an entrepreneurial endeavor, or you're raising your family - it is big work. It is hard work. And it is beautiful magical work. But it is not going to be enjoyable if we are beating ourselves up. So, give yourself kindness and love and respect. And when you're struggling with that, imagine yourself as your as your children. Imagine how you love your children. You might want to scream at them, and shake them sometimes, because they're driving you crazy. But ultimately, then you just want to hug them, and you want to love them - and that's how we have to treat ourselves. It's like the little girl, or the little boy in us, they just need love. We just need love. So be willing to. You know when you're really wanting to beat yourself up, look at yourself as if you look at your children. It's just pure love. And that will get you through everything. First, I'd like to introduce Angela Ferrari. Angela Ferrari is an artist, children's book author and illustrator based in Portland Maine. She is the creator and host of the Story Spectacular podcast. Angela grew up in the mountains of western Maine. Living in a rural setting, she developed a talent for finding creative ways to play and captivate her imagination. She has since expanded her artistic endeavors, writing and illustrating three children's books. Most recently Angela has launched Story Spectacular, a children's story podcast featuring original stories and classic retellings. #1 - Just go for it! - Angela Ferrari I would say that whatever you have inside you, whatever story you have to tell or creative venture you have, just go for it. I mean there's no excuse nowadays with all of the advantages we have with technology. You can not only, you know, write a book or make your own website. Not only do you have the tools to pursue, but you also have the tools to promote. Angela hit the nail on the head. Technology has made it easier than ever to monetize our passions. With the internet, we can create our storefront via a website, leverage social media for affordable marketing solutions, and research just about any question we have. Now, let's hear from Micala. Micala Quinn is a wife, mom, teacher, lifelong learner and founder of The Live Free Mama Movement. She helps moms launch their freelance business using the skills they already have so that they can have more freedom, flexibility, and financial stability to be the mom they want to be! Hi Micala, what advice do you have for new entrepreneurs? #2 - Done, Not Perfect - Micala Quinn Just one thing, and this is something that I follow and it's actually up on my wall. I'm in my office right now and I wanted this to be filled with inspirational and like happy thoughts. One of the phrases that I have been hearing from Dana Malstaff - it comes up in like all of her stuff on her Podcast and her group, and the Boss Mom retreat I went to. Do you have enough adversity in your life to have an adversity bio? Sharon Roth-Lichtenfeld does! This founder of Good Grief Coaching has survived hardship and heartache amazingly well. Listen to the episode to discover how she finds peace and joy in the midst of very tough circumstances. Good Grief in Adversity Highlights from the interview: A lot of research has proven that you are not born resilient. It’s a skillset that every individual has inside of them and can cultivate it at any given moment. Resilience: the skill to see things from a different point of view and recognize that inside of them they can create peace and joy no matter what happens in their life. Adversity will happen, you won’t get away from the pain, but you can go through it faster and come out the other side stronger, wiser, and meaning. We have to recognize the peace and joy that show up in the world, even in the midst of adversity and while we’re having pain. Often we see so many happy people around us, but we’re going through the pain. It’s hard for us. You may not get to happy, but you can get to peace. The goal is to get to moments of peace or seconds of peace with the goal of stretching those into longer moments. Sharon has an http://www.goodgriefcoaching.com/adversity-biography/ (adversity bio on her website). She’s had a lot to recover from. The old Sharon would push feelings aside and ignore them. Over the years she’s learned to express her feelings and allow herself to feel the pain. Everything that happens you can make something meaningful and greater and better than it is. You’re OK to have your emotions. Record your emotions, speak them and listen to them back. It’s important to express how you’re thinking and feeling It’s also important to be grateful. And be very specific. There’s ALWAYS something to be grateful for. The practice of gratitude helps train your brain to see what you do have. In this segment, I let you peek into my journal as I share my thoughts on a topic or resilience resource. Sharon explained that you can look for joy and peace even in the midst of adversity. So many times in our lives we have to actively LOOK for joy and recognize things to celebrate. It seems counterintuitive almost. Something sad, bad, or awful has happened, but in addition to feeling those feelings you also look for joy. I don’t want to discount having