Three entrepreneurs who used social media to stand> out and one influencer that helps us understand what’s next [caption id="attachment_3930" align="aligncenter" width="150"] Dhariana Lozano[/caption] [caption id="attachment_5574" align="aligncenter" width="150"] Blake Jamieson[/caption] [caption id="attachment_6023" align="aligncenter" width="150"] Dr. Ai Zhang[/caption] [caption id="attachment_5721" align="aligncenter" width="150"] David Meerman Scott[/caption]   Wednesday, February 26, 2020—I’m making my last preparations for my flight tomorrow to San Diego, where I’ll attend the largest and most important international conference for social media. In my bag, along with my laptop and book, are two of the best face masks, which I promised my daughter (and the mother of my first granddaughter, four months old) that I’d wear throughout the flights to the conference—a 22-hour journey. The coronavirus crisis is huge. For the sixth year in a row, I’m flying to the Social Media Marketing World Conference in San Diego … and I don’t even provide social media services to my clients. However, throughout the last 12 years (among my 33-year career in executive marketing positions), I have helped entrepreneurs achieve business success. Social media is, by far, the most important method that any entrepreneur can use today to become known, stand out from the crowd, and reach sustainable success. Wednesday evening news: The health department just published new instructions and recommendations to avoid flying abroad and to avoid participation in international conferences. I won’t be able to physically attend the conference in San Diego this year. Within 24 hours, I made all the needed arrangements to cancel my flights and replaced my attendant in-person ticket to the virtual ticket.   So, especially for the Social Media Marketing World Conference, let’s listen to three entrepreneurs who used social media to stand out and start building their successful entrepreneurship, and to one of the most important influencers in the field.   Blake Jamieson studied economics and today is a portrait artist for professional athletes. Blake’s story I grew up in a very creative household. I was always encouraged to paint, or draw, or do photography – all the things I do today. However, I convinced myself, from a young age, that art was about being a starving artist and that it was not a career path. Instead of doing what my parents encouraged me to do, which was to study art in college, I decided to study economics and tech. I thought this was the safe path at the time, and I aimed to have a career in marketing. When I graduated from college, social marketing was just starting to become an actual, respected career. I was able to get into very grounded levels for some reputable companies and work my way through several different companies. Then I spun off and started working for myself as a freelancer. Ultimately, on my 30th birthday, I decided that I was tired of working for someone else’s dream. I wanted to follow my own dreams and I realized that maybe my parents had been right all along... I’m very grateful. Due to my background in marketing – especially digital marketing – and my experience in marketing a wide range of products, I understand how social selling works and how it is really a relationship-building business. I built up a moderate following of friends, family, colleagues, and people I met along the way. When I first decided to start painting, I knew that I had to specialize and come out with a specific niche. I decided that I would paint a specific painting for a specific subset of people. Because of my networking at the time, I decided to paint for offices, especially for tech companies. I met with the people on my contact list and told them that I was an artist and that I painted office art for tech companies. At first, I...

How a broken bridle on a reining horse can relate to voice and other digital disruptions

In Episode 27, hear an analogy of how the removal of a broken bridle from a reining horse during a championship-level ride can relate to our choices to either support or interfere with our marketing and technology teams as they offer strategies to future ready our businesses. Welcome in to Episode 27 of Agile Digital Business podcast where Season 2 is focused on the voice platform. I am Vickie Maris, a digital futurist, voice platform evangelist, and host of Agile Digital Business podcast. I like to challenge you to see the future of your business through the lenses of your future customers, clients, association members and program participants. Through the listener community in Patreon, you can engage in discussion around the topics covered in the podcast that will spark ideas for how you can flex your strategy and align the way you communicate about your products and services in ways that your customer is asking for today.  This episode is "freestyle." I'd like to bring you up to speed on where I’ve been. If you’ve been listening to the show on a regular basis, you’ve heard me talk about our music. My husband, Scott Greeson and I, are songwriters and entertainers. When we book for festivals and concert venues, we are often performing with our friends in the band, Trouble With Monday. We also perform as a duo, trio and other combinations of the musicians in the band. Our world was rocked on Jan 31st when we learned that our sound man, Bryan Metzger, had passed away of a heart attack while on vacation. There are still moments when it is hard to believe that he’s gone. We have been practicing many of the tools that I have written about in my books for processing grief in healthy ways that lead us in to the future rather than dwelling on the past. But believe me, there are moments when that is a lot easier to say than to do.  