Siobhan Huggins is an independent researcher with interests in cholesterol metabolism, inflammation, and metabolic diseases. She first went on a ketogenic diet for weight loss in August of 2016, and found that it resulted in numerous physical and mental health benefits. After meeting former podcast guest Dave Feldman at Ketofest 2017, Siobhan's passion for lipidology was ignited and she was driven to research all she could in an attempt to figure out how lipids were involved in the immune system and chronic diseases. After losing 80 pounds, she referred to a lipedema specialist for a possible diagnosis, which sparked her interest in the condition as a whole and the people it affects every day. She was finally diagnosed with lipedema in 2021, and she promptly joined the board of the Lipedema Project as a Research Specialist. She presents at various conferences on lipedema pathophysiology and the mechanisms of why ketogenic diets may be uniquely beneficial for managing lipedema symptoms and progression. She has since written several published articles on many platforms, including on Dave Feldman's Cholesterol Code website. Toney left his career in wind farm energy about ten years ago to become a full time caregiver for his mother who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and lost the ability to live independently.  Toney has dedicated his energies to finding ways to manage his mother's symptoms while charting new pathways of care after losing his father to the same horrible condition years before.Toney tried all the conventional treatments and dietary guidelines commonly prescribed by modern medicine, but was watching his mother rapidly decline in brain and physical health.  The diet the medical community promoted to treat Alzheimer's not only seemed to make the symptoms worse, but also caused Toney's mom to balloon in weight and have worsened bi-markers associated to overall health.Toney did his own research, put his mother on a high fat ketogenic lifestyle, which Toney and his wife also follow, and subsequently saw marked improvements in his mother's cognitive function and emotional health as well as body composition.  Toney now advocates for people to explore the possibilities to use a ketogenic diet as a possible component in the treatment protocol when it comes to brain health and degenerative brain conditions. To follow Toney Niko, check out the links below:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/wtoney.nikolatsopoulosInstagram: @thekdclifeBooks Mentioned on the episode:The Vegetarian Myth  by Lierre Keith: https://amzn.to/3x5VtASThe Paleo Cardiologist by Dr. Jack Wolfson: https://amzn.to/32sqRv8The Carnivore Cure by Judy Cho: https://amzn.to/3sA9SlnProducts mentioned on the show:KETO CHOW: http://shop.ketochow.xyz/?aff=81&ref=carriebrown  (10% discount)Redmond's Real Salt: https://shop.redmond.life?afmc=carriebrown  Code: carriebrown (15% discount)Bulk Supplements Beef Protein Isolate: https://amzn.to/2Q7G5U5Anthony's Collagen Powder: https://amzn.to/3tz8NM1Recipes Mentioned on the show:SUPER MOTHER CLUCKER BURGERS: https://carriebrown.com/archives/37806POWER PORKIES DRY CHILI BURGERS: https://carriebrown.com/archives/37804Other Podcast Episodes mentioned:The Fatty Joe Show featuring Nina Teicholz: https://carriebrown.com/archives/38960The Fatty Joe Show featuring Amy Berger: https://carriebrown.com/archives/38950The Fatty Joe Show featuring Jessyca Reynolds: https://carriebrown.com/archives/38944The Fatty Joe Show featuring Siobhan Huggins: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-fatty-joe-show/id1531503734#episodeGuid=105fbff8-9dc8-43b3-8741-22d62b64add4The Keto Man's Club Featuring Toney Niko: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/keto-mans-club-podcast/id1464919105?i=1000516571073https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/keto-mans-club-podcast/id1464919105?i=1000517757952 Be sure to rate, subscribe and leave a comment! To support the show and gain access to private groups, rewards, swag, and become a Kitchen or Fatty Joe Show Rockstar, use these links:http://www.patreon.com/thefattyjoeshowor http://www.patreon.com/carriebrownCheck out our website at http://www.thefattyjoeshow.comIf you want to sport some Fatty Joe Show swag like t-shirts coffee mugs and other cool items, go to:https://www.zazzle.com/collections/the_fatty_joe_show-119044829655147361?rf=238386382098264295For recipes, articles, product discounts, Cookbooks, and Cooking Masterclasses go to: http://www.carriebrown.comCarrie Brown Masterclasses:

