Mark shares his unique approach to writing—how each of his books is inspired by real problems facing marketers—and discusses the existential challenges and opportunities posed by AI-driven marketing. Discover how both brands and individuals can stand out in an age of overwhelming content, why out-humaning AI is the key to survival, and what it means to be “audacious” in a world often dominated by the dull and predictable. From tangible examples, like the unforgettable fiberglass pig in a barbecue joint and Liquid Death's disruptive branding, to innovative uses of AI and QR codes, Mark offers practical strategies for earning attention, regardless of budget. He also tackles the importance of organizational culture, the role of fear in stifling creativity, and the critical connection between personal branding and professional audacity. Today, Mark joins Sales Lead Dog for a second time to talk about his recent book, "Belonging to the Brand: Why Community is the Last Great Marketing Strategy." Before the Covid pandemic, Mark predicted that the final frontier of marketing is community, and now, post-pandemic and in our current world, building community has become even more essential. In today's episode, Mark speaks about how to build authentic communities by examining your company's culture and community leadership. Join us to learn about community, the last great marketing strategy. Mark W. Schaefer is a globally-recognized author, keynote speaker, futurist, and business consultant who blogs at {grow} — one of the top five marketing blogs of the world. He teaches graduate marketing classes at Rutgers University and has written 10 best-selling books. Mark's new book Belonging to the Brand: Why Community is the Last Great Marketing Strategy describes an essential new path to connect to customers in the modern digital world. His many global clients include Pfizer, Cisco, Dell, Adidas, and the US Air Force. He has been a keynote speaker at prestigious events all over the world, including SXSW, Marketing Summit Tokyo, and the Institute for International and European Affairs. Mark has appeared as a guest on media channels such as CNN, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and CBS News. Quotes: “Put down your algorithms for a minute, put down your automation for a minute. And let's look at what human beings really want. Let's remind ourselves what marketing and sales are supposed to do. And one of the chapters was about belonging and community. When I finished writing the book, I thought, that is the most important chapter in the book, that is the future of marketing. When all this other spammy stuff starts to fade away, we're still going to have each other, we're still going to have community. And that's what's that's really going to be the future.” (2:00-2:36) “This book is about creating community or considering community, because it is the greatest overlooked sales and marketing opportunity in the history of sales and marketing opportunities.” (4:20-4:33) “Most communities fail. And the reason that they fail, the number one reason that they fail, is because they're designed to sell things.” (10:47-10:59) “What can you do in this world, as a company, that you could do better? If you had customers along the ride with you? What do you want to be known for 10 years from now? What's your legacy? What would happen if we brought our customers along with us and actually let them lead the thing? That's where the magic starts to happen.” (12:09-12:31) “The very first question you have to ask is, do we have a culture that can sustain this?” (21:21-21;27) “Community is an implied social contract. What other marketing or sales promotion do we have that's an implied social contract? There isn't one.” (21:49-22:02) Links: Mark Schaefer: LinkedIn Business Grow Website Amazon: “Belonging to the Brand: Why Community is the Last Great Marketing Strategy” Empellor CRM Sales Lead Dog Podcast Empellor CRM LinkedIn #sales #podcast #change #salesleaddog #leadership #leadershipdevelopment #marketing #Belongingtothebrand #community

Context & Clarity Podcast with Jeff Echols and Katharine MacPhail
Where do your best ideas come from? Many of my best ideas pop into my head when I'm in the shower? Does that ever happen to you? It's a topic that Mark W. Schaefer writes about in his most recent book, "Cumulative Advantage," and it's the title of one of my favorite reads from this past year, "Where Do Good Ideas Come From," by Steven Johnson. When I started reading 20-30 books every year, I realized that my brain started connecting lots of dots between things written in this book and things written in a different book on a completely different topic. I credit that consumption to much of my idea generation.