Scott and I are leading a day retreat, Changing Life Journal Writing Retreat, to help you with advancing your writing projects and journaling on March 7th at an Airbnb in South Bend, Indiana near Notre Dame. We’re looking forward to spending time in the quiet to reflect, to write, to plan and to support each other in a few moments of quiet conversation during the day. If you would like to join us for the event, there are a few spots remaining. It’s listed out on EventBrite.    One of the reasons I started delving in to understanding the voice platform and how musicians, authors and businesses should be preparing, was because we haven’t had great results when asking Amazon Alexa if she has information about Scott’s music or about my books. I have been working on changes to my website and other marketing in order to make my content more discoverable. Here’s the curiosity - since my books are self-published in Amazon, you would think that it would be really easy for Alexa (created by Amazon) to dip in to a data pool that would provide her with details about the titles, author, or content. But she isn’t yet very informed so, I am, one very slow step at a time, updating my web pages, claiming my author panel in Google, updating my About page, improving load time on my site, and several other things.   One of my favorite episodes in the voice space during recent weeks has been the 100th episode of Inside Voice. The episode is titled, Marketing Tips by Leaders in the Space. I highly recommend that you listen to it. The show is hosted by Keri Roberts. There is a focus on voice technology with educational and innovative content. I often listen to episodes of this show during my commute. Because of that, I use my voice to take notes by asking Siri to “make a note.” I have developed a process for putting a keyword in the first sentence of each note so they are easier to search for later when I’m developing a podcast episode or writing my next book. For instance, I might say, Siri, make a note, and then my first sentence will be, Podcast next episode, period. Include my notes from episode 100 of Inside Voice podcast, period. Helpful tips for my listeners. Period.   One of the concepts shared by Stuart Crane of Survey Line and Voice Metrics.io is that his companies are collecting leads by voice and creating tools to help other companies use voice for lead generation. The tool,  surveysbyvoice is a product of Survey Line. Stuart also talks about a new platform his company has available called engagebyvoice.com voicemetrics.io For details about tickets for Voice Summit, Oct. 5-8, 2020, in Washington, DC: https://www.voicesummit.ai/tickets   I have recently proposed a conference talk on the topic of future readying your professional development center to survive and thrive in an age of self-education, AI and other digital disruptions. I’m looking at how trends in self-education, uses of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the advance of digital voice assistants are shaping lifelong learning. It’s such a fascinating space. I’ve heard Dr. Joe Dispenza say on videos in YouTube that in the age of the Internet with all the information that is available for free, ignorance is a choice.   Scott and I will be playing music for a private event on Saturday night with a couple of our other fellow musicians. After that event, I head out to Social Media Marketing World Conference. I’ve attended that event since 2014 and find it to be one of the best run conferences around. I do admit that I liked it better when it wasn’t so huge in terms of numbers who attend, but it still is an amazing place to get energized about techniques and tools for marketing and engaging in social media with your customers. In fact, it was at one of the previous editions of this conference when I learned about Flash Briefings in a breakout session for podcasters. Last year, I gleaned several great pieces of content for developing a YouTube channel and for taking advantage of LinkedIn and the fact that there is so little original content posted by LinkedIn users. That hasn’t been a category that I fall in as I have loved to post short videos on LinkedIn about leadership lessons and tips for working with teams that I pick up from the time I spend training our llamas and Connemara pony. In fact, I just posted a new video last night on my LinkedIn feed, that I recorded while sitting in the barn aisle with the llamas. I talk about developing trust among your team members. A few days prior to that, I shared a link to a video on YouTube of an amazing ride by Dan Huss on his championship reining horse, a Quarter Horse, Ms Dreamy. The bridle broke during the early part of the ride. Dan chose to continue the pattern. He reached down to get the swinging bridle out from between the front legs of his mare, and then rode her as if there was no tomorrow. By putting a 2nd hand on the reins, he was disqualified but it didn’t deter him. Every turn, every change of speed, every sliding stop, was delivered expertly and calmly by his horse through communication she was receiving from Dan by slight changes in his seat and legs; and a demeanor that reflected their long-time connection. It made me think of the things we’re all doing to get our businesses future ready for voice. Are you pulling your marketing team up to a halt to assess the situation, to approve of every equipment change and to get legal involved? Or are you reaching in while they are still at full speed and getting broken equipment out of the way so that they can take the company (your team) to future success by opening up channels to better listen to your customers in the ways they want to be communicating with you? I hope it’s the latter. As I’ve been listening to and watching videos of Dr. Joe Dispenza talking about speaking intentions about the future and speaking gratitude about the future as if it already exists, I’ll leave you with this thought to consider for the next part of your day, “What is the greatest ideal of myself that I can be today?”    Friend, I love you and appreciate you being here listening and learning. Now, please join me in the quest to teach; inspire; and connect!