Siobhan Huggins is an independent researcher focused on the science of keto, carnivory, inflammation, insulin resistance and how they all interact with each other. Over the past four years she has lost 80 lbs (36kg or 5.5stone), put chronic depression into remission, and made numerous health improvements - all from going on a ketogenic (and eventually carnivorous) diet. She hopes to continue learning the science so she can share it with others, in the hopes of better understanding why ketogenic and carnivorous diets appear to work for improving so many conditions, and why people sometimes struggle even when implementing these dietary strategies and doing everything "right". She is on the board of The Citizen Science Foundation, and is a frequent contributor to CholesterolCode.com where she posts on topics like lipids and immunity, heart disease, and inflammation, as well as the results of her self experiments with diet.In this episode Siobhan continues to explain the role of insulin, cholesterol and inflammation in a low carb, keto and carnivore way of eating lifestyle. Apparently Dr Attia only recommends Therapeutic Lipidology – looking over old blog posts on CholesterolCode, I do mention starting with this and then went on to read Clinical Lipidology right after, so that is correct. With that said, I'm not sure where I saw Clinical Lipidology recommended, but it wasn't from Attia. Additionally, the correct quote of what he says is “Anyone aspiring to be a lipid savant […] probably ought to get a copy.” From Part III of the straight dope on cholesterol series. Siobhan Huggins is a fantastic nutrition and health researcher, but she got her start from a personal experience transforming her own health. Here, she shares her story of overcoming depression, anxiety, hypertension, and many more ailments. For complete show notes, visit http://youcuredwhat.com/podcast/siobhan[2:45] Siobhan was an active, athletic child. At six years old, she had a six pack. However, she became depressed at the age of 10 or 11. After that, she started gaining weight and stopped many of the physical activities she used to enjoy. [3:50] By the time Siobhan turned 18, she was obese, hypertensive, and suffering from depression. [5:30] At 18, Siobhan was 5 feet, 1 inch tall, and she weighed 240 pounds. [6:15] Siobhan had tried using exercise to ameliorate her depression, but the depression remained. [7:30] Siobhan views her depression as having metabolic origin. “I was likely depressed because I wasn’t unhealthy.” [8:15] Siobhan tried calorie restriction, but it did not work well for her. [9:30] In late 2016, Siobhan’s mother suggested trying the ketogenic diet. [10:45] In two months on a ketogenic diet, Siobhan lost 20 pounds and her joint pain went away. [12:05] “It was the food which had put my depression into remission.” [12:25] “I’ve lost 80 pounds since I started the diet. I’m no longer hypertensive. I’m no longer depressed. I no longer have joint pain. My skin is so much better. Like, everything is just better.” [14:00] Siobhan describes some of the social anxiety she used to have, including specific conversations with her father which triggered negative emotions. [16:00] Siobhan grew up looking at depression as something genetic and inescapable. [18:00] Siobhan noticed that as her depression lifted, it gave her the opportunity to meet many other friends, as it enabled her to move away from negative self-talk and get to know others (specifically, at keto conferences). [21:00] Siobhan sometimes notices aspects of her depression returning if she accidentally eats certain foods. She took that to another level with a High-Carb Experiment. [22:15] Siobhan did a High-Carb Experiment. For the experiment, she ate high-carbohydrate, low-fat (the opposite of her typical low-carbohydrate, high-fat ketogenic carnivorous diet). She ate all whole food carbohydrate sources. The experiment was hyper-caloric. The effects of this experiment were very negative physically and mentally, and the after-effects lasted for months after the experiment. “It took two months to get back to normal.” [27:45] Siobhan’s experiment had a remarkable impact on her frame of mind and her physical health. And the only thing that changed during the experiment was the food she ate. [34:00] What foods did Siobhan start eating to initiate her positive health transformation? [41:10] Siobhan initially started eating a carnivore diet as an experiment, but she had such great results from it that she has stuck with it for approximately two years now. [43:00] What were the timelines for Siobhan’s improvements in depression, joint pain, skin health, and hypertension? [47:00] Siobhan also has had a great improvement in her menstrual cycle and greatly reduced cramping. [55:45] Now that she has improved her health, what is one thing Siobhan enjoys doing that she couldn’t do before?

