What if everything we thought we knew about cholesterol and heart disease risk… doesn't apply to everyone? In this episode, world-renowned cardiologist Dr. Matthew Budoff unpacks the results of a landmark one-year study tracking 100 lean, metabolically healthy individuals on a ketogenic diet with extremely elevated LDL levels.Dr. Budoff is the Program Director, Director of Cardiac CT, and the endowed chair of preventive cardiology at The Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovation at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. In this interview, Dr. Scher and Dr. Budoff further break down the results of his new publication, which used advanced imaging to demonstrate that LDL cholesterol and ApoB levels are not associated with plaque progression in Lean-Mass Hyper Responders following a ketogenic diet.
Nessa live, eu conversei com Daniel Mamede (@daniel_mamede). Daniel é um dos participantes do estudo dos hiperrespondedores e nesse bate papo conversamos sobre o ultimo estudo publicado no dia 07 de Abril.
Is LDL cholesterol the best way to measure and predict heart disease?New research suggests no!Dave Feldman is an engineer turned citizen scientist who has devoted his life to understanding a phenomenon that some individuals around the world are experiencing: a robust increase in LDL cholesterol while on a ketogenic diet.Dave's past research has identified a unique phenotype dubbed Lean Mass Hyper-Responders (LMHRs). LMHRs respond to ketogenic therapy with a metabolic profile that includes elevated LDL-C and ApoB levels with otherwise healthy metabolic markers, including low triglycerides, high HDL, low blood pressure, low insulin resistance, and low BMI.In Dave's most recent publication, what most doctors would consider dangerously high LDL levels in LMHRs did not correlate with an increased risk of heart disease. In this video, Dr. Bret Scher sits down with Dave Feldman to discuss this groundbreaking study and its implications for ketogenic therapy and cardiology.Key Takeaways:LMHRs on a long-term ketogenic diet who show elevated LDL can show robust metabolic healthLDL-C and ApoB were not linked to plaque progression in LMHRsExisting plaque did predict future plaque accumulation in LMHRsIndividualized approaches to cardiovascular risk assessment are crucial to serve this group better.
Episode 2612 - Vinnie Tortorich speaks with Dave Feldman about being a "citizen scientist," his documentary "Cholesterol Code," and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2025/02/citizen-scientist-dave-feldman-episode-2612 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS YOU CAN WATCH ALL THE PODCAST EPISODES ON YOUTUBE - Citizen Scientist People challenge Dave and the information he gives about cholesterol because he is an engineer, not a formally trained scientist. (5:00) He has gained abundant knowledge through the studies and scientists he has worked with. (8:00) Being a citizen scientist has advantages and disadvantages; while it allows for innovative insights, it can also lead to skepticism from trained professionals regarding credibility and expertise. He has also started the Citizen Science Foundation. Dave started learning more about cholesterol after having questionable test results. (14:00) He describes signs of a bad metabolism and that issues like insulin resistance are drivers of cardiovascular disease. (19:00) Metabolic health is a more critical cardiovascular risk indicator than LDL cholesterol levels, challenging traditional medical assumptions. Lean Mass Hyper Responders, a term coined by Feldman, describes individuals on low-carb, high-fat diets who exhibit high LDL cholesterol levels but maintain good metabolic health, sparking significant interest and further research. (22:00) Cholesterol Code Movie Dave recaps his journey and discusses the making of the documentary, “Cholesterol Code.” (44:00) The film features personal narratives from individuals using ketogenic diets for various health issues, highlighting their experiences with cholesterol and metabolic health. “Cholesterol Code” incorporates scientific studies, emphasizing accurate representation of research findings and avoiding misleading claims, presenting a balanced view of ketogenic diets. Siobhan Huggins is an independent researcher with interests in cholesterol metabolism, inflammation, and metabolic diseases. She first went on a ketogenic diet for weight loss in August of 2016, and found that it resulted in numerous physical and mental health benefits. After meeting former podcast guest Dave Feldman at Ketofest 2017, Siobhan's passion for lipidology was ignited and she was driven