As a news brief, I've recorded part of the bonus content here for you in Episode 15 of Agile Digital Business. This episode is 6:30 minutes in length. Here are the time codes and themes of the episode: 0:34 Introduction to this brief, news episode that features part of the content that I shared with students at the end of my session last week as bonus content. I was teaching about voice search and preparing our businesses for the digital realm.  :49 Mention of the book by Mark W. The 4As are Acceptability, Affordability, Accessibility and Awareness. Douglas Burdett and Jagdish Sheth talk about the 4As and how they differ from the 4 Ps - product, place, promotion and price. There was discussion about how the 4Ps can sometimes be internally focused. 2:30 Jagdish mentions the trend of having a marketing officer report in to a finance position. He talks about the differences when a CMO reports in to the CEO. 3:11 Another section of the Bonus Content is about the question of "who is in charge of our digital footprint?" 3:23 "Digital disrespects departments," according to international consultant and instructor, Taru Jain, CEO of Futuremarketer. He teaches in the Digital Marketing Certificate program offered by Rutgers University. He regularly posts interesting content on digital marketing and future trends in LinkedIn. I suggest that you follow him in the social media platform to keep up with the news he is sharing on a regular basis.  3:59 Joe Urbany, professor of marketing at the University of Notre Dame, taught in a professional development session for executives last week at the university. He shared information from research by Whitler, Krause and Lehmann on the percentages of people on boards of directors with marketing experience. (the average was 2.6 percent). Whitler, Krause and Lehmann research in 2015, shows that including a person with marketing experience on the board can create positive impact on shareholder value. 4:46 I share insights from Marcus Sheridan whom I have heard speak on several occasions at Social Media Marketing World Conference.  5:15 Mention of the predictions that video along the pathway to purchase for 80 percent of the purchasing decisions in 2019.  5:27 He suggests that we have a video available for each of the 7 questions that our customers ask most frequently about our products or services. He also recommends that we take the 7 videos and mesh them together for an "80% video," which is a video that answers the questions that are getting asked 80% of the time.  6:11 Thank you for listening to Agile Digital Business podcast, with host, Vickie Maris. 6:18 Let's go out and teach, inspire and connect! Imagine you are in an inflatable boat, surrounded by all of your close friends and family. You are told not to rock the boat so that you may stay safe inside. There are people all around you who tell you that you are able to go to any island that you would like to go to, just as long as you don’t venture out too far. Seems boring, huh? Well, what they don’t tell you is that you have a compass and a paddle. The truth of the matter is, we all have an island that we are called to. Each one of us has our own boat and our own destination. Our guest this week, Sagi Shrieber, believes that in order to find our own island, we must have a clear vision of where we want to go to. Sagi shows us that when we reprogram our minds and surround ourselves with greatness, we are able to withstand any storm that comes against us. In those moments of suffering, we find our greatest triumphs.   Resource Mentioned: Fish Out of Water by Calvin Wayman (Check out when I interviewed Calvin here!) 33rd Episode’s Show Notes Michael Stelzner founded Social Media Examiner in 2009, and his biggest success was the Social Media Marketing World Conference. Jeff Bullas’s blog receives over 5 million visitors a year. David Beebe  Is an Emmy-winning Branded Content Producer, Keynote Speaker, and Content Decoded. Jeremiah Gardner has been featured in Forbes, The Huffington Post, Entrepreneur Magazine, Lifehacker, and The Guardian. Mike Allton is a Content Marketing Practitioner, an award-winning Blogger and an Author. John Nemo is a Bestselling Author who wrote 7 books, a former Associated Press Reporter, Award-Winning PR Director and Social Media Consultant. These are the most successful people I have chosen to share their key success factors with you. Hello, Reach or Miss listeners. It’s almost impossible to tell what exactly makes a successful entrepreneurial brand so successful. However, I discovered that when we dig deep, all of the leading entrepreneurs have the one key success factor that works for them. I’ve chosen 6 successful guests to share their 8 key factors of success, which can be implemented by any entrepreneur that is looking to break their own records and become a market leader and a successful entrepreneur.  