To succeed and stand out in this very busy world requires more than just greatness, it takes momentum. This is what Mark's new book is trying to teach us. The highlight of this episode is centered on his new best-selling book, Cumulative Advantage. Listen to this podcast now and learn what inspired him to write the book, what the book is all about, and how it can help an individual in succeeding even without having safety nets or having millions, just pure momentum! Mark is Top 10 most re-tweeted marketing authorities in the world. He was also listed as one of the Top 10 authorities on Social Selling by Forbes. Quotes "And so that was my journey is to go down this rabbit hole of what is really the system of momentum, what is the pattern of momentum, and how do we apply this in our businesses." (15:17-15:30) "It's not just about having an idea, momentum has to begin by pursuing that that idea by, by creating really a quest of this of this initial advantage." (20:37-20:50) "And here was the light bulb that went off influence on the internet is determined by who can move content, who can move ideas. That's if you can move, ideas, you move influence if you can do it a lot you're more influential, and I realized, wait a minute. He can measure influence, and we are on the brink of an entirely new marketing opportunity." Marcus Cauchi’s primary focus is to help technology companies to grow or turn them around which requires a complex combination of a good deal of hard thinking, the right systems, strategy, structure, people and partnerships. Getting to the root of the real problems and holding up a mirror to his clients, Marcus focuses on their vision, clarity and purpose and asks them three key questions: Where? Why? How? It’s Marcus's job to both challenge them and challenge their thinking. KEY TAKEAWAY “Take time for planning. Take time to appreciate what you've got, the people around you, who you've got and just take it easier on yourself. Stop judging yourself, that prejudgment, that prejudice that you have towards yourself. That's lethal. And you're not always right. That's the lesson that's taken me a while to learn and I think it's dangerous to live in a bubble.” BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS* Marketing Rebellion by Mark W. As I was preparing for the talk I gave last week about voice search and the shifts in how our customers are seeking information about our products and services, I created a document of bonus content. It included references to several interesting marketing statistics and trends and a few points mentioned by other presenters during the 2 1/2-day module, Leading the Strategic Enterprise. As a news brief, I've recorded part of the bonus content here for you in Episode 15 of Agile Digital Business. This episode is 6:30 minutes in length. Here are the time codes and themes of the episode: 0:34 Introduction to this brief, news episode that features part of the content that I shared with students at the end of my session last week as bonus content. I was teaching about voice search and preparing our businesses for the digital realm. :49 Mention of the book by Mark W. Schaefer, Marketing Rebellion: The Most Human Company Wins 1:02 Reference to Episode 12 of the podcast where I provide a short commentary about Mark's book, Marketing Rebellion. 1:33 Maintain a customer focus 1:43 Insight from Jagdish Sheth who was a guest on Episode 190 of the Marketing Book Podcast, hosted by Douglas Burdett. 1:59 I mention the book, The 4 As of Marketing by Jagdish Sheth and Rajendra Sisodia. The 4As are Acceptability, Affordability, Accessibility and Awareness. Douglas Burdett and Jagdish Sheth talk about the 4As and how they differ from the 4 Ps - product, place, promotion and price. There was discussion about how the 4Ps can sometimes be internally focused. 2:30 Jagdish mentions the trend of having a marketing officer report in to a finance position. He talks about the differences when a CMO reports in to the CEO. 3:11 Another section of the Bonus Content is about the question of "who is in charge of our digital footprint?" 3:23 "Digital disrespects departments," according to international consultant and instructor, Taru Jain, CEO of Futuremarketer. He teaches in the Digital Marketing Certificate program offered by Rutgers University. He regularly posts interesting content on digital marketing and future trends in LinkedIn. I suggest that you follow him in the social media platform to keep up with the news he is sharing on a regular basis. 