to research all she could in an attempt to figure out how lipids were involved in the immune system and chronic diseases. After losing 80 pounds, she referred to a lipedema specialist for a possible diagnosis, which sparked her interest in the condition as a whole and the people it affects every day. She was finally diagnosed with lipedema in 2021, and she promptly joined the board of the Lipedema Project as a Research Specialist. She presents at various conferences on lipedema pathophysiology and the mechanisms of why ketogenic diets may be uniquely beneficial for managing lipedema symptoms and progression. She has since written several published articles on many platforms, including on Dave Feldman's Cholesterol Code website. Dave Feldman is the founder of the Citizen Science Foundation and is known for his research into the ketogenic diet. Dave is a software engineer by training who embraced a ketogenic diet to avoid his progression toward type 2 diabetes. he joins us on this episode of STEM-Talk to share that journey. After undertaking the high-fat/low-carbohydrate diet, Dave' LDL cholesterol spiked. Dave used his training as an engineer to start learning everything he could about cholesterol and lipids. What he learned led him to create the website Cholesterol Code, a research hub for information and emerging data on cholesterol, particularly in the context of a low-carbohydrate lifestyle. Dave's Citizen Science Foundation is designed to support projects and research that promote collaborative efforts across multiple disciplines, both in and outside formal scientific institutions. Show notes: [00:02:53] Dawn opens the interview asking Dave what he was like as a kid. [00:03:44] Dawn mentions that Dave divided his time as a child between Denver and Wichita due to his parents' divorce and asks Dave what the best part of his childhood was. [00:04:28] Ken mentions that Dave has described both his parents as graphic artists and Bohemian, “hippie spirit” types. Ken asks what he learned from them that fueled his interests and goals. [00:05:46] Ken asks about Dave's first computer, which was a Commodore 64, as well as his early experience with computers. [00:08:50] Dawn mentions that Dave's interest in computers came in a time before the internet and asks what he learned about computing in those days. [00:10:51] Dawn explains that since Dave grew up in the 1980s, there was not much in the way of computer science curriculum in schools and asks Dave how he supported his interest in programming. [00:12:33] Ken asks Dave about how self-directed learning has been a theme throughout his whole life. [00:14:35] Dawn asks Dave about his childhood hobbies, including running and competitive storytelling. [00:17:01] Ken asks how Dave's experiences in forensic debate in high school helped his career later in life. [00:18:56] Dawn mentions that Dave initially attended film school and asks if it is true that Dave's side hustle of doing contract software work overtook his original plan to graduate. [00:20:49] Dawn asks about Dave's experiences working in the game platform development business in Las Vegas, as well as what these experiences taught him. [00:22:23] Ken asks Dave about a “the piece of paper” that Dave says changed his life in 2015. [00:28:58] Ken follows up, asking Dave if he checked his LDL-P or his ApoB at the same time as his cholesterol levels. [00:30:37] Ken mentions that he knows some people that when consuming a ketogenic diet did not see a substantial increase in LDL-C, but did experience a substantial elevation of LDL-P. [00:35:03] Ken pivots to discuss a paper that Dave and others published in Current Developments in Nutrition in 2022 titled: “Elevated LDL Cholesterol with a Carbohydrate-Restricted Diet: Evidence for Lean Mass Hyper-Responder Phenotype.” Ken asks Dave to describe what it means to be a lean mass hyper-responder. [00:40:19] Ken mentions his caution against the term lean mass hyper-responder, as it is unclear what “lean mass” refers to in this case. Ken goes on to say that while the lean mass hyper-responder phenotype can be objectively measured in terms of LDL, HDL and triglyceride levels, the lean mass aspect is often measured in these studies with BMI, which is unable to measure body composition. Ken asks Dave what his thoughts are on this and if he would like the possibility of moving away from BMI and towards DEXA scans. [00:43:37] Ken mentions that Dave's original article describing the lean mass hyper-responder phenotype has received a lot of response from individuals claiming to fall into that category. While it is difficult to get a precise estimate of the popul...