feelings of sadness because those are valid and important to acknowledge and feel. But holding that alongside the search for tiny bits of joy can help you get through a tough time. Part of finding joy is being present during our days. Presence is a gift. Thinking about the past leads to regret. Thoughts of the future lead to anxiety. Keep your mind in the present if you want to experience happiness on a regular basis. Find the tiniest amount of joy that’s around you. That’s all we have for today. Last episode, http://stacybrookman.com/petershankman (Peter Shankman, whose brain runs faster than normal), shared his insight into why the ADHD brain is a gift, so if you have someone with ADHD in your life, you might want to go back and have a listen. We are storied people. Rachael Anne Clinton helps us understand why discovering the stories that have shaped our past benefits our present and future. Find out why she believes everyone has known some heartache, but why you can’t enter the trauma olympics. Listen to her fascinating story… Your Storied Past Does Inform Your Present and Future Highlights from the interview: We all need witnesses to our stories, especially formative stories where we’ve known heartache and harm. When we’re young, we don’t have the capacity to see the whole picture. When other people read our stories with us, they help us see the story more fully and accurately because we make a lot of assumptions about ourselves and what happened based on our younger self and our body’s desire to survive. Often we develop shame and judgment around what has happened and we interpret it to be our fault if we don’t tell our stories. We are storied people. That’s why she invites people to start to tell their stories and discover the stories that have shaped who you are. It’s important to know that in some ways no family is perfect so there will always be some absence of love in places that we need it. It involves heartbreak and loss. Trauma is a distressing or threatening event that gives your body an experience of threat. A child who observes domestic violence will experience the same traumatic response as a child who has domestic violence directed at them. Being in the presence of terror activates the limbic system. Is losing a family pet as traumatic as refugee families fleeing for their lives? There is no trauma olympics. In this segment, I let you peek into my journal as I share my thoughts on a topic or resilience resource. Rachael and I touched on a side topic of finding a good therapist or counselor. So many people feel they must be in crisis to go to a therapist or they think only “other” people do so. I’d like to propose a different way of looking at this. A counselor or therapist is a fantastic brainstorming partner. They are a neutral person, someone who doesn’t judge you for your thoughts and feelings in any way. And they don’t have authority over you, so you don’t have to enter into the conversation as a weaker party. If you approach a therapist as a great person to bounce ideas off of, a partner to collaborate with you, and as someone to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with to take a keen eye to life’s issues, then you will gain tremendous insights and make the most of your connection. Psychology today is a great resource for finding just the right fit. And like Rachael said, start by having an introductory conversation with several to see who you click with. If you find a great counselor, please drop me a line and let me know your favorite way to work with that professional. According to Dr. Dan Allender, we all need to look at those trauma stories we’ve written off as already resolved and say “What more am I to learn and how can I engage these stories with kindness?” Realizing and Recovering from Trauma and Shame Highlights from the interview: The Allender Center of Abuse and Trauma addresses the heartbreaking reality that nobody goes through life without some level of violation and assault. At some point in our lives, we will all know some violation of our dignity and honor through abuse. Can one recover from trauma and turn their life into a thing of beauty? Absolutely, Jesus turns ashes into beauty. There is the probability, if we’re engaging the story, to enter into that story without despair. Trauma is when our world comes into upheaval and there is no quick way to restore it. Time does NOT heal all wounds. Trauma is living in a fallen world. Abuse is the experience of some form of violation and injustice in the midst of that trauma. When you combine the two….no one escapes trauma, most people don’t escape abuse. Those issues must be addressed forthrightly, naming what occurred, who brought about the harm, what did you experience, what did your brain do then and now. The byproduct of not addressing it is a lack of wholeness and therefore a lack of joy. When you experience trauma, the portion of the brain that regulates speech goes offline, which is why we often have no memory of what happened and/or we get numb. We must do good things for our fragmented selves. How do you care for the broken part of you? In this segment, I let you peek into my journal as I share my thoughts on a topic or resilience resource. Today