3:59 Joe Urbany, professor of marketing at the University of Notre Dame, taught in a professional development session for executives last week at the university. Books 4:27Marketing Rebellion: The Most Human Company Wins by Mark W. Schaefer – I read this book in Spring 2019, and took copious notes. Mark was the closing keynote at Social Media Marketing World conference in 2019. I recommend that every marketer and every business leader who has a marketing leader reporting to them should read this book. We are in a different marketing environment today than even just a few years ago. Years of marketing experience in business (or academia) and old methods for buying and placing digital advertising, and ways of engaging with customers are causing customers to block ads and/or to seek education and entertainment that is ad-free. If you aren’t already changing your plans currently to align with the new marketing revolution, this book will cause you to re-think what you’ve been doing in your marketing efforts. It’s above the ads; it’s above the snippets. It’s the position used in voice search. 17:35Screen Search – A screen search is the type of Internet searching that was previously thought of as traditional. It involves typing of questions, key words or phrases in a search engine such as Google or Bing. A method of typing and a screen are involved. The search results are displayed in multiples per page. 17:58SEM – Search engine marketing 18:02 SEO – Search engine optimization SERP – Search engine results page* 18:05 Skill (Amazon), Action (Google), Capsule (Bixby for Samsung) – Amazon calls these “voice-driven capabilities” that can run on their respective platforms. Google calls these Actions. For Bixby, they are capsules. Consider the Amazon Alexa Skill for an example. I’ve created an Alexa Skill for my podcast, Agile Digital Business, to make it easy for Amazon device users to ask Alexa to play my Flash Briefing for the podcast. The Alexa Skill can be found on search in the Amazon Skill store. If a user knows the name of the Skill they are looking for, they can request it of the assistant by saying, “Enable [name of Skill].” For the podcast, I set the Alexa Skill up with the blue print provided for a Flash Briefing. It saved me from having to code, and it enables a user to search in their Alexa app for the specific Skill to add to their Flash Briefing.* 19:05 Smart Speaker – A smart speaker is also known as a voice-activated assistant, and several other terms. Examples include the Echo by Amazon (assistant is Alexa) or the Home by Google. Sonic Branding – Phrases such as “tone of the copy,” “find your voice,” and “it should sound like our brand,” have a literal meaning in this era of voice search. Sonic branding is what your brand sounds like as it is responding, verbally, to your customers.* 19:22 Utterance – This is the term used to describe the vocalizations a user has with a voice-activated assistant. 19:31 Voice – Any interaction that allows you to control a computer program using natural speech. 19:40 Voice Commerce – Transactions for goods and services conducted via voice search and commands given to the assistant in the smart speaker. Users can connect their accounts such as Amazon. 19:55 Voice First – The phrase, voice first, refers to the first in a string of searches, starting with a voice search, that a user conducts. They may go to a screen search after getting an initial response from an assistant. 20:11 Voice Search – A voice search is a question asked by a person talking to their digital assistant (voice-activated speaker or voice-activated assistant) such as Siri or Alexa. The assistant uses meta data to return one result that best aligns with the question that was asked. 20:46 Voice User Interface (VUI) – This is an interface that allows a person using voice for search to interact with a device when there isn’t a screen involved. 21:00 BIO – Vickie Maris Voice first, voice platforms and preparing content so that it is more discoverable in voice search are topics that have the focus of Vickie Maris, author, speaker, digital marketer and idea coach. I learned a ton talking with Mark Schaefer about his industry-shifting book Marketing Rebellion. It's the must-read marketing book for 2019 and beyond. About the Book: Are you overwhelmed by the breathtaking rate of change in the business world? Are confusing consumer trends, the unrelenting pace of technology, and the breakneck speed of digital marketing making you feel irrelevant and lost? Path-finding author Mark Schaefer provides an achievable and realistic framework to help you stay ahead of the curve by re-imagining marketing in a world where hyper-empowered consumers drive the business results. Marketing Rebellion will teach you: How cataclysmic consumer trends are a predictable result of a revolution that started 100 years ago. I love this episode because I really love finding out from my guests how passionate they are about what they are doing. Building and maintaining a business is just crazy and Mark built his around marketing purely because he read something which resonated with him at a young age. Using a traditional concept which somehow seems to get lost in the intrusive world of marketing, Mark teaches us to use a human centered approach to converse to our customers and have the respect to listen to what they want. In This Episode: Values Based Marketing Technology Human Centered Approach Positive Polarization Customer Control “Marketing is a combination of psychology, sociology, and anthropology and I thought that this is the coolest thing ever, I want to do that. Marketing is all things human and it was so interesting to me and I kind of got hooked.” - Mark “It's that kind of thing that marketing has shifted so much and I kind of feel like sometimes the technology that we use has made us so Uber connected, that we're actually disconnected.” - Jess “Well, I think there's a couple of steps that you can take, number one is to look at what you're doing in your business and examine your marketing and if you're doing anything that people hate, stop it.