The one key success factor   Michael Stelzner Michael Stelzner is the founder of Social Media Examiner, author of the books, Launch and Writing White Papers, and the man behind Social Media Marketing World–the industry’s largest conference. He’s also the host of the Social Media Marketing podcast, founder of the Social Media Marketing Society, and host of the weekly Social Media Marketing Talk Show. There was a very clear motto in Michael Stelzner’s interview. When I asked Michael about his best advice for entrepreneurs and new small business owners, he had a clear answer: I think that when you get started, you really need to talk to a lot of people to really understand what their problems are. That could be through going to an event where a lot of people that meet your customers happen to be, and talking with them to understand what the customers’ problems are. If you already have some people in an email list, you can send an email to them, asking them questions, to understand what their challenges are. I think it’s the number one way that anybody can be successful. A lot of times we think that everyone is like us, which is totally not true, and we say “if everyone is like me, then they would be interested in that,” and then we just throw it out to the world and hope it sticks. Michael Stelzner’s one key success factor I would have to say truly knowing who our audience is and giving them exactly what they want, for free, over and over again.   Jeff Bullas Jeff is a digital entrepreneur, marketing blogger, keynote speaker, digital strategist, consultant, and bestselling author. He works with companies and executives to grow their online businesses through social, digital, and marketing automation. His blog receives over 5 million visitors a year and is found at jeffbullas.com (http://www.jeffbullas.com) . He has spent most of his business career involved with information technologies, telecommunications, and the web. For Jeff Bullas, starting his social media career was a result of four different influences that happen around the same time:  He was looking for a new career path. Jeff told me he read David Meerman Scott’s book, The New Rules of Marketing and PR, in 2008. Meerman talked about the power of content to attract the audience instead of having to go out and chase them and it sounded like a good idea to me because most businesses use cold calls.. He came upon Tim Ferries, who he worked for and Tim Ferries liked the idea. The last piece of inspiration was reading a blog post of HubSpot saying that if you don’t have a clue of what to start a business on then start a blog… “For me,”...

Over the last several years, the podcasting industry has grown significantly. More entrepreneurs are considering launching a podcast, but many become overwhelmed by the amount of time involved in planning, researching, and finally launching on the platform. In many ways, I felt the exact same way. I first got the idea to launch a podcast about two years ago, but the idea of creating a new content strategy seemed overwhelming. That is, until I attended the Social Media Marketing World Conference this year. At the conference, I heard many inspiring stories from people like you and me who have taken the leap of faith, launched a podcast, and are now sharing their experiences with the world! LinkedInformed Podcast. The LinkedIn Show

Welcome to episode 154, it’s been a tricky week this week, I had planned an interview with an Italian LinkedIn trainer to tackle the important subject of multi-lingual profiles but due to a combination of illness and power cuts, I had to postpone that! Instead I decided to cover a subject I am very enthusiastic about - research, specifically researching people. But first….. Interesting Stuff I saw This Week LinkedIn’s founder Reid Hoffman has been wondering what to do with himself since he found the the company he had a major stake in had been sold for $26.2B…..tough life! Anyway new parent Microsoft have come to the rescue and offered him a role on their main board. Personally, if I had $2.8B coming my way soon, I think I could find something better to do with my time! The Mission Continues: Joining the Microsoft Board Mobile Update LinkedIn have updated their mobile app. As is the norm, the app store information on the new update was full of interesting facts (note the contrast to Facebook)! Instead we have to try to figure out the changes for ourselves although they did announce in their blog that the new version now has profile picture edit options; There are some other notable changes. The ‘Me’ menu has disappeared….wait! I thought they redesigned the desktop experience to be more in line with mobile…but now they are dropping the Me menu from mobile?!! This was how the menu looked before the update; This is how it looks now As you can see, the Me menu has been replaced with jobs (boo hiss!). So how do you get to the profile edit page? …You now have to tap on your profile pic, top left as shown above. They have also improved the controls you have over your feed. Now when tapping on the edit link (see below) you get more options. One of these options is ‘Improve my feed’ This isn’t new but it then provides another new option ‘Clean my feed’ I wonder how it decides who is high up on this list…perhaps it is those you have engaged with the least? Have you noticed any other changes? LinkedIn Warn Cheaters! LinkedIn are sending out emails to users who they spot are logging into another persons account, this currently only seems to happen when they are a Sales Navigator or Recruiter Lite subscriber. I can only assume this means they are tracking IP addresses. A listener sent me this screenshot of an email they received recently I Know You…..Profile Research There are so many things you can find out about someone from their profile. In this section I talk in more details about; Contact & Personal Info Summary Highlights Articles Activity Experience Recommendations Psychometric assessment - CrystalKnows.com No episode next week (probably) I think it’s likely that I won’t get an episode out next week as I will be networking and learning like crazy at the Social Media Marketing World Conference in sunny San Diego….can’t wait!