Dave Feldman is a returning guest on our show! Check out his first appearance on Boundless Body Radio on episode 109, where he was interviewed by our mutual friend, guest host Dr. Nick Norwitz! Dave Feldman is a senior software engineer, entrepreneur and a citizen scientist. After starting a low-carb diet in 2015, Dave found that his cholesterol numbers had increased considerably. He then began reverse-engineering the lipid system through self-experimentation and testing, finding the system to be very dynamic and fluid. He has now demonstrated this phenomenon multiple times by moving his cholesterol up and down substantially in a matter of days. He's discovered similar and reproducible patterns in others and has since researched a particular phenotype that he coined “lean mass hyper responder”, or LMHR for short.Dave is the creator of the popular blog Cholesterol Code, where he shares all of his knowledge and research. Dave is also the founder of the Citizen Science Foundation, a non-profit that has funded several incredible studies. Dave has recently hosted the incredible Collaborative Science Conference in his hometown of Las Vegas in March of 2024, which I was fortunate to attend. Siobhan Huggins grew up with a negative self-image. At 18, she was obese and developed depression. Whenever she tried a new diet, her depression symptoms would get worse. Later on, she was diagnosed with lipedema. Her mom encouraged her to learn more about the ketogenic diet. She decided to do keto strictly for 2 months. The changes she experienced - from losing weight to improving her mental health - made her stick with it. This gave her the drive to research more about its benefits.Siobhan knew how the ketogenic diet became instrumental to the improvement of her physical health and mental wellness. The presence of the keto community reminded her that she was not alone in this journey and that kept her going. In this episode, Siobhan shares that amidst her obesity, depression, and lipedema, her choice to do a carnivore diet and the support system of the community contributed big time to where she is now, and she continues to give back to help others too.Quick Guide:01:06 Introduction02:23 Younger years and struggle with negativity09:42 Adapting to the ketogenic diet16:57 Her mindset on how she approached the change in diet19:33 The Cholesterol Code and David Feldman25:29 How ketogenic diet help in her depression36:01 Physical effects of the ketogenic diet37:11 Self-experiment with fasting and finding about lipedema42:31 What happens with people who have lipedema1:01:09 How the diet affects the experience of lipedema1:08:44 How her day-to-day life isGet to know our guest:Siobhan Huggins is a citizen scientist. One of the main concerns that people new to ketogenic diets is cholesterol. For over 60 years, we have been told that cholesterol was the main cause of heart disease and people interested in the benefits of a keto diet can't ignore the elephant in the room while trying to justify eating a diet based on larger amounts of fat. These seemingly opposite positions create a lot of confusion understandably. What's also fascinating is the fact that not everyone who starts ketogenic diet has the same results when it comes to cholesterol. To discuss this complicated issue and their groundbreaking research, we invited Dave Feldman and Nick Norwitz to the show. Dave is the founder of The Cholesterol Code and he teamed up with Nick to create The Lipid Energy Model (LEM) which examines the phenomenon of rising cholesterol levels for those on low carbohydrate diets and how this may provide powerful insights into lipid metabolism overall.
On today's episode, Dr. Jaime interviews Engineer and Entrepreneur, Dave Feldman. "I'm a senior software engineer and entrepreneur.I began a low-carb, high-fat diet in April 2015 and have since learned everything I could about it with special emphasis on cholesterol given my lipid numbers spiked substantially after going on the diet. As an engineer, I spotted a pattern in the lipid system that's very similar to distributed objects in networks.I've since learned quite a bit on the subject both through research and experimentation which has revealed some very powerful data (see my Cholesterol Code series Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, and Part V).As of this writing, my “Extreme Drop” experiment has gotten the most attention (see infographic here, and do-it-yourself page here) where I induced a 73 point drop in my LDL-C and a 1115 point drop in my LDL-P."Holistic Life NavigationThis podcast explores how to heal stress & trauma holistically. Dave Feldman is a researcher working on research to better understand the Lipid Energy Model from the perspective of "Lean Mass Hyper Responders". In this episode, we talk about a bunch of the work he is doing to provide his own body of work to the information that already exists when it comes to cholesterol. If you are considering an animal-based diet, cholesterol is an important topic to understand particularly when it comes to understanding your bloodwork. Dave explains the medical community's current understanding of cholesterol and its important role in the body and much more in this episode. Enjoy! Hi again and welcome to episode 2 of our we love our heart podcast – and have we got something special for you! I am talking to Johnny Bowden, health coach, Doctor and author of the great book “ The Cholesterol Code.” Have you ever been made anxious by your doctor talking to you about raised cholesterol? Have you been advised to take statins to reduce the LDL number? Then you should listen in as Johnny talks tome about how those numbers are measured and what they might mean and what are the possible real benefits of statins… you may be in for a