Zac Wingard of Wingard Wearables joins Bob "The Knife Junkie" DeMarco on Episode 519 of The Knife Junkie Podcast (https://theknifejunkie.com/519).Wingard Wearables creates EDC items out of weapons not thought of for everyday carry, like tomahawks, spears, war clubs, and an implement called the "Quill." And Zac has always been passionate about historical-edged weapons, with a special love for tomahawks. One thing that many current-day tomahawk makers get wrong (and that Wingard focuses on getting right) is weight. Unlike axes and hatchets, tomahawks are meant to be very light and nimble in the hand, and easy to throw. Each Wingard Wearable is made in America by skilled blacksmiths and bladesmiths, and numerous small businesses across three states. Like the name implies, Wingard Wearable tomahawks, pikes, and quills are intended to be worn close to the body and come with kydex sheaths for the sharp and pointy parts. These tomahawks and other implements are not just weapons but also intended for utility use. The Thumper is a wearable bludgeon designed around the Iroquois war club. These are made by Zac entirely in-house. And the new Wingard Wearables Dickpik Magnum is a full-sized spike with all of the utility of the DP with added dagger-like reach and penetration. The newest Wingard Wearables tomahawk is called the Sparrowhawk, and unlike the others in the WW lineup, it is full-tang and ready for rough duty. And Wingard Wearables now offers a unique EDC fixed blade knife called the Love Handle, known for its tusk-like shape and under-the-belly carry profile.2024 also marked the first year Wingard Wearables presented their wares at Blade Show, with a killer booth setup in the Baller Room.Find Wingard Wearables online at https://www.wingardwearables.com, on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/wingard_wearables, and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/wingardwearables.Be sure to support The Knife Junkie and get in on the perks of being a patron, including early access to the podcast and exclusive bonus content. A while back I asked Bruno what would be the benefits of buying into a detailing franchise. The way I see it is you're giving up a piece of the pie for hopefully a larger pie. I don't know many shops that carry that much weight that would make it a smart move. Thankfully Glenn & Tracy Urfer just did such a thing with becoming a part of SparrowHawk mobile detailing. They're going to give us the insight on why they made the decision and what their hopes for growth will be. Since I've now reached episode 150, I've decided to do something I've never done before - discuss a fiction book. (This episode contains spoilers.) A Wizard of Earthsea is a fantasy novel from 1968, a time when the genre was still not very well-developed. Ursula Le Guin deliberately wanted to contravene some trends she saw in the existing genre, including the main characters being fair-skinned, and war as a moral analogy. In this book, the key issues are internal to a character, a fact that becomes increasingly clear as we read further. The main character Ged (a.k.a. Sparrowhawk) goes through several educational regimes - a local witch who wants to take advantage of him; a regional wizard, Ogion, who hopes to provide him with the wisdom not to abuse his precocious powers; and a school, on the island of Roke, which teaches him all the knowledge he wants. Ged learns through bitter experience the value of Ogion's wisdom, though he spurns it as a child hungry for knowledge, power, and other people's approval. I've read this book at least four times, and in three languages - English, Polish, and Spanish. Although its relevance to education is tenuous, I wanted to take advantage of episode 150 to talk about the book I've read the greatest number of times in my life. Enjoy the episode.

I woke up this morning to a thrush's liquid song cascading from the top of an oak tree about 100m away. Phrase after phrase, loud and clear. Not the repetitive song of a Song Thrush, nor the more mellow conversation of a Blackbird, but the melodious outpouring of a Mistle Thrush. Perched, typically, in the open, bold as brass, daring the local Sparrowhawk to interrupt, swept up in the power of his own remarkable voice as it bounced around off the stone walls of our home.During lockdown I bought a parabolic reflector for moments just like this, and over the last few weeks I've been wandering around recording bird songs and layering them together. Common species (at least around here), including Blackbird, Song Thrush, Robin, Greenfinch, Chaffinch, Great and Blue Tits, Nuthatch, and Wren. I've caught snippets of the drumming of a Great Spotted Woodpecker, the first Chiffchaff of the spring, a pair of Wood Pigeons sitting in the sun, our local Rooks flying overhead. I even went out on a frosty morning and caught a barking Roe Deer echoing through a piece of woodland I can see from my window. And now was a perfect time to record that beautiful Mistle Thrush. The result is only short (less than six minutes) and to be honest no one morning sounds exactly like this, but forgive me for any ‘audio licence' because I hope - as it does for me - this brief dawn chorus transports you to somewhere soothing, a place of abundance, and far, far from the headlines.

These were the forces of evil, and only Hen Wen knew the secret of keeping the kingdom of Prydain safe from them. But who would find her first? Boek: A Wizard of Earthsea van schrijfster Ursula K. Le Guin. Niks missen? What would reality be like without fantasy? Would you want to live there? Can you really imagine a place not inhabited by Gandalf and Frodo, Harry and Albus, Sparrowhawk and Vetch; Lucy and Aslan? Thanks to fantasy literature, we can live in an extensive travel bubble. We are exempt from quarantine when we visit Alice in Wonderland, Peter in Neverland, Ged in Earthsea, Harry, Ron and Hermione at Hogwarts, Max where the wild things are, and the Hobbits in the Shire, especially since Hobbiton is only 168 kilometres from Auckland. Glosters specialised in bringing high-speed aircraft to the market, including the Sparrowhawk, Grebe, Gamecock, Gladiator, the E.28/39 which tested Sir Frank Whittle's jet engine and the Meteor which was the first Allied aircraft to enter service powered by a jet. Co-founder of the company, Hugh Burroughes, gives a personal history of the Gloster Aircraft Company (GAC). Starting with its roots in the Aircraft Manufacturing Company during World War I, Burroughes charts the challenges of developing aircraft during the interwar period. He explores the take-over of the GAC by Hawkers in 1934, gives a manufacturers' view of the Schneider Trophy Competitions and discusses the role of the company's interwar designer, H. P. Folland. Burroughes also tells us of his company's work providing the first aircraft for the jet engine, the E.28/39, together with the Meteor which followed. He concludes by exploring the Javelin programme and its part in the decline of the company after the war. All in all, he emphasises the importance of background and timing in the aircraft industry. PLEASE NOTE: The end of the lecture was missing from the original recording and a new ending was added in 2021, using Burroughes' paper published in the 1969 edition of the Aeronautical Journal. RAeS members have free access to Burroughes' paper via https://www.aerosociety.com/elibrary. Hugh Burroughes FRAeS addressed a meeting organised by the Royal Aeronautical Society's Historical Group on 14 December 1964. The lecture is introduced by J. L. Nayler FRAeS FAIAA, the recording was digitised thanks to a grant from the RAeS Foundation and the podcast was edited by Eur Ing Mike Stanberry FRAeS.