The Superheroes of Marketing Podcast | Content Marketing | Lead Generation | Social Media Marketing

Pinterest has changed a lot recently - the largest change has been to Smartfeed. It dramatically impacts marketers and users, alike. We're so thrilled to speak with Vincent Ng of MCNG Marketing - he's great at keeping up with the latest Pinterest news, especially where it comes to keeping up on search changes which is why we are so happy to have him! What is SmartFeed? How Has Pinterest Changed? Pinterest's Smartfeed is somewhat like the Facebook news feed. Pinterest watches what you pin, repin, and like and shows you more of that type of content. And yes, that has meant on occasion that pinning a funny pin means all you'll see are goofy memes for a while. The hiccups appear to be clearing, however! This also means that you no longer see all pins from all the people you follow in chronological order, and of course that people may not see your pins immediately. This also means that the more activity on your pins (repins and likes), the more likely it is to continue to show up for more and more people. Sounds just like Facebook, doesn't it? Vincent has noticed a lot of fresh content appearing at the top of the Pinterest smart feed, while I've noticed a lot of older content again and again, especially with infographics! If your content is getting pinned a lot, consider creating multiple images to freshen things up. Right click here to download the mp3 file to your desktop What Does a Perfectly Searchable Pin Look Like? Create a gorgeous photo that people want to reshare. Use a vertical photo. Use keywords! Don't just put in “shoes” – give more detail. People search for “blue wedding shoes,” not shoes! Encourage click-throughs with your quality design and your descriptions. Wait, pins are being found on Google? Yup! Accounts, boards, and pins are showing up in search engine results. Concentrate on good long-tail keywords and use those in your descriptions. The Men Are Arriving on Pinterest! There are more male Pinterest users than subscribers of GQ and Sports Illustrated combined. To think that men aren't using it is “Absurd!” Agreed, Vincent. Pinterest is really working hard to get men to Pinterest, so it watches your pin activity and tries to adapt your search results based on whether it thinks you are male or female. You can also select gender when you sign up, which will certainly impact your results. How Are Men Using Pinterest? Think of how they shop. They're not usually out to bargain-hunt or to browse, but they go when they have a purpose rather than casual scanning. Think of it as a nicer way to keep bookmarks of items or information for future reference. Is it More Difficult to Succeed on Pinterest Now Than a Few Years Ago? Sure. People who have been on Pinterest a while, have more repins and likes, so their content tends to rise to the top with smart feed. Even if you're just starting out, though – it's such a great traffic driver. How Much Time Will I Have to Spend on Pinterest Marketing? Vincent recommends starting slow, maybe pinning once week or so. I counter that if you want it to work and get the encouragement to continue. Use a scheduler, and don't worry about having to deal with lots of comments. Just pin great stuff. What Happened to Affiliate Links? Power bloggers who were making big money have seen their income dry up as Pinterest is removing affiliate links. While this may not impact the average user, it does provide a good reminder that none of us should be building our house on someone else's land. What About the Pinterest Buy It Button? Pinterest is already a big driver of sales. It's looking to become a serious ecommerce player. So, if you sell items online, stay tuned!!! About Vincent Ng Vincent Ng is the founder of MCNG Marketing, and the author of Pinterest to Profits with Pintalysis and the host of the Pinterest podcast, Pictures to Profits. He'll be speaking about Pinterest at the upcoming Social Media Marketing World Conference in San Diego. Follow Vincent on Twitter Connect on LinkedIn Follow on Pinterest