I want to talk about naming our hurt. Naming what has happened to us. Dr. Allender touched on this in our interview. Often, we don’t have names for the trauma and shame that has occurred in our lives. Sometimes because we have buried the events and the memories, sometimes because we’ve denied what happened to us, and sometimes because people have told us to get over it or we try to minimize the damage. But as we carefully step into our hurts and write about them, we start to find specific words and language for what happened. The interesting thing is, as soon as you find words to describe your trauma, it starts to lose its grip on you. It separates you from that emotional pain and puts you in better control of your own story. That is the first step to healing. I encourage you to name your trauma, name your shame, name your heartache, disappointments, and devastations. Take that first step to free yourself from their entanglements. Often, it’s from events that are out of your control, like Radney’s ex-wife taking their son to France. Radney knew that anger and hatred would destroy him and he had to dig deep to figure out how to forgive the wrong. We’ve all experienced injustices – both large and small. In addition to therapy, which is incredibly helpful, prayer and meditation provided Radney with the means to get through his emotions. This is similar to last week’s guest, Ed Cyzewski, who has written about contemplative prayer. Doing the inner and outer work necessary to bring peace will help you overcome anger. Science backs the benefits of meditation too. Studies have shown that brain signaling during meditation increases in the left side of the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for positive emotions, while activity decreases in the right side, responsible for negative emotions. Both writing and the Christian tradition of contemplative prayer depend on us facing our fears and anxieties, and the path to healing is about going through our pain rather than numbing it or distracting ourselves from it. What does contemplation have to do with it? Ed has long struggled with anxiety from his parent’s contentious divorce and from various incidents that involved them during his high school years. Writing and prayer have served as vital outlets that have enabled him to become more aware of his anxiety, its sources, and the potential solutions. Contemplation helps us become present in the moment so that we can receive God’s love, while writing demands that we stay in the present moment in order to fully see and process our stories or ideas. Writing helps refine ideas so that you can better pray with eyes wide open. In addition, the quiet and stillness of contemplative prayer often uncovers hidden places in your life that need to be explored further in through writing. In this segment, I let you peek into my journal as I share my thoughts on a topic or resilience resource. I really liked Ed’s take on healing. He believes that the path to healing is about going through our pain rather than numbing it or distracting ourselves from it. Contemplation helps us become present in the moment and that, in turn, helps us discover places that need to be explored further in writing. There are so many times we try to gloss over our hurts, or past difficulties. We just try to get through them and then ignore them. Or squeeze those tough times into a small place at the back of our mind and just hope that they don’t pop back out. But, when we do that, we aren’t truly recovering from those times. We aren’t resolving that conflict, we’re ignoring it. It hurts us in ways we don’t even realize. Research has proven that pulling that pain out, and the simple act of writing about your feelings, even a short amount, is incredibly beneficial. We know that it even boosts your immune system! I encourage you to try it out. Think back to a tough time in your life, or a time when someone hurt you, and write about your feelings. In other words, lean in to get through. That’s all we have for today. Last episode, Evan Hanson discussed the two journeys to manhood – so if you’re raising boys, or know someone who is, you might want to go back and have a listen. Becoming a “man” isn’t a new idea – there are centuries of precedence. But it’s been pretty much forgotten – especially in terms of some sort of ceremony, some sort of moment. Developing Manhood From Boyhood Highlights from the interview: When does a boy become a man? If you’re a man and you’re reading this, there probably isn’t one moment you can pinpoint. Becoming a “man” isn’t a new idea – there are centuries of precedence. But it’s been pretty much forgotten – especially in terms of some sort of ceremony, some sort of moment. Feeding and clothing and sending your son to school isn’t enough. It’s a start, but that’s what it is – a start. These are some things that Evan did with his son in helping him to become a man: he prepared him for relationships, he showed him how to love a woman, he used the community of men around him to tell his son about their failures and what they learned from them, his son went into a place of solitude in the wilderness, his son’s mother wrote him a letter saying goodbye to him as a child, and