Zach was burned out after a decade of working at top roles in Coinbase, Square and Brex. He quit with no startup idea-- and then, he went right back in. Given their background, Zach and his co-founder quickly raised an $8M seed round to build an NFT-related product in Web3.One month later, they completely abandoned their idea. They realized it was never going to work. Then, the floor fell from underneath them. FTX went bankrupt. SVB fell apart. They took punches to the face for the first 6 months straight. But, when everyone was paying attention to Gen AI in late 2022, Zach kept going deep in Web3. He noticed stablecoins were growing but there was no platform for developers to build with. So he built Bridge, a Stripe-like API for stablecoins. The first months post-launch were underwhelming-- until they landed a fast-growing customer. From then on, the next year was exceptional 10x+ growth. Then Stripe noticed them.In Oct 2024, they were acquired for $1.1B. Just 2.5 years after he started. Here's the story of how it all happened. Why you should listen:Why even $1B+ exits still feel like rollercoasters from the inside. How to quickly abandon ideas and pivot to what truly matters. How they found a massive opportunity where no one else was looking. Why starting outside of the Bay Area was critical to their success.Keywordsstartup, billion-dollar exit, stablecoins, investor relations, crypto, fintech, market dynamics, entrepreneurship, pivot, challenges, stable coins, startup journey, acquisition, fintech, market resilience, product market fit, Pablo Srugo, Bridge, Stripe, entrepreneurshipTimestamps(00:00:00) Intro(00:2:46) Starting at the Worst Time(00:8:56) The Emotions on Pivoting a Month After Raising(00:11:44) Pivoting(00:18:24) Leaving Brex(00:20:36) Working on Something Out of Trend(00:28:34) The Core Beliefs of Bridge(00:32:56) Launching & First Customer(00:38:57) Sometimes you Can't Think Too Much(00:42:29) Series A(00:44:24) The Acquisition(00:49:05) The Feeling of Exiting for a Billion(00:52:24) One Piece of AdviceSend me a message to let me know what you think!

The January Art of Reading book club features Laureate for Irish Fiction Colm Tóibín in conversation with writer Eimear McBride about her book A Girl is a Half-formed Thing. In describing his idea for the Art of Reading Book Club series Colm Tóibín said: “Our experience of reading became more intense and more essential during the lockdown. Although reading is mainly done in silence and when alone, it includes a sense of community, an idea of sharing. Readers want to talk about the books they like, to think about the internal workings of a novel or a story, and exchange ideas on books, all to enrich the experience of reading. Reading, as much as writing, is an art. It requires a creative response to the text. No books matters unless someone is reading it. The purpose of the Art of Reading Book Club is to deepen the idea of a community of readers and to recognize the vitality and excitement in the act of reading and thinking about books.” Eimear McBride is the author of three novels: ‘Strange Hotel', ‘The Lesser Bohemians' and ‘A Girl is a Half-formed Thing'. She held the inaugural Creative Fellowship at the Beckett Research Centre, University of Reading which resulted in the performance work ‘Mouthpieces' - later broadcast by RTE Radio. Her first full length non-fiction work ‘Something Out of Place: Women & Disgust' was published in 2021, while her first foray into film writing and direction ‘A Very Short Film About Longing,' produced by DMC and BBC Film, has recently been completed. She is the recipient of the Women's Prize for Fiction, Goldsmiths Prize, James Tait Black Memorial Prize, Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize, Desmond Eliot Prize and the Kerry Prize. She grew up in the west of Ireland and now lives in London. The Last Handful of Clover - a supernatural thriller by Wess Mongo Jolley
The Last Handful of Clover: Book One - The Hereafter Chapter 28: Something Out of Balance * * * ABOUT THE STORY: THREE DAYS AFTER HE WAS MURDERED, RICHARD PRATT BEGAN TO FEEL MUCH BETTER... A seemingly random act of violence propels Professor Richard Pratt into The Hereafter. It is a strange, muted, netherworld of the dead -- a world in which he is forced to bear witness to the loss and suffering of the man he left behind, and to the rapid demise of the city he called home. And when the other denizens of his ghostly realm begin to enact a brutal revenge on the world of the living, it is only Richard Pratt that can save them. With the help of a barefoot 15-year-old boy from the old West and an ancient Goshute wise woman, Richard Pratt sets out to save the man he loves, Salt Lake City, and his own wounded soul. Together, they must face a ferocious enemy bent on the complete destruction of a great American city. An enemy with his fingers deep in Richard's shameful past. The Last Handful of Clover is a sweeping supernatural thriller about love, loss, regret, and redemption. It is a novel of terror, in which one man is called upon to face the sins of his past in order to save the future for the man he loves, and a city of over a million innocent souls. Peopled by a cast of unforgettable characters, The Last Handful of Clover is an epic hero's journey into darkness. From the remote Montana wilderness of 1810 to a secret chemical weapons laboratory under the Utah desert, the scope of The Last Handful of Clover is breathtaking, and lays bare the desperate longings, universal loss, and inevitable anguish of being human. * * * The Last Handful of Clover is a supernatural thriller by Wess Mongo Jolley, narrated by the author. This week our guest is the brilliant Eimear McBride, discussing her first book of non-fiction Something Out of Place. Beginning with the sentiment of disgust with which, McBride argues, society regards and treats women, it develops into a blistering and astute polemic against the patriarchal framework that oppresses, coerces, sculpts controls and all too often ends the lives of half the world's population. Love to all my people. Let's meet some legends, now. A woman who took in the children of black families who had to work, and ended up raising 40 and holding hundreds more: Mother Hale. A girl who couldn't walk in childhood, but within 7 years was running in the Olympic games: Wilma Rudolph. A girl who saved up pennies to buy a guitar, and went on to write some of America's most popular folk music: Elizabeth Cotten. All of these women started with next-to-nothing in their respective lines of work, and through their grit and sense of mission, succeeded, possibly influencing countless Americans along the way. This is: Something Out of Nothing. As a bonus, I'm adding the unbelievable story of the civil rights giant you may not have heard about: a schoolteacher named Septima Clark. Her story is called “Everything”.

Every year, Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers runs a contest for unpublished writers. It's called Colorado Gold and the winners are announced during the annual conference (coming up this weekend, Sept. 6 through 9). There are five categories in the contest and, for each of the categories there are five finalists and, as a result, 25 finalists in all. This year, savvy contest watchers will notice one name that pops up three times: Joy Meredith. Joy has two finalists in the women’s fiction category and one in mainstream. The titles? Something Out of Nothing. That’s the mainstream entry. And Old Cravings and, finally, McSham and the Whim Wham—those are the entries in Women’s Fiction. But neat categories are not exactly Joy Meredith’s cup of tea, as you will hear. She is eager to turn genres on their head and look for twists and unusual approaches. Joy Meredith loves writing books about ordinary people in the midst of extraordinary circumstances. She believes allowing different foods to touch on her plate is a big no-no, but she’s fearless when it comes to mixing genres, with romance at the heart of all her stories. She lives outside Denver with her English husband, whom she married for his James Bond accent, and their three amazing children. To reflect her active lifestyle, Joy owns two pugs. She works as an elementary school librarian helping children track down books almost exclusively about sharks or princesses. Or shark princesses. In her free time, she likes reading (duh), printing off healthy recipes she has no intention of cooking, and playing nerdy German-style board games. The third leg of The Organizational Triangle® is Something In, Something Out. By being thoughtful anytime you bring something new into your life, you will reduce any future organizing you need to do. Something In, Something Out also has a macro application and that where we use this rule to set ourselves free from oppressive legislation and lawmakers who would use their power for their own interests rather than furthering the common good.