“ - Mark “Don't do what your customers hate. I think, arguably, there's a big case of polarization in marketing that's always a tricky one because ultimately, in doing the very best marketing we can to get ideal customers, we're going to turn some people off.“ - Jess “ I just saw so many people seem to be stuck with where they were in marketing and as I started to get into the research, I realized that the reason they're stuck is because the world has changed so much and so fast that we don't even really recognize that this change has taken place.“ - Mark Mark W Schaefer - Website Marketing Rebellion by Mark W Schaefer Book - Link Smart Leaders Sell https://smartleaderssell.com/ Join my new programme, EVOLVE: https://smartleaderssell.com/evolve/ The Dotties https://smartleaderssell.com/the-dotties/ More Jess! http://bit.ly/SLSGroup https://jessicalorimer.com/supersize-your-sales https://jessicalorimer.com/list-building-legend https://www.instagram.com/jess_lorimer/ Content Disclaimer The information contained above is provided for information purposes only. This week’s guest is Mark W. Schaefer. Mark is a globally recognized educator, business consultant, and author. Now Executive Director of U.S.-based Schaefer Marketing Solutions, Mark has worked in global sales, public relations, and marketing for nearly thirty years. His latest book ‘Marketing Rebellion – why the most human company will win’ provides an achievable and realistic framework to help you stay ahead of the curve by reimagining marketing. Why should businesses be built on human impressions instead of advertising impressions, what is driving this change? Mark and Geoff discuss how marketers should adjust to the changing tides as well as overall consumer perceptions and what it means to surrender control to the customer. It can be difficult to refrain from turning every piece of content your business creates into a branded overt marketing opportunity. However, the key to succeeding amidst this upheaval is creating an emotional connection with consumers, and that often means leaving the traditional sales pitch at the door. With customer loyalty and trust decreasing (and in some places gone completely), The onus is on the marketers to cater to the human needs of the consumer. Mark offers some useful tips on how to communicate in a more human way and talks about how we can alleviate the tangled mess that is the customer journey. We also look at a few case studies of companies with a human, forward thinking brand, in Jeff Bezos with Amazon and Tesla with Elon Musk. What you will learn in this episode: • What is the ‘Marketing Rebellion’ • Understanding the chasm between consumer and business perceptions • How to create loyalty with the empowered consumer • The difference between personal and personalization • How to communicate with your customers in a more human way Links from Today's Episode: Mark’s Website https://businessesgrow.com/ Marketing Rebellion – the most human company wins https://businessesgrow.com/rebellion/ The Business Grow Blog https://businessesgrow.com/blog/ The Marketing Companion Podcast https://businessesgrow.com/podcast-the-marketing-companion-2/ Contact Mark https://businessesgrow.com/contact/ Ready to grow your business in the new year? “...Being hungry and wanting to win is important. But all that ambition should be equally balanced with patience... and patience is hard.” I just couldn’t stop watching this DailyVee 061 short video advice: Gary Vaynerchuk's advice DailyVee 061 (https://twitter.com/garyvee?cn=ZmxleGlibGVfcmVjcw==&refsrc=email) Being more patient means playing the long game. It means being customer focused, not to mention listening and reacting to markets’ needs and changes. It’s a chaotic world, the journey is hectic, and many entrepreneurs just jump on any new opportunity or challenge. One of the first questions I ask my guests on the Reach or Miss podcast is 'what would be their best advice to entrepreneurs regarding customers’ focus, marketing, and sales?" In this episode, I collected five of the best tips from my guests, market leaders, and successful entrepreneurs. Raoul Davis Raoul Davis is CEO of Ascendant Group Branding, which helps CEOs, retired athletes, and executive leaders increase their top line revenue. Ascendant’s integrated model includes brand strategy, public relations, book deals, social media, and brand design. Davis has been invited to small business forums at the White House and is considered to be an expert on CEO and executive branding. Raoul’s career My journey started back in my college studies, where I was involved in all the parties on campus until a friend of mine told me I have to run for the vice president election of the campus activity board. Then I decided to develop some leadership skills. Then I learned my first lesson about branding. I thought the fact I did a good job is enough to get me elected to a position in the student government. And I lost badly. The next year I made sure everyone saw what I did, and I won. That’s the value of branding. It’s great to be good at what you are doing; it’s even better to be seen. That’s the lesson that I learned. Then I got an internship and started booking speakers to universities across the country and became the best seller of the organization. So, by the time I was about to finish grad school, two of the clients approached me and said ‘we would love to be your first clients; why don’t you open your own business?’ And that’s how I started. I founded my company in 2004, and I started up managing speakers. While working with them, we realized that their brand was what most affected how often they spoke. So, we got into personal branding, focused on PR, and in time, we started to work with more CEOs and built our model around CEO branding because no one was doing it at the time. Raoul’s best advice about approaching customers My best advice would be the importance of achieving clarity. You need to be clear about what you are offering and why should people care about it. Any entrepreneur should find a story that will differentiate them from their competitors. The next piece of advice I’ve chosen to share with you is from Mark Schaefer. Mark Schafer is one of the two leading marketing influencers today, and this is, by far, the top piece of advice given by my guests. Mark W. Schaefer Mark W. He has appeared as a guest on media channels such as CNN, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and CBS News. Most passionate about I’m a person who is always looks forward, so I’m always in the process of reinvention. I tend to be almost obsessed with the big problems in our business. When I wrote my last book, Known, it was about how creating an effective, powerful personal brand is really the only sustainable, competitive advantage we can have. I was addressing the question: Could anybody become known? The question I’m wrestling with now is that everywhere I go, marketing seems to be stuck. There are a few symptoms: People are over whelmed by technology in marketing They are over using technology in marketing They’re stuck in ineffective patterns Many of the companies today, either big or small have social media departments that were established in 2010 to 2014, and I can assure you that almost none of the outputs these teams are producing have been updated. So much has been changed with social media during the last years. The idea that I have is that marketing is too tech-centric instead of human-centric. We don’t want to talk with our customers anymore; we just want to monitor them on Twitter. We automate everything and we are loosing our hearts, our souls, and our way. Marketing is sick right now! What is marketing, according to Mark? Get out and talk to customers. The truth is out there. Marketing is finding un-met and under-served needs and creating demand to those needs in a unique way. Hopefully by establishing an emotional connection. I love working with entrepreneurs and startup communities; I love their energy. But the biggest frustration I have is that marketing is almost always overlooked. Startups and entrepreneurs are in love with an idea, or with a business model. They think that marketing is DIY (Do It Yourself), they think that they can read some blog posts and do it. But marketing is about finding and acquiring customers. If you don’t have customers, you don’t have a business. Marketing is HARD! It’s really hard. But you’ve got to address it. And if you aren’t a natural marketer or trained in marketing, you’ve got to get help! Because marketing is really the centerpiece of your business; no matter how good your idea is, no matter how much you are in love with it, if you don’t have customers you are not going to have a business! Mark’s best advice about approaching customers I asked a young marketer that wanted my advice whether he talked with the company’s customers, or joined their sales people? He was already six months in that position and never talked with a single customer! You should talk with your customers and ask them: What do you love about your business? What do you hate about your business? What keeps you awake at night? How can we serve you better? Biggest failure with a customer It wasn’t necessarily a failure with my customers; it was a failure with me. I don’t enjoy selling and

