This week on Full Time, Meg Linehan is joined by The Athletic's Barcelona-based Spanish soccer writer Laia Cervello to discuss the state of the country's women's national team. On November 1, Netflix released a documentary titled 'It's All Over: The Kiss That Changed Spanish Football' about Spain's 2023 World Cup triumph and the aftermath that brought the federation into disrepute. But, 16 months later, the Full Time podcast wonders, has Spanish football really changed all that much? Cervello sheds light on how new head coach Montse Tomé is perceived, what sort of investment (or lack thereof) is happening in Liga F, as well as breaking down the context behind some of the key scenes from the Netflix documentary. PLUS: It has been a very busy week in the NWSL, with stadium issues escalating in Boston and end-of-season roster retention lists due at the league HQ. Spain's Me Too movement started back in 2016, after a horrifying rape case that shocked the nation and mobilized its men and women. But the history of Spanish women's struggle for equal rights dates back to the mid-19th century. And as you will note in this conversation, it's a history that is closely tied to the struggle for freedom, to different political movements and their priorities, to different regimes and republics, and also to world events and global movements, such as the suffrage movement in Britain and America, and Fascism and Nazism in Italy and Germany, respectively. In this episode, I ask my guest, Dr. Marta del Moral, the following questions: How did women's conditions and rights in Spain from the 19th century to 1933 compare to other European countries? Were women deemed intellectually equal to men? And if so, were they given the same rights? When did Spanish women gain the right to vote and how did they effectively lose it? How did Franco's regime impact women's rights and conditions? What is (was) permiso marital? How were rapists treated in Spain? What was the punishment for a man who killed his adulterous wife? How did women's conditions and rights change after democracy returned to Spain starting in 1975? The Unwanted FIFA Kiss - how did this fit within Spanish women's long struggle for equal rights and Spain's "Macho Culture"? Dr. del Moral is a professor of gender equality at the Complutense University of Madrid. She directs the Research Group: Gender Relations in the Contemporary World: an interdisciplinary perspective from History, Geography and Law, where she has investigated women's participation in local governments. By the way, during our conversation, Dr. del Moral recommended this book: New Perspectives on European Women's Legal History. In this episode, Dr. del Moral tells us that the Unwanted FIFA kiss was an act of masculine power over a woman. And that's not the first time we've had this in our program. Back in 2021, when New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was accused of sexual harassment and shortly thereafter resigned, Dr. Carry Baker of Smith College explained to us that at its core, sexual harassment is about power! Title: Consent: clarity or confusion? Synopsis: Back in August this year the world saw a thrilling match that saw the Spanish Women's football team beat England in the Women's World Cup Final. But what should have been a time of great celebration has been overshadowed by a sexism scandal that has dominated global headlines. In this episode of Pathway to Peace, the team examine the issue of ‘consent' with regards to when and how others touch you and the boundaries of what is and is not acceptable; and how clarity on these issues can help bring peace between men and women and ultimately for society as a whole. SKC is back and it was a comprehensive 3-0 win vs San Jose. While the score may have flattered SKC somewhat, it was a deserved win regardless. Drew and Cody discuss the quintessential JFR game(including the injury), the tactical personnel choices, Tim Melia doing his thing, and what we will be calling "The Full Fontas". Tactical Corner is focused on building out of pressure, for reasons that should be pretty obvious. This is less of a structural discussion and more of a fluid one highlighting ideas and adaptive philosophies that work best against a quality pressing team like St Louis. The RFEF are making the news for all the wrong reasons, and it is taking the shine away from an exceptional performance by the Spanish Women in Australia/New Zealand last month. It's a story that gets more unbelievable and ridiculous by the hour, and it is an unfortunate yet all too common circumstance when it comes to women's sports. Finally, a quick preview of what should be a really fun atmosphere on Saturday vs. St Louis. Music by The Spin Wires
Spanish football federation chief Luis Rubiales spoiled the afterparty for Spain's Women's World Cup-winning team, first by giving one of the players, Jenni Hermoso, an unwanted kiss, and then by refusing to accept the consequences. As Rubiales clings to his job, the controversy has embarrassed Spain's football establishment, incensed Spanish women and brought on a national reckoning with old-fashioned sexism, says Madrid-based reporter Guy Hedgecoe. Lionel Messi has already won a trophy with Inter Miami after a 10-round, penalty kick thriller over Nashville SC in the Leagues Cup Final. This show had a lot of animosity towards this tournament, but it officially won us over. There are ways to improve this going forward, but with the help of the best player of all time, the Leagues Cup was a massive hit. Sporting KC has nine games left to right the ship and get into the playoffs. 27 points on the board mean a lot can change, but the margin for error is thin. The next two matches are at home against San Jose and St. Louis and the remaining schedule is full of contenders. SKC simply MUST start off the final stretch on the right foot. The Spanish Women's National Team won the World Cup over England, in spite of all the problems between the players and the federation. It's a truly wild story, and incredible those women were able to overcome all of it to win. But the federation took a jab before the players had left the field. The Current and SKCII picked up 1-0 wins. Benny's Boys are in fourth place at the moment. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

I thought I'd take a chance and cover an article called Manosphere: Where men who hate women come together for support by PATRICIA GOSÁLVEZ and here's what parts of her article have to say and I quote: In the jungle of the manosphere, there are different subcultures: MRAs, MTGOW, incels... This caste system is explained endlessly on websites and forums with the meticulous detail of someone describing a Tolkien universe or a deck of Pokémon. There are the “men's rights activists” (MRA). Their causes are mistreated men, especially in terms of parental custody, and they want to change the laws. Then there are the pick-up artists), who have “professionalized” their activity, converting it into a business. Ther are also anti-feminist women, who have “high symbolic value.” Then there are the MGTOWs, or men going their own way, whose misogyny has no monetary or social relevance. They do not want to transform anything, but live on the sidelines: they are done with relationships, and their rhetoric is more cynical. “In Spain, there are very few of them, but they are still more numero Ultimately, the men of all these subcultures are united by the feeling of being “victims of the discrimination that living in a society they consider gynocentric means. They are seeking a group identity, their search is not so much for information as for consolation.”" The manosphere is an internet universe of online forums, websites, blogs, YouTube channels and social media profiles marked by the defense of a masculinity that is loaded with misogyny, where users feel threatened by the system, women and, above all, feminism. “Parallel to the arrival of feminism in institutions, there has been an anti-feminist retreat that considers itself countercultural,” says Elisa García-Mingo, a sociologist from Spain who spent a year between February 2021 and 2022 diving into online spaces. She and fellow researcher Silvia Díaz Fernández shared their findings in a report called Young people in the manosphere: Influence of digital misogyny on their perception of sexual violence. García-Mingo says hat authorities are closely monitoring the radicalization of what they describe as “incel terrorism.” What worries her the most, she says, is “how easily and subtly kids come across this content and how they internalize it, turning it into something emotional that you can no longer refute with arguments or data.” For example: a boy who starts dating girls and Googles “flirt” will soon fall into a spiral of hostile, misogynistic and even self-destructive content.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/mgtow/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

On this week's episode, I was joined by Missouri Valley College's Women's Soccer team Assistant Coach Ana Bejarano. We discussed Ana's player experience as a former Sevilla FC professional player. We also learned more about her college coaching career in the U.S. We talked about Ana's journey as an international student in America's Midwest as well as her origins back in Spain. Ana Bejarano is originally from Aracena, Spain. She was a soccer player for over 15 years. She was able to reach 2nd Division with Sevilla FC in the Spanish Women's Liga. Her playing career brought her to the United States to study abroad and continue to play the beautiful game at Missouri Valley College where she played soccer for an additional 3 years before retiring. After her retirement as a player, she decided to coach at her alma mater. Later on she went as far as to get her Master's degree from Lindenwood University. It was so pleasant to learn about Ana's life story. She's not only a passionate student of the game, but also a UEFA C licensed coach. Ana's dream is to coach professional soccer in La Liga becoming the first ever woman to coach men's soccer back in her home country. I'm grateful Ana became my first female soccer professional guest.