they had a big ceremony to celebrate him becoming a man. On writing the book: If you want to write a book but don’t know if you can write a book, think of it less as writing a book and more as telling a story. In this segment, I let you peek into my journal as I share my thoughts on a topic or resilience resource. Evan’s interview got me thinking about those things we need to teach our children, but often miss out on. We are really not raising kids, are we? We’re really raising adults. We want our kids to grow up to be healthy and happy. In order to do that, we need to teach them a lot of things that aren’t taught in school. That goes for girls as well as boys. And it really does take a community. Maybe think about some of the kids that are in your life, whether it’s your own, or your nieces or nephews, grandkids, neighbor kids, or kids you are connected to in other ways. In what way can you, and I, help mold those kids, help them mature with the tools, skillset, and understanding they need to become resilient adults? What rites of passage need to come about? Who do you need to take under your wing or give a little advice to? I’m going to ponder that myself. That’s all we have for today. “I am the courageous heart that passionately beats to empower the hurt, broken, and lost. I believe that people are naturally creative, resourceful, and whole,” says life coach Matt Gagnon. “And it’s never too late to write your own comeback story.” Time for Your Own Comeback Story Highlights from the interview: The day he officially became a life coach – September 29th 2014 – was the greatest day of validation for him, because it felt like he was completely on the right track. He helps people through transition periods in their lives by helping them to articulate the story that’s in their head. It helps people because they’ve often never said these things out loud before for fear of being judged. If people aren’t owning things that happened, if they’re not being completely honest, he’ll call them out. He’ll do that until they see vulnerability not as a weakness, but as a strength. Journaling is important. Because you might say something for the first time, admit something for the first time, and then feel that high, that rush, and be proud of yourself. But then, when you go home, when you’re alone, you might feel shame, and you can’t believe you just said those things. That’s when its important to journal, to write it all down, because you’ll start to realize that this voice – the voice of the saboteur – is wrong. Saying you want to focus on your career goals is a safe way to get into coaching – a more accepted way, probably – but it always leads to stuff about a person’s life. Coaching is like taking your mind to the gym. His life and core purpose: “I am the courageous heart that passionately beats to empower the hurt, broken, and lost.” Another core belief is that each client is naturally creative, resourceful, and whole. Something to sit with and think about: it’s never too late – to follow your own passion, to live your dream, to write your own comeback story. In this segment, I let you peek into my journal as I share my thoughts on a topic or resilience resource. I really enjoyed this interview with Matt because I gained huge insights into what a life coach can ultimately do. They help you move your own road blocks out of the way! How valuable is that? Since we are all naturally creative, resourceful and whole, a life coach brings out the best in us at a critical time. A time when we can’t see or bring out the best in ourselves. They help us take our past and our present, and create a much better future. It’s a gift. I especially enjoyed the philosophy that it’s never too late to follow your own passion, to live your dream, and to write your own comeback story. Stop and think for a moment. If you were to write your comeback story, starting from where you are right now, what would that look like? It might be worth spending 20 or 30 minutes writing that out. Go ahead, put your dreams and desires, your passions, down on paper, and write your own comeback story. I’d love to hear what those are. Why worry twice? We can’t necessarily stop things, but we can stop freaking out about them. Dr. Kathy Gruver explains that the future always starts now. With every exhale we can make a more resilient choice. Resilient Rather than Freaking Out Highlights from the interview: Affirmations help to reduce stress – particularly if you handwrite them, because they’ll more easily go into your subconscious. People who wrote down affirmations about who they are, or positive events, found they went into future situations looking at the positive side of things, and not thinking about what could go wrong, and even having different reactions to things. It’s much better to say “I am healthy and well right now” than it is to say “I hope I don’t get sick.” Our body is incredibly suggestible to what other people say to us and to what we’re thinking about. Stress is hazardous – about 70 to 90% of doctor’s visits are due to stress-related illnesses. Why suffer twice? If you’re going to get news from the doctor about whether or not you have cancer in a week’s time, why worry about it now? If you