Welcome to episode #560 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #560 - Host: Mitch Joel. Beyond the fact that I enjoy the vast amount of time that I get to personally spend with Tom Webster, he also happens to be one of the smartest (and most sarcastic) brains that I know (and love). He has spent well over two decades telling stories with numbers about consumer behaviour and media as the VP of Strategy at Edison Research (the company that provides all of the exit polling data for the networks during the U.S. elections and primaries). At Edison, he's also one of leads behind their long-standing, The Infinite Dial report, which is the longest-running research series examining consumer usage of digital and traditional media in America. Their 2017 report had some massive shifts, that make for a fascinating chat about the current state of media and future opportunities. With that, Tom is also the co-author of The Mobile Commerce Revolution, with Tim Hayden, and directed the research behind Jay Baer's bestselling business book, Hug Your Haters. If that were not enough, he blogs at Brand Savant and has a long-standing podcast that he co-hosts with Mark W. Schaefer called, The Marketing Companion. Enjoy the conversation... Welcome to episode #559 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #559 - Host: Mitch Joel. Some might say that Mark Schaefer was late to the game when it comes to social media and personal brand building. Still, in short order, he has built a substantive and valuable personal platform and engaged community. Mark is still an avid blogger (like me). He is a podcaster (check out The Marketing Companion). He is a professor of marketing at Rutgers. He is an active consultant. Mark is a passionate communicator about how marketing has changed, and where he thinks it's all going. He's written many successful business books (Return On Influence, The Tao Of Twitter, Born To Blog, Social Media Explained and The Content Code) and brings a wealth of real life experience to the discussion. His latest book, Known, digs deep into his blueprint for how individuals (and businesses) can use content to become more known to a broader audience and grow their customer base. Some might think that a new business book on the topic of personal branding in 2017 is a little after-the-fact (I did). Mark thinks he's tapped into something new and unique (he changed my mind). This is the time of year when everybody creates “prediction posts.” Here’s the number one marketing prediction seen everywhere: “This is the year of Facebook Live. Companies will move their content production to live video.” Mark W. Schaefer doesn’t agree. What’s the reason a company would NOT do live video? Legal constraints Cultural constraints Talent constraints Those obstacles don’t go away in a year, or even two years. Will there be an increase in live video? Of course. That seems like a pretty safe prediction. Will there be a transformation in 2017? No. It’s a couple of years away. Jimmy Graham, a professional football player for the New Orleans Saints, is up for salary arbitration. Why, you ask? Because Jimmy is typically lined up as a tight end, even though he's actually a wide receiver. The judge recently ruled against Graham, partly because his Twitter bio says he's a tight end for the Saints. This is extremely interesting because what you say about yourself matters. Are you really putting your best foot forward on your social media bios? Perhaps it's time to re-evaluate your persona online. Today's Sprout Social shout out goes to Mark W. Welcome to episode #414 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. What do you think the future of digital marketing holds? Mark W. Schaefer brought forward his own thoughts in a very smart blog post title, The future of digital marketing will be built on fun. If you're a frequent listener of the podcast, you know that Mark is a regular guest, insightful marketing professional (and professor) and passionate communicator about how marketing has changed. He's written many successful business books (Return On Influence, The Tao Of Twitter, Born To Blog and Social Media Explained) and brings a wealth of real life experience to the discussion. We look at the many revolutions that the Internet has brought to marketing, and jam on some ideas as to where this might all be going. It gets intense and it's all a little meta, but I do believe that we came to some solid future visioning. Enjoy the conversation... Mark W. Schaefer is a globally-recognized blogger, speaker, educator, business consultant, and author who blogs at {grow} – one of the top marketing blogs in the world. He teaches graduate marketing classes at Rutgers University and has written three best-selling books including The Tao of Twitter (the best-selling book on Twitter in the world) and Return On Influence, which was named one of the top business titles of the year by the American Library Association.