big surprise!! Johnny will share with us some absolute nuggests of knowledge e.g. It was not so long ago Cholesterol used to be 1 single number!! Then - what a revelation – it became two!!! HDL and LDL, mistakenly labelled as good guy and bad guy cholesterol. Well guess what? Today we can recognize 13, 1 3 different types of cholesterol, and the number is growing!! And whilst Statins were introduced on a large scale around the early 90s there were already numerous cholesterol lowering drugs that showed little or no benefit for heart disease – So what makes Statins apparently better? Johnny will explain in his own style! Now listen to the end as he explains the simplest test in the world for insulin resistance – potentially the start of heart disease. Dave Feldman is a senior software engineer and entrepreneur who uses his engineering mindset to look at biological systems as a whole. Dave explores how biological networks function and often finds data that contradicts our current way of thinking in regards to health and cholesterol.Dave began a Low Carb High Fat diet in April 2015 and started researching everything he could about carbohydrate restriction and lipid function - with special emphasis on cholesterol - when his lipid numbers spiked substantially after going on the diet. As an engineer he spotted a pattern in the lipid system that's very similar to distributed objects in networks.Dave has since learned a ton on the subject - both through research and experimentation - which has revealed some very powerful data. With this new general theory Dave shifted around his cholesterol substantially without any drugs or special supplements of any kind. Dave went on to create The Cholesterol Code website where he shares his research and helps others understand lipids in order to achieve better health goals.⭐️To contact or follow Dave Feldman:Website:

Siobhan Huggins is an independent researcher focused on the science of keto, carnivory, inflammation, insulin resistance and how they all interact with each other. Over the past four years she has lost 80 lbs (36kg or 5.5stone), put chronic depression into remission, and made numerous health improvements - all from going on a ketogenic (and eventually carnivorous) diet. She hopes to continue learning the science so she can share it with others, in the hopes of better understanding why ketogenic and carnivorous diets appear to work for improving so many conditions, and why people sometimes struggle even when implementing these dietary strategies and doing everything "right". She is on the board of The Citizen Science Foundation, and is a frequent contributor to CholesterolCode.com where she posts on topics like lipids and immunity, heart disease, and inflammation, as well as the results of her self experiments with diet.In this episode Siobhan continues to explain the role of insulin, cholesterol and inflammation in a low carb, keto and carnivore way of eating lifestyle. She talks about some self experiments she tried on herself and effects these had on her even when she returned to carnivore. Siobhan eats a high fat carnivore diet and she tells us some of the different ways she eats the fat.Siobhan's Top TipsGet baselines as soon as possibleever stop experimenting and even retrying things if you've tried them before.Do your research Resources MentionedCholesterolcode.com https://cholesterolcode.com/Report https://cholesterolcode.com/report/Labs https://cholesterolcode.com/lab-testing/Lean mass hyper responder https://cholesterolcode.com/lmhr/Citizen Scientist Foundation https://citizensciencefoundation.org/Amber O'Hearn carnivore diets https://facultativecarnivore.com/about-the-author/Amber O'Hearn 2017 Ketofest presentation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4VRp5ZFFRUKWP April Ihly episode https://ketowomanpodcast.com/?s=april+ihlyFire in the bottle blog https://fireinabottle.net/about-fire-in-a-bottle/Siobahn's presentation at Ketofest 2019https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8my6dGwzG4Georgia Ede at Breckenridge https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXlVfwJ6RQUMike Eades presentation at Breckenridge https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MTNJNAZPiwPemmican recipe

Apparently Dr Attia only recommends Therapeutic Lipidology – looking over old blog posts on CholesterolCode, I do mention starting with this and then went on to read Clinical Lipidology right after, so that is correct. With that said, I'm not sure where I saw Clinical Lipidology recommended, but it wasn't from Attia. Additionally, the correct quote of what he says is “Anyone aspiring to be a lipid savant […] probably ought to get a copy.” From Part III of the straight dope on cholesterol series. Dave Feldman is a software engineer and runs the Cholesterol Code website. In 2015 Dave adopted a low-carb high-fat diet, which improved his overall health. However, upon seeing his LDL-cholesterol skyrocket, he set out learn all he could about blood lipids and health. Dave has gained prominence as a “LDL-skeptic” and promoter of his “lipid triad” hypothesis. This lipid triad relates to a situation where one sees high LDL-C, high HDL-C and low triglycerides. Dave hypothesises that in such a context, the high LDL-C does not confer high risk of cardiovascular disease. This is counter to the current consensus position of the lipid hypothesis, where LDL plays a causal role in atherosclerosis development. Alan Flanagan is the Research Communication Officer here at Sigma Nutrition. Alan is currently pursuing his PhD in nutrition at the University of Surrey, UK, with a research focus in chrononutrition. Alan previuosly completed a Masters in Nutritional Medicine at the same institution. SHOW NOTES: https://sigmanutrition.com/episode321