have cancer, won’t that be bad enough anyway? Need you have worried about it all week and then felt even worse when you received the actual news? It’s better to think positively because you’ll be in a better state to handle any bad news when it does finally arrive. The more present we can be, the more positive we can be. “The future always starts now.” With every exhale we can make a different and more resilient choice. We can’t necessarily stop things, but we can stop freaking out about them. Listen to the episode for the full story. http://stacybrookman.com/webinar1 () Stacy’s Journal Welcome to Stacy’s Journal! In this segment, I let you peek into my journal as I share my thoughts on a topic or resilience resource. Let’s talk about affirmations. I’ve got to be honest, because that’s what a journal is about, right? Your honest feelings? In the past, I’ve not really been a fan of affirmations. Reminded me too much of the http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/daily-affirmations-ii/3506378?snl=1 (Saturday Night Live skit with Stuart Smalley). However, I’ve since done more digging into the mind/body connection. Self-affirmations really do help and there’s scientific evidence for that with one caveat. You have to really believe what you’re saying. If you don’t believe it, you could end up feeling even worse! To tweak affirmations and make them effective for you, scientists say that you should write about the things you value, such as your honesty, family, creativity, etc…Affirming those things you value, and remembering those times when you exhibited those values does activate the reward system in your brain and gives you those positive vibes. http://nymag.com/scienceofus/2015/11/why-self-affirmation-works.html (Here’s a great article about affirmations). With that, I think I’ll get to writing a few new affirmations of my own! That’s all we have for today. That’s all we have for today. Manny Wolfe believes that changing yourself will probably be the hardest thing you ever do…especially if you grew up in a cult in one of the most violent cities in America like he did. If you want to change, you have to take to it like a drowning man taking to a life preserver. Cult + Violence = Tough Childhood Highlights from the interview: Just because you’re born into something – in this case, a cult – doesn’t mean you can’t get out of it. And it doesn’t have to take you looking at an untraceable gun – in your own hand – to have the moment of clarity you need to do it. It also doesn’t mean you can’t someday be an example – a good example. To your son, daughter, and whoever else. And being an example, striving to be an example – that will fill you with purpose and joy. Writing can be the single biggest healing thing you ever engage in. You might need to do some other stuff to get you to the point of writing it all down, but once you get there, you will heal even more. If you do change, remember that your family – the people closest to you – will likely adjust the slowest, because they’re used to who you used to be. Any relationship that’s toxic will take more out of you than you’re aware of. Be warned: once you find your voice, you might not be able to stay away from the keyboard. Today, let’s talk about your origin story. As Manny shows, just because you’re born into a bad situation doesn’t mean you have to drag that baggage with you the rest of your life. Changing yourself like Manny did is probably the hardest thing you’ll ever do. In order to change, you have to get clear on where you are and where you’ve been. In other words, your origin story. How do you discover your origin story? You start with your life theme. Think back to the milestones in your life and the desires you’ve had in your life. Where do those intersect with some conflicts you’ve had in your life? It might be beneficial to get those down in black and white – either computer or paper. Maybe spend some time reflecting back on your life. What…or who…has defined your life? How have you made decisions in your life? What…or who…influenced those decisions? Start writing that down. Those are the seeds of your origin story that you’ll use to change your future. That’s all we have for today. After enduring a lengthy, stressful and difficult divorce from her sociopath husband, Stacy Brookman enrolled in a memoir class that changed her life forever. Stacy found when writing her crazy stories down on a piece of paper, she was able to gain clarity about her situation and work out the necessary steps she had to take in order to recover and move on from her breakup. Writing out your stories after a traumatic and harrowing life situation, can give you insights into what has happened and the courage to move forward. Stacy believes that life storytelling is an incredibly powerful tool for personal transformation. Its not always about the gramma and punctuation, its about pulling the wool from over your eyes, seeing things in black and white so you can do something about your situation. ‘Real life resilience’ is Stacy’s podcast and its mission is to tell stories of recovery from life’s most difficult trauma, and by example help people with tough life situations discover how to tell their own stories.