Welcome to episode #393 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. Here is the definition of Content Shock from Mark W. Schaefer: "Content Shock is the emerging marketing epoch defined when exponentially increasing volumes of content intersects our limited human capacity to consume it." In short, it's getting more and more expensive and difficult for brands to create content in a world where consumers have a finite time to consume it all. Do you believe in this or do you not? Schaefer presented this theory (something I have blogged about on countless occasions with my own spin) on his Grow Blog earlier this month. That blog post has since generated over 300 comments and tons of diverse feedback. Shel Holtz (famed communications professional and one of the voices behind the long-running podcast, For Immediate Release - The Hobson And Holtz Report) took exception to the theory of Content Shock in a blog post titled, Six Reasons There Will Be No Content Shock. It felt like this could be a very interesting three-way debate. I hope it doesn't disappoint. Enjoy the conversation... Welcome to episode #356 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. If you could choose one media channel to create and own, in the year 2013, would it be a blog? Personally, I still think that blogging is as fresh and powerful of a publishing medium as it ever has been. I also think that it is still very nascent in terms of opportunity for brands to create compelling content in a unique voice. Yes, I'm a die-hard evangelist for the platform, but it would not drive me to write a book about it. Well, it did for Mark W. Schaefer. If you're a frequent listener of the podcast, you know that Mark is a regular guest, insightful marketing professional (and professor) and passionate communicator about how marketing has changed. He's already written two very successful business books (Return On Influence and The Tao Of Twitter). In February, he published his latest book, Born To Blog - Building Your Blog For Personal And Business Success One Post At A Time, with co-author Stanford A. Smith. Mark wasn't an early adopter to blogging, but he is living proof that it is never too late to enter the fray and share. His blog, Grow, is not only immensely successful, but has community engagement that is off the charts. Take a listen to this show and decide for yourself if blogging could well be the "next big thing"... again. Enjoy the conversation... Welcome to episode #319 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. Mark W. Schaefer over at Grow Blog recently published his second book, Return On Influence - The Revolutionary Power of Klout, Social Scoring, and Influence Marketing, which dissects the fascinating world of social scoring an individual consumer's true influence in the online channels. Beyond that, he also wrote a contentious blog post titled, Is there anything new in blogging? No (I even responded over here: What's Next? It's You). As we frequently have debates and deep-dives on topics here at the Six Pixels of Separation Podcast, we felt that we could delve deeper into what blogging means in 2012 and how it can (and should evolve). It turns out that we're not the only ones who are thinking about the evolution of blogging and publishing. The day after we recorded this conversation, Twitter founders, Biz Stone and Ev Williams, announced the launch of Medium (and place where they hope to rethink the publishing through a new platform). Is blogging old news or is it still brand spanking new and in need of some evolution? Enjoy the conversation... Welcome to episode #308 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. Mark W. Schaefer over at Grow Blog recently published his second book, Return On Influence - The Revolutionary Power of Klout, Social Scoring, and Influence Marketing, which dissects the fascinating world of social scoring an individual consumer's true influence in the online channels. While this is already a very contentious issue, it seems like marketers are the first ones in the door on this. We see this as a prime opportunity to tip the scales by better understanding who is complaining about us and who is lauding the brands that we represent. At the same time, many marketers see Klout and the power to social score individuals as a great way to not only nurture our evangelists but uncover new ones. Whether or not you think that this is an idea that will stick, it's here... it's going to evolve and people like Mark think it's a pretty big deal. Enjoy the conversation... Welcome to episode #293 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. Mark W. Schaefer over at Grow Blog is about to publish his second book, Return On Influence - The Revolutionary Power of Klout, Social Scoring, and Influence Marketing, which dissects the fascinating world of scoring an individual consumer's true influence in the online channels. While this is already a very contentious issue, there's