If you are interested in lipids, you’ve probably heard of Dave Feldman and his work. If not,  you’ve got some homework to do, and I think you’ll be amazed at what you find. Dave’s work can found at cholesterolcode.com where he details his multiple, meticulous self-experimental projects. Prior to cholesterol adventures Dave was a senior software scientist and an engineer. He brings this “out of the box” thinking to the world of medicine and we are all better off for it.  He began a low-carb, high-fat diet in April 2015 and has since learned everything he could about it with special emphasis on cholesterol. He saw his own lipid numbers spike substantially after going on the diet and spotted a pattern in the lipid system that’s very similar to distributed objects in networks. This week's guest, Siobhan Huggins, is a stellar citizen scientist who has a passion for dissecting complex topics, and understanding how misbeliefs lead us astray. She has a remarkable gift of analyzing complex topics and reframing them from a systems and engineering point of view. Plus, her own personal journey through the low-carb keto lifestyle prompted her deeper dive into lipids, inflammation, insulin resistance and more. She understands that cholesterol is not inherently evil. Rather, it actually serves a purpose to help us. It's our lifestyle that alters it into something potentially harmful.   Most exciting of all, she has recently joined forces full-time with Dave Feldman at CholesterolCode.com, so we will be hearing much more exciting research and perspective shifts from Siobhan in the near future.   Key Takeaways:   [6:03] A keto diet has given Chivon improved health and changed her personality. [8:58] Research and reading has qualified Chivon to write for Cloresteralcode.com [12:07] Understanding inflammation and the chronic oxidation of LDL. [17:07] Scavenger receptors and small, dense LDL. [28:42] The human body wasn't designed to take on a constant barrage of insulin damage. [35:32] What causes vascular calcification? [43:32] The differentiator in familial hypercholesterolemia is the level of insulin resistance. [47:13] Lipoprotein(a): What is it used for?   Mentioned in This Episode: Low Carb Cardiologist Website Dr. Scher on Twitter Dr. Scher on Facebook Cholesterol Code   This Episode is Sponsored by LowCarbCardiologist.com and Your Best Health Ever! Cholesterol gets a bad rap everywhere. Poor bugger actually has quite a role to play and we decided to figure that out! Get ready to geek out on this two part fireside chat with Dave Feldman & Siobhan Huggins from Cholesterol Code! Dave Feldman Bio: Dave Feldman is a senior software engineer and entrepreneur. He began working with programming and system engineering at a very young age and has always enjoyed learning new mechanistic patterns and concepts. After starting a low carb diet, Dave found his cholesterol numbers increased considerably. He then began reverse engineering the lipid system through self-experimentation and testing, finding it was very dynamic and fluid. He has now demonstrated this multiple times by moving his cholesterol up and down substantially in a matter of days. Siobhan Huggins Bio: After meeting Dave Feldman at Ketofest 2017, Siobhan's passion for lipidology was ignited and she was driven to research all she could in a mad attempt to figure out how lipids were involved in the immune system and chronic diseases. She has since written 2 articles that have been published on cholesterolcode.com  -  on plaque development and LDL modification - with many more posts planned.  Sio has been keto for 15 months in which time she has lost over 65 pounds, reversed her hypertension and stopped her blood sugars from going out of control.  Although later to the game than most, Siobhan has dedicated herself to decoding the mysteries of cholesterol and is just getting started. Time Stamps: 2:02 – How can you crowdsource a nutritional & health study? 5:36 – How is social life effected when you decide to become a citizen scientist? 8:05 – Does family history & genetics play a role in heart disease? 9:45 – The most important factor that contributes to heart health 12:01 – What’s the fastest way to die from heart disease? 12:42 – How do you know that the self-study is safe? 16:28 – Who is a “Hyper Responder”? 20:48 – How do exogenous ketones impact the lipoprotein system? 22:32 – What biomarkers should we keep an eye on? 28:40 – How do you differentiate good from bad inflammation in the body? 30:22 – Inversion pattern and how would you devise a scientific study? 35:20 – What kind of parameters would be set for a good scientific study? 37:55 – “The Curious Case of The Small Dense LDL Particle” 43:43 – Can you upgrade or improve the lipoprotein system? 50:22 – Is APOB of any significance? 51:44 – Why no lean mass hyper responders & is there a hypothesis on why keto adapted athletes show lower ketones levels? 53:55 – What future do you see for crypto currencies and how it will influence our political system? 56:12 – Final message 58:22 – Final Plug Plugs: Website: http://cholesterolcode.com/ Ketogeek: https://ketogeek.com/ Dave Feldman: https://twitter.com/DaveKeto Siobhan Huggins: https://twitter.com/siobhan_huggins
