On the week's episode we're digging into the history and folklore of Lincolnshire, and disturbing a monster in the woods that lives beside a half-forgotten well...We start off discussing St Dunstan's Day, including Dunstan's life as an English folk hero, and what the historical record tells us he actually did, all before we advance to Lincolnshire.Once there, we chat about the some county trivia before Eleanor guides us through the counties three 'Parts' - Lindsey, Holland, and Kestevon, from ancient bog bodies to ghost ships, parasitic serpents to a couple of very naughty imps, all before Eleanor slices up some pork shoulder in pretty innovative ways, while also offering up cake and cheese, for this week's County Dish. After that, we do our best to avoid the sinister 'Shag Foal,' recall some deeply unsettling ghost stories, challenge a corpse to a game of cards, turn a blind eye to Lincolnshire's poachers, and so much more - all enriched by some excerpts from Saturday's upcoming Local Legends interview with Dr Rory Waterman and Dr Anna Milon of the Lincolnshire Folk Tales Project. Then it's on to the main event: Eleanor's take on the legend of "Nanny Rutt" - a tale of a sinister female predator who might know it's better to catch a fly with honey, yet whose appetites are for somewhat headier fare... We really hope you enjoy the episode, and will be back on Thursday with a new Three Ravens Bestiary bonus episode about Hellhounds, all before the full interview with Rory and Anna comes out on Saturday! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. A little girl, an innocent heart, and a group of soldiers searching for purpose—this is the story of Ruby Crane. A true story about how hero's can appear.
Lee Darren Boxell, a 15-year-old from Cheam, disappeared on 10 September 1988, last seen outside a Tesco on Sutton High Street at 2:20 pm, hours after parting ways with a friend and mentioning he might attend a football match he never reached. Decades later, investigations linked his disappearance to "The Shed," an unofficial youth club at St Dunstan's Church in Cheam, where paedophile activity was uncovered, including crimes by gravedigger William Lambert. Police theorized Lee may have died intervening to stop abuse. Suspicions also arose around serial offender Brian Lunn Field, though no concrete evidence has confirmed his involvement.Ossuary 6 - Air Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/Contact us at: weeknightmysteries@gmail.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/weeknightmysteriesTikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@weeknightmysteries
Today's podcast is a first for The Voice of Insurance. It's the first time I've done an outside broadcast. And the reason is a special one. David Howden started what was then Howden Pangbourne just over thirty years ago with two others and, famously, a dog, in a tiny office on St Dunstan's Hill in London. Now that business is around six thousand three hundred times bigger in terms of staff numbers and infinitely larger in terms of revenue and has become a major global insurance and reinsurance operator working all over the world. I had been trying to get David back on the show for a while as it had already been 2 years since his last appearance alongside Rod Fox after the acquisition of reinsurance broker TigerRisk. The message came back that he might be tempted to do it as long as we could do something different. So this is indeed completely different. David and I met up at St Dunstan's one morning two weeks ago and went for a walk around the Insurance district of London we both know so well, taking in the sights, but also all of Howden's five London head offices past and present along the way. Inevitably we get a bit of a history lesson and hear lots of insightful stories and some fun anecdotes from along the amazing Howden entrepreneurial journey of the last three decades amid a fast-changing London and international insurance market. But far more importantly we also discuss the core issues affecting the present and the future of that market and how Howden is positioning itself within it. Howden Re, Dual and the MGA boom, the big question over whether Howden might enter US retail broking, ongoing broking consolidation, big capital questions around what structures make the most sense as Howden continues to scale, the firm's latest 30/30 strategic plan and other key decisions facing the Howden Group now and over the decades to come all get comprehensively dealt with. There's nothing like a good walk for opening up a better quality of conversation. David's passion and enthusiasm are fizzling through every second of this fun and all-encompassing discussion. If you want to know how David got this far do listen on, you'll learn an awful lot. But I think a better reason to carry on listening will be to hear where he is heading in the next few years and how he plans to get there. By the time we close our conversation in Dave's Wine Bar at the foot of Howden's current HQ, you'll be much wiser, but probably needing a sit down and a cup of coffee as much as I was. NOTES: If this has piqued your interest, there are some handy highlights of the Howden story here: https://www.howdengroupholdings.com/about-us/our-story The other broking firms that get the most mentions in this Episode are Spear Gulland, acquired by Howden in 1997 and major Spanish intermediary Gil y Carvajal, bought by Aon in 1998. I worked at Gil y Carvajal's London office from 1992-95 and again 1997-98, hence my extra inside knowledge of St Dunstan's. When Jeff Everett's diving buddy signalled that something was wrong, their dive on a WW1 shipwreck quickly became an emergency They were 29m underwater, diving the wreck of the St Dunstan, when Jeff Everett's diving buddy Robin suddenly indicated that he had a problem and needed to ascend. To avoid the ‘bends', which can be fatal, this must be done slowly. Connected by a ‘buddy line' to prevent either diver from getting lost, they started their ascent, but it was dangerously fast. Jeff recalls the terrifying realisation that his buddy's life was in danger. 200 Voices is produced by Adventurous Audio for the RNLI Interview by Adventurous Audio Soundtrack composed and performed by Jon Nicholls The RNLI is a charity celebrating 200 years of saving lives at sea - find out more at RNLI.org/200

As it is written in the Book of Ecclesiastes, Theophiloi: futility. Utter futility. That's what we get from trying to influence the farce that is Lent Madness to get our pick, St. Dunstan, all the way to the end of that sham of a tournament. In the time between deciding on him and recording this episode, our holy boy is already out, despite doing some real Hellboy stuff to the Devil his own self. Find out more in this week's episode, which is neither farce nor sham! Sometimes! Topics of Discussion: St. Joseph's Day, the best possible Die Hard sequel, Jacobus de Voragine's strange attitude towards names, a true momacle, a bunch of people with extremely ninth century royalty names that I'm not going to write down, an attempted callout for my need to do occupy myself while I record these pdocasts, animæ, a light bit of lit crit, bad meter. Hymnal: "Running With The Devil" by Van Halen, "Jump" by BusinessPug (https://youtu.be/X20rr5sA-Ow) Offertory: As Enoch writes, "Whoever of you spends gold or silver for his brother's sake, he will receive ample treasure in the world to come."