something bigger happening is our online world that bears reflection: what, exactly, is leadership? Is it how many people follow someone on Twitter? Is it the success of a Facebook campaign? What about a successful Blog? In this Podcast, Mark and I debate the merits of true marketing leadership and what brands need to know as they continue to struggle with success metrics and ROI. I should also mention that the audio conversation recorded a little strangely (so apologies for non-perfect audio quality). Enjoy the conversation... Welcome to episode #264 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. Mark W. Schaefer over at Grow Blog just published his first business book, The Tao of Twitter, so beyond a conversation about why the world needs another book about Twitter, we also spent a boatload of time discussing and dissecting power, influence and the Social Web. While you may have read or heard about this topic before, the landscape continues to evolve and we dive much deeper (well beyond the value of Klout scores and the ROI of a Facebook "like") into the murky waters of presumed compliance and more. Welcome to episode #250 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. I've never been one for acknowledging anniversaries in the digital channels (things like x amount of blog posts, podcasts or how many followers I have on Twitter). To be honest, I'm not even sure that having 250 episodes of a Podcast is all that big of a deal or something worth noting (I'm not keeping count - just having fun having weekly conversations about Marketing with some of the smartest people on the planet). Thankfully, Mark W. Schaefer over at Grow thought it was something worthy of mentioning and came up with the idea of interviewing me for this 250th episode. Admittedly, I was hesitant at first, but figured it could be fun to have the tables turned or to turn this episode a little upside down. Mark has become a good friend over the past while (and we have yet to meet in our "protein forms"!). It was a fun chat all about Marketing and the revolution that has taken place with some thoughts on the evolution as it continues to change. I hope you don't find this episode too narcissistic (it was not the intention). Enjoy the conversation... Welcome to episode #235 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. As I explained last week (more on that here: No Six Pixels Of Separation Podcast This Week), I had an amazing conversation with Mark W. Schaefer from the Grow Blog that covered topics like the power of Klout and the evolution of Marketing, Communications and Blogging in 2010. We even pushed out into this new year and discussed creativity, analytics and what might be in store for Social Media. The Skype line that we connected on sounded great, but there was a technical glitch and the audio file was unusable. Thankfully, Mark agreed to re-record our conversation and this is the result. Between us, this version came out much stronger than our original conversation, and I hope you'll agree. Enjoy the conversation... Welcome to episode #229 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. I don't think you should follow back everyone on Twitter who decides to follow you. It didn't seem like a big deal to say it. It turns out it was. Mark W. Schaefer (over at Grow) had a great Blog post titled, Bringing Down The Twitter Snobs, that ran contrary to a post I had published titled, Being A Twitter Snob Is A Good Thing. It's not the first time we've had discourse over a hot topic (in fact, we debated Ghost Blogging right here: SPOS #214 - The Ghost Blogging Debate With Mark W. Schaefer). I like debating Mark. He's not a Social Media Guru - and you know the kind of "guru" I am talking about. He's a professional and an educator with real experience and a great perspective on all things Marketing and Communications. As you can tell by the comments on both of our Blog posts, this is a hot topic. We decided to take the gloves off and discuss it, right here. Enjoy the conversation... Welcome to episode #214 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. If there's one debate that never gets tired, it's the one about Ghost Blogging. We've come to this strange intersection with Social Media where companies want to Blog, but they feel like their CEO (or others within the company) would best be served if that voice was created by a ghost writer. It's an issue that irritates me because I don't agree with it, but I do understand why businesses do it (hence my frustration). Mark W. Schaefer (over at Grow) had a great Blog post titled, Why It's Ridiculous To Argue About Ghost Blogging, that ran contrary to a post I had published titled, The Death of Social Media (which focused on executives now hiring individuals to tweet for them on Twitter). While the comments and conversations were/are fantastic, we decided to have a Skype chat/debate about the topic. Here it is. Enjoy the conversation...