Today we are joined by Dave Feldman from Cholesterol Code. Four years ago, Dave Feldman, an engineer, after several months on the Keto diet, became interested in Cholesterol. Now, having years of study and research under his belt, he is helping to clarify for laypeople and doctors alike the purpose and function of Cholesterol. We discuss all things Cholesterol in this very informative episode. If you are interested in lipids, you’ve probably heard of Dave Feldman and his work. If not, you’ve got some homework to do, and I think you’ll be amazed at what you find. Dave’s work can found at cholesterolcode.com where he details his multiple, meticulous self-experimental projects. Prior to cholesterol adventures Dave was a senior software scientist and an engineer. He brings this “out of the box” thinking to the world of medicine and we are all a better off for it. He began a low-carb, high-fat diet in April 2015 and has since learned everything he could about it with special emphasis on cholesterol. He saw his own lipid numbers spike substantially after going on the diet and spotted a pattern in the lipid system that’s very similar to distributed objects in networks. He’s since learned quite a bit on the subject both through research and experimentation which has revealed some very powerful data (see his Cholesterol Code series Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, and Part V). As of this writing, his “Extreme Drop” experiment has gotten the most attention (see infographic here, and do-it-yourself page here) where he induced a 73 point drop in my LDL-C and a 1115 point drop in my LDL-P. Mike and Dr. Drew are joined by Dave Feldman, a software engineer who discovered that a lo-carb, high fat diet dramatically shifted his cholesterol numbers without using drugs or supplements. We get into the Cholesterol Code, the Feldman Protocol, statins, and Ketogenic diets. Correction from Dave at 29:50: "I meant to say there’s no ‘primary prevention’ trial for statins that showed a statistically significant drop in all cause mortality, save Jupiter." Hello everyone! Wanted to do an update on the Food Lies film: we’re shooting at low carb USA in San Diego in a couple weeks with Ivor and a couple other doctors, including the preeminent researcher in this field (along with Dr. Steve Phinney) Dr. Jeff Volek who’s studies are actually mentioned a few times in this episode. Really excited about this shoot and our next one at conference in Ohio next month. Also really excited that we’re 34% funded on Indiegogo - there’s been a huge surge recently so I want to thank everyone who’s been contributing. I want to say the film is happening no matter what. I’ll pay for it myself if I have to. So please support it - there’s a link in the show notes. http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post This is really important to me. I’m not some rich guy like pete Evans who made The magic Pill. I’m a guy living on some money i saved up so that I could take time off to make this film, just trying to scrape by. My friends think I’m crazy. So tell a friend about it if you can’t contribute yourself or already have. Thanks so much. Now on to this episode. Ivor Cummins is a sharp Irish gent. He’s a chemical engineer by trade and his specialty is leading teams in complex problem solving scenarios. This background helped him to really dive deep into cholesterol while also being unencumbered by the outdated mainstream views of the substance. He’s gone over 3,000 studies on cholesterol and made some amazing realizations. He now travels around the world speaking on this to help doctors and laypeople understand the new data and updated science. I did link to some of the graphs he will mention - they’re pretty compelling - here's the link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kES6-ueXSghNuae5Qzh-QzbGwLThwdRs67eF9Qlle-0/edit?usp=sharing Find Ivor: http://Thefatemperor.com https://twitter.com/FatEmperor Show Notes Got back from FOOD FOR THOUGHT: THE SCIENCE AND POLITICS OF NUTRITION http://institute.swissre.com/events/food_for_thought_bmj.html Most people have a surface level understanding of cholesterol that is highly misinformed Top experts have moved on from LDL being bad How your cholesterol ratios work and why they’re a better indicator. Cholesterol gets a bad rap everywhere. Poor bugger actually has quite a role to play and we decided to figure that out! Get ready to geek out on this two part fireside chat with Dave Feldman & Siobhan Huggins from Cholesterol Code! Dave Feldman Bio: Dave Feldman is a senior software engineer and entrepreneur. He began working with programming and system engineering at a very young age and has always enjoyed learning new mechanistic patterns and concepts. After starting a low carb diet, Dave found his cholesterol numbers increased considerably. He then began reverse engineering the lipid system through self-experimentation and testing, finding it was very dynamic and fluid. He has now demonstrated this multiple times by moving his cholesterol up and down substantially in a matter of days. Siobhan Huggins Bio: After meeting Dave Feldman at Ketofest 2017, Siobhan's passion for lipidology was ignited and she was driven to research all she could in a mad attempt to figure out how lipids were involved in the immune system and chronic diseases. She has since written 2 articles that have been published on cholesterolcode.com - on plaque development and LDL modification - with many more posts planned. Sio has been keto for 15 months in which time she has lost over 65 pounds, reversed her hypertension and stopped her blood sugars from going out of control. Although later to the game than most, Siobhan has dedicated herself to decoding the mysteries of cholesterol and